Johi no Ukko was born in a small farming village in the North, around the Cloud region. His mother and father would spend their time teaching Ukko about the values of agriculture and being able to provide for yourself, which they thought would ultimately aid his development as a person. While one parent may be away on a mission, the other would usually stay. However, there were always enough people to tend to the child as he grew. His hometown, while visibly seeming to produce for themselves, was actually very interconnected. The entire place shared a deep sense of comraderie, a bond that does not break easily. Ukko was raised to help himself, but first see if you can help others.
When Ukko's family can no longer bare the harsh brutality of the region's climate destroying every inch of plentiful farmland, they move south to a much more humid environment. In fact, usually always 100% humidity: Kirigakure no Sato. The Village shrouded in Mist. Moving to a new place and leaving behind everything you held dear was of course a harsh toll on any child, but Ukko pushed through. He learned to become more gutsy and pursue conversation with people his age.
Now, Ukko and his family have lived in the Land of Waves for about two years, and everything was perfectly back to normal. He spent much of his time roaming the village, listening to all of the new sounds play beautifully on his musical palette. His parents could again resume growing a portion of their crops, but with the economy being much more stable down here, they did not need to do much. The harvests would practically grow themselves compared to the rough northern atmosphere. They hadn't been given any missions or tasks to be completed by a village elder in quite some time. This was the most Ukko had ever felt a sense of misplacement and homesickness, but the benefits of his life now were about as overwhelming. A nice balance of reverence for the old, and excitement for the new.
Since Ukko's family was much more fiscally stable, and they had moved to a region with myriads more of people and establishments, Ukko's parents thought it best to finally enroll him into a shinobi training facility. They watched their son's passion for being a proud villager, and desire to become an experienced combatant blossom more and more each day - obviously just counting down the days that his life of childhood would cease to exist. They knew from experience that it would be a rigorous lifestyle, and that the possibility of kidnap, major injuries and illnesses, and especially death was nearly imminent. But the only way they knew to prepare their son for what was to be was to put him through the same kind of tasks of determination and trials of learning and failure that they had been accustomed to since their childhood.
