He is a reasonable height, standing at 6', and is very toned due to his work and training as a shinobi. Having taken on the physical appearance of the shinobi previously known as Junan he also imitates the mans expressions, and he had been a very expressive personality. (See avatar)
Character's Mental Description: Junan has gone from a broken child, grieving for his father watching his mother break under her grief, to his mother’s experiment and finally been moulded into who he is by an organisation bent on doing nothing but making money and willing to do anything to do so. As he is now is not how he used to be, but it is unfortunately what will continue to be. Junan is proud and egotistical, through his mother’s experiments and his own late blooming as a shinobi he believes that he is all powerful and has nothing to fear, not even death. Due to his time spent with the organisation and those he directly reports to he believes that this is the way of the world, that the weak are taken advantage of, and the strong can either break trying to protect them, or gain power by taking advantage of them. His desire to make his mother’s wish come true, along with the prompting by those he now views as his family, has meant that he will use others to attain anything he desires, and the only thing keeping him from doing so outwardly is that the organisation he works for requires him to.

Key Note:</I><I> I will refer to the character as Junan as this is the name he has taken as his own and is the name of the body he inhabits permanently now. He no longer thinks of himself by his previous name and is simply is the shinobi Junan.
Born in Cloud to a mednin mother and a father who served as a Chuunin, Junan wasn’t meant to be anything special. His mother served under Karubin, and continued to work on his experiments long into his retirement from active duty, though it was always suspected that the man never really left the hospital anyway.
His father was a humble man, one who did his duty and didn’t ask for anything more. At the age of 8, on Junan’s first day of the academy, a report came in that his father had died during a mission. It was a hard start to his life as a shinobi, a realisation of mortality.
For the following month his mother grieved, Junan looking after himself eating burned toast for breakfast and dinner while she wept. A month after that she seemed to go delirious, spouting rubbish to her son about how she would never let him die, how she would put him out of deaths reach. It scared Junan.
At the academy he was distracted. Failing grades across the board. Yet despite the attempts of his tutors he couldn’t seem to get to grips with techniques.
By the time he reached age 12, the eldest a student could be, he had failed 8 Genin exams, his mother had almost disappeared from his life, and his health had deteriorated significantly. The other students who remembered the trauma that he had gone through and cared enough to find out how things were at his home had all left over the course of the years. As time went on they were forgotten in his mind, the memory of being teased for his inability to perform the most basic jutsu instead replaced.
Pity had been replaced by indifference, in some cases genuine cruelty as younger shinobi wannabes would roleplay their being the hero, and his being the villain. His role was never willing, instead he would be beaten up, mutilated, and attacked daily as the thief, the robber, the missing nin, the murderer. The teachers would intervene and end it, for they remembered, but even they wondered why he still tried.
At home he would patch his wounds, and he would despair.
Being released from the academy was almost a relief for him, but then a couple of nights later a figure was invited home by his mother, who he hadn’t seen in a week either. The man was Isaki Kushin, the Sennin of the medical branch, a shinobi recognised by all for his raw power, but also highly regarded for his intellect. The man seemed to study Junan, yet that was all Junan remembered before he woke up.

Kushin had been invited to this medical practitioner’s house. She was one of the many medical shinobi who had thrived under Kushin’s practices, his ability to manipulate the laws and those who governed them. Yet he’d been unaware of her presence, and he’d been unaware of her studies until after he’d found himself in Karubin’s branch speaking the man himself about his advances.
While there he’d seen the woman in the background, running tests in the dark, her face was gaunt, she was clearly unwell, and his gaze had been spotted by Karubin himself. Kogan was with them both as well, three Sennin in one place, and so Kushin asked who she was. He was told the story of her grief, how she wanted to make her son immortal, how he was failing at the academy and how her husband’s death had seemed to place both their lives along this path.
Pity wasn’t in Kushin’s available emotions, this was instead replaced at this moment with curiosity. Immortality was always a concept he’d enjoyed, and anyone who strove for it was worth his attention. After his work with Karubin and Kogan ended he went to speak with this woman, and after listening to her tale he had a suggestion to make. Turn her son into a puppet. At first she was horrified at the idea, but he made suggestions on how to modify it slightly. He’d been told that her son was failing, so use Karubin and Shin’s research into the abilities of chakra memory to enable the casing to give the boy what he doesn’t currently have, ability.
He sold it to her on the idea that it would allow the boy to live forever of course. She grudgingly accepted, and so took him to her home.
At her house Kushin cast a genjutsu on the boy, and then took him back to his laboratory. Working on the boy Kushin used his bloodline to keep the organs alive and fresh while a member of his Sento Henken skinned the boy and begun the preparations to create the puppet container that would be the boys first housing. Placing his vital organs within a small container filled with Karubin’s liquid chakra they set to work on making them able to survive purely on chakra, having it take the place of the other elements that the body would normally require to survive. Once that container was filled and properly prepared he sealed it with the appropriate seals and set it to one side.
