Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

It felt good to be out. To be free of that hole in the ground that she used to call 'home' for the last thirty years as if she was a member of the Flame Court. The sun to her face and the wind to her back. She did not wear any shoes, she wanted to feel the hot sand between her toes. She closed her eyes and breathed in deep, this was like heaven to her. The Sunans certainly were busy little bees building and climbing to new heights once again, being one of the world's most invasive species. She let out a groan and then a sigh, she missed the wide expanse that was the actual desert rather than these sheltered hovels that humans curled up inside. The sun was about to set, the people were all moving indoors to escape the possibility that the wilds might meet them. While inside they missed the heavens ablaze in all of its infinite glory - the dark tangerines and the brilliant scarlet, even the dreary violet haze. The quarter moon was emerging over the horizon as the sun was leaving and soon a chill would overtake these lands.

She was being watched, she did not know it yet but there was someone in the shadows waiting for an opportune moment.

"Takahashi Shiori adopted daughter of Takahashi Jinsei and Kuranaga Nagomi, but perhaps better celebrated as Hahaoyasuna or Mother Suna," a voice announced. The ground was bare, the buildings were still for the most part vacant and there had not been enough time to acquire clutter. Even if there was a wall or a box or a place to hide, it would be unnecessary for once such as she. Practiced in stealth, she was a practitioner of the old ways - ways that were much more difficult to identify. A woman stepped out of the shadows, she was an older woman in relation to the average age of a shinobi.Their lives were often brutal and brief. She had white hair that was cut into a bob, somewhat unruly on this day in particular. Her face was tanned and fine lines framed the corners of her eyes and mouth, a random assessment of her age would place her near forty but physical form is easy enough to alter as most would know.

She had a book in tow, a rather large one. This is a reflection of what was also possessed in her mind. She had written each and every one of these pages herself several times before. An Oracle was more than a keeper of information but also a scribe, a researcher, a learner and a teacher. "I heard you..." Fuu announced, her voice did not need to carry far as it was barely more than a whisper. "I know about the war and I am not here to stop you. I am neutral in the conflicts between cities, nations, men and even Ancients,"</B><i></i> she explained matter of factually. <B>"I simply have a question for you," Fuu announced as she approached the Ancient, undeterred by her apparent wrath.

A strange woman emerged from the shadows as if she was one of them. She wondered what she was first and foremost until she started to speak. It was the frank factual nature of her statements that made her unlike most humans but it did not make her something else. Shiori recalled the advent of the Oracle Order, a fancy name for a bunch of curious cows that felt that through rational reasoning they would have a better understanding of the world. "I am not here to answer your questions Oracle," she replied demonstrating the fact that the information was not entirely one-sided. Shiori started to walk away.

It was expected, this indignant nature. This refusal for compliance. The important thing Suna truly did forget is that this conversation was entirely one-sided. There was a certain civil protocol she preferred, however the acquisition of knowledge for the edification of the masses was not something she had a choice in. "I will walk with you then," Fuu announced as she kept a brisk pace alongside the Ancient. "But you should turn here," she recommended as she pointed down a narrow twisting ally. "Sousuke has made mention to the ANBU ahead that you are... what you are," she whispered as she beckoned the Ancient to follow. "Unless you have eaten your fill and are prepared for a public fray," she reminded Suna.

The ally was long and narrow and at the very end of this dead end ally was a door. It was already open. There were no signs, no markings. Nothing to say what was beyond the door but if the Ancient had the vision to see past the threshold and into the darkness she would see an empty room with a table and a pair of chairs. Beyond that a library filled with books, perhaps the first room was a reading room or an office. That might be hard to determine from so far away. "I must insist Hahaoyasuna," Fuu stated as she reached for the Ancient's wrist to whisk her down the ally.

The Oracle was warning her of danger ahead. She had announced her plans for war before three witnesses... possibly four if this Oracle was somehow present. Masters of subterfuge, it was impossible to know for certain how she learned what she already had. She expected a different response from Sousuke's fellow shinobis. She truly believed that if anything they would find him a madman and lock him away. It was in fact an idle hope of hers while she amassed an army and the power to lead them. She sought revenge that was far overdue. There was a time not long ago when she yearned to only be one of them. To stop feeling so alone. But she was different. She could not find or make someone love her, not with what she was. Not with what she truly was or even the facade she gave humanity. There was, she thought... an aesthetic appeal. That she could act happy. Act dumber than she actually was. That somehow she would be worthy of love. That she could no longer be alone for the first time in centuries.

