It wasn't until a few months after she was born when it was discovered that she had a disibility known as congenital analgesia, or the inability to feel pain, when she began chewing on her tongue while teething. This trial often led to several small accidents during their travels, requiring some amount of supervision by either her parents or her older sister as she grew. By the time she was a small toddler, she had begun to pick up sign language shortly after learning to speak in order to effectively communicate with Tsubaki.
When Tsubaki steadily began to have a notable amount of night terrors, her parents put pressure on her being able to regularly inspect herself for injuries in order to be able to pick up on any dangers without immediate supervision. Mao had been startled awake a few nights by her sister's nightly torments, which led to her unknowingly breaking her left leg and right arm as she rushed to ensure her older sibling's safety. Once it seemed their parents had found a solution, Mao's own dreams had been unconsciously affected, often having visions of Tsubaki caring for her in her dreams. Because of this, she looked to her older sister as a savior throughout most of her childhood.
While working with her family in the garden, it became apparent that her abilities as a gardener were sub-par, lacking the patience necessary to be proficient at the craft while Tsubaki excelled.
