Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

[col]Character Physical Description:
His face seems to always be set in a calm, stoic mask that doesn't seem to be broken by expressions very often; yet his violet-blue eyes show enough intention and meaning to make up for his stone face which is framed by the hair that fountains down his back and shoulders. A cascade of midnight black hair with natural crimson highlights within, ending roughly at the bottom of his ribs; from time to time, however, he will put it up into a warrior's ponytail to have it out of the way. Somehow, he's kept is so that the vast majority of his locks are behind his back and are apparently heavy enough that only a fairly stiff gust of air can get them to lift from his back; despite not seeming the type to do so, he takes care of his hair just as much as the rest of his body while washing so as to keep it strong and somewhat tame.

Overall, the best definition of the first glance at the man is “Juggernaut”, with the wide set of his shoulders, his towering height bordering close to seven feet, and the hint of heavy muscle that can be identified through some of his motions and the way his clothing settles across his body. His body structure is very typically male, his shoulders create a V shape with his narrow waist to give him a very broad-backed look. Between his shoulder blades, the towering obelisk of a man bears a runic-tribal marking of pure black ink; he knows that it was significant but knows not the extent of the abilities it harbors. His musculature is very defined and obvious, though not into the realm of grotesque and overly developed, his stomach and calves tend to be the ones showing the most definition on his entire body when revealed and the rest of his musculature is shown properly when being used for intense exertion such as training. All of it stretches his thick, tanned skin across his frame smoothly and very little body hair can be spotted aside from very light hair on his chin that are clear and invisible until close and intent inspection of his face.|

Character Behavioral Description:
The man's stoic facial expression is only in part to his natural look, but also in part to his closed personality. He comes across as cold, uncaring, and rigid with how he keeps to himself; rarely socializing for the fun of it, though that is not to say he will walk away from someone that strikes up a conversation. He is quiet, collected, and careful; one could call him 'paranoid' and be close to the mark with his caution and deliberate actions of observation; though that is common with most veteran shinobi. The cold exterior melts away slowly, allowing those that get to know him to see the care he takes is, in part, to not harm another by mistake; he does not understand how to interact with others at times, not having some of the capacity to sympathize with or comprehend emotional states that others experience.

Of course, just like every human out there, there is more than the surface of what he appears to be like; the man has a love of music, as well as a curiosity for creation that borders on obsession. Interested in building small trinkets with chakra crystals that he manages to get his hands on, only to deconstruct them a short time after to tinker with some other artifact he has in mind. He is also a great deal more open with those who are friends rather than just allies or associates; more willing to continue a conversation or even strike one up himself. As a general rule, it does take some time and patience to know him, though this can be said for anyone. In all, he upholds a respectful attitude even to those who are 'below' him either in rank or prowess as well as has a great regard for common courtesy and those who have it.

Even as a patient man, there are some situations that get under his skin and make his blood boil; primarily regarding children for some reason. Even he doesn't know why, but a child or someone who is unable to defend themselves being being assaulted by those stronger brings about rage and ire deep set into his nature that it causes him to act; yet at the same time knocking a student around to teach them combat, or watching such displays does not invoke such wrath.

Character History(Including Core Ability):
As a boy, Ryu's mother was never present in his upbringing for what ever reason; it was as though she were simply a shadow in his memories while his father trained him in the Arts of Taijutsu even before he was intended to go into the Academy. It was rough, initially at five years old he was unable to keep up with the standards expected of him; but as the training continued steadily and increased in demand slowly by the time he was eight years old the young Ryu had made his father proud that his son would bear the Kazehi name to his peers. In terms of physical aptitude, Ryu excelled greatly but in the terms of Ninjutsu and the ability to use hand-seals his excellence wavered and his ability to use Genjutsu was right out; which seemed to be an acceptable loss to his father. "The strength of one is measured in the solidity of their will; if that is indomitable so too is the body and soul" His father would tell him, it was encouraging in a strange way. Young Ryu was not lacking the intelligence to use it but merely the flexibility, his father seemed to sense this and encouraged the boy to get as strong as he could in his own way. That was not to say that his father pushed him to become adaptable, to be able to bend enough so he wouldn't break as he continued his years in the academy, he kept a decent amount to himself but was polite enough to make a few passing friends here and there. Friends was not where the youth's mind seemed to be though, as he continued to grow and his training didn't stop even after hours of the Academy he became more stressed that he wasn't meeting the expectations his father seemed to have of him. "You can always do better son, it's simply a matter of effort and consistency." The boy misconceived the understand his mentor, his guiding figure, his inspiration's words were cleaving blows to his confidence until one day he became ill enough that he missed several days of school.

