Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

The stadium was vibrating, the spectators were stomping on the floor chanting your names before you even broke through the door. The stadium was packed, even the aisles were now occupied with curious onlookers. It was standing room only. You had seen the victor of the first match, perhaps even the full fight if you hurried on in. You would have certain seen the last two unless you were the type to show at the very last moment but whatever it was that you might have been doing outside of the Arena it was not nearly as important as watching the other contestants. The first match was always the wildcard match -- you might think you know what your opponent is going to do. What sort of fighter they really are but it is hard to judge a book by its cover. Did you judge prematurely? Your match was likely to have a combatant just as skilled as those you saw, but their fighting style is anyone's guess. They did a better job than one would have expected cleaning up the arena, you saw what they did out there but there was not a drop of blood on the ground. The stadium itself seemed to be in perfect condition. The spectators utterly safe from harm. Wow. You would never have known that there was a fight here an hour earlier. The crowd was riled, they were still cheering and recounting the previous match when you emerged through the pair of steel doors and now their roar was deafening. Sex and violence were mankind's most primal and basic instincts and it would appear that the people were in a frenzy. It should not surprise anyone that a competition that pitted the world's strongest against each other would attract so much attention or that they would get so excited.

The people of Kurosawa seemed accommodating enough, you were given comfortable living arrangements for the weeks you would spend in Tea Country and meals were delivered to your door promptly at 0600, 1200 and 1800 each day if you ate them or not. They were pretty good even if the fare was primarily fish and vegetables. The people of Kurosawa even seemed excited, even if it was a bit over the top at times. Both of you would have been approached for an autograph several times, hopefully you obliged at least a few. They would scream and carry on that you touched their pen and that they would treasure it forever. Awk-ward... Your face was even printed on a few T-shirts being worn by middle aged men, these people seemed to be very much into fighting.

Perhaps this was what it was like to be a celebrity. The flash of cameras wherever you went and the sudden need for complete strangers to share your personal space. Rest might not have been particularly 'restful' for some, last night a girl knocked on Kaji's door wearing a trench-coat, that being all. She would open her coat and walk on in if she could. If Kaji did not stop her. Apparently she was here to give the guest(s) of this room a 'good time' and her fare was already paid 'gratuitously.' A really cute guy would knock on Azusa's door, claiming he was sent to 'show her a good time before the big day.' If either Kaji or Azusa let them in, they would have a good time ...for the rest of the night. They might have an extra spring in your step, but they would be a bit tired. Apparently he had a bit of Akimichi blood in his background, he was able to unnaturally enlarge a certain body part. *wink* *wink* And the girl, well she had a few extra limbs and they were all kept busy if she was allowed to do her job as intended. *Cough*

Regardless of how you spent the evening before -- be it sleeping or the night of your life, the big day has finally come. It was the day of the tournament and the air was abuzz! Someone was waiting for you when you opened the hotel room door. "Finally," a cloaked man would announce as he stepped into the hall. The moment previous he was not visible, except his shadow. "I am Ryuunosuke, your escort to the Hisashī Zenshōsen Arena. I have been sent here to ensure your safety. Yes-yes, I am aware of your incredible martial prowess" he did not sound particularly convinced but he did not sound sarcastic either. "However you are unaware of our country's customs and our concerns surrounding their potentially detrimental behavior. You see, we have people from all over the world in Tea Country. This tournament is not an exception as we have always been a sort of 'melting pot' I suppose." He would beckon you to follow him as he led you down the hall and out of the hotel. "But therein is a problem, many of the people here at this tournament do not have your... or anyone besides their own for that matter, best interests at heart. It is likely that someone will attempt to accost you enroute to the tournament if they have not already. Nothing overt, just something to ensure victory for the person that they wish to win." He explained it perhaps simpler than he should but shinobis from their respective countries were never particularly bright, just capable.

He would lead you through the city. On multiple occasions someone would start to approach you, with paper, drink or trinket in hand but before they could reach you unless you accepted their 'boon' Ryuunosuke would step in their path with a near mechanical proficiency. "No." That was all he would say, nothing more... nothing less. The casually clothed civilian would simply meander away. "Nothing is truly free, not here. Something you best learn early I suppose, just not on my watch. That was Hirabayashi Shouhei, a merchant from this city. He is a betting-man, always has been. 50-50 chance he was going to seal something on you or unlock something. I assure you, the odds are ever against your favor." He explained the situation again rather simply. He had no reason to go into detail, if they were smart enough they already understood what was going on. About why they were being 'protected.' He was not going to explain it of course, but again as he said -- nothing is ever free.

You would be led around the Arena. From the outside the Arena was rather imposing, there were four statues with their backs towards you that appeared to be looking down into the arena. The walls were rather high, three hundred feet, perhaps more by your best estimation. The grey stone had something etched into it, into every single brick. If Ryuunosuke was asked about the bricks, he would explain. "Protection seals, cannot have the building crash down around you." Logical. He would lead you to an unmarked door that was flanked by a pair of guards, each wore the regalia of a samurai. They would look over at Ryuunosuke and grant entry with a nod. Apparently this private hall was well-guarded, another pair of samurais would eye you cautiously as you entered the hall. The hall would be otherwise undecorated and plain.

You would be led to a private locker room, your name on the door. You might recognize a few of the other names as well, fellow compatriots from your village or some famed shinobi from abroad. You would be summoned a few hours later, in the mean time you would be left to your devices -- eat, sleep, watch TV, call your wife on a headset, pray... [Yes, pick whatever amenities you want in the room] The same man would knock on your door, "It is time for your match," he was as serious as always when he said it. He would lead the way. He would lead you to a steel door painted white, it would be sealed shut. "The door will open at 3:00, be malleable." He would point at a clock, you had a few more minutes left. The sound of the ticking clock was deafening and the time would seem to pass slowly despite it being only a few minutes but the doors would eventually unlock and with a trumpet fanfare as well as confetti you would be queued to make an entrance. Half the show was about the spectacle. The other half... let's call it 'fighting.'

Notes:
  • Sand shinobis would recognize the language being used is a form of Runic Terran, however they would not be able to make out what was said.
  • Kaji would notice something unusual about the clothes Ryuunosuke was wearing. They are intended for climates that are cooler than where they presently are.

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

From a high-rise hotel balcony, Kaji Okada could see it all.
Kurosawa City was as much of a prototype for modern luxury in a seat of power as any place he visited before. The horizon of Kurosawa glistened with gold trimming as the sun gave way to nightfall. Kaji’s emeraldine eyes swept the city, curiously following an invisible line from end to end. Skyscrapers were like layers of gluttonous fat hiding the veins that pumped iron blood through the city: the poor day laborers, beggars, vagrants, cutpurses, and con artists. It was just superficial; makeup covering a society bruised by capitalism.

His hard life— no, his tale of a true shinobi gave Kaji the gift to see through veils and find truths. From his perspective, he saw a city lacking the morality and honor saved by having an institution like his Hidden Cloud. Were there no protectors here to lift the downtrodden? A father to guide the child? Was there no righteous folk to offer the whore a new path?

So deep in contemplation, Kaji did not hear the rabble on his door for quite some time, long enough that the visitor must have been persistent, even desperate to see her mission through. It wasn’t until some honeyed words called through the door that Kaji recognized the call and approached the entrance. He wasn’t decent: Kaji strode through the room shirtless, dealing with Kurosawa’s seasonal heat. Yuii had just gone downstairs to collect the academy students and take them to dinner. It was just Kaji and Umeko, his newborn daughter in a cradle by the bed. She slept soundly, as babies often did in their first few months.

