The wind passed through the empty street completely unhindered. It was just one of those days when everyone was either busy or somewhere else, not bothering to visit the Sky Fall. A single door opened and one single woman came out. She looked along the empty street and let a prolonged sigh out. Maybe her business wasn't doing that good or boredom had started slowly seeping in through the cracks. Who knew... The young woman turned the OPEN sign on her door over and closed the door.
Uka sighed yet again as she turned the key, locking the door behind herself. It was pretty clear that she wasn’t going to sell anything today, therefore maybe she could just go do some of her other work. The medic walked over behind the counter and opened the door there.
The room was full of all sorts of gardening equipment raging from different sizes of pots to small shovels, but there were a few things that seemed out of place, namely a coat hanger with a white laboratory coat on it and a set of stairs behind it. Those stair lead down to the basement of the building, which surprisingly has a set of very heavy-looking metal doors, stopping anyone from getting in or out. It was more or less a safety precaution because of the type of work that went on in there.
As much as Uka enjoyed working with her poisons and their antidotes she realized the dangers they posed if they escaped somehow or someone got their hands on them, so some pre-emptive measures had to be taken, such as these doors. She carefully took her cloak off and hanged it on the opposite site of the lab coat, taking extra precaution for them not to touch. It wasn't as if there was anything on it, but rather a bit of OCD, which bugged her. Her brown gloves quickly followed it and finally the young medic put the white coat on, carefully buttoning it up. She took a set of clear glasses out of one of the pockets and put them on before heading down the stairs. At the bottom there was only two things – the doors and a small table with a box of latex gloves.
The room behind the doors was quite different from her small flower shop upstairs or even her storage closet. Sure there were quite a few flowers lining the walls on one side, but they were very unsafe to sell as they all had some poisonous aspect to them, even though none actually released toxins into the air. It was a matter of personal preference since Uka hated having to deal with them in a place such as her basement. On the opposite side there was a table with about six cages with white mice in them. In the bottom left corner of the room there was a round metal hatch, which lead to a secondary basement, where the florist kept different types of fungi for medical uses. In the opposite corner there was a rather large metal cabinet, filled with all sorts of glass bottles, whether they be filled or not, and all sorts of other large or small apparatus. Right next to it there was a small desk with a rather large lamp on it. However there was one thing that seemed completely out of place – a bag of charcoal in the middle of the room.
Uka slowly walked over to the cages and made sure that all the mice had food and water. She really hated having to keep them locked up like that, but they were beyond necessary for her work. As much as she hated it they were her only way to test whether or not her work was in fact fruitful or not, that is without counting herself. However she did need to consider saving up for a newer house as her current one couldn’t really provide room for everything that she needed. Sure her small white friends could help her test whether or not a toxic worked, but right now the only real way or producing the antivenom/antiserums was using herself. It was a very simple thing to do, considering how many times she had done it, but it was always just as risky as the first time. If she could get a few sheep or cows it would make her work just so much easier than it was, but on the bright side she has gained quite the immunity due to it all.
As much as having those animals to help she still had to consider the possibility of serum sickness, which wasn’t exactly something that would help during a mission. It would completely hinder the activity of the shinobi experiencing it and for now Uka was nowhere near finding a way to prevent it, however there was already a way to stop it. As much as she hated using herself as a test dummy for all her work it was the only real way she had from making sure the antiserums she made were in fact safe for use during such an environment. If it was to be used under normal medical conditions in a hospital or at home then an animal produced antiserum would work fine as any reaction wouldn’t really cause any permanent harm.
As soon as the mice were fed most of the house keeping work was done and it was time to get to the real topic of her day. Her eyes dropped to the bag of charcoal in the middle of the room, but she left it there for now. It was something her mother had taught her a while ago, but much to her regret Uka didn’t actually have the ability to produce what she needed from that charcoal. If properly treated it worked quite well for some ingested poisons, but to make it she needed very strong fire techniques, which her father specialised in, but she herself had no talent at. This meant she had to put a request up for some help later on. That however wasn’t what she had to do right now.
A while ago she had started working on a new serum, which involved injecting herself with small quantities of the poison over a few days, allowing for her body to create defences against the toxin, which could be used to help others. This specific serum wasn’t something she was going use on a daily basis, considering the actual poison was very hard to make and very few people actually even know of its existence, but one could never be too prepared. She quickly walked over to the cabinet and unlocked the small lock which was holding its doors closed. The medic took out a cannula, an empty blood pack and some cotton balls, they weren’t the best however she had ran out from everything else. ’I need to stock up again later’ She thought as she put all the supplies on the desk and locked the cabinet up once again. Uka pulled the chair out from underneath the desk and sat down. She quickly rolled her sleeve up and prepared the cannula, carefully finding a vein she could use in the antecubital space. A slight chuckle escaped her when she finally found a usable one and secured the cannula onto her arm.
Her line of experimentation involved her injecting herself with different sorts of toxins and then using her own blood to create the antiserums, but to someone who didn’t know what she did it would look as if she was a drug addict. It was also one of the main reasons she only worse long-sleeved shirts, but hey it was just a risk of her profession. The medic then removed the cap on the cannula and attached the empty blood bag to the opening. Even if this was the easiest part of her work she hated it the most. The feeling of lightheadedness wasn’t something the young woman enjoyed at all, but there wasn’t really any other way to do her job. It was just a matter of taking enough blood to prepare an antiserum, but not enough to put herself at risk. A rather careful balance that took so many attempts to master.
This was the fastest part of the procedure and soon it was all over. Uka carefully sealed the blood bag and then removed the cannula, pressing one of the cotton balls onto the small hole left behind on her arm. These were the moments she dreaded most. Those few minutes where she could do nothing but just sit there and wait. They were not so painful because of what they were, but rather because of the memories they brought up, memories of times she didn’t want to ever have to remember. Even though it had been so long the pain in the scar on her left breast always came back to remind her it still existed, force her to remember it and how she had got it. A sigh escaped her lips yet again as tried to move her thoughts in a different direction as fruitless as that always turned out to be.
Soon she was able to walk once more and she quickly jumped to her feet. It was now a matter of preparing the actual serum, but first some rest was needed. Uka opened the bottom part of the metal cabinet and carefully placed the bag onto one of the hooks there. It was a special freezer designed to store blood and that is precisely why she could afford to stop here for now. The medic then carefully disposed of all the supplies she had used and put the ones she hadn’t back into the cabinet. All that was left now was to go and get a nice warm hot chocolate until it was time to get back to work…
