The dreams had happened again, hands stained with blood clawing at him, dead eyes of people he had forgotten seeming to scream of betrayal and hate, and the endless question in that familiar voice echoing down the dark endless corridors the very words a cold knife carving out his chest.
"Why do you run?"
Kaz awoke in a cold sweat in his new unfamiliar home, and he ran. He passed through the endless lights of the slums where day and night was meaningless, usually he would have stopped and given some yen to the many poor souls trying to sleep on the side of the road but instead he ran. He ran through the place that the village trained their army of child soldiers drilling an ideology into them, he would have stopped to learn how to apply himself to the career that he had never chosen but today he just ran. He ran through the streets and alleys barefoot dragging himself through exhaustion, all to avoid the answer to a question from a forgotten memory. His lungs burned and his limbs screamed, but then just before exhaustion could claim him he stopped, staring at the monolithic structure in front of him, the monument to a battle that had taken the very land from its village, and had shown its determination to survive. The awe knocked him to his knees, or the running did. A single bead of sweat trickled down his face, seemingly in slow motion a dropped into a tiny puddle in front of him, the ripple distorted his reflection for a moment, changing it completely for a moment he looked younger but his eyes seemed, wrong. And his mouth moved, Kaz shivered as though a shadow had passed over his grave, he picked himself up, slowly and gingerly, and slowly moved towards the structure.
"Now that I'm here I may as well look around, I guess..."