He was however doing so much more than he would normally do with one of these. Normally this would be mostly the end of the work, but in this case he was wanting to create something out of nothing. Kushin usually devalued life which he thought was worthless, someone with no talent, no ability to get past a tragedy held no interest for him. In this case however he was making an exception, and part of that was because he had another personal experiment with which to attempt.
He’d then place the container inside a specially designed puppet that would allow the boys new chakra to flow and gain control over his new mechanical limbs, that was the normal part. This was different because the boy’s mother had effectively allowed Kushin to do as he wanted to make the boy immortal. So Kushin would make the boy valuable in his own mind.
So it was that one of Kushin’s final experiments before he would go into study, like so many medical shinobi before him, would take place.
Working closely with Kogan he took all of his jutsu knowledge, all of Kogan’s jutsu knowledge, and transferred them into canisters a quarter the size of the one which the boys life was harboured in. The knowledge was stored within liquid chakra itself, manipulated to harbour memories much like an artificial brain. Yet like an artificial brain accessing that knowledge would take time, require prompting.
Kushin then gave the contact details for the puppet master who helped form the body to the boys mother, and then left to get back to what he was otherwise doing.

First there was nothing. Darkness, emptiness, timelessness.
Panic filled him when he couldn’t breathe, he felt like he was suffocating, dying.
Consciousness fled him once more.
When it returned there was still nothing, he still couldn’t breathe, but then, if he’d been unable to breath, then why wasn’t he dead? Or perhaps he was. Perhaps this was his hell, but then why couldn’t he see anything.
He tried to reach out, tried to scream, nothing, no sound, no touch.
An infinite amount of time passed in his mind, able to operate without the restrictions of the human anatomy, without the restrictions of our understanding of time, for time no longer existed for the boy, certainly not in this state.
Slowly but surely he was being driven insane, trying to get something, anything, some kind of feedback, he screamed, he hated, memories driving him mad. Those kids who used to torment him now tormented him in his mind for an eternity. He couldn’t flee from them, he couldn’t feel their kicks, he couldn’t feel their kunai, but that didn’t stop them. He was the training doll, he was their toy, he was a plaything.
He swore if he ever got out of this place he would make them pay, somehow, someway, he would do it… pure rage ran from his mind, the desire to take hold of one of their throats… to squeeze… then he felt something.
Movement. Was it his fingers? He had fingers again? They could move?
His hatred, yes that was what had achieved it, so he hated more and he felt the movement again. It felt unusual, but slowly he began to understand how it worked, he began to figure out how to move. He took hold of the feeling and opened his eyes. They didn’t feel like how he remembered eyes feeling, a most unusual thing to feel, yet they felt foreign, not quite right. He could see the ceiling, his room, he recognised it, his eyes moved like eyes moved, they saw like eyes saw, but something was wrong. It was such an effort to simply move, even to move his eyes in his sockets, why was it so hard?
At least now he could see the light coming in from outside, at least now he had some way of tracking time.
Days passed as he could now develop quicker, though perhaps at the same speed, he didn’t know, still with there being time he felt like it was quicker, something to track his progress against, and yet slower as he could now feel the time pass.
He learned to stand, he looked at his hands and they looked like his hands, but they felt like they weren’t. Months passed and he was running, he was still the pre-teen boy, but he now understood what had been done, his mother had left him a note under where she had hung herself in their house. It had simply taken him that long to get the sense of smell to be able to understand that she had been dead for some time.
Leaving the house he stumbled into the streets and searched for the puppet master she had mentioned in her note. She said they had built his body for him and that he should seek his teachings. When he found the master he was well received, and was taught in the ways of a puppet master, and he learned from their training. They taught him how to use his body properly, how to create more bodies like his own, how to keep aspects of peoples bloodlines or special traits. It was a dark art, one which only a disciple of Kushin would know as well as this puppet master knew. The master himself being under direct orders of Kushin, and although none had seen Kushin for some time, none who knew him still dared oppose his orders.
Yet this isn’t where the story of this boy ends. For it was while he was practicing that the announcement that the gates were to be closed, that trade would be limited and that foreigners would no longer be allowed into the village. Limited resources was of particular interest among the puppet creators, but unfortunately it wasn’t with them that this would affect Junan the most, but rather because of his association with them instead.
It was during the early months of the lockdown that things were at their worst, as people panicked, resources were scarce and those without would steal from those with. Shinobi were hired by those with to keep those without away, and so it went on. The puppet masters were a group who were teaching Junan how to unlock the abilities which had been placed within him, they had money and everything they needed, however this attracted the attention of a group of individuals who were slowly gaining strength in the backstreets.
Junan had heard of their existence, like many others, the ANBU were attempting to reassure the populous that they were doing things to try and stop the group, but the people weren’t sure whether they wanted that or not.
