“Focus, Kei,” came the disgruntled voice of the boys’ uncle. “Easier… agh… said than done.” Kei rebutted, redirecting another of his brother’s incoming strikes with his bracer. Kei caught the follow-up elbow and attempted to trip his brother, who evaded skillfully before continuing his assault. The two were sparring under the supervision of their uncle, who was continuing their father’s tradition of pitting the boys’ evenly matched skills against each other to hone them to razor-edge. He needed to find a way to stunt Sho’s attack that would allow him to go on the offensive, as his constant blocking didn’t give him time to counter. Then he saw it, there was a moment where Sho was committed to his attack to the point he wouldn’t be able to defend. If Kei could avoid just one blow, it’d give him the opening he needed. As the next attack came, Kei angled his torso just enough for Sho’s blow to miss and countered with a brutal elbow before sweeping his legs from under him. Kei stood there, panting, for a moment. He’d have to keep that little trick in mind.[/legend]

Strength, speed, and skill were the marks of the best taijutsu practitioners. Kei knew that these things were achieved through constant practice. Repetition gave him speed and skill but there would come a time where he’d need to be able to overpower an opponent. To get to that level he’d need to do some real work. Every morning he went for a run to prepare himself before he started strength training. Every day he pushed himself further in some way; more reps, more weight, more ways to exercise. Whether it was chin-ups with a backpack full of rocks or literally juggling said rocks he worked to build the powerful, limber muscles that would give him an edge in combat. When it came time to test his progress and Kei strapped on his bracers, he was surprised by how light his hands felt. He threw a few test punches, his speed and timing had improved as for the strength test… He certainly hadn’t been able to crack a boulder in two with a single punch before.[/legend]

[legend="Weapon Mastery: Unarmed: WC=240"]Kei looked at the glowing blade that extended from his hand. He knew how sharp it was. The blade was forged of dimensional energy but it was also an extension of himself. In a very real way, it was an extension of his ability to fight without a conventional weapon in hand. He allowed the blade to dissipate and looked at his advanced guards, the weapons that protected and braced his wrists and forearms. They felt a little heavy, but his strength training had made it easier. The key from now on would be to not only train in those braces, but to wear them everywhere. His weapons had to be part of him, in a way. If he could accustom himself to always having them on, or at least ready to slip on at half a moment's notice, then he'd be one step ahead of most opponents. The best part was that his advanced guard, any bracer-type weapon really, could generally be easily worn under clothing or otherwise concealed. He jabbed the air a few times, his fists a blur. The guards were always a comfortable fit but for Kei, they would become like a second skin. It took some time getting used to, but wearing his guards soon became second nature to him. He found he could move better in them and his movements automatically adjusted to the fact he was wearing them. It was a good feeling.[/legend]