During this time, he had lucid dreams of a strange sort; that he was running down a corridor without windows and doors sealed with mortar; his father's words chased him the entire way. "A man's pride is that of his family and those he cares for, he who upholds something greater than himself attains the height and breadth of a mountain and the depth of the ocean." and "Your shoulders and back are the most important as a man, for they will bear the burdens of your friends and family; the width of the shoulders to carry it all, and the strength of back to uphold the expectations." The more he dreamed and ran the more the words tormented his mind, not understanding what his father meant. Every so often, his eyes would pierce reality to see a blurred, softened face only for a moment before they faded into the dreary corridor of his dreams. Nearly a week passed and Ryu came out of his tormented sleep to see his father sitting calmly over him, smiling through his thick beard down at his son. "There you are, it seems your mother's spirit cradled you close enough to bring you through." As his father helped nurse him back to health, the man explained just why his mother was never present. "When you were born, your mother revealed that she had an illness; seemingly passed through the lines that would kill if not watched. The nature of it, it struck at the body's control center, searing the nerves and shutting down a weak body; but those who survived and passed through the 'Unending Corridor' would be the strongest bodied in the family, the most able to carry on the name." Sorrow and his son's thirst brought a pause to the story, and once his parched throat was slaked the boy faded into weary delirium of lucid sleep once more. Unknown to his father, the boy's mind had only paused on the journey through this corridor, the illness had only abated long enough but armed with his father's confidence and understanding of his mother's absence; he had to make them proud, the boy was determined to pull through.

He no longer ran away from the words he had once feared and despised. "Don't place your faith in your abilities and strength alone, but place it with your loved ones so that you will go unbroken by the burdens of life." and "Seek to test your mettle against the greatest of all, not the men and women, but Nature herself. Her rewards are worth more than the glory given by your fellows." As he continued down the corridor, he sought escape at the doors sealed shut but could not break through them. Having no choice but to carry on with his father's teachings, all the words he'd said while raising and training Ryu were the only company he had in this twisted hall. It felt like eternity, fading in and out of consciousness, he seemingly made it to the end of that never ending hallway but the door was sealed shut just like all the others as if to mock his effort to arrive there. Ryu slammed himself against the door, yet it would not budge. He pulled at it, hoping to pry it open, yet it would not budge. He tore at the mortar till his finger bled, yet still it did not budge. As he leaned against the door, feeling the futility of his efforts and the chilling knowledge that he would die; one last pearl of wisdom came to him though not in his father's voice. "The strong survive, but it is the indomitable that truly live." The voice was one he knew, not from personal experience but from a memory so deep and buried that he couldn't recall where it came from. It was his mother's voice.

The indomitable truly live. Ryu stared at the door for moments more before starting to slam into it with as much force as he could, feeling the cold and tired weight of failure and despair press down upon him as he did. The weight bore down, threatening to drag him to his knees; struggling to stand as well as battering the door in wore him out, brought him an entirely new level of exhaustion but he fought onward. Slowly, as though years had passed while he struggled against the door, cracks began to show. The youth dug his fingers into the crack, alternating tying to dig his way through the door and forcing his entire body through; fighting onward despite the exhaustion, the urge to lay down and sleep was intense. He wanted nothing more than to sit down, lean against the wall off to the side of the door and sleep his exhaustion away, let his worries simply fade into the background of sleep, deep and restful. He fought instead, hammering his body against the door for all he was worth and began to tear chunks out of the door with his bloodied fingers. Tasting victory, he stepped away from the door to observe his work for just a moment before charging forward with all his might and bowling into the door with his shoulder.