The group didn’t have a name, they were referred to commonly as the Kumo Corrupt in the media, but the people sometimes thought of them in more a ‘Robin Hood’ light. They were smuggling goods into the village and making them available for the poor and needy. All the people of Cloud cared about was this, what they didn’t care about was how they were getting these goods in the first instance and so the ANBU found resistance in attempting to locate the group, indeed many who were meant to be investigating turned a blind eye even when they did find something. As a whole they made headway, but it was slow, and often only managed to capture someone of low rank or level among the groups number, nothing which slowed or harmed the work they did, but enough to keep the wealthy elite happy that something was being done.
Junan had been recruited by this group, and so it was that he earned a decent living, or rather had access to materials that he needed as neither food nor water was of any interest to him. Over time he grew to understand the darker side of the business. At first he worked in distribution, giving food out to those who needed it, fleeing from the ANBU, he seemed to know just enough about shinobi training to get away and hide from them when needed. Eventually he gained a reputation among both the ANBU hunting him and the Kumo Corrupt who he worked for. The ANBU wanted him because he was a distributor, and one they’d come in contact with in several raids, but never caught. The Kumo Corrupt took him away from distribution and moved him up the ranks, into the more trusted occupation of resource gathering.
The ANBU didn’t attack these groups, so Junan was safe once more, but he found himself in an awkward situation, one where his morals were tested to the point of breaking. In his new role he worked with active shinobi, they would rob merchants, blackmail or murder them to get whatever it was that they were sent to get. As a previous distributor he knew where these goods went, he could remember the faces of those who received them, the need for the goods. This is what kept him motivated. For months he worked in this area, till he’d begun to forget the benefits at the end of the chain, he’d been forced to find some enjoyment in the work, and so it was that he began to enjoy tormenting the rich and wealthy for their goods.
So it went on for the remainder of Shin’s rein as Raikage. Upon his death the Kumo Corrupt’s hold on the people was shaken, except then it grew stronger. The new Raikage was born in a village filled with fear. A missing nin had killed the Raikage (or so they thought) and so the gates must remain shut! After an impressive speech, nothing more was really heard from this Raikage. Business had gone on as usual for the short period of her time in leadership, before the Kumo Corrupt’s worst nightmare happened.
Saito Akira became Raikage. Simply by being who he was he seemed to bring a level of confidence back to the village. The gates opened, resources flooded in. He spoke of strength, he spoke of Kumogakure as infallible, he destroyed the foundations on which the Kumo Corrupt existed.
Yet the organisation that was had dozens of people working for it, people who had done all kinds of illegal activity to get by, to help Kumogakure through the hard times. People who in this new age would be imprisoned, who the ANBU wouldn’t turn a blind eye to.
The new ANBU Sennin instigated raids on dozens of their hideouts, taking out several key members and putting pressure on the Kumo Corrupt, almost to the point of shattering it entirely. But their leader remained, and under his iron fist so too did they all. Junan survived, he was adept at surviving by this point. His skills as a shinobi had grown over the time, and so when the ANBU made a raid on the building he lived in he found a way to escape.
As things calmed down they reunited, the murderers and thieves that made up their number meeting to decide on what to do next. It was organised crime, but then, it always had been. The boss took the three highest level shinobi in their ranks and gave them each a domain in which they were in charge, kidnappings, drugs, and murder. These were a far cry from the old system.
Junan was now 15 and he’d grown to trust in the organisation he’d been working for the past three years with. He still wasn’t a shinobi but had access to many jutsu now, he’d found himself being taught some of the basics by a couple of the trained shinobi who he worked with, but found himself not only able to replicate the technique, but improve on it. Almost as though he already knew the jutsu, but hadn’t used it for some time.
He worked hard to please and the older members took advantage of this, getting him to perform duties they didn’t want to do, while heaping praise on him when he did well. So when the angle of the organisation changed, and they started to bring in addictive poisons, started to sell slaves to the wealthy in Kumogakure, and enslave the weak and those who wouldn’t be missed in Kumogakure, and murder anyone who was getting in their way, Junan didn’t blink a fake eye.
Junan had been placed in the human trafficking group, just someone working under the female commander. She had become almost a motherly figure for Junan over the past couple of years. She encouraged him to work on a new body for himself, sculpting a new puppet for himself from the dead body of a young academy student to be his new persona. She had had him study the boy in the leadup to the murder, though Junan had initially thought this was simply another kidnapping initially. When they had the child he was told by her to take the boys identity, live with the boys family, attend his studies, and become the boy.
This was how he rejoined the Academy.
After a very short period of time he gained a reputation for two reasons. First was for his skill at learning new techniques. Some trainers would just go through their wealthy of techniques to see whether Junan would pick them up or not, and almost every time he would naturally learn it, for those he didn’t his knowledge in the other jutsu forms would enable him to do so at what would still be viewed as an incredible pace.