So no, in this moment Kaji was not expecting a visitor, nor did that voice sound familiar. On his way to the doorway, he took the curved dagger from his flak jacket on the bed and hid it behind his back as he slowly opened the door. A visitor in her trenchcoat met Kaji and surveyed him, causing her eyebrows to perk. She was thinking Kaji must have heard a rumor that she was coming.
Kaji Okada was a handsome man, at least according to his wife, who appreciated his angular features, wiry frame of lean, corded muscle, and soul-searching eyes. Kaji swept the strands of obsidian hair from his face in a typical nervous tic, ogling his visitor as she kind of welcomed herself in. Kaji took steps backward, almost wishing this was some dangerous encounter instead of the truth— at least then he could remove her by force. “Sorry, I didn’t order any room service,” Kaji said dryly as the shapely courtesan sauntered by. He kept the door open, stood by it, and slyly planted the dagger somewhere unseen in the room without alerting her.

Whoever sent the woman did their research— she was curvy with a clear complexion, and flowing hair that was blue like his wife’s tresses, but not natural. Kaji suspected a wig, but that did not matter. Her timing was also precise, showing up moments after Yuii left. She was a pretty girl; high cheekbones, hazel eyes, an athletic physique that promised to make you work for her in bed, and even a rare bloodline… Kaji had to put his hands up and wave at her to cease once she dropped her coat to the floor! She bore all, including six sleek arms with dextrous hands ready to stroke, tease, and please. Kaji was demanding, saying “stop, please stop. ‘Can’t you see I’m not even alone— look behind you, that’s my child laying there, asleep.”
The courtesan huffed, blowing a silky wig strand out of her long lashes, and replied, “I’m not one to judge... married men are usually the most opportunistic— and they pay the best.” She was unabashed, even with her jiggly bits waving around. At least she had the sense to dip low and put her trench coat back on.
“Get out!” Persisted Kaji.
“Whatever… Well, I’ll be at the bar all night if you change your mind. ‘That’s how long they paid me for and I’m not refunding s***. Last time this happened, I got my ass kicked for going home early.” It appeared that history’s oldest profession worked the same, no matter if it was Kurosawa or Crater City.
Kaji remained steadfast in his decision with his arms folded and a scowl on his face, but his gears turned as the company made her way towards the door. Apparently, Kaji had an idea. “Wait, all night?” His eyebrows raised and he looked at the bed. “Well, if you’re here to serve me I could use a hand or two... or six.” His scowl softened into a more welcoming smile, and he hoped she had more reasonable attire webbed to a crawl space nearby. Kaji asked, “I’m betting you know your way around a needle and thread… think you can sew something for me?” The question caused her face to light up with genuine elation; a kind she’d never shown a client before.

-------------------------

In an ideal world, converting a potential mistress into a seamstress was the work of a hero. However, in his current reality, Kaji got off lucky, barely avoiding calamity once his wife came home to discover a nearly-naked woman, comfortable in a bathrobe, sewing thin plates of armor onto Kaji’s new, climate-friendly battle attire. It took a bit of explaining just to prevent his ladylove from assaulting both Kaji and the seamstress with enough genjutsu to make their brains hemorrhage. Yes, that would have been quite a tale— double homicide on the night before the big matches began.

Kaji let out an exhale as he imagined that outcome. It was the next morning and he was setting out for the day, notably alone, though in his new attire. Yes, his studded leather armor was a bit too much for the heat of southern Tea Country, so he had a sleek black outfit tailored with plates. Flatly painted steel was just enough to guard his flanks, and each came with symbols engraved, reflecting his ties and origin. And the price he paid for dressing appropriately was just a bit of passive aggression from his loving wife. Maybe she did accept his excuse, but not without heading out a bit earlier in the day than Kaji hoped. She even stole away with Umeko before Kaji got a chance to kiss either of them goodbye. You could say it was his first trip to the dog house. And so, Mister Okada emerged from his room expecting to take a lonely walk to his fated match, but that was when another stranger was revealed outside his domicile.

“I didn’t order any room service” Kaji chided the cloaked stranger, not even glancing directly at him as he did. Surely he didn’t mistake the man who introduced himself as Ryuunosuke for another walking distraction. Actually, the cloaked figure was easily mistaken for another foreign shinobi. Nonetheless, this stranger was an escort of the more literal type and insisted on accompanying Kaji’s journey to the stadium. He was quick to elaborate with a reasonable excuse for the escort, though Kaji didn’t care either way. Quietly nodding and somewhat distracted, Kaji followed along as Ryuunosuke led the way, and delivered a sermon aligned with Kaji’s perceptions of Kurosawa from the night before. “If you ask mankind, it’s money that makes the world turn,” replied Kaji, summing up their sentiments exactly.

The walk to the Hisashī Zenshōsen was as much as Kaji expected. Perhaps shinobi with more assailable morales would have been swayed by the attention Ryuunosuke swatted away from Kaji, but the escort was appreciated all the same. The mere thought of being tricked, swindled, poisoned, or bought off just before his match sickened Kaji Okada. Compared to many others, there were incredible stakes in this fight for Kaji. The binds of past loyalties were tight on his flesh and pulling him every which way, all using a petty tournament as a deciding factor. The Hidden Stone would be watching him today, of that much Kaji was sure, even if they sent their own horse for the race. Kaji also knew his partner in life would be a witness in the stands, praying to her deity Raiden that he succeed and come back whole. Impressionable students and peers were also looking for him to succeed, even foolishly wagering their hard-earned coin in betting pools. Kaji hated gambling unless its something as minor as a few gold yen pieces over a game of darts or dominos.

A bit of one-sided conversation from Ryuunosuke snapped Kaji out of his contemplative state from time to time, but nothing grabbed Kaji’s attention like the gargantuan statues mounted around the area. These four figures were like an approximation of everything wrong with this land. They were so grand, yet nothing about these marvelous statues could feed a hungry child or provide a pauper some shelter for a night. They were too much like the titans chiseled into the adjacent peaks at the face of Maruishi Mountain in the Earth Country. As mountain-folk himself, Kaji recognized the purpose of the runes inscribed in the supporting bricks of the stadium, but coyly asked about them, if only to spark some conversation during a walk through the eerie spaces. Not a single step went unwatched as Kaji was led through the place.

So then Kaji was left to his devices in a secure space and the allusion of privacy. It was all hurry up and wait, or so he thought as he took a moment to check his inventory one last time. There was a polished luster on the hilt and pommel of Eelspine, which rested securely on his back, angled between his shoulders in a black sheath. The emerald embedded in the pommel had it’s usual faint glow, resonating with its master.
A number of bobbles and full pouches lined Kaji’s belt. Even the strange lantern he found in his cellar was fastened to his waist, proving to be an oddity for most shinobi to carry, especially a fighter like Kaji. A green scarf was wrapped around his collar, if only for style continuity, in many loose layers as if it served a purpose.

-------------------------

And there he remained, waiting in that cold blue room until he began to feel akin to times from his past best left forgotten. The confines were like the cold cells of the Onyxian Sanctum, a world away and years behind him. But then a sound similar to perpetual thunder became raucous. It was fanfare inciting a bustling crowd as the time had come, and soundwaves shook his feeble locker room. Ryuunosuke emerged again to provide a clue, foretelling that the time had come. Then sunlight penetrated the space and Kaji was beckoned to begin his stride towards the next fated battle.