It gave way, caving beneath his body and will. He stumbled on the other side and rolled to a stop on his back, staring up at the dark ceiling in his room with a throbbing head. Lifting a shaking hand, the boy touched his forehead and winced at the clammy feeling; pushing himself out of his bed unsteadily with a groan of displeasure...only to see his body still lying there looking fitful in sleep with his father looking haggard but watchful, never looking up or away from the Ryu laying in the bed. The surreal feeling of this experience confused him, but as he looked away and to the door that he had burst through he could see the hall with a woman standing in the hall with so many others behind her. "You have done well, my dear son. A door for each to come to rest. An obstacle that drags them down and tests their resolve to continue on. You who have breached the cursed hall, take your indomitable resolve further on." They all turned and filed away, some walking far out of sight down the hall while others simply leaned against nearer doors and closed their eyes only to slump down against it and fade away. His mother was the last of such to do so, giving him one last sad glance as she leaned her shoulder against the door nearest to the one he broke through and weakly slid to her knees. "I'm sorry that I wasn't strong enough. I'm so, so very sorry." Her eyes welled up with tears; these were her last moments in the struggle just like his before she collapsed completely and faded away, leaving the hall empty and devoid of life once more.

Closing his eyes to take a breath, he suddenly jolted and looked around confused; he was lying on his back once again, but his movements were sluggish and he felt exhausted, the weight of the blankets on him bearing into his chest and threatening to crush him. The boy's throat was dry and tight, leaving his voice a rasping croak as he called out to his father; the man was across the room immediately, holding his son gently but tightly. "I thought I had lost you as well, my boy." Ryu felt his father's arms quivering slightly around him and weakly wrapped his own arms around the man to return the embrace. "The indomitable truly live." Ryu managed to croak out quietly before his need for water caused him to cough and choke. Although the lucid dreams were starting to fade away, and he couldn't remember quite what he was dreaming about; the boy felt as though he had done something his mother would have been proud of him for.

Yet as the years marched ever onward, the week that he spent out of the Academy faded away quickly into the tumult of life. His father trained him harder, pushed him further, and in the classes that required endurance or physical efforts he excelled in; passing his ninjutsu skill classes within acceptable margins as well and thankfully the Academy did not dock him anything but rank in Genjutsu. Not at the top of his class, but his teachers could not deny the admirable efforts he put forward to continue with anything even with genjutsu and how miserably he failed at it. Graduating to Genin feeling confident and proud, Ryu made admirable efforts to learn more but his father shared some wisdom with him before he became frustrated with his dwindling results. "You learn more of yourself and your art as you help to teach others." With this in mind, Ryu divided up his time between his own training and helping students train; one such girl that pushed herself to the limits and continued to train hard, not unlike him. Though he didn't know her name, it wasn't important at the time; they trained hard and parted for Ryu to help others once she had a handle on what she was doing.

Of course, the graduation day for that particular class was cut short by a disaster; but Ryu hadn't been present for that. (Referencing Kuroyuki's Backstory bits here, talked to her about it; assuming her approval will be required.) And the class was lost, including the girl he'd help train so hard; he found this out later and it was a bit painful, left him bitter and resentful that there was nothing he could have even done had he been there. From time to time, he visited the girl's parents, introducing himself as a friend that knew her during the time she was training at the academy, visiting her shrine and burning her face into his mind for months upon months...until his life as a shinobi swept them away into the back of his mind. Missions, training, and caring for his father who's health had begun to decline.

Ryu was in his late teens when he made Chuunin, showing his exemplary resolve in the exams and his indomitable spirit to take on the tests demanded of him. Though it was likely an imperfect performance that got him through, he felt proud of himself and attended to his duties, helping teach students and Genin on a regular basis while he wasn't doing missions for the village or attending his father. Tragedy struck years down the road while Ryu was in his twenties, his father's health had degraded enough and the man's body gave out finally. On his death bed, the man smiled up at his son, simply clasped a weak hand around his son's and nodded his approval one last time before closing his eyes with that smile on his face. It was the first time that he had cried in grief since he had been a boy, his cries of emotional agony bordered on battle shouts and he beat himself into exhaustion with training, attempting to bury the pain in something more tangible that could be treated with a salve or rest. In the end, he was found by a couple people with most of his muscle tissue torn and fatigued, barely able to breath without shivering in pain from not just his wracked body.

