(This is a one-off post for OCR limbo training. This isn't any sort of training, but more of a glance into Naomi's day-to-day as a young woman without sight.)
Naomi stretched leisurely as the chirp of a bird woke her from her light slumber. She'd never been much of a heavy sleeper, so it was often the smallest sounds piercing the silence that woke her. This bird just so happened to be the first of the day, and so the sun was just peeking from the distant horizon. Not that the sunrise mattered much to her, she hadn't been able to witness one since she was much smaller. One would think that the lack of ability to keep track of time would cause one some stress, but Naomi had long since adapted to sleeping when she was tired and being active when she wasn't and altering her days to fit that of the world's current activity.
The short-haired lass moved to the edge of her bed in an obviously familiar manner, shifting the covers from her frame and letting them heap together onto the bed. She got to her feet and started out of her room, sensing the shadows along the way.
It was a curious thing, that. Though she lacked sight, her confident movements showed that she was still entirely aware of her surroundings. Some would automatically assume that she perhaps had the sonar the Hashigaki claimed, but that assumption would be wrong. No, she possessed a rather Nara-inspired vision. To the knowledgeable and trained eye, shadows were as thick and tangible as water. Like an object would in light, things broke the shadows, forced them to part and mold around said objects. While Naomi couldn't see those objects that forced the shadows to break, she could see the shadows break and move around something.
It wasn't the most effective method of seeing, and it had its weaknesses (any open expanse of area bathed in light is near impossible for her to navigate), but the rudimentary method of walking through the shadows gave Naomi enough to move about the world with the ease of a sighted person. Almost, at least. Some things she simply couldn't do, such as cook. It was obvious from her fridge, which remained dark when she opened it, that she mostly ate cold foods or simply ate out. Vegetables and fruits were in abundance, and any observative person would notice the lack of raw meats and other such ingredients.
It was a difficult way to survive, but to the young lady that sat and poured a bowl of cereal in complete darkness, it was the only way to live.