The other reason however was due to his attitude. He didn’t behave like an 8 year old should, he argued against the discipline that was trained into the young shinobi-to-be, fought against it, said things that had the teachers question things in their mind. But he never went so far that he was properly investigated, only parent-teacher meetings and the like, and everyone wanted to believe he was who he said he was.
He graduated as a Genin within the year, yet here he stopped caring about the natural progression of shinobi. He began to understand his position in the pecking order, and so he began to understand his limits. Unfortunately at the real age of 16 he was feeling immortal, and in a very real sense he was one. Out on a mission with two other Genin and a Chuunin team leader he killed them all. His boss from the organisation received his call a week later, and found him now walking around in an 18 year old’s body. At first she was amused, until he began to act more and more like an arrogant teenager, one whose limitations with regards to his valuing the human life were thrown into the wind.
She felt goosebumps run up her skin at his touch, as he looked at her with lifeless eyes, yet she knew what he wanted. Standing her ground she put him in his place verbally, and his memory of what she was capable of compared to what he used to be capable of stayed his hand. And so he was kept under thumb, but for how long…
He returned to working for the organisation, but also hunted Cloud for a shinobi who would fit his image. Someone who looked the way he wanted to look, and acted in a way that he could act.
The organisation continued its work and he continued to serve. They were all well aware of the shaking walls surrounding him as he developed, as he accomplished every task he was set with ease. The fountain of praise for his efforts ended, instead replaced with a hesitant appreciation, and silent fear. Yet he hadn’t yet tested his boundaries within their rules and restrictions. They had him watched, and every time it looked like he was about to act without their orders, doing something which might have the organisation placed under the microscope of the ANBU he was contacted, something or someone would happen to bump into him, call him, something, anything, a simple reminder of his restrictions.
Yet he worked tirelessly. His body required no sustenance, he never slept, the canisters that Kushin had designed and installed having a positive side effect of being able to store further information, much like additional brains. They couldn’t think per se, but they relieved the stress that being permanently alert would otherwise have had on the brain.
During the day he worked as several well-respected shinobi, his mission rate was among those of the best in the village, but split between the different bodies that he would use it never made him seem like anything other than average. Those on his team received his protection. He held himself with a commanding confidence, one which would initially grate on those he met. Usually however, during the tough moments of a mission, he would pull through, save those around him, do the impossible. Often it would be enough for those who judged him negatively to change their mind.
During the night however he would take orders from the organisation, work the streets to find whatever it was that was being looked for, stalk the target, and then subdue it. Shinobi or civilian it didn’t matter to him. He simply would take them down and ship them off for whoever had paid the right price for whatever it was that they wanted.
Finally however he found himself the body of the man he wanted. It was a Chuunin in Cloud named Junan, the name which he would take for his own. He studied the man for months, copied his movements, practiced his speech patterns, mimicked him in every way he could. A year passed, he learned the names of all his friends, he learned their faces, the way he interacted with them, his family.
When he finally confronted the man, the combat was short and quiet, death as he slept, a sliced throat and a blade into the brain. Nothing would be felt by him, it was unusually merciful. Perhaps it was due to his feeling some kind of kinship over a man whose life he was about to take as his own, maybe it was as simple as desiring to damage the body as little as possible, a body which he would make his own.
It took him the better part of the day to create the body, to turn the existing corpse into that of a puppet and then re-introduce himself as the host, once more giving it life. There would have been a dramatic intake of breath, but the only use breath was involved its requirement to speak, and so this didn’t take place. Instead a far more ominous ease sitting up, a raised hand testing the dexterity of his work as the fingers moved, and then a vicious smile crept over his face as his plan had gone without a hitch.
Aged eighteen he was sleeping with the woman who was his boss. He believed he had seduced her, the truth was however that she slept with him out of fear. It hadn’t been immediate, and it hadn’t been obvious at first, but her family slowly one by one began to die or suffer sever traumatic experiences every time she denied his advances. It was the only link, and although at first she didn’t believe it and never witnessed or found evidence of it being him, it stopped after she said yes.
Two more years passed, and the power of this group ebbed and flowed. ANBU would make arrests of key members and the group would suffer losses and reduction in productivity from that area for a time. The replacement would be more hesitant, learn from the mistakes made, and slowly be guided to bring productivity back up to the desired level again. This would repeat, sometimes with many others being captured, sometimes with someone not as important, every time they would recover.
It was Akira Saito in his position as Raikage that recognised the repeated nature in the crimes as he read the reports and pieced together the puzzle in his mind. A report had made its way to the mission desk signed by the previous Raikage himself instructing them on who and what to target and when. The destruction of the organisation had been put into play, and the man who had orchestrated it wouldn’t even be in a position to watch.

