Akamatsu Daisuke ran up the steps to the big house, only slightly out of breath. Today, he had been sent to teach some 7 year olds, pre-Academy Students, how to throw kunai, so as to get a head start. Of course, the boy had readily accepted, already looking forward to showing off his skills and perhaps inspiring some of the year-younger children to take on a path as a Projectile Taijutsu specialist; the world needed more Taijutsu specialized Shinobi.
He knocked on the door, waiting for an answer as he could already hear the sounds of multiple children running about the home. He was, of course, already prepared: he’d borrowed his father’s gigantic pack, and it contained a few hand-made wooden targets and perhaps hundreds of neatly arranged wooden carved kunai, the tips very rounded and dulled yet each weapon smooth and well-balanced. He’d taken the time to make every one of them, nearly exact copies of his Whistlees, instead of going to the Academy and grabbing the ones someone else had made.
As the door opened and a near middle-aged man - he couldn’t be more than 40 - greeted him and ushered Dai inside, calling out to the three kids who were running about playing Ninja (of course). They all ran to Daisuke, watching the Academy Student eagerly as he greeted them. Hi, I’m Akamatus Daisuke, he said with a polite bow and a smile, listening as each one of them also bowed and introduced themselves. The older man walked all four to the backyard, engaging in small-talk with Daisuke about the Academy.
Okay, so! Daisuke removed his pack and walked to three of the six or seven posts that had been set up, making sure there was space in between each of them. He nailed up the targets, pointing to the bullseye as he spoke to the children. Not many people use kunai nowadays, since they have all their fancy-schmancy Ninjutsu and Genjutsu and Puppet stuff, he continued with a laugh. But, kunai are very valuable tools to a Shinobi. First off, I ask these fancy-schmancy Nin and Gen-jutsu users: What happens if you’re low on Chakra and you can’t waste anymore? Huh?!?! What will you do without kunai or a weapon period, He turned around animatedly, pointing randomly at one of the children, who giggled.
Nuthin’, that’s what! And what if you’re on a stealth mission and have to covertly take down the bad guys, and can’t use all that flair-y jutsu?!? He pointed to another, who also burst out laughing. NUTHIN’, because you don’t know how to use proper Shinobi tools! He pointed to the last child, What if you’re up against someone that can counter all your Ninjutsu like a pro and can easily get past your Genjutsu?!? You can’t do nuthin’ without using smart tactics and… Guess what… KUNAI! He waited until all three of the children had calmed down, a smile splitting each of their faces.
So, I’m here to show you the basics of how to throw a kunai! He beckoned to each of them, urging them closer as he crouched and started pulling out wooden kunai, handing one to each of them at a time. He got up, taking a few for himself. Now, imagine the the target in front of you is a bad guy, and he’s trying to set our village on fire! But, you had just beaten up one of his bad guy friends and are almost out of Chakra! So, you gotta knock him out with only the kunai in your hands.
Daisuke dived forward, throwing his kunai before he landed on the ground and rolled. His kunai hit the target, one hitting the bullseye and the others lining up below and above it. The children cheered, spilling a few of their kunai. Okay, now it’s your turn! Watch. He moved towards where the children were, telling them to move closer. Everyone has their own way to throw kunai. I use the holes, see, right here, he pointed out the holes at the end of the kunai, putting one weapon on each of his fingers. He moved very slowly so they could watch how he threw, standing sideways and drawing the kunai to his chest. He slowly extended his arm and as his arm straightened his hand opened, the kunai dropping to the floor as his fingers stopped curling into the holes.
See, when they drop, if I threw them faster, they would have flown towards the target. He picked them back up, tossing them into the borrowed pack. He lined each child up with a training post, having them put their kunai to the side and wielding only two. Alright, now try to mimic what I had just did. He moved around to each of his “students”, helping them correct anything wrong with their stance. They went through it a few more times, before Daisuke deemed they could try actually throwing it now.
Okay, now actually throw, move your arm as fast as you can, he said as he took two of the three children and pulled them a ways back and then moved to stand near the one that was going to throw. He watched closely, ready to intervene should anything go amiss with his throw. Wouldn’t do if any of them were injured.
The child threw his kunai, the weapon sailing and nearly hitting one of the posts before harmlessly bouncing along the ground. They’d get to the aim later. Daisuke looked at the sky: he’d have to go soon, he’d spent a long time making sure everything was prepared and then showing them the motions. Okay, guys! You two will get one throw really quick then I’ll have to leave, it’s getting dark! The kids groaned, but complied, the remaining two taking their first and final turns for that day before Daisuke gathered all his things. I’ll be back, don’t worry! Next time, you will get more time to actually throw, he said with a smile, which brought a cheer from the kids.