Stepping forth, he had to remind himself that “this is more than a fight for sport.” That ideal was quite false for the fortunate others, but not Kaji Okada. As he took his first paces onto the field of battle, he was searching high and wide. He raised a hand over his brow to shield his sight from the sheer brightness and looked through the stands at the countless spectators in a sea of souls. The sounds coming from them mashed into a menagerie of noise: a complete wall of sound. The only sound capable of squeezing through was the music of the loudspeaker and whatever announcements accompanied it.

The flat ground of the arena’s floor was a bit of a disappointment. Kaji favored options such as taking the high-ground like Obi-wan and using pockets of shade to create opportunities for deception. Though, whether he’d need those tactics remained unseen as he awaited the coming of his opponent. Even before his surprising vision of an opponent appeared before him, Kaji’s expectations took a twist when he saw his own name and his opponent’s name on a large display, along with their respective nations. “Azusa,” he merely formed the name with his lips, embedding it to memory before focusing on another fact— “she’s a Sunan.” The latter was actually spoken, albeit under breath, with the slightest hint of venom in the words. Kaji had met and fought a sunan before; some even dared to refer to Kaen Shinku as a rival to Kaji, though Kaji never considered such trivialities when it came to his opponents. Aye, Kaen was powerful and their first contest was memorable— but it was the ties that bound Kaen which were burned into Kaji’s memories still. Now Kaji really was curious. Would this Azusa Aikayume also prove to be some cultist mongrel and worshipper of Mother Suna? Jashinist filth parading by another name— same tricks, just another false idol? “I hope she is,” Kaji thought, nervously nibbling on his lower lip. “It will make not holding back a whole lot easier.”

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

Oh, how the journey had felt like it had taken forever! Azusa was unaccustomed to leaving very far from the borders of Sunagakure, her previous excursions limited to only part of the desert she had called home. Never had she ventured out further to see what lies beyond the sands...And even now, despite seeing more of what the world had to offer her, her emerald eyes were only metaphorically focused on the destination; Kurosawa, and the tournament hosted there.

The people! So many people from all corners of the world!
The shops! So many vendors carrying trinkets from anywhere imaginable!
The tension! How the city itself was built to channel the excitement surrounding the event!

She liked it, she loved it here. She was certain she could lose herself among the streets for days without growing bored...But held herself back. Her focus was on the tournament, and her specific reason for joining. Not the city of Kurosawa.

-----

....But her self-restraint only went so far. A fox of many whims, when an unexpected "guest" had arrived the evening before the tournament she was absolutely delighted. Never one to turn down a gift offered to her, the fox woman clapped her hands together in delight. "How gracious of you. The journey has been long, and my feet, sore. The ground here is much harsher than the desert sands..." It was then that he had explained how, fortunately, he just so happen to have the best massage techniques in the city, and was confident in being able to knead the exhaustion with the most gently firm touches. After a quick round of questioning, Azusa discovered he was a man of -many- such talents that she could certainly find some use for, and accepted his company into her room.

"Riyota, it seems we have a guest." Azusa explained, neglecting to mention to the man that she was not alone. Her tails were hidden, as they had been the duration of their trip...but if they had not been they most certainly would have been swaying in eager delight; she had come up with a most amusing trial, err, -gift- to present Riyota with. Although it was "slightly" skewed in her favor. "This is Miroku Riyota, my personal knight. He has carried my supplies all the way from Sunagakure, so if I am tired, I can only imagine how exhausted my poor Riyota must be..." See, rather than keep this service for herself, her "good nature" had decided to bestow it upon Riyota. "Please get acquainted; I will not accept anything less than the most thorough of services. In fact, I shall even assist; let it never be said that Lady Azusa is selfish and close minded." The vixen had full intent of making the guest earn every yen of that advanced payment, and expanding her knight's comfort zone. That sparkle in her eye? It was only because she had Riyota's best interests at heart, and most definitely not because she enjoyed seeing him uncomfortable...

...Had she mentioned she loved this city?

------

And then dawn came. And she certainly had a bounce in her step; and to think, this was the start of her stay here! The fox eagerly anticipated what other 'gifts' awaited her further into this trip.

And so she met the second guest of her trip. "...Good morning, Ryuunosuke. I thank you for your concern." She spoke, offering a polite bow. While Azusa was never one to doubt her own capabilities (for better and worse), as Lady of the Toraono, and former Priestess of the Aikayume before that, she was used to escorts around her. She was also familiar with eluding them...However, the previous night had been enough to tame the Kitsune's mischievous nature for a while at least.

The most difficult part of the route was not accepting any of the gifts along the way. Azusa thrived on praise and attention, and found it a shame to let them go to waste. She could have sworn she had caught her likeness emblazoned on a few shirts; how could she not be thrilled? But reluctantly, she would not interfere with Ryuunosuke's task, until at last they had arrived to the stadium; a gargantuan structure of the finest craftsmanship. She could not fathom the amount of people that could be contained within...

And soon she joined them, albeit, in her own guarded room as she awaited her match. She pulled a scroll from a holster hidden under her ornate dress; and in the time before the battle, prepared herself for the trial to come. She was eager to try to custom made armor she specifically had the Toraono craft for this occasion, a mix of her traditional red-white-gold robes, but with aesthetic armor added on over more suited for battle. Her weapon, a sacred blade of the Byakko clan, polished.

It was time. Azusa stepped through the doorway into the arena, but nothing could have prepared her for what had lay beyond.

The people! So tiny in crowd! The aura, so overwhelming. And at the center of it all, the arena; a grand stage awaiting her and her opponent. The excitement? She had experienced nothing like this back in her home. She had a specific purpose for coming here to this tournament, but even that took a backseat to the newfound enthrallment for the arena...

She originally intended to mask her Aikayume features while in a foreign territory, but the tension of the imminent battle persuaded her to otherwise drop the transformation; her golden tails "blossomed" into existence behind her, protruding from her specially designed red-white kimono. The one, two, three, seven tails swayed behind her with each step, each one an outlet for the excitement building within her hardly-five-foot-body and seeming to shimmer much like the long golden strands of her hair under the sun's light. She felt her pulse quickening within her chest, and practically felt as if she could hear it over the drone of sounds around her.

Her opponent had the honor of being first foreign shinobi she had personally encountered; "Hmm...So this is what a foreign shinobi looks like..." and her curiosity was naturally piqued. "You stand before Lady Toraono-Aikayume Azusa of the Sand. I am most interested in seeing if there are actually any shinobi worth noting beyond the desert..." She spoke while shutting her paper fan closed and tossing it into the sea of spectators. She was eager to begin.

[Stuff Sent. Agreed! Lets enjoy it ^^]

- Kaji you didn't have enough Ap for everything, so I skipped an action to the next one that you had AP for.
- pink damage is illusory damage.

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

The battle began, and the fox woman wasted no time closing the distance between them in a single blink of an eye. Though he may have attempted to avoid her, she was nothing if not stubbornly persistent in claiming what she desired. Her fingers moved to slip between his own, grasping his hands within hers and moving them away from the center of their bodies, almost as if preparing for a dance. Her grasp had just enough force to immobilize him without being excessive uncomfortable, yet never weakening her hold. "Let me get a closer look."