Character's Physical Description: Currently Junan looks like a young man with short spiked blonde hair and is usually seen wearing shaded glasses, hiding his light grey/blue eyes. He is a reasonable height, standing at 6', and is very toned due to his work and training as a shinobi. Having taken on the physical appearance of the shinobi previously known as Junan he also imitates the mans expressions, and he had been a very expressive personality. (See avatar)
Character's Mental Description: Junan has gone from a broken child, grieving for his father watching his mother break under her grief, to his mother’s experiment and finally been moulded into who he is by an organisation bent on doing nothing but making money and willing to do anything to do so. As he is now is not how he used to be, but it is unfortunately what will continue to be. Junan is proud and egotistical, through his mother’s experiments and his own late blooming as a shinobi he believes that he is all powerful and has nothing to fear, not even death. Due to his time spent with the organisation and those he directly reports to he believes that this is the way of the world, that the weak are taken advantage of, and the strong can either break trying to protect them, or gain power by taking advantage of them. His desire to make his mother’s wish come true, along with the prompting by those he now views as his family, has meant that he will use others to attain anything he desires, and the only thing keeping him from doing so outwardly is that the organisation he works for requires him to.

Character History:
Key Note:</I><I> I will refer to the character as Junan as this is the name he has taken as his own and is the name of the body he inhabits permanently now. He no longer thinks of himself by his previous name and is simply is the shinobi Junan.
Born in Cloud to a mednin mother and a father who served as a Chuunin, Junan wasn’t meant to be anything special. His mother served under Karubin, and continued to work on his experiments long into his retirement from active duty, though it was always suspected that the man never really left the hospital anyway.
His father was a humble man, one who did his duty and didn’t ask for anything more. At the age of 8, on Junan’s first day of the academy, a report came in that his father had died during a mission. It was a hard start to his life as a shinobi, a realisation of mortality.
For the following month his mother grieved, Junan looking after himself eating burned toast for breakfast and dinner while she wept. A month after that she seemed to go delirious, spouting rubbish to her son about how she would never let him die, how she would put him out of deaths reach. It scared Junan.
At the academy he was distracted. Failing grades across the board. Yet despite the attempts of his tutors he couldn’t seem to get to grips with techniques.
By the time he reached age 12, the eldest a student could be, he had failed 8 Genin exams, his mother had almost disappeared from his life, and his health had deteriorated significantly. The other students who remembered the trauma that he had gone through and cared enough to find out how things were at his home had all left over the course of the years. As time went on they were forgotten in his mind, the memory of being teased for his inability to perform the most basic jutsu instead replaced.
Pity had been replaced by indifference, in some cases genuine cruelty as younger shinobi wannabes would roleplay their being the hero, and his being the villain. His role was never willing, instead he would be beaten up, mutilated, and attacked daily as the thief, the robber, the missing nin, the murderer. The teachers would intervene and end it, for they remembered, but even they wondered why he still tried.
At home he would patch his wounds, and he would despair.
Being released from the academy was almost a relief for him, but then a couple of nights later a figure was invited home by his mother, who he hadn’t seen in a week either. The man was Isaki Kushin, the Sennin of the medical branch, a shinobi recognised by all for his raw power, but also highly regarded for his intellect. The man seemed to study Junan, yet that was all Junan remembered before he woke up.

Kushin had been invited to this medical practitioner’s house. She was one of the many medical shinobi who had thrived under Kushin’s practices, his ability to manipulate the laws and those who governed them. Yet he’d been unaware of her presence, and he’d been unaware of her studies until after he’d found himself in Karubin’s branch speaking the man himself about his advances.
While there he’d seen the woman in the background, running tests in the dark, her face was gaunt, she was clearly unwell, and his gaze had been spotted by Karubin himself. Kogan was with them both as well, three Sennin in one place, and so Kushin asked who she was. He was told the story of her grief, how she wanted to make her son immortal, how he was failing at the academy and how her husband’s death had seemed to place both their lives along this path.
Pity wasn’t in Kushin’s available emotions, this was instead replaced at this moment with curiosity. Immortality was always a concept he’d enjoyed, and anyone who strove for it was worth his attention. After his work with Karubin and Kogan ended he went to speak with this woman, and after listening to her tale he had a suggestion to make. Turn her son into a puppet. At first she was horrified at the idea, but he made suggestions on how to modify it slightly. He’d been told that her son was failing, so use Karubin and Shin’s research into the abilities of chakra memory to enable the casing to give the boy what he doesn’t currently have, ability.
He sold it to her on the idea that it would allow the boy to live forever of course. She grudgingly accepted, and so took him to her home.
At her house Kushin cast a genjutsu on the boy, and then took him back to his laboratory. Working on the boy Kushin used his bloodline to keep the organs alive and fresh while a member of his Sento Henken skinned the boy and begun the preparations to create the puppet container that would be the boys first housing. Placing his vital organs within a small container filled with Karubin’s liquid chakra they set to work on making them able to survive purely on chakra, having it take the place of the other elements that the body would normally require to survive. Once that container was filled and properly prepared he sealed it with the appropriate seals and set it to one side.