Not only did she remain alone despite facing death to protect her facade but she was not alone. There was a lesser Lord that still survived but perhaps did not thrive. He was subjugated utterly by Sousuke's blade, nothing more thqan a hollow husk with ideals and wants and even the ambition to follow them through but not the choice to pursue them for what... the benefit of the realm? For the sake of the Steward's ever growing power and authority as he greedily suckled from Mikaboshi's teet.

"So be it," Shiori sighed as she allowed herself to be led down the narrow ally and into the building at the very end. The room was dark but that mattered little to her, there was not much in the room considering her ears were more acute than most eyes. "Why a library? She queried as she started to travel across the room towards the place where they kept the tomes.

The Ancient complied, which was good. It was easier this way. They ran down the narrow allow and into the darkened room. A narrow stream of light was squelched when Fuu slammed the door closed. The room as as black as the dead of night without stars but it did not matter to the Oracle, she knew her way around here all the same.

"Why a library?

The Ancient asked, just in time to discover her own answer. She would stop abruptly when she reached the center of the room. It was true, she could 'see' for miles, she could seen in darkness or in an abundance of light. She could see through doors and even bodies. But what she could not see what was written on the walls and on the floor. She had just stepped on a Devil's Seal, or rather a seal that has been forgotten by the tribes of man a long time ago. A seal capable of trapping an Ancient. Albeit, not for long but for long enough. She would not be able to move. Not be able to fight. She would be able to defend herself in ways many other Ancients could not, but Fuu was prepared. "Because this is the Oracle's new home," Fuu announced as she stepped into the circle untouched by the effects of the seal underfoot. She stopped when she was in front of Shiori and then snapped her fingers. Floodlights were turned on and the large empty space was bathed in light.

"You won't be able to move... You won't be able to leave... but this interview will be brief so please bear with me." Fuu lifted up a chair and carried it across the room and carefully placed the chair on the floor inside the seal near Shiori apparently taking care to not disturb the seal.

"Na-a-ah," Fuu tsked as she approached the Ancient and placed her index finger over the woman's lips. "I would try to refrain from singing," she warned shaking her head. "I can stop you from singing without causing you physical harm," she explained reminding the Ancient of this old seal and of its use in practice. It worked but it was limited, meaning that once harm came to a subject trapped within the seal would shatter and the prisoner would be freed. "All I want is a few answers." She backed away and sat in her chair, from her pocket she took out a single plain white handkerchief and laid it across her lap, her hands folded on top of it. "So tell me Hahaoyasuna, tell me a tale of how you disappeared and how you again came to be?"

She would soon discover her own answer as she was halted somewhere in the center of the room. Her legs refused to obey her. She struggled to move her arms, her neck, her chest. It was hard to breathe, it was as if her entire body was paralyzed. It was a tedious effort to even move her mouth. She grunted with exertion but she was unable to move from the spot she stood. Shiori's face was locked in an ugly expression of rage by the time she was utterly frozen. She could still move her eyes, not well but they jutted back and forth. As the lights came on and flooded the room in blinding light she saw the seals. They were scrawled everywhere, in this makeshift prison. Walls could be broken. Men could be killed. But these seals... these came from her time, and her people. She had not seen them since she was young, or at least younger. This is what they used to hold their ancients, the bind was temporary at best but it still lasted more than long enough to deal with most matters. "What. Did. You. Do. To. Me?" Shiori forced each word out individually, the words difficult to form.

"You won't be able to move... You won't be able to leave... but this interview will be brief so please bear with me."

Fuu moved a chair across the room. Shiori did not take her eyes off the chair. She did not want to sit in the chair. She had been through this before, not long ago in fact where she was nearly ripped apart by a madman who seemed to do what he did because he was bored. He did ask a few questions, but nothing that the average person could not have answered for her. He cut into her with a sadistic glee. The wire dug into her flesh and her crimson sands fell to the ground, turning the world RED. She was not going back into the chair, she would rather die. She could not sing, not well in any case but her words were that of subjugation. She started to make a sweet sound that somehow vibrated past her lips and reverberate off the walls.

"Na-a-ah." Fuu rebuked her as she hushed the Ancient with a single finger. "I would try to refrain from singing... I can stop you from singing without causing you physical harm."</B><i></i> She threatened.