Black hair, unkempt; minus. But the thin facial hair? Plus. Dark clothing; minus. Plain dark clothing; super minus; nowhere near enough embroidery. The cloud nin's choice of attire said that he was one who preferred to avoid attention; a stark contrast to the bright colors worn by the Fox Priestess who craved it. The weapon on his back was interesting, but what really redeemed some demerits was..."Hmm...You would think a Village would send their champions with attire that is a bit more...well, anything. However, that scarf is not unpleasant to look at." She admitted, while manifesting an ornate gold (what else?) mirror, levitating above them, during her audit of the Cloud Village's shinobi. "Now if you would gaze into my mirror here you will see the image of how you could impro—"

Wait

Something was wrong. She could feel it. Her attention was drawn elsewhere; her eyes lost focus of the enemy in her grip, and instead began to scan through the sea of spectating faces surrounding them, her golden ears twitching and shifting as they attempted to locate what she perceived as the true threat.

There. In the stands. A curious gap in sea of spectators, at the center of which was...Riyota. More specifically, him and some unfamiliar woman who seemed entirely too close to him for her own liking. Nevermind that there literally were seats separating the two at the time. See, Azusa was fiercely territorial over what she believed to be hers...which itself was a very broad category; it would be easier to list things she didn't feel entitled to. (What are you doing? Of all the seats you sit right there. Move at least two rows down. Do not speak to that vixen. Do not even look at her. How am I to focus on the fight when-)

Oh.
Ohhhhhhhh.
...She had not realized that during her momentary jealousy she had subconsciously began radiating chakra, as wispy tendrils of blue flame from her ears and tails. Or that her Persona had fallen harmlessly to the ground nearby, embedding into the arena's floor with its razor sharp edges. Or the fact that there was no longer an enemy in her hands.

"My sincerest apologies...Now where were we?"

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

So, this wasn’t quite what Kaji was expecting. As his opponent came forward and introduced herself, Kaji was almost in disbelief of the stark contrast between his last opponent and Lady Azusa Toraono-Aikayume. She was not gruff and broody, but rather elegant, with beauty that was as distracting as any deceptive ploy could be. As he scanned her (purely for strategic reasons) he had to double take on her distinguished features: namely her fur-brimmed ears and many tails with their golden hues. The idea of harming such a creature made Kaji pout, but he could not afford to refrain from this fight, and surely she would not. “Those ears” Kaji only mouthed the words in silence, observing her, with a hint of pink flushing his cheeks.

“I am Kaji of House Okada, first of my name” he answered, honoring Azusa’s introduction with his own. “Earthborn, but a Cloud shinobi by bonds.” With a focused gaze, Kaji committed the moment to memory and knew that she would also have a tale worth telling for a lifetime once their fight was done. The characters were established, and now came the first act of their harrowing adventure.

And they were off to the races, with Kaji’s emerald orbs observing his opponent on the charge. She was formidably fast, but nothing Kaji couldn't handle as she came forth with a missing jab. Her pressing attack was impressive, or so Kaji noted as he stepped back from that left but was caught with a right. Her claw sliced a thin gash through his new garment across his midsection. Their motions were like a dance, spinning wildly in close quarters combat. To be so elegant she was not so shy, but even pressing her attack could not alleviate Lady Azusa from the elusiveness that was Kaji Okada. In the bright-of-day, deception cannot be done with ease, and so Kaji kept within the grasp of Azusa’s attack, yet melted away within her sea of many golden tails. Was it rude or brilliant? By the time they separated and Kaji gained space, his scent of citrus and firewood was still on her.

He was eager to be free of her, of that Kaji was certain, though he did feel her strike him with something before his escape from her clutches. There was a sting from where she nicked him with something on his left thigh. “Always working in layers and never missing a chance” balked Kaji as he accepted her complexity; “you really are nothing like Kaen Shinku.” There was no way this fox was aligned with the same agency as his last sunan foe. No, Azusa wasn’t rushing to decimate Kaji for Mother Suna, nor did she seem obsessed with anything— though someone did steal her attention.

Azusa was about to begin a poorly-timed critique of Kaji’s attire when someone else stole her away. The appearance of her mirror only confirmed Kaji’s suspicions of her possession of magic; that she was, in fact, some descendant of a Kyuubi. “You should appreciate my simplicity” countered Kaji despite Azusa’s attention looking to the stands, “I wouldn’t want to steal from your appeal.” And by the time the fox mistress brought her attention back to her foe, he nearly vanished again. Kaji was concealed by a light bending technique invented and mastered by his ancestors of the Hidden Stone. “I too work with intricacy— let me show you.”

The battle is heating up!

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

They were opposite ends of a spectrum, like silk to wool.
A warrior’s resolve is but one string of thread in the tapestry that is battle. It is a tale woven through action, which furiously intertwines deeds. Some deeds are celebrated and adorned with vivid colors that reflect those efforts, while others go unseen like shadows or the insulation of a thick cloak. The fabric of Kaji Okada’s scarf followed behind him like a flag whipping in the severe wind. His approach was fearless as he engaged each wicked obstacle set by Azusa. Her sorcery was vast; Kaji could sense the distortions assaulting his senses, trying to break his resolve for the fight. He dashed left and dipped right, but the opponent persisted, blending truth and illusion to a devastating result. But through Azusa’s illusions, Kaji felt the call of his blade, Eelspine, aching to enter the fight and draw blood. “Not yet” whispered Kaji. Something was up Kaji’s sleeve— in a literal sense.

He pulled back the cuff of his sleeve to reveal one forearm covered in detailed body art. Vivid red scales and golden glyphs made the image of a magnificent red dragon— the Thousand Scaled God, the deity of the Oasis clan kin. Kaji began weaving hand seals and drove a thumb painted with his own blood down the forearm, completing the ritual.
If you ask Kaji Okada, he will tell you that shadows are a shinobi’s place. It is in the shadows where you learn patience, vigilance, and the hunter’s instinct. And a mighty silver haze erupted, swallowing him into the comfort of obscurity. The coming of the Red Titan created a shift in the atmosphere, seemingly evening the playing field— though, the fox’s wicked curse would see that balance crumble.

The sound of his tongue flicking in the air led the crimson beast to quickly identify the strangeness around them. “Guardian, what have you done?” The voice breaking through the silver haze was heavy with sharply-delivered consonants: it was the sound of Rhokul, Kaji’s Equalizer. “What is this place?”
“An arena—” Kaji answered, but he was quickly off by an irate lizard.
“You’ve committed heresy to the pact” Hissed Rhokul.
“NO” refuted Kaji. “There’s more at stake, friend. Please, I need you now more than ever. ‘This battle is for my life— my wife and babe.”
“The opponent has tainted you, Guardian,” countered the red titan with wisdom alluding to much more. He could have vanished right then if he saw fit, yet Rhokul took a pace forth. “Show me this enemy you face.”

And then the man and beast became a hurricane of force, charging in tandem with Kaji taking the lead with fleeting grace. Eelspine was singing as he let the blade fly, and it took a bright emeraldine glow as Kaji unleashed the pent-up fury. Every cut from the honed edge dug deep as Kaji charged, yet his foe showed no sign of slowing. Kaji thrust high and doubled back to cross her center, cutting twice. He slung the blade again and cut the air, but he came back again with a disruptive spin, completing the combination as he began cutting ribbons into Azusa’s fine silks.