He was however doing so much more than he would normally do with one of these. Normally this would be mostly the end of the work, but in this case he was wanting to create something out of nothing. Kushin usually devalued life which he thought was worthless, someone with no talent, no ability to get past a tragedy held no interest for him. In this case however he was making an exception, and part of that was because he had another personal experiment with which to attempt.
He’d then place the container inside a specially designed puppet that would allow the boys new chakra to flow and gain control over his new mechanical limbs, that was the normal part. This was different because the boy’s mother had effectively allowed Kushin to do as he wanted to make the boy immortal. So Kushin would make the boy valuable in his own mind.
So it was that one of Kushin’s final experiments before he would go into study, like so many medical shinobi before him, would take place.
Working closely with Kogan he took all of his jutsu knowledge, all of Kogan’s jutsu knowledge, and transferred them into canisters a quarter the size of the one which the boys life was harboured in. The knowledge was stored within liquid chakra itself, manipulated to harbour memories much like an artificial brain. Yet like an artificial brain accessing that knowledge would take time, require prompting.
Kushin then gave the contact details for the puppet master who helped form the body to the boys mother, and then left to get back to what he was otherwise doing.

First there was nothing. Darkness, emptiness, timelessness.
Panic filled him when he couldn’t breathe, he felt like he was suffocating, dying.
Consciousness fled him once more.
When it returned there was still nothing, he still couldn’t breathe, but then, if he’d been unable to breath, then why wasn’t he dead? Or perhaps he was. Perhaps this was his hell, but then why couldn’t he see anything.
He tried to reach out, tried to scream, nothing, no sound, no touch.
An infinite amount of time passed in his mind, able to operate without the restrictions of the human anatomy, without the restrictions of our understanding of time, for time no longer existed for the boy, certainly not in this state.
Slowly but surely he was being driven insane, trying to get something, anything, some kind of feedback, he screamed, he hated, memories driving him mad. Those kids who used to torment him now tormented him in his mind for an eternity. He couldn’t flee from them, he couldn’t feel their kicks, he couldn’t feel their kunai, but that didn’t stop them. He was the training doll, he was their toy, he was a plaything.
He swore if he ever got out of this place he would make them pay, somehow, someway, he would do it… pure rage ran from his mind, the desire to take hold of one of their throats… to squeeze… then he felt something.
Movement. Was it his fingers? He had fingers again? They could move?
His hatred, yes that was what had achieved it, so he hated more and he felt the movement again. It felt unusual, but slowly he began to understand how it worked, he began to figure out how to move. He took hold of the feeling and opened his eyes. They didn’t feel like how he remembered eyes feeling, a most unusual thing to feel, yet they felt foreign, not quite right. He could see the ceiling, his room, he recognised it, his eyes moved like eyes moved, they saw like eyes saw, but something was wrong. It was such an effort to simply move, even to move his eyes in his sockets, why was it so hard?
At least now he could see the light coming in from outside, at least now he had some way of tracking time.
Days passed as he could now develop quicker, though perhaps at the same speed, he didn’t know, still with there being time he felt like it was quicker, something to track his progress against, and yet slower as he could now feel the time pass.
He learned to stand, he looked at his hands and they looked like his hands, but they felt like they weren’t. Months passed and he was running, he was still the pre-teen boy, but he now understood what had been done, his mother had left him a note under where she had hung herself in their house. It had simply taken him that long to get the sense of smell to be able to understand that she had been dead for some time.
Leaving the house he stumbled into the streets and searched for the puppet master she had mentioned in her note. She said they had built his body for him and that he should seek his teachings. When he found the master he was well received, and was taught in the ways of a puppet master, and he learned from their training. They taught him how to use his body properly, how to create more bodies like his own, how to keep aspects of peoples bloodlines or special traits. It was a dark art, one which only a disciple of Kushin would know as well as this puppet master knew. The master himself being under direct orders of Kushin, and although none had seen Kushin for some time, none who knew him still dared oppose his orders.
Yet this isn’t where the story of this boy ends. For it was while he was practicing that the announcement that the gates were to be closed, that trade would be limited and that foreigners would no longer be allowed into the village. Limited resources was of particular interest among the puppet creators, but unfortunately it wasn’t with them that this would affect Junan the most, but rather because of his association with them instead.
It was during the early months of the lockdown that things were at their worst, as people panicked, resources were scarce and those without would steal from those with. Shinobi were hired by those with to keep those without away, and so it went on. The puppet masters were a group who were teaching Junan how to unlock the abilities which had been placed within him, they had money and everything they needed, however this attracted the attention of a group of individuals who were slowly gaining strength in the backstreets.