Shiori knew what that meant and it was the one phobia she had developed during her tenure as a human. <B>"Just do not put me in the chair," Shiori requested, but it was obvious that it was a plea more than a request. She did not like being restrained. She still felt pain like any other living thing. She still knew the sensation of disgrace and self-loathing. Even now she could feel her human heart pounding within her breast. She could not shiver with fear but she felt as if she was shaking uncontrollably. Beads of sweat started to form on her brow and her eyes were wide with fear. She had already suffered through this once, regrettably so. The cruelty of man knew no bounds. There was a time when she would not have suffered so, a time where she would not... could not be contained but that time was not now. She had released so much of herself attempting to resurrect her brothers. In cursing the Sunahoshi line. She was essentially mortal, far from the status of Lord she used to be. Barely better than human, but all of this would change. This fear would leave her, because the result would be an impossibility.

"All I want is a few answers... So tell me Hahaoyasuna, tell me a tale of how you disappeared and how you again came to be?"

"Just a simple re-cycle," Shiori answered "...every Ancient returns eventually." Shiori was still struggling to move, her face flushed from exertion.

"You will not be getting out of the circle until I get what I require," Fuu reminded her matter of factly. "You see, Hahaoyasuna... you lack the capacity you once had to break this seal so you will likely remain here indefinitely unless I break the markings on the floor. Something I will not do because of the probability of recourse, however I will not be keeping you indefinitely as I am not a jailer nor will I be handing you over to any authorities. That would go against what we are, assisting humanity rather than the Ancients because if you are about to do as you claim... then a war is coming that will determine the fate of humanity in Wind Country."</B><i></i> She explained as she looked over the red head. To the observer she looked entirely human, it was queer actually. She could see her pale blue eyes and her long fiery hair. Her long, rounded face and long narrow dose. She was vain, she could tell this by her choice of attire. Dresses too ornate for the every day but that was what she wore. Still, she lacked the aesthetics of most humans. Perhaps that was because she was blind. Blind still or up until recently, that she did not know but it was no secret that the adopted Takahashi was blind but the careful placement of lipstick and eye liner. The precise lip-liner and the use of mascara suggested otherwise. Fuu cocked her head to the side and looked over the ancient, her small hands and slender limbs, memorizing her size and her curves. <B>"You look human," she commented sounding almost surprised. She had expected something different, something 'wrong' with her. The eyes, the hair. The shape or the aura but she seemed relatively average, astonishing normalcy.

"Just a simple re-cycle ...every Ancient returns eventually." The Ancient claimed. She was wrong, they both likely knew that the statement was wrong. She was the first Ancient to be seen in centuries less Mikaboshi himself. The others, just disappeared. That was the question of course -- why was she among the living once again unlike her brethren. Why was she not still dead?

"Untrue," Fuu announced as she stood up from the chair, her face painted with the signs of irritation. "I know that you were taken by Shouki. I know that you were treated unpleasantly. I also now know that you have developed a phobia due to my son's cruel actions," she listed off these facts detached from emotion. She lifted the chair above the seals and placed it behind the Ancient. "I can do this his way as well," Fuu announced as she pressed on the Ancient's shoulder and pushed her down onto the chair. Fuu scooted back her torso so that her back hugged the crossrails of the metal chair and her thighs to the bend in her knees were parallel to the seat of the chair. She lifted each of the Ancient's arms and placed them each on the arms of the metal chair. "Wire?" Fuu confirmed as she carefully stepped over the seals on the floor and recovered a spindle of silver wire. Her return the same as her departure only in reverse she wrapped the fine wire around each of her wrists several times over. She did the same with her bare ankles, pairing each limb with a part of the chair. Once complete she dragged her leg over the seal she had made in the ground. It was painted there but her foot broke through the wood causing it to splinter and break. The Ancient was free to now struggle.

"Again, I ask you to tell me a tale... A tale of how you came to be alive once again." Knowledge was the one thing Fuu sought. She did not wish for peace, commodity, love or even wealth. Only an understanding of the infinite. An insurmountable task perhaps for one with a lesser mind. "Sate my curiosity and then this will end."

Such a stubborn... stubborn creature.

"Untrue," Fuu replied.

She went on to tell Shiori a secret that she did not know. That Shouki was her son. Dead now, or at least he was hoped to be. A human surviving the assault he endured as well as being consumed by a toad summon seemed unreasonable. "Heh. Sorry for you loss," Shiori replied sarcastically, her face was far too frozen to demonstrate the sick smile beneath her stiff facade. Shiori watched in unspoken terror as Fuu stood up from her seat and brought it behind her. "No!" Shiori protested, she was still unable to move. "Don't!" Panic laced her word as she struggled against an unmovable force.

"I can do this his way as well," Fuu threatened as she heard the chair's legs touch the floor.

