Chi sat on top of the roof of a neighboring building, staring at the village gates. Next to her Naku was curled up and sleeping soundly. Chi gently stroked his fur as she thought back to her first encounter with this wall. She hadn’t come in through conventional means, instead, she was brought in through the wall itself. She had never undergone the standard processes performed at the gates, and it interested her to see all the people and their silly papers. Hosekimori didn’t have a gate and it was probably because of that fact that it was so easily felled. The hand that wasn’t petting Naku curled into a fist against the grainy rooftop. She felt the sand scratch her skin. It reminded her of the lashings she received when she did something wrong at the nobleman’s mansion. She had journeyed far since watching her parents getting murdered right before her eyes. The sun was beginning to rise over the village walls and Chi suddenly realized that she had been there all night. She looked down at her brother and companion. This was the last family member the princess had left. He wasn’t good at fighting and he always got her into dire trouble and he continued to be quite loud and… but she genuinely loved him and wouldn’t change his existence for the world. Still, Chikara wondered how much longer they could keep this up. Everyone she’s ever loved has been taken away from her, or she was taken away from them. It wasn’t uncommon for stories she’s heard of shinobi to be similar. There’s always a tragedy, but happy endings were oh so rarer. Virtually every story she’s heard as ended in the death of the hero, or their victory at the cost of the things they hold dear. Stories of real-life weren’t like in the books, not everyone finds love and settles down once they’ve taken out their big bad. “And why not?” Chi spoke aloud, using a tongue that most anyone living in the village wouldn’t understand. With her staff gone, that language was the only thing she had left of her people. The savage often spoke in this manner when she was upset, as she happened to be in that emotional moment. She smashed a hand against the rooftop then it cracked and her hand was cut. Chi cursed in her language and spun around so she could stand up. Naku stirred, wondering dully why he no longer felt the hand of his sister running over his fur. A sleepy bleating escaped his lips and then he returned to sleep. Chi tore off a strip of her dress and bound her hand with the cloth. There wasn’t much blood, at least in comparison to what she had seen from battle. However, it was enough to trickle down and leave a small puddle at her feet. She thought, “It’s time to wake up from this terrible nightmare and finish him.” |
