More history and family tree stuff will go up in profile, but this is a general history overview~
History :: Growing up on the outskirts of the Kumogakure, and living less ninjutsu-filled lives than most, the Gateru family had largely shunned ninja training in the hopes of having a peaceful and uneventful life with ten kids. While both parents were less than stellar shinobi, the line was plagued with short life spans and many enemies, making a family a difficult thing to have, but in the obscurity of a normal downtrodden village by Kelamura, there were fewer things to worry about. It also makes one harder to protect, as one day the grudges of the past resurfaced in a bloody massacre of the children, followed by the parents, and finally every villager unlucky enough to witness the event.
In the aftermath, only two had even the slightest grasp of life in them, and those lights were fading fast as the sun began to set. Having been passing through on a whim, and drawn by the smell of blood, an outcast from Kumogakure happened upon the bodies, and felt the feeble hand of Rana reach at him, begging for help. Less than touched by sympathy and more interested in the numerous bodies to experiment on, the dark sage used his forbidden arts to not only save the siblings, but did so by using the resources of the whole family. The result was a pair of patchwork children haunted in mind and body by their kin every moment of every day.
Contented with this lovely set of abominations, the doctor left them to awaken and discover the effects of his work on their own, content that his "signature" would be left with the cloudlands for years to come. Physically, nothing seemed very out of place as they awoke, although the pains of near death made it somewhat hard to gauge properly. It wasn't until they began to search around for other survivors that they realized that the town was empty, even of corpses. No graves seemed to have been made, and there was certainly enough blood to suggest that they did not dream their injurues or losses, but not long after they began to stumble about and search, the elder sibling collapsed and began to hear the voices of the bigger half of their family. Rega's own sanity was pushed minutes later, although slightly more manageable since the damage from the operation was less severe.
For days, they toiled in anguish as nothing could silence the chaos in their brains, only barely making it to the hidden shinobi village based on knowledge from their parents they didn't even realize they knew. After being taken in, the Med-Nin were baffled for days as to just how this perversion of science had taken place. It wasn't really known how to treat them, as removing the damage was guesswork at best, and crippling them would be a similar best case scenario. There was nothing to be done but to endure and understand, taking each day as a trial to overcome.
Years passed, and the young girls became young women, and respectable kunoichi. The gifts of their family were difficult to tap into, but they had knowledge of techniques above their ranking, experiences of battle hardened veterans, and an ability to understand difficult concepts they'd never studied themselves. Eager to repay their debts to the ninja village, Rega and Rana threw themselves into missions, spreading out to ANBU and Med-Nin branches to better serve.
While Rana expelled her family from her body by emulation of the Sage of Six Paths, Rega chose to try and maximize her synergies as a Chimera. This, coupled with the taxing work of an ANBU captain kept her constantly on the edge of sanity, though she did well to mask this with an eccentric yet upbeat personality, until a mission ending with revenge against her family’s killers prompted those within her to go dormant. When their revenge was gained, they were ready to pass, and Rega was left with her chimera powers suppressed.
For the first time in a decade, the poor girl knew true quiet. She longed for the voices to return, feeling completely lost without her parents. Thankfully, with the help of her sister, and by proxy the rest of her family, she came to terms and managed to finally separate the dormant corpses of her kin, leaving her free to travel down her own path… But deciding that she wasn’t able to part with her mother and siblings, she held fast on the strands of life and death, and willed herself down a path similar yet different to her sister.
At present, she has only just returned to the ANBU after recovering her strength. Much of her earlier bubble-headed nature seems to have faded away, as she is now considerably more comfortable with herself. On occasion, however, she still attempts to reach out to things with tendril-like appendages that are no longer there…