"I'll TALK!" Shiori yelled, her voice sounded indignant but that was actually her begging. "Please!" Fuu wordlessly pushed down on Shiori's shoulders forcing her knees to buckle. She was strong for a bookworm. She posed Shiori like one would a mannequin. Shiori's face twitched into what could only be described as a contorted snarl, the one of the few things she still had power over. Shiori screamed in frustration, unable to break this invisible restraint.

"Wire?"

"Just stop this," she cried. Not just in term of use, but there were actual tears made of earth that escaped the corners of her eyes. More gold than crimson in this case, but still dry tears that fell down the sides of her face. Someone who did not know better would have thought the strange substance was glitter. It was not obviously. Fuu did not relent, she wrapped the fine wire around Shiori's limbs carefully and precisely like any oracle would. She could feel the cold metal from the chair against her forearms and through the thin cloth of her dress. She could feel despite being paralyzed the taut, biting wire as it pressed into her skin. She seemed satisfied with her handiwork when she broke through the seal on the floor. Shiroi immediately rocked over, her attempts to free herself finally heeded by her body but sadly she was now attached to a chair. It crashed onto the floor, Shiori's eyes left to gaze parallel across the massive open space to spy the next room. What was in there? Was there someone she could call to? Was there a way to find help.

All Shiori would be able to see was Fuu's boots when she was asked again the woman's first query. "Again, I ask you to tell me a tale... A tale of how you came to be alive once again... Sate my curiosity and then this will end."</B><i></i>

Shiori let out a sigh. <B>You know your history I would hope. But do you understand it?" Shiori went on to ask. Shiori's arm rested on the floor, she looked at the intricate markings on the floor. This was an old craft. "Godsfall is as good as any place to start. I... was once so much more than I am today. I was old and that was made me strong. I had never died, not completely that is. That was what made me strong, and powerful, and loved. But I am also the Queen of the Earth Court, something that sounds like a wonder. I was... I am the very earth -- I nurture, provide, protect and just am. My scope and breadth were great, all of the terrain in Wind was my domain, exceeded only by the Solar Court and the King. Not my King, but the KING of all Ancients. The world was not a terrible place, not truly. The world was bountiful once... and green. The winds sang and the earth hummed in cadence with every living thing.

Then man came, from where I do not know. Perhaps from over the great salt sea. The lands from the North? It did not matter, not really. They were like an infestation. They hunted wastefully. They bred without consideration for the world around them. Unclean. Barely intelligent. But delicious. I do not remember who was the first to discover that humans were edible. We do not need to eat. The natural energies of Wind Country are unique as far as I know and gave birth to us through the elements we identify. Our element also sustains us. The earth and the wind are... and have always been all that I need to survive. And over time we grow in strength, making the oldest of the Ancients with the greatest resources the most powerful. But human souls made a difference, they were almost like... a way to cheat nature. Injuries that would take months to heal would be gone in moments. The death and rebirth cycle hastened to an instant with a powerful enough soul. I wanted to eradicate humanity, I saw them as nothing more than a terrible blight on this world but my brothers saw it differently. Especially the most violent of us - Homura. The flame does nothing but burn and destroy and it must be fed... Homura's ravenous appetite for destruction was the only thing that prevent him from successfully destroying everything. He fought. Then he would fight again. IF he was not fighting, he was thinking about fighting, honing his skills as a fighter or watching someone else fight. This made him strong-willed, rash and foolish. He died more often than one would think in these early days when mankind was still a novelty. He was not a child when he was reborn for long, with the use of souls he grew exponentially in power in a short time until he was ultimately as untouchable as myself and brother Fuujin.

We did not destroy man, although I regret ceding now. We made them into pets. Slaves being the word that your books used. Perhaps it would be more accurate from your point of view. We saw you as nothing more than chickens or cattle. Capable of meager works yes. Best used as food of course. Some worked their animals while others let them graze in pastures. Homura liked to watch them fight. I suppose you could liken it to a cock fight. Some of the lesser Courts never had slaves and perhaps that was why they never became great. I had slaves..."
She shrugged as she admitted this fact. In fact she had many slaves. She ate them but had little other use for them, in fact she thought herself benevolent in the fact that she let them frolic in the fields. Fenced in fields of course, so nearly cage-free animals. Some were service animals, they scrubbed and cleaned. Overall she had little use for them besides providing a meal in the case of injury or if she saw Homura and Fuujin grow in power to maintain her state of authority.

