One night Hoichi was approached by what sounded like a man. The man requested that Hoichi would perform before a group of noblemen. Hoichi agrees and the man took Hoichi to an unknown location. Hoichi was then greeted by a roaring crowd excited to bear witness to Hoichii’s musical gift. Hoichi performed for this mysterious audience. The audience was so moved by Hoichi’s performance that they asked if she would return for two more nights. Hoichi natural agrees to return.
However as the man began lead Hoichi back to the temple he urged that Hoichi would keep her visits with the noblemen a secret. The man told Hoichi that the group wish to be anonymous. Hoichi agreed to the terms. In the meantime the priest had noticed his friend’s absence and when Hoichi returned the priest would demand an explanation. However keeping to her promise Hoichi remained silent. The priest growing suspicious instructed his servants to spy on his neice.
The next night when Hoichi was led to the gathering place the priest’s servants followed her. Hoichi was again greeted by the doting crowd and began to sing. Hoichi could hear their words of praise and sounds of enjoyment. In response she with all her heart, but the servants were confused to discover that this blind bard had wandered into the cemetery and was singing seemingly alone amidst the headstones. As Hoichi continued to perform, the spirits would start to become visible dancing to her melody. Frighten the servant ran back to the temple to report their findings to the priest.
Fearing that the spirits had targeted Hoichi for malicious intent, he confronts Hoichi upon her arrival. The priest told Hoichi what his servants saw and devised a plan to protect her by using sutras to make Hoichi invisible to the spirits. Hoichi refused to go allow with it despite the priests pleads. Unable to change Hoichi’s mind the priest became furious and kicked Hoichi out of the temple and tells her never to return. That third night Hoichi sings for the dead and they were grateful for her performance. So much so that they provide him a gift more precious than gold. They gave her the ability to see not with her eyes but with her ears. Now homeless Hoichi makes her way to another village, one call Konoha.
