This was the day. Satsuki would ask her teacher for a class report. Most students especially of her age abhors these things, but not her, no siree. She wanted to make a better impression of herself. She wanted to project that she is beyond everything her mother's doing. Besides, the sin of the mother isn't really the sin of the child right? Nope. Prejudice would come raining on your parade. Satsuki marched up to her teacher after class and asked for a report but her teacher just said 'no'. When she asked why, her teacher brushed her off and instead, gave her another out-of-campus activity. The go-to-the-embassy-and-get-some-outside-experience activity. Funny, she just came back two days ago from crushing a raccoon's snout with a mousetrap, threw a homemade (and unstable) kunai at another, potentially mortally wounding it, and snare a deer with a bear trap. Fun ain't it? The only good thing that came out of all of this animal abuse is the fact that her grandmother actually knew how to make good food out of venison.
"I'm going to make a deal with you, Kanzaki-san. If you manage to successfully record three Academy-level missions, I'll assign you a class report." explained the oddly nerdy teacher.
"The first one counts right? It should count." replied the girl.
Her teacher just nodded and brushed her away and motioned for her to get going.
She got to the Embassy faster this time. And lo and behold, there wasn't a line! Maybe people are on vacation or something, or so the girl thought. She went up to the familiar sight of the window and just as she was about to speak the old woman squealed in delight,
"Oh my goodness! The baby doll is back!" blushed the woman.
"Baby doll? Really? Is she having one of those midlife things? Maybe she doesn't have kids. Should I ask her if she has kids? Nah, she's nice even if she's weird." the girl said to herself.
"Here for another student mission pumpkin? I got the perfect one for you!" the woman said, going through her folders to look for said request.
"Uh, nice! So what's the job ma'am?" asked the girl nicely. Her grandma always told her that niceties are important especially for people who treat her well. The girl nodded to herself on this one. Good call.
"Here! I have a request from a man..." the woman paused, "Ooh! I think this is the son of that odd cat lady down at the Pearl Tenements. I heard she passed away some time ago and her son took over her house. The request is to locate and return to him a couple of cats. Here, you can read the report on your way." handing the file to Satsuki.
"Thanks ma'am! I'll be back in a few to get this stamped," gestured the girl with the file as she walked away.
"Good luck baby doll!~" the woman yelled, which actually was quite embarrassing. The girl ran out and went to the location to meet the client.
As Satsuki located the house, with an odd man standing outside anxiously waiting, she experienced probably one of the most horrendous smells in her life. It just got stronger and stronger as she came near the house. The stench was so strong she had to pull out her small hankie to cover her nose and mouth.
"Are you the kid they sent here?" asked the man, nose stuffy and all.
"Mhmm," gestured the girl.
"Oh, the smell. Yeah, sorry about that. My mother used to own a couple dozen cats and she's not one to really clean up after them that good. Anyway, what I need you to do is--" the man stopped, he just stared blankly at her. For a second she thought he died from the overwhelming cat smell, but she immediately recognized the look on his face.
"I know what you're thinking mister. Look, judging by that look you know who I am. If you don't want me to do your stinkin' job fine by me. Just look for someone else." said the girl as she turned her back. Satsuki started to walk off. It was still early. If she makes it back to the Embassy maybe she could ask the nice lady for another request.
"No, no. please, stay Kanzaki-san. I can call you Kanzaki-san right?" asked the man nervously.
The girl turned back, nodded slightly. A sigh of relief from the man, not that it helped. His nose was so stuffed because of the smell. He cleared his throat before he started to explain the situation further,
"Like what I said, my mother had a lot of cats. I'm not really a cat person so I had them adopted and I'm down to the last two. Thing is, these are the two most chaotic, if you will, among all of them. They cause trouble and mischief for everybody here. I've found a nice old couple by the farmlands to take them in but you need to catch them first. That's it. Catch them and bring them to a stall by the marketplace where the couple will be waiting tomorrow." explained the man.
Satsuki nodded, "Find and catch the cats. Got it."
The man gave her pictures of the two and told her where they usually hang around. The girl needed to act fast. Unlike the first mission she had, this had a deadline. It wouldn't be a good gesture from her if she failed this. She needed to prove herself to the village and this was a good next step.
The girl went on from rooftop to rooftop. She had been practicing her speed and balance for a while now and she could feel the improvement already. She went up to a higher vantage point near where the two misfits hanged out,
"Let's see... One is a blue colored cat and the other is a tabby. Tabby? That's kinda weird sounding color!" the girl chuckled.
It was a good thing the man tried to catch them before, he gave her instructions on where they would go next if they escape. A couple more rooftops and she found herself situated above the street corner where the two feline miscreants were. One is on top of a stack of boxes while the other was grooming itself on the cobble floor.