"Homura bred his slaves to fight and to fight well. It should not surprise me that he built the greatest warrior history has ever known. You know him as 'Primus', that was his free-name but not the name he was given as a slave. He fought in Homura's stadium, each time he left with a celebrated victory. It was tiresome and boring even, the other courts used to watch these battles on occasion and this human became a celebrity you could say. Like a cat that could do tricks, a novelty. Wagers were made and it was obvious that Primus would always leave victorious. I do not know the circumstances of his escape, but I believed him to be irrelevant. When he returned, he had gathered the strays into what he called an army. It was pathetic really. He encouraged our livestock to rise up against us, taking them from their pastures and stables in the dead of night. The numbers were more than we anticipated, they outnumbered us more than 10 to 1. It did not matter of course, they were weak and human. Any one of the great lords could have destroyed his entire army with a motion.

I could have killed this rebel pets myself then, perhaps. I have... a limit. As does every one of my brothers. We are beholden to our nature unlike humanity. Where Homura fights with unending zeal, I cannot say he particularly desires it only that he does it because that is what he is. It is a compulsion we have no control over. I... cannot intervene in matters,"
She sighed. She needed to find the words for this, specific words. "I am a neutral arbitrator because the desert can take no sides. A limit until that day even I failed to fully understand or appreciate. If two Ancients were in battle, I could not intervene unless I was directly offended. I needed to allow their strength and skillset determine their survival. It was not a terrible limit, I could still defend myself and my court if offended by someone else had to start the war. Man knew this limit and perhaps understood it better than I did in my indifference and stupidity. They attacked the other Courts, leaving the Earth Court out of the fray. This made us feeble, we could not even discipline our own slaves. It was as if an internal force was preventing us...

Even without my intervention, humanity was on the cusp of a loss. The other courts were simply slaughtering these rebellious humans. That was until Primus challenged Homura and Fuujin to battle. It was a grossly one-sided battle, or it should have been. Either Ancient on his own was more than sufficient to destroy a single, weak human. I watched the decisive battle from afar, over the clash of blades and armor. Over the battle cries and death calls. The entire army became silent for the battle between Primus and the great Ancients. Fuujin's hubris and Homura's bloodlust proved to be their downfall. A single cut from Primus' blade, I believe it was called Shoki or 'demon queller' in present tongue."

It was hard work always being right. Fear was a more powerful motivator than actual pain and something everyone had in one form or another. You just needed to know the right buttons to press. She begged and Fuu did not relent. Fuu was not a particularly cruel woman, but she was a brilliant woman who had earned the begrudged respect of her cabal peers. She was not placed in the role she had by her name or associations but rather her merit. Her son's involvement more an unfortunate coincidence, she had no love for the boy or his loathsome father. The union between them was never one of love, nor was her compliance a consideration.

Suna fell to the floor when she broke the seal. An assumed outcome, one that she used to demonstrate that she was in control. One that caused some minor discomfort without long-term ailment. At least this time she was willing to talk. Fuu listened intently as she opened her massive tome and started to scrawl inside these ivory pages verbatim what she said. Most of what was said was not news to her of course, she was just blathering on. She reached for the back of the chair and pulled the Ancient upright. "I encourage you to get to the point," Fuu reminded her as she pulled a small sharp knife from her belt. It was no more than three inches in length and entirely silver. The markings were nothing in particular, it was not a god-slaying weapon or a Journeyman trinket but rather a simple albeit expensive double-sided blade. "I am more than aware of your healing factor, but not everything is considered an injury." She rested her knife on the bound Ancient's shoulder, the blade millimeters from Shiori's carotid. "Cuts and holes heal, especially when one such as you can find souls," Fuu whispered into the Ancient's ear. "Vanity," Fuu whispered as the blade cut through a lock of Suna's hair. She pinched the falling strand between her fingers and held it in front of Suna's face. "This does not grow back at the same rate as say... a severed limb?"

"Again I ask... How did you come to live again?"

She was pulled upright, but he tale appeared to be less than satisfactory. A blade to or rather near the neck, was she looking to end it all now. A jump start on the cycle, she would reform again and that time she would not be known as she is now. Time was of limited consequence for her. She feared the pain and indignity of death more than the actual process as she had already experienced death before. It did not seem that Fuu wanted her dead, she did not threaten her flesh but rather her conceit. She repeated the question.