But between the flurry of spinning blades came the red titan, who cut in like an aggressive dancer. Rhokul was a specimen who towered over the average human, but not by an incredible difference unless he willed himself to grow. Smooth crimson scales lined his form from head to tail, which was lean, lanky and muscular. Golden eyes were focused on Azusa as Rhokul charged with long barbs from his tail plucked and held like sabers. He spun towards Lady Aikayume with his infinite supply of blades whirling, ferociously on the attack until Azusa found her chance to clash with Kaji again. “This is more like I was expecting,” Kaji said at some point in his duel with the sunan champion. Her charge was challenging and visceral, even savage as blow after blow pushed Kaji closer towards his limits of close quarters combat. She had him on his heels, perhaps even feeling his age for the first time. Nothing short of expert stepping and timely parrying kept Kaji with a head on his shoulders and in one piece at all. “Your swordplay technique is impressive” he admitted with a rushed breath. “But don’t get cocky— just let me know when you’re ready to start fighting for real.”

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

Kaji of the Okada clan, from the Cloud village. For the first foreign shinobi she had met, he certainly was a most intriguing individual. Appearance was only one part afterall; performance was the other. "My, how clever! It seems I cannot help but to give you anything less than my full attention. I do love someone who keeps me active." The fox spirit-blooded woman admired during their battle. She was fascinated by his deft movements; if she so much as blinked he would vanish! Keeping so close to her that her keen hearing had hardly helped pinpoint him, and using her own tails to mask his movement? Brilliant! He always seemed just a second ahead, never -quite- where she expected him to be. It was a most enjoyable game; like swinging at a pinata just abit too high!

Of course, she was quick too; and inevitably when some of her strikes hit, or when he slowed down for even a moment, the Celestial Mirror levitating nearby, would be quick to seize the opportunity to strike. As the personification of her mind, it of course took a form representing her vanity. And like Azusa herself, its decorated appearance and bright flames hid the sharp edges, making it akin to a rotating saw when it struck out wildly...But as a weapon, that was not its greatest power.
The real threat were the illusory curses she could cast on those reflected on the mirror's surface. In this case, the cloud shinobi. "...Is something the matter? I have heard that stress can lead to certain dysfunction..." Her opponent had seemed like a perceptive type; surely he would have noticed something was off during the course of their battle...

---

At a certain point during their duel, their fight was broken up momentarily by a burst of smoke. And even before hearing the sharp voice or seeing the red figure within, she felt a chill crawled across her back and caus her ears to stand tall on edge. (This presence....) Her eyes narrowed into a glare. "...Disgusting. How dare you disturb the Spirits for a fight such as this. Their favor is not meant to be abused." Azusa began. Even now, despite being Lady of the Toraono and no longer Priestess of the Aikayume, she still considered herself a servant of Spirits. "...Forgive me proud spirit, but I will not allow your power to used for such things." Even if the beast he shared a pact with forgave Kaji, the exiled shrine maiden felt insulted on its behalf. She could not unsummon what was already present; but she was able to suppress the creatures power long enough to cover their battle.

...Although she was not blind to the opportunity it provided her, and her momentary annoyance was replaced with smirk; she had always believed herself to be blessed by the many spirits of the world...And here was an opponent who had a bond strong enough to summon one into battle. "...Very well-" She exclaimed while reaching for the blade sheathed on her back; the Liberator of Darkness, a large Odachi great weapon gifted to her by the Byakko clan. "-Let it never be said that Toraono-Aikayume Azusa does not accept any and all challenges before her!" She made no effort to hide the smile revealing her eager lust for the battle ahead.

She could not turn away a challenge, and met it the only way she knew how; blade for blade, claw for claw. Kaji and the Spirit made a powerful pair, each playing off of the others movements, lurking for that perfect moment to strike. They were strong; were they ambushing someone in a cavern, dark forest, or even empty alley, she was certain these two hunters would have no trouble dispatching their prey. "...I agree, Kaji of the Okada. I forbid you from ending this battle any time soon; not when there is still so much left to enjoy."

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

During the brief moments between her opponents attacks, she saw a shadow move within the sea of spectators. Moving closer...closer...closer...like a spider, sneaking across her web to snatch a helpless target.

She saw.

Azusa's claws ached, yearning to cut. Yes, she hated thinking of them as claws rather than nails; it sounded so beastial, an insult against the refined image she worked hard at cultivating. But that image shattered. Not because she was insulted; her opponent had done well to keep a level head inspite of Azusa's provocations. Not because her opponent had backed her into a corner; she was doing well to not give a single inch despite being outnumbered. No.

But because someone clearly had no sense of personal space. And she wasn't talking only about Kurohane Kitai.

Logically, if the woman wanted a seat, then her knight should have offered one. Was he upset with the previous night's festivities, and decided to spite her? If so, he succeeded extraordinarily. And what of that little blonde girl in front of him, giving him some kind of indecent show despite barely being a pup herself? With the unsettling gaze, Azusa may have felt chills from her unnatural...affection. Were she not currently livid.

She hated having her possessions touched, and was certain that she had ingrained into his mind that he belonged to her. But perhaps she was too soft on him; afterall, if her fight against Kaji had taught her anything, it was that she needed to keep a most firm grip on what she desired; otherwise, he just might slip through the tiniest of cracks. She certainly owed this Cloud shinobi for teaching her this most valuable lesson on how to keep her things in order.

"....." She was silent, her motions being the clenching of her fingers into a fist, cracking very, very audibly.

...And she smashed her fist straight through her persona, her sacred mirror. Despite the fact that the artifact could normally withstand a great deal of punishment, in this situation it shattered as if it were a mere common object, breaking into countless shards.

But not without exploding outward as vast wave of illusory foxfire flames in Kaji's general direction. As an attack that was the pure embodiment of Azusa's spite, it scaled well with her flawed personality; we're talking no less than 5-digits of damage! (Fist of Sin)

...

"Vanity Dawn." She spoke. Words had power, and these two represented the purest description of her very being, serving as words of awakening for the sacred blood within her.

The lingering shards of her mirror, floating in the air, shined with a brilliant light that momentarily pierced through the foggy mist summoned by her opponent. A light which seemed to enshroud the priestess, absorbed by her red-white armored robes and dying her hair a pristine platinum color. Runic red seals emblazoned along her arms, legs, back, chest and face. (Tabula rasa) Yes, she had chastised her opponent for abusing the power of spirits. Yes, she was doing a very similar thing by channeling that power. Yes, she was a hypocrite.

Her shimmering white tails spread apart and reached out toward the reptile summon, stretching far beyond their natural length in order to ensnare it. And as for Kaji...

"Tell me, Cloud one. How is infidelity punished in your home village?" Yes, this was a most urgent manner for her.

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

Golden eyes shined like priceless bobbles gleaming in a treasure trove, diligently monitoring the spinning world around them. Images of crossing blades and shinobi magic reflected off of them, as he, Rhokul, found his place with the dance of battle. And what a battle this was— not the most impressive to a creature such as Rhokul, but a foreign experience, unlike anything he encountered before. Sure, his father had told him stories of the humans and their fighting pits. In fact, there were countless tales of the Oasis Clan’s greatest warriors being exposed to the violence humans could create in these coliseums… centuries of enslavement before the Guardian had come to set things on a corrected course. But now, the disappointment within Rhokul burned like taking a hot cattle prod— the kind his ancestors took when they were taken as property. His sensitive snout detested the scents of countless beady-eyed two-leggers. Imagine the trust it took for Rhokul to stay and honor the pact for Kaji Okada with so many humans joined to watch their bloodshed. “His wife and babe” groused the alpha-lizard, who had followed Kaji Okada into the fray just moments ago.

