Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.
Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.
Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.
The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

The Yamanaka branch that Sanyu's family is a part of is quite new, only 4 generations have existed so far that split off from the main family. Their family, however, is quite unpopular as the original members of the family actually attempted to steal many of the Yamanaka secret techniques that they were not entitled to if they had planned to leave. While the leaders thought they had successfully stopped the member from stealing the secrets, with proper use of the clan techniques most of the clan knows, they were able to read and subsequently copy down the secrets before being exiled for their treachery.
These secrets have been used to teach the children of the family, and anyone who would marry in, though only the basics. When Sanyu was taught these techniques he was told to make sure he kept it a secret, if the main family found out that they were using these skills without their permission they would surely come after their entire family and erase them, including Sanyu even though he was a child at the time. For most of his training Sanyu didn't pay any attention, not forming an interest until he became a genin and needed the skills to pass his chuunin exams, also to make his parents happy that he planned on continuing the clan. Now obviously he was only doing this for his own benefit, but in accordance with his plan to fix his image he wasn't going to tell anyone that.
Though while Sanyu took no initial interest in the clan or its techniques it almost came naturally to him. Not like he was a prodigy or anything but he realized if he had taken his training more seriously he would have passed through the academy and maybe even the chuunin exam on his first try. His first time attempting to transfer his mind into a target was rocky, however, as his aggressive personality made it painfully obvious to the target that their mind was being manipulated. This made his skills unreliable until he could learn how to calm his emotions, and this aided him in performing other shinobi tasks such as espionage, which is what the Yamanaka were known for.
He initially felt like Genjutsu were a weak man's ninjutsu until he practiced it to near perfection, using Genjutsu became second nature and some of the weakest jutsu became usable faster and could stack more that what should normally be possible. Realizing he had a skill that most other Shinobi didn't have access too filled his competitive spirit and ignited a new flame of interest into the Yamanaka skills that he so quickly disregarded when he was younger.