"There is a reason I did not die on that day. There is a reason that I did not die with my Court. WHY I died is relevant to why I am reborn," Shiori countered. "I did not die in Godsfall. Fuujin and Homura were mortally wounded but Primus fell to their wrath. This rallied humanity and enervated the Ancient Courts, many taken by surprise this resurgence resulted in a blade through the heart of many Ancients. Some fled when they saw the loss and the subsequent surprise slaughter of their allies and the few that remained were simply overwhelmed. This was the turning point of the war, the consolidated tribes of man started to hunt the Ancients that remained. The Earth Court being the last of their victims. I fought back but it was an ambush. My children were already slaughtered when they came upon my chambers, they tried to lock me away in a weapon and I escaped only barely. I never knew the fate of my children or the lesser courts as I was exiled into the wilds that I wandered for what I would think was months but it could have been years. The revelation of time for an Ancient is different than that of man. I wandered and I waited for my kin to be reborn but I never saw evidence. I watched over the site where brother Homura and Fuujin died, protecting the site from the curious and vandals. With time the tribes started to scatter in the absence of leadership, the only thing they shared was their sport-like hunt of Ancients. They seemed adept at finding them and slaughtering them or perhaps trapping them. Ancients were on the brink of extinction.

It did not appear that Homura and Fuujin would rise anytime soon. I was alone and my luck would eventually run out. I was weak from injuries already sustained and a limited soul resource I healed at a snail's pace. I was still stronger than they, by far. That was why I had survived as long as I had, but they were wearing me down and eventually they would be victorious. It was because of this I came up with a plan. I challenged the son of Primus, his progeny who would one day share his potential and I feared one day would have a hand in my downfall. I challenged him to a battle and I won but I did not take his life, rather I infused him with my essence. I have him a curse that gave him power over this domain. Seen by early man as a 'gift' history recalls me as benevolent, forgetting their many offenses against me and mine against them. I had my reasons for this... I needed time. I needed to change the course of this family's legacy and I had done exactly that.

Homura and Fuujin would have time to recuperate. I would seek souls and try to survive until then, barely more than a scavenger in the wilds. Nearly where I once was in terms of strength and glory I had evaded the hunting parties of man, they settled under singular leadership and started to forget what I was. Homura and Fuujin still never returned, nor my children... their children... the children of the other courts. If they had, I never saw them. I would not have missed Homura and Fuujin's return. I was there the whole time. Eventually I concluded that I would commit a taboo. I would forcibly revive my fallen brothers. I expelled my own essence over their remains. I continued, despite the pain and the weakness. I continued despite the fact I was falling apart. I continued until I was reduced to dust and had nothing more to share. Even with nothing, I was still aware and carried by the winds. Buried under the ever shifting dunes deep into the recesses of the earth where the darkness and my song were my only friends. I remained in this perpetual agony for centuries.

Humanity changed during this time. I could hear them. I could sometimes see them even from as far away as I was, I never lost my senses. I could hear their prayers sometimes although I never answered - I could not even if it was ever a fleeting desire. I watched as mankind lived, died, laughed and cried. I was alone but they never were. Then one day a human, or rather a group of humans ventured too close. I did not warn them, I had no voice they could hear. One, a man... stepped in my gravesoil. Like tendrils my essence wrapped around him. It was an instinct. It was ravenous hunger from centuries without a meal. I sucked Jinsei dry before I even realized there was a meal in front of me. I did the same to his cellmates, one would be soon known as his wife. I was hungry even still. I was so weak. Not even a full human child in strength or endurance. I was blind even after the consumption of souls. I did not even remember doing it,"
Shiori admitted shaking her head. She actually did not want to hurt them, she did not want to hurt anyone but she wanted the pain to stop. She wanted to live even at the sacrifice of another. It was selfish. It was cowardly. She did not really have a choice but even if one had been presented she would have taken the path of life.

"I would not survive long as a child Ancient recently reborn. I knew that. I removed some of the stolen essence and infused it back within the ones I would eventually call 'mother' and 'father.' Risen corpes subject to my command and will," Shiori admitted. It was a skill similar to what Dark Sages possessed. "I became their child and lived the life of a human so that I could become strong again. But... I felt guilt, quickly after I chose this life. I made myself forget what I was as the guilt pervaded my mind. I do not understand why I felt guilt for the sin of eating. The sin of living. Sins you would not repent for it it was your life that was saved by meat. I forgot what I was and lived a contented life. Fell in love and knew the pain of rejection. I even died again." Suna laughed at the irony. If she did not feel such remorse she would have already returned to her previous glory and power and she would not have died. The Cabal would never have successfully invaded and even if they did it would have been a momentary inconvenience. "When I died, I remembered. My parents were dead. They had been for years. My self-loathing was what made them abusive and cruel, perhaps a subconscious attempt to repent. When I remembered who I was, I wanted to share this with the one person I loved. He rejected what I was. Refused to acknowledge my true identity. Refuse to accept my emotions or mirror them. It hurt, but I feel that perhaps he was and will never be capable of such an emotion but it burned all the same. Then I realized I was not alone. Rejected by Sousuke yes, a lesser Lord survived still. He was never a 'good' Lord or even 'kind' in fact he was always the fool. He refused to interfere in the battle by his choice, a traitor for not helping us extinguish the rebellious nature of man. Perhaps the only ally mankind ever knew among Ancients in my opinion, but betrayed. I do not know when or how he was sealed in his own weapon with such indignity but I do know that it is in the possession of Sousuke and that he subjugated my brother utterly. An unforgivable offense even against a piteous Lord such as he. I confronted Sousuke, he accepted what I was and saw me an enemy but by then I was. He simply sought power and did not care of the consequence or the ethic of theft. So I declared war.' She concluded, answering likely the Oracle's next question which was why. Why did she live a life as a human - sentiment and love. Why did she bother with this charade - she was too weak to survive on her own. How did she maintain such a lie - because she did not remember it was a lie. What changed - Sousuke.