And to make things worse, the very source of Rhokul’s might was being metered by some kind of curse. He recognized it the very moment he arrived at this forsaken place, lagging behind sluggishly with labored steps. Nature’s chakra was his lifeline and he was weak, even feeling a rare sensation of fear that his might was stolen by the Kyuubi's descendant. Rhokul tried to warn Kaji, yet something was different about the Guardian in this fight. What was he trying and failing to prove in this place? Even Azusa recognized how uncouth it was for Kaji to bring Rhokul into their fight, which was but a petty contest.

The Red Titan bared his fangs as a show of disdain when the disavowed priestess spoke like she’d be doing him a favor by defeating Kaji. How could there be such a rift in their bond? No, Rhokul couldn’t have that— but as Asuza unveiled a sudden strike through her enchanted mirror, Kaji was reeling and Rhokul paid the cost for his contemplation. A mere punch packed with enchanted force had Kaji sailing, but Rhokul emerged with his long tail reaching. The cuff of blade-like barbs on his tail softened to the point of resembling long fur as Rhokul caught Kaji and set him back on two unsteady feet. “Thanks,” said Kaji in an absent-minded tone, though Rhokul paid it no mind and took an all-fours stance to Kaji’s left.
He flicked his tongue and admitted a finding, “You’ve broken something; I can taste the bone marrow from here.” There wasn't a hint of doubt in the lizard, who bared the god tongue.
“Just a rib or two, nothing serious” Kaji answered between challenged breaths. “I have remedied her curse though… Now it’s time the tables turn.” And there was the look Rhokul knew so well; despite his setbacks, there was the look of at least one more scheme left in Kaji Okada. Seeing the battle in layers often meant taking risks and stumbling along the way, but now Kaji was seeming more confident despite previous setbacks.

And then Kaji set forth in a curving path, dashing on a flanking path with Rhokul reading his pattern and moving in from an opposite course. Kaji had Eelspine trailing with the hilt gripped tightly in one hand. The emerald in its pommel had chakra coursing through the blade, while Kaji’s left hand began weaving single-handed seals with practiced precision. He was closing the distance from Azusa, and as he gained ground he suddenly multiplied by four through plumes of magical smoke! He was attacking with shadow clones, no doubt, though his variant hand seals indicated a different machination. Azusa took the bait and almost dispersed one doppelganger but it persevered.

With the sudden shift from two to five foes, Azusa also revealed a change of plans and began a transformation, finding a way to somehow become even more fascinating. Her shades of gold became a vivid, platinum white, the ultimate contrast to Kaji’s placid black colorways. The carbon copies were spreading their positions, and not overly eager to engage. One of them created a silver haze which blanketed the Hisashī Zenshōsen Arena. The veil of mist caused Azusa to glow like a grounded angel, while the many Kaji were coming and going, resembling shadowy shapes. The humidity was sizzling against Kaji’s Eelspine, which made a low hymn. It glowed in an emerald tint like a saber of unremitting light. He even replicated the sound somehow between the duplicates.

But then, through the shade came a shift in the blanketing fog as a force rippled through. The air howled. A burst of ether was aimed at Azusa, but it barely grazed her compared to what it would have done had she not side-stepped it so timely. Despite the clear daylight betraying him, Kaji renewed his power over trickery and deception. However, as Rhokul’s form created a shadow looming over Azusa, she swept him aside and down with tails galore. He let out a grunt as he fell, damning the lasting effects of the curse Kaji claimed to have broken. Unlike Kaji, Rhokul wasn’t blushing while bound by the fine fur. Had he known Kaji could enjoy such a thing, Rhokul might have just gone home.

And with his ally seemingly held hostage, there was a sudden pause in Kaji’s charge. Azusa had something else in mind, a distraction plaguing her. And so she asked for Kaji’s take on the subject of infidelity. The crowd was as calm as it had ever been; as if silence might help them see through the haze. The many obscured silhouettes of Kaji Okada were walking about in one large circle, all bearing their glowing sabers. From man to man, all four indulged her, speaking fragments of fluid sentences. “I have called many boroughs home, and with every new land came new ideas. 'In the Land of Earth, love is free and has no value, and so it is shared. 'One could have several spouses— or as the saying goes, uno no puede tener demasiados bonos.” The language he uttered was native Iwan, which he spoke fluently. His delivery was smooth, and natural to his accent. Kaji bothered translating for his new friend, though. “One cannot have too many bonds.”

Of course, for a society like the Earth Country who was rooted in militarized culture and polytheism, some of their ideas were kind of out there. If a man could worship five Gods, why not have five wives as well? Kaji couldn’t have imagined putting up with more than one Yuii though, not that they couldn’t experiment with numbers enough with all their clone jutsu between the pair. A life-long bond was just too sacred for Kaji to share with anyone other than just his beloved. Of course, this brought Kaji to consider his own predicament, and his mind too wandered the blue woman somewhere among the masses.“Now, my true home— The Cloud, plays by rules you might be more accustomed to, given your own nobility, my Lady Azusa. ‘Arranged marriages… fine folk paired up by even finer folk, for the good of all involved.” He dripped enough sarcasm to fill a barrel like he usually did with his swagger. “To cheat is to dishonor the affected family, and when you earn their scorn, they are quick to erase problems. The adulterer disappears, and their children are dumped into an obscure monastery on another mountain.” The squad of Kaji came to a stop with all four facing inward, posed to pounce like hunting cats on the prowl. He was hunting, ever so keenly waiting for his opportunity against the powerful adversary. Kaji had to free Rhokul and put an end to the contest, yet Azusa’s question had him feeling curious. Perhaps he was genuine, or it was just part of the game when Kaji laid the bait. “Someone out there must really be bothering you fox… Who is she?”

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

"Unlike Kaji, Rhokul wasn’t blushing while bound by the fine fur. Had he known Kaji could enjoy such a thing, Rhokul might have just gone home." -- This line made me laugh. And that picture above is beautiful.
JTZgCka.png

"I am envious of the experiences you must have had...What a beautiful dialect the Earth country has." Azusa spoke as she listened to her opponent's -to include the clones- recounting his vastly different experiences between two very different regions he had called home. Were they not amidst a battle, she would have enjoyed coaxing further snips of that melodious earthen tongue from him. "Aikayume —my clan by birth— do not normally marry, and would have been at home in the Earth country. "....Were she not possessive.

Their conversation continued even between their strikes; Azusa's coming from glowing, flaming magatama-shaped discs manifested from the glowing runes on her body, levitating around her much like her mirrior previously. Kaji's, came from his deft swordplay that faded from her vision with each slash, accompanied by a series of clones completing the other's sentences just as they did each others attacks. "Erasing problems...Disappearing...Dumping into the mountains...." The bright haired shinobi repeated, mulling over the implications...and gradually, her quizzical expression turned into a smile. "...How brilliant! To think such a refined method exists beyond the desert!" Of course, she would have to tweak it; suit it to her tastes. "But..."Disappearance" is such a harsh word, and I am nothing if not merciful. Perhaps...."rehabilitation"...would be an option. Conditioning for when I am unable to prevent others from being..." Her eyes again darted into the crowd upon Kaji's question. "...Tempted." A period of time secluded in some distant mountain with a target of her choice. A few weeks -perhaps even a month- of her personal guidance, intended to correct what she deemed a "flaw" in whatever it was that caught her attention. Rehabilitation to prevent wandering eyes or desires...Or to stay away from what was rightfully hers.