Junan had heard of their existence, like many others, the ANBU were attempting to reassure the populous that they were doing things to try and stop the group, but the people weren’t sure whether they wanted that or not.
The group didn’t have a name, they were referred to commonly as the Kumo Corrupt in the media, but the people sometimes thought of them in more a ‘Robin Hood’ light. They were smuggling goods into the village and making them available for the poor and needy. All the people of Cloud cared about was this, what they didn’t care about was how they were getting these goods in the first instance and so the ANBU found resistance in attempting to locate the group, indeed many who were meant to be investigating turned a blind eye even when they did find something. As a whole they made headway, but it was slow, and often only managed to capture someone of low rank or level among the groups number, nothing which slowed or harmed the work they did, but enough to keep the wealthy elite happy that something was being done.
Junan had been recruited by this group, and so it was that he earned a decent living, or rather had access to materials that he needed as neither food nor water was of any interest to him. Over time he grew to understand the darker side of the business. At first he worked in distribution, giving food out to those who needed it, fleeing from the ANBU, he seemed to know just enough about shinobi training to get away and hide from them when needed. Eventually he gained a reputation among both the ANBU hunting him and the Kumo Corrupt who he worked for. The ANBU wanted him because he was a distributor, and one they’d come in contact with in several raids, but never caught. The Kumo Corrupt took him away from distribution and moved him up the ranks, into the more trusted occupation of resource gathering.
The ANBU didn’t attack these groups, so Junan was safe once more, but he found himself in an awkward situation, one where his morals were tested to the point of breaking. In his new role he worked with active shinobi, they would rob merchants, blackmail or murder them to get whatever it was that they were sent to get. As a previous distributor he knew where these goods went, he could remember the faces of those who received them, the need for the goods. This is what kept him motivated. For months he worked in this area, till he’d begun to forget the benefits at the end of the chain, he’d been forced to find some enjoyment in the work, and so it was that he began to enjoy tormenting the rich and wealthy for their goods.
So it went on for the remainder of Shin’s rein as Raikage. Upon his death the Kumo Corrupt’s hold on the people was shaken, except then it grew stronger. The new Raikage was born in a village filled with fear. A missing nin had killed the Raikage (or so they thought) and so the gates must remain shut! After an impressive speech, nothing more was really heard from this Raikage. Business had gone on as usual for the short period of her time in leadership, before the Kumo Corrupt’s worst nightmare happened.
Saito Akira became Raikage. Simply by being who he was he seemed to bring a level of confidence back to the village. The gates opened, resources flooded in. He spoke of strength, he spoke of Kumogakure as infallible, he destroyed the foundations on which the Kumo Corrupt existed.
Yet the organisation that was had dozens of people working for it, people who had done all kinds of illegal activity to get by, to help Kumogakure through the hard times. People who in this new age would be imprisoned, who the ANBU wouldn’t turn a blind eye to.
The new ANBU Sennin instigated raids on dozens of their hideouts, taking out several key members and putting pressure on the Kumo Corrupt, almost to the point of shattering it entirely. But their leader remained, and under his iron fist so too did they all. Junan survived, he was adept at surviving by this point. His skills as a shinobi had grown over the time, and so when the ANBU made a raid on the building he lived in he found a way to escape.
As things calmed down they reunited, the murderers and thieves that made up their number meeting to decide on what to do next. It was organised crime, but then, it always had been. The boss took the three highest level shinobi in their ranks and gave them each a domain in which they were in charge, kidnappings, drugs, and murder. These were a far cry from the old system.
Junan was now 15 and he’d grown to trust in the organisation he’d been working for the past three years with. He still wasn’t a shinobi but had access to many jutsu now, he’d found himself being taught some of the basics by a couple of the trained shinobi who he worked with, but found himself not only able to replicate the technique, but improve on it. Almost as though he already knew the jutsu, but hadn’t used it for some time.
He worked hard to please and the older members took advantage of this, getting him to perform duties they didn’t want to do, while heaping praise on him when he did well. So when the angle of the organisation changed, and they started to bring in addictive poisons, started to sell slaves to the wealthy in Kumogakure, and enslave the weak and those who wouldn’t be missed in Kumogakure, and murder anyone who was getting in their way, Junan didn’t blink a fake eye.
Junan had been placed in the human trafficking group, just someone working under the female commander. She had become almost a motherly figure for Junan over the past couple of years. She encouraged him to work on a new body for himself, sculpting a new puppet for himself from the dead body of a young academy student to be his new persona. She had had him study the boy in the leadup to the murder, though Junan had initially thought this was simply another kidnapping initially. When they had the child he was told by her to take the boys identity, live with the boys family, attend his studies, and become the boy.
This was how he rejoined the Academy.
After a very short period of time he gained a reputation for two reasons. First was for his skill at learning new techniques. Some trainers would just go through their wealthy of techniques to see whether Junan would pick them up or not, and almost every time he would naturally learn it, for those he didn’t his knowledge in the other jutsu forms would enable him to do so at what would still be viewed as an incredible pace.