Fuu
Oracle - Cabal Member

"Aye," Fuu replied. It was more than she had asked but there was never a reason to discard information. The coming war was the most dangerous kind - a personal vendetta.

"That will be all," Fuu announced "...for now." Fuu's knife retreated into her pocket and she took a step back. "I suppose now would be the time to break out." Fuu left the room and once out of sight she called "It would be best if you left the way you came. The library is covered in those same seals and I would hate to see if anyone else got ahold of you besides me. We will meet again and surely under similar circumstances but I have what I need for today."

She left, finally. Shiori struggled against her restraints, again knocking herself over. The wires groaned and eventually snapped with a biting recoil. It did not matter of course, the deep cuts in her forearms or the sand-stained floor. Her fingers, somewhat numb fought to untie the tight knot that held her other arm and then quickly her legs. Her limbs ached, grateful for their newly rediscovered freedom. She contemplated chasing after the Oracle but thought better of it. There might have been some truth to what she claimed.

That was a dead bitch.

Just not now, not today. Disgraced but intact Shiori departed.

[spoilername="Steadfast Core Ability Table"]The Steadfast ninja is one who doesn't go down easily. They are tough and durable, able to resist heavy amounts of damage and defend their teammates. They are also incredibly determined, and it is impossible to ever truly break them down.

Maximum Defense<i></i> - Modification (2 points)
Restriction- Requires Defensive Technique
A Steadfast can learn this variation on the Defensive Technique once they have practiced it to its full potential. Instead of dodging around like a flea, they can focus on guarding all of their weak points in order to reduce they amount of damage from attacks. As an alternative, they can almost completely forgo attacking, throwing all of their energy into evading enemy attacks instead.
Effect: When using Defensive Stance, you can trade 1 point of Accuracy in order to reduce oncoming damage by 5% instead of gaining a dodge bonus (to a maximum of -2 accuracy and -10% damage taken), or you can trade 1 point of Accuracy for 1 point of Dodge up to a maximum of 6 (as opposed to the previous 4).

Great Fortitude<i></i> - Passive (3 points)
Restriction- C Rank and up
A Steadfast that learns this has mastered their ability to take hits without injury, making their bodies almost impossibly strong. It takes quite a bit to make them actually feel an attack, and even then you might not illicit a reaction.
Effect: Ignores damage each round. How much is reduced is based on your character level, this skill reduces 75 Damage per level each round.

Stand Fast<i></i> - Independent Special Move (2 points)
Restriction- C Rank and up
A Steadfast who learns this particular ability is able to tap into a great reservoir of inner resolve, temporarily becoming able to suffer huge amounts of damage without incurring any serious harm to themselves by taking an absolutely defensive stance.
Effect: For one round, the user reduces all damage against themselves by 75% but cannot attack in that round. Usable only once per combat. Does not take any more Damage reduction buffs. If the user is not hit during the round this is used, it will not count as being used.

Human Shield<i></i> - Independent Special Move (2 points)
Restriction- Requires Body Switch
A Steadfast is excellent at taking blows, but not everybody else is. Using their natural ability to soak damage an extension of the Kawarimi (Body Switch) jutsu, a Stalwart can leap in front of an ally and take attacks for them, perhaps preventing them from being harmed.
Effect: The Steadfast can switch places with an ally that is attacked at a cost of 0.5 AP (they cannot switch places with an ally when they are being attacked). Allies that are aware of this ability and can Body Switch with real clones can designate the Steadfast as a target; if the Steadfast is unwilling to switch, then the jutsu automatically fails. The triggering attack is resolved against the Steadfast instead, who can attempt to dodge it normally.