Amidst her wandering mind, her attacks became sloppier; unfocused. Kaji had seized this opportunity to slip between her strikes, wavering in and out of her view, and deflect her next attack while countering her with a clean sword blow to her side, causing her to recoil backward and halt her assault. This punishment caused her smug expression to flip to a scowl. "Ugh...W-Well done..." But, Azusa was confident this display of skilled swordplay by the cloud shinobi was not enough to stop the flow of battle progressing in her favor. Too little, too late....If he would just slow down his movements!

Her tails were sensitive; under the highly pressurized attack of the clones they weakened and drew away from their binging hold on Rhokul. But like a mass of coiling serpents behind her, they again lashed out when the attacks ceased; Kaji was a handful even without the Reptile King's presence. Negating its powers was key, much like how catching her opponent between his stealthy movements was key.

...And throughout their battle, the shards of her mirror shimmered within the misty arena, steadily growing brighter during the round. Perhaps Kaji had a hunch during this time. Or, perhaps he had written the shards as acting just as any other mirror would have in that situation. But the shards shined once more; and with it, the kitsune's curse again in play. Regardless of whether he experienced this illusory binding as his body locking up, or a tangible hallucination holding him in place, or even simply just being suspended in the middle of his motion, the result was the same...

His movement would stop.

"I have caught you, Kaji Okada...This would be called "checkmate". However, you have done well; as a reward for this battle and the wisdom you have left me, I shall grant you one of two gifts."
The fox said, outstretching her arm to the side in a melodramatic manner.
"The first...I will accept your surrender, sparing the pain of further conflict. You may enjoy the opening night of this tournament from somewhere other than a hospital bed. You need only acknowledge the power of Sunagakure —the power of Azusa— by kneeling before me; my bind should allow you to do so of your own will. Know that there is no shame in lowering oneself before a Sunan shinobi."
She offered. The tournament setting, her 'grand stage' as she saw it, brought out and amplified the absolute worst qualities she had to offer.
"The second...I will allow you to bear witness to my finest technique, sure to be the talk of the tournament and the lands beyond. You would have the distinct honor of being the first of many opponents to fall to it, I am certain."
Much like in the first post, "gifts" offered by Azusa were nearly entirely in her favor, only classified as gifts by the furthest stretches of logic. Still, the fact that she had given her opponent a choice was more than others could say...

"The choice is yours."

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

Kaji was beginning to gain some ground against the mysterious ways of his opponent and not a minute too soon. There was always strength in one’s ability to adapt, and though Azusa’s fighting style was difficult to work around, Kaji’s versatility presented the tools he needed to resist and overcome the many traps and vicious attacks. And so he battled back, finally giving her a taste of his counter-offense.

“There’s more where that came from,” said Kaji said in a gruff tone as he eyed Azusa gripping her fresh wound. In truth, Kaji’s attacking wasn’t so one-dimensional as regular blade works, but the deception caused by his hidden mist had the truth behind his attacks lost in the shroud. The timing of Kaji’s offensive had Azusa missing him with every attempt to retaliate. It appeared that she wasn’t very accurate without her wicked binds and curses— head to head, Kaji’s water dance stance had him side-stepping each blow, dipping in and out of the haze. But then the sum of the fox’s strategy took hold, and shard’s of her mirror finally caught Kaji; it was like a dark force holding him in place, pressing upon him, and stealing the wind from his lungs. He was gritting his teeth and his eyes pinched shut as he bared the agony of the foreign darkness engrossing him. So this was how it would be?

“No” Kaji answer, refusing both outcomes proposed in Azusa's cocky ultimatum. “This is the beginning of your reckoning, Azusa... Even if I lose, you will be defeated and shown humility in this damnable tournament. 'Can't you see how fruitless this is?” He could feel the force trying to contort him, pressing onto those broken ribs and squeezing the blood out of his open wounds. “Even if I fail, there will be balance… The stronger you think yourself now will be the harder you fall from hubris.”

This may have very well been Kaji’s last stand in the battle with Azusa, but he wasn’t done fighting yet. Even the slightest misstep would have him back at her throat. No, Kaji Okada was not done. If he fell, his light would spread and be carried by his allies— the good was never so easily vanquished. As long as Azusa continued on her current path, she would not succeed. “As long as ego drives you, you are destined to fail. My finest days are behind me, but you have power— and no direction ahead of you besides the darkness…” Kaji knew it the moment he first saw Azusa, she reminded him of someone. He knew this girl, her motives, and how her tale would someday end. “You need a teacher” he claimed, refusing the choking grip of her bind as if he could have broken it anytime if he so chose. “I can show you the ways of the shinobi— how to survive the dark path you’re treading down. Hope for salvation is not too lost, Sunan.”

What was Azusa fighting for beside glory? Kaji knew just what drove him to this sunken pit where they waged senseless battle. Somewhere in the stands was his beloved blue woman with sapphire eyes, witnessing the events unfold among countless strange faces. There were friends and countrymen watching and betting their coin, believing in Kaji Okada as if his legend had reached farther than the bard songs in Land of Lightning’s taverns. Through the blanket of force, he could feel their hands on his back pushing him forward. They said he could not lose— they called for victory. But if he did not succeed, the only one Kaji would owe an answer to was his comrade, the furious Rhokul, who always championed Kaji’s causes but never desired to fight for sport.

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

</FONTFACE>
A Letter to My Daughter said:
“In this shinobi life I have done many deeds; my fortune has sometimes led to triumph, while others were much less glorious. As your father I’ve spent these years hoping to leave a legacy you can benefit from; if my heirloom blade does not serve you as well as it did me, I do hope you learn from this tale as I did. And as I write my story as legend, take from my victories what you would from my failures— lessons on the value of persevering through your trials, and having the patience to find your way when the path is unclear. In the battle with Azusa Toraono-Aikayume, I found myself fighting a new kind of foe, yet the battle shared so many similarities to an experience from my youth.

I have told you the story of the Hydreel and the Deep Mines of Arcadia; a monstrosity with six heads and countless serrated fangs the size of spearheads. Pitch-black eyes attuned to seeing in the lightless caves presented a predator who mastered its environment, rendering the disciplines of my training nearly useless. Against the odds I followed through, using cunning to find opportunities, and patience to save my strength until that moment surfaced. When I split the beast’s back with the cut of my saber, it drank from the life force and cut a clean line from end to end. It was that day that I learned my sword's name: Eelspine. Know that legends are never made through easily won battles. And though I won that day, I could have easily fallen: not all of your father’s stories have been so lucky.

And on that day in the pits of the Hizashi Zenshouzen, it was as if the entire world was watching us. Some tellings of the outcome may differ, but whatever. Foxtails. I hope my story only does the memory of that day justice… Perhaps in my old age I should start corroborating these stories with your mother, as she was in the crowd that day— and so were you, but you were just our plum-child back then."

Re: Aikayume Azusa vs Okada Kaji [Event - Fight]

For all the shortcomings of her mind, Azusa would not betray her word once given. Had her opponent submitted himself before her, she would have restrained herself from further attacks. At least, attacks of non-verbal nature.

But she was glad that he did not kneel. Not because she wanted to perform her attack, but because the greatest prizes were the ones hardest to claim. she was enjoying their duel, enjoying seeing what, exactly, made a Kumo shinobi.