"Let's see, I think I'm gonna try to use this technique I've been studying," the girl said, taking out a small pebble. She started to concentrate, trying to take out what little chakra she had and transfer it to the pebble. When she felt there was enough energy on the pebble, she immediately jumped towards the cat like a wild lunatic, which actually caught the cats off guard and hurled the small pebble at the one that was previously grooming itself. The pebble hit the cat's forehead the girl landed on the floor. Her shot was good enough to knock the cat unconscious, eyes swirling and all. The other one jumped and ran off immediately after. The girl didn't mind the other one, she knew where it was going next.
Satsuki took the unconscious (and bruised) cat and went back to the man,
"Here, one down. Don't worry. It's not dead." Satsuki said.
"Goodness, what happened?" asked the man.
"Welp, I hurled a stone coated with chakra at 'im. I'm no perfect shot yet, so it didn't do any serious damage to it besides that bruise mister," added the girl.
She gestured to get the other one, the man telling her to not use too much force on the other one. The girl went to the place where this other cat would go if disturbed on their first location. She arrived near the small tree where the cat would normally stay if not on the street corner but it wasn't there.
Satsuki stayed a bit off a good distance and waited patiently for it to arrive. It would take three hours for the cat to arrive. The girl actually fell asleep waiting for it but a gust of wind woke her up just in time to see the cat prowling around the tree. Satsuki rubbed her eyes and mouth and slapped her cheeks to wake herself up. It was crunch time.
She took out another pebble and administered chakra into it again just like the first time. This time was harder because she was yet to further her control of her own energy. She took her time and aimed at the cat while it scratched at the tree,
"I got you now you little--" releasing her pebble towards the feline.
For some reason the cat felt the similar energy and was able to duck the shot. It turned its attention towards the girl, and for some reason, Satsuki felt that it was grinning at her kind of like mocking her before it scurried away.
"AH! NO! You won't get away that easy!" growled the girl as she ran after the cat.
The chase would last for about forty minutes before the girl would stop for a moment to collect herself. They've ran around the same course a couple times already to know where the nuisance would go.
"Maybe I should try that," she said to herself.
She hasn't been that successful in pulling off this technique, but she HAS tried a couple of times where the outcome wasn't that bad. The girl looked around, trying to find something very important for this to work, a wooden plank. The girl walked around for a minute, catching her breath in the process until she found one. It was a bit small but it would do.
Satsuki ran towards the direction which she thinks the cat would go. After a few corners, she was right. The cat was there, and as if waiting for her, snickering (she thought). She started running toward the cat as it hissed at her before jumping off. The two would continue this chase until she felt that she was at the right moment. She put all her force on one foot and jumped, hurling the small wooden plank at the cat. The plank span, easily narrowing the gap between it and the cat. Oddly enough they were running towards the cat lady's place. Satsuki shouted, her uvula probably moved comically inside her throat,
"I GOT YOU NOW YOU LITTLE-- BODY SWITCH!!"
Puffs of smoke erupted in the street, the piece of wood spinning towards the cat became a little girl spinning towards the cat which was then caught momentarily because of Satsuki's size compared to the plank. She grabbed the cat and hugged it tight as they stumbled in the ground and rolled comically towards the man. Photo finish.
"HA! I got you!" yelled the girl delightfully, as she jumped around, the cat held up high (kind of like a certain animated film where a monkey holds a lion cub up high to present to the masses). But the cat wasn't done yet. Its retribution was swift and painful, as it angrily clawed at Satsuki's arms and face.
"OW! OW! OW! OW!! HERE! HERE!" taking the cat into the empty pet carrier. The small girl gave out a huge sigh of relief, to the man's amusement.
After a few minutes to collect herself again, with a glass of ice-cold juice given to him by the man,
"Well, you did pretty well Kanzaki-san. You managed to catch them both in one day. Though, it's nearing supper time. To be honest I had doubts," said the man.
"Well, see these? That little sucker got me good. Anway, I need to take 'em to the marketplace right?" asked the girl.
"Actually, I think I'll do it myself. I didn't expect this one to scratch you badly. I've cleaned up the wounds but I suggest you go to the clinic to get patched up just in case. Oh, here. I signed it already. Make sure to take that back to the Embassy. I'd invite you in for supper but it's still a ways to the marketplace. Anyway, thank you so much for your help. Be careful on your way home." The man waved as he took the two cats to their new forever home.
Satsuki stood there for another minute. She was tired. But the feeling was great. She felt satisfied. She did great, at least in her mind. Sure she had a lot of scratches but they would heal over time. And most of all, luckily enough, her two techniques worked. They still need a ton of work to be perfected but at least she was able to utilize them on something important. The girl walked off with venison on her mind. She wondered what kind of recipe her grandma would do this time.