Awesome Power<i></i> - Modification (2 points)
Restriction- C Rank and up, Requires Hidden Power
A Steadfast ninja with the ability to bring forth a deep seeded power within them will often test that power, pushing to themselves to the limits at all times until they have mastered those reserved abilities. When they are pushed again, you can expect the backlash to be severe.
Effect: The user gains +1 to their Secondary stats rather than +.5. This caps at +4 to their secondaries.

Willfull<i></i> - Boost (1 point)
Restriction- Can only be purchased a maximum of two times
A Steadfast ninja has willpower beyond that of anybody else, able to beat away enemy illusions and maintain focus on their goal. A Steadfast nin is one who possesses not only fortitude of the body, but of the mind as well.
Effect: +1 Genjutsu Save

Second Wind<i></i> - Independent Special Move (3 points)
Restriction- C Rank and up
Just when enemies think they've got the Steadfast one down, when they've hit their limits and can’t fight any harder, that’s when it’s time to use the Second Wind. Due to training, those with Steadfast have amplified their natural ability to recover to extraordinary levels.
Effect: The user regains 20% max HP, and cancels all Bleeding. This is usable only once per combat.

Free Will<i></i> - Passive (2 points)
Those with Steadfast are not easy to detain, able to break out of jutsu and traps that would seem completely foolproof by sheer willpower. They simply cannot be held down when they've got a goal to accomplish, and you’d be a fool to try.
Effect: The Steadfast gains +2 Dodge/Save against binds, and has an additional +5% chance of escaping.

Indomitable Spirit<i></i> - Passive (3 points)
Through raw training and persistence, the Steadfast ninja has a will stronger than their body. No matter what torturous pain they may be going through, they can overcome and fight on.
Effect: The user ignores one point of debuff from any and all sources (so a Blinding Flash that causes a -3 to Accuracy and Dodge only causes a -2 to the user). In addition, they are not influenced by any fear effects.

Poison Immunity<i></i> - Modification (2 points)
Restriction- Requires Poison Resistance
A Steadfast ninja who learns to resist poison takes things a step beyond what normal people would do, putting their excellent health to the test and continuing to poison themselves where others would stop. Nearly killing themselves, the Steadfast gain incredible resistance to poisons of all sorts.
Effect: Increases bonuses from Poison Resistance to Immune to Weak Poison, +3 against Strong Poison, +2 against Heavy Poison’

Undying Warrior<i></i> - Independent Special Move (2 points)
Restriction- B Rank and up
This powerful skill is the penultimate technique that any Steadfast ninja could learn, allowing them to increase their resolve to a level that defies imagination. By focusing all of their attention, energy, and willpower on one target, the Steadfast ninja is able to stave off even death until that enemy is laid to rest. This is best used when they are in desperate straights, as a final act of will.
Effect: When the Steadfast ninja starts their turn unconscious due to having 0 HP or lower (but no lower than -50% of their Max HP), they may choose to revive and act again. They receive +2 to Accuracy on all attacks against the opponent that felled them. If their HP drops below -50% of their Max HP, they fall unconscious again and cannot use this technique unless their HP rises above this value. They lose 1500 CP at the end of every round they act while having less than 0 HP (if they run out of CP, this is taken from their HP), and this technique can be used for a total of three rounds in a battle.

Resilience - Boost (1 point)
Restriction- Can be purchased up to three times
Steadfast ninja push the limits of the human body, ignoring pain and pushing on to absorbing more damage than their heartiest allies. This helps them to defend their allies as long as possible by extending the time they can remain fighting.
Effect: +2 HP modifier.

Reciprocate<i></i> - Jutsu (1 point, 1 point to rank up)
Restriction- A-Rank and up
This deadly jutsu unique to the Steadfast taps into the muscle memory of their body, taking the pain that they've suffered and turning it against an opponent. With a solid hit from their palm, the Steadfast transfers all of their pain and injury into the enemy’s body, sometimes with interest.
Rank 1: Deals all of the damage dealt to the Steadfast in the past two rounds (including damage that was negated), at +1 Accuracy
Rank 2: Deals all of the damage dealt to the Steadfast in the past three rounds (including damage that was negated), at +2 Accuracy
Cost: 3 AP, Costs CP equal to 50% of the damage Dealt
Note:</I><I> Usable at any time; does not require to be declared 2-3 rounds beforehand. Max damage is at 6800. This cannot be buffed. Uses melee accuracy.