...However, she did not expect him to actually begin speaking about her loss as if it were inevitable. "...-Excuse- me? Do you not understand the situation you are in? I would expect my opponent to understand my capabilities more than anyone." Azusa began. Normally, she would have wrote off his words as foolishness; the final musings of a man cursing at an inevitable fate. But what really effected her was how her spoke of her Ego leading to Failure and Darkness. Words and concepts that were not unfamiliar to Azusa, and things she had certainly heard before...

...Why did they always say that??

Then desert fox clenched her teeth and glared. Where did his confidence come from? Azusa was someone who's confidence reached only as far as she had the upper hand. The fact that Kaji was able to remain composed even when faced with what Azusa believed to be an unwinnable situation made her feel...insecure. Why did Kaji's will to press forward not waver in the slightest?
Did he want her to strike?
Did he have some kind of trap or counter in mind?
Was...he able to see something that she could not? Something she was missing?

Azusa felt doubt. "It is not ego that drives me...I gained strength so that I would not fail. So that I would have the power to correct any mistakes before me..." Her past was filled with dark mistakes; if she didn't believe in her own strength to avoid making them in the future, then what did she have? "...You underestimate my power!"

"Ninja Art: Seventh Heaven."<i></i>

Qx2UzN1.png

....Continued

"Ninja Art: Seventh Heaven."<i></i> Wisps of flame trailed off of the glowing scarlet runes along Azusa's body, forming over a dozen flaming magatama-shaped blades that acted as her Persona in her fused state. In just over a single second, the area before her was subjected to the simultaneous attack of multiple flaming magatama blades. Lacking in neither power nor speed, Azusa was certain that this attack would have torn her target asunder and acted as a beacon for the medical support on standby to enter the ring.

There was a brief disturbance during the attack. Some unseen force performed by Kaji that could just as easily have altered the course of the attack, literally. Had the situation be replayed, the results could have easily shifted in his favor...But fortune smiled upon Azusa.

And even though Kaji remained standing after her self-proclaimed ultimate attack, the fact that it was a "success" corrected the momentary hiccup in her confidence.

And so...she rose the back of her hand up to her face. And she laughed.

The laugh.

"I see...taking advantage of my trusting nature with ruse...To think you had nearly outfoxed me! My, how clever!" Her tails loosened their hold on Rhokul, and both he and Kaji had managed to slip away with their stealthy movements. And even, amidst her stress, managed to restrain her.

"You must forgive me if I do not accept. You may see darkness ahead for me...but my mistakes are in the past, not the future. My ambition is solely to shine light and justice upon the world's impurities, and this tournament is merely a show of that unrelenting force." Failures? She'd correct them. Darkness? She'd attack it. The way? She knew it.

"Become mine, Okada! The desert may be my home...But with someone with your tenacity and cunning, you could be my eyes into the lands beyond. Your finest days need not be in the past if you would only become part of something greater." She offered. As someone who had witnessed and been at the absolute bottom of depravity, only to rise above through her strength, Azusa was a strong supporter of "Might makes Right". And between Kaji's deft movements, clever tactics and unyielding spirit, the Cloud nin had caught the better side of her attention.

"...And I cannot say I have had the pleasure of knowing a cloud shinobi on a most personal level." Her tongue brushed across her lips. Perhaps, just perhaps, she may have been abit too harsh on her initial opinion as well. Not that she'd admit it, of course.

Whether in victory or defeat, every bout seemed to end this way. Could Kaji Okada have asked for more of his body than to give his absolute best on the battlefield? There was doubt in Kaji that he had done his best, but there was no sadness when he felt his strength sapping and his legs giving way. His knees made dents in the red soil of the arena floor as he recognized himself dropping onto it, struggling to not keel over. Rather than falling face-first he planted the blade edge of his saber and leaned against the hilt with his hand gripping it tightly. He clung to his dignity then, even though being brought to his knees was just what his foe ached to bring to fruition.

With utter clarity, Kaji recalled the final seconds which led him to this place— to Azusa’s counter offer and overjoyed banter in lieu of her success. It was a final clash— a tour de force in the quickly fading mist of Kaji’s deceitful jutsu. The pair dueled in close combat where Kaji’s clones were battered and faded into plumes of seething steam, but that failed to slow Azusa’s assault. She caught him squarely with good timing and another blow on top of where she crushed his ribs with the last sinful fist. This strike was the last his breast cage could handle and the force shook him to the core. His heart skipped a beat and he fell, grasping for strength against his masterwork saber, Eelspine. Now he was kneeling at her feet and scraping for strength, unsure if keeling over would have been the better option.

He looked up to the victor, Azusa, with his emerald eyes still possessing their luster, though they were fainter than before— the visible strength in his stare didn’t wain in the slightest. He was passionate about something, and from what Azusa said to him last, it was clear that she did not know what. Kaji possessed an intensity which spoke through silence; the proverbial look worth a thousand words. But then he broke that silence. “Be yours” he countered with a hint of surprise, “and what about infidelity?” Only moments ago the subject had surfaced, and from it came temptation. When Kaji dared to challenge her run towards victory in the tournament, she countered him, but his nerve had her interest in Kaji peak enough for her to make a bold proposal. She wished to for longer than a single fight allowed. Had Azusa moved on from the disturbance in the crowd so quickly? Did the man known as Ryota mean so little? Kaji dared to laugh, which came at the price of him coughing and regurgitating drops of blood. “Perhaps in another lifetime Lady Aikayume-Toraono, but I am resolved to seeing out something greater with the woman I love... mi palabra es mi garantía.” Kaji would not deny the beauty and strength of Azusa, no. She embodied many fine qualities; rare features and extraordinary elegance for a kunoichi so skilled in the art of battle. In another life, she might have been his perfect opposite and he might have taken the opportunity— drawn to the scorching sands of wind country just like how he chose his life in the Hidden Cloud in this one. But she was not Yuii Kagetsu, who’s love with Kaji was first fostered over a game of darts and pints of lager in a hidden cloud tavern. Kaji blushed, imagining that it was instead Azusa whom he invited to his room that night and laid over the table in drunken lust, spilling half-eaten cake pans and bottles of booze. He imagined that night when their newborn Umeko saw the campfire light, letting out her first cry but with fox ears on her little head. His mind spun as if a twisted illusion was cast... None of it was the same, and none of it was right. There was no replacement for his beloved Blue. With his free hand, Kaji clutched at his broken torso. He declared, “You may have broken through the cage, but my heart is not up for grabs.”

It was then that the crimson scales of Rhokul came, looming over Kaji in a protective posture with his barbed tail sweeping around to protect the fallen guardian. Rhokul was hissing and still enraged, prepared to continue the bout which had clearly come to a close, as their bond was not so fickle either. “Rise guardian, and we shall finish this,” said the scaled titan with his ferocity still peaked, prepared to battle to the death.
“Not this time, my friend” answered Kaji. “This battle is done… I’m sorry.” And then a signal of fanfare filled the arena, blaring trumpets of victory and cheers of the wild crowd. Rhokul almost spun about, shaken by the thunder of the countless spectators, though it was something else that caused the barbs on his tail to bristle. Kaji’s comrades were expected to come to his aid, but not the two who made their way towards him first. With a growl, Rhokul asked, “Are you sure, Guardian?”
Kaji was grimacing from the pain as he set his sight on the approaching strangers, first noticing the emblem of the Hidden Stone… He had seen those two shinobi before.
“Not as sure as I was a moment ago” answered Kaji.