The other reason however was due to his attitude. He didn’t behave like an 8 year old should, he argued against the discipline that was trained into the young shinobi-to-be, fought against it, said things that had the teachers question things in their mind. But he never went so far that he was properly investigated, only parent-teacher meetings and the like, and everyone wanted to believe he was who he said he was.
He graduated as a Genin within the year, yet here he stopped caring about the natural progression of shinobi. He began to understand his position in the pecking order, and so he began to understand his limits. Unfortunately at the real age of 16 he was feeling immortal, and in a very real sense he was one. Out on a mission with two other Genin and a Chuunin team leader he killed them all. His boss from the organisation received his call a week later, and found him now walking around in an 18 year old’s body. At first she was amused, until he began to act more and more like an arrogant teenager, one whose limitations with regards to his valuing the human life were thrown into the wind.
She felt goosebumps run up her skin at his touch, as he looked at her with lifeless eyes, yet she knew what he wanted. Standing her ground she put him in his place verbally, and his memory of what she was capable of compared to what he used to be capable of stayed his hand. And so he was kept under thumb, but for how long…
He returned to working for the organisation, but also hunted Cloud for a shinobi who would fit his image. Someone who looked the way he wanted to look, and acted in a way that he could act.
The organisation continued its work and he continued to serve. They were all well aware of the shaking walls surrounding him as he developed, as he accomplished every task he was set with ease. The fountain of praise for his efforts ended, instead replaced with a hesitant appreciation, and silent fear. Yet he hadn’t yet tested his boundaries within their rules and restrictions. They had him watched, and every time it looked like he was about to act without their orders, doing something which might have the organisation placed under the microscope of the ANBU he was contacted, something or someone would happen to bump into him, call him, something, anything, a simple reminder of his restrictions.
Yet he worked tirelessly. His body required no sustenance, he never slept, the canisters that Kushin had designed and installed having a positive side effect of being able to store further information, much like additional brains. They couldn’t think per se, but they relieved the stress that being permanently alert would otherwise have had on the brain.
During the day he worked as several well-respected shinobi, his mission rate was among those of the best in the village, but split between the different bodies that he would use it never made him seem like anything other than average. Those on his team received his protection. He held himself with a commanding confidence, one which would initially grate on those he met. Usually however, during the tough moments of a mission, he would pull through, save those around him, do the impossible. Often it would be enough for those who judged him negatively to change their mind.
During the night however he would take orders from the organisation, work the streets to find whatever it was that was being looked for, stalk the target, and then subdue it. Shinobi or civilian it didn’t matter to him. He simply would take them down and ship them off for whoever had paid the right price for whatever it was that they wanted.
Finally however he found himself the body of the man he wanted. It was a Chuunin in Cloud named Junan, the name which he would take for his own. He studied the man for months, copied his movements, practiced his speech patterns, mimicked him in every way he could. A year passed, he learned the names of all his friends, he learned their faces, the way he interacted with them, his family.
When he finally confronted the man, the combat was short and quiet, death as he slept, a sliced throat and a blade into the brain. Nothing would be felt by him, it was unusually merciful. Perhaps it was due to his feeling some kind of kinship over a man whose life he was about to take as his own, maybe it was as simple as desiring to damage the body as little as possible, a body which he would make his own.
It took him the better part of the day to create the body, to turn the existing corpse into that of a puppet and then re-introduce himself as the host, once more giving it life. There would have been a dramatic intake of breath, but the only use breath was involved its requirement to speak, and so this didn’t take place. Instead a far more ominous ease sitting up, a raised hand testing the dexterity of his work as the fingers moved, and then a vicious smile crept over his face as his plan had gone without a hitch.
Aged eighteen he was sleeping with the woman who was his boss. He believed he had seduced her, the truth was however that she slept with him out of fear. It hadn’t been immediate, and it hadn’t been obvious at first, but her family slowly one by one began to die or suffer sever traumatic experiences every time she denied his advances. It was the only link, and although at first she didn’t believe it and never witnessed or found evidence of it being him, it stopped after she said yes.
Two more years passed, and the power of this group ebbed and flowed. ANBU would make arrests of key members and the group would suffer losses and reduction in productivity from that area for a time. The replacement would be more hesitant, learn from the mistakes made, and slowly be guided to bring productivity back up to the desired level again. This would repeat, sometimes with many others being captured, sometimes with someone not as important, every time they would recover.
It was Akira Saito in his position as Raikage that recognised the repeated nature in the crimes as he read the reports and pieced together the puzzle in his mind. A report had made its way to the mission desk signed by the previous Raikage himself instructing them on who and what to target and when. The destruction of the organisation had been put into play, and the man who had orchestrated it wouldn’t even be in a position to watch.