In time, he recovered, but not wholly. He withdrew from others, became even quieter and stoic never letting his emotion slip out of control again; not wanting to disgrace his father with childish tantrums. Instead of mulling and dwelling, he set his mind to work tinkering; gathering chakra crystals and making small little artifacts that amused him for a time before the man dismantled them for parts to something else he decided to put together. Eventually, through the same effort and show of skill the man made it to the rank of Jounin in his late twenties then spent a vast majority of his time training while not doing missions; his life as a shinobi all but consumed him; there was little time for else. It took a toll on him with his inter-personal relation skills; not quite as skilled at communication with 'small talk' or 'idle conversation' that others seemed interested in and kept himself removed to prevent conflicts that would arise with those who couldn't really get along with his personality. Every so often, the man takes time to visit students and observe them training, watch to see who has potential to go far or those who will require extra teaching to make it up the rungs. During those moments, he remembered and missed his father, but they were only slight pangs of discomfort upon a quickly jading heart. The strong survive, but the indomitable truly live. Ryu admitted it, he was only surviving.

Steadfast 0/20 points
Maximum Defense - Modification (2 points)
Restriction- Requires Defensive Technique
A Steadfast can learn this variation on the Defensive Technique once they have practiced it to its full potential. Instead of dodging around like a flea, they can focus on guarding all of their weak points in order to reduce they amount of damage from attacks. As an alternative, they can almost completely forgo attacking, throwing all of their energy into evading enemy attacks instead.
Effect: When using Defensive Stance, you can trade 1 point of Accuracy in order to reduce oncoming damage by 5% instead of gaining a dodge bonus (to a maximum of -2 accuracy and -10% damage taken), or you can trade 1 point of Accuracy for 1 point of Dodge up to a maximum of 6 (as opposed to the previous 4).

Great Fortitude - Passive (3 points)
Restriction- C Rank and up
A Steadfast that learns this has mastered their ability to take hits without injury, making their bodies almost impossibly strong. It takes quite a bit to make them actually feel an attack, and even then you might not illicit a reaction.
Effect: Ignores damage each round. How much is reduced is based on your character level, this skill reduces 75 Damage per level each round.

Stand Fast - Independent Special Move (2 points)
Restriction- C Rank and up
A Steadfast who learns this particular ability is able to tap into a great reservoir of inner resolve, temporarily becoming able to suffer huge amounts of damage without incurring any serious harm to themselves by taking an absolutely defensive stance.
Effect: For one round, the user reduces all damage against themselves by 75% but cannot attack in that round. Usable only once per combat. Does not take any more Damage reduction buffs. If the user is not hit during the round this is used, it will not count as being used.

Human Shield - Independent Special Move (2 points)
Restriction- Requires Body Switch
A Steadfast is excellent at taking blows, but not everybody else is. Using their natural ability to soak damage an extension of the Kawarimi (Body Switch) jutsu, a Stalwart can leap in front of an ally and take attacks for them, perhaps preventing them from being harmed.
Effect: The Steadfast can switch places with an ally that is attacked at a cost of 0.5 AP (they cannot switch places with an ally when they are being attacked). Allies that are aware of this ability and can Body Switch with real clones can designate the Steadfast as a target; if the Steadfast is unwilling to switch, then the jutsu automatically fails. The triggering attack is resolved against the Steadfast instead, who can attempt to dodge it normally.

Awesome Power - Modification (2 points)
Restriction- C Rank and up, Requires Hidden Power
A Steadfast ninja with the ability to bring forth a deep seeded power within them will often test that power, pushing to themselves to the limits at all times until they have mastered those reserved abilities. When they are pushed again, you can expect the backlash to be severe.
Effect: The user gains +1 to their Secondary stats rather than +.5. This caps at +4 to their secondaries.

Willfull - Boost (1 point)
Restriction- Can only be purchased a maximum of two times
A Steadfast ninja has willpower beyond that of anybody else, able to beat away enemy illusions and maintain focus on their goal. A Steadfast nin is one who possesses not only fortitude of the body, but of the mind as well.
Effect: +1 Genjutsu Save

Second Wind - Independent Special Move (3 points)
Restriction- C Rank and up
Just when enemies think they've got the Steadfast one down, when they've hit their limits and can’t fight any harder, that’s when it’s time to use the Second Wind. Due to training, those with Steadfast have amplified their natural ability to recover to extraordinary levels.
Effect: The user regains 20% max HP, and cancels all Bleeding. This is usable only once per combat.

Free Will - Passive (2 points)
Those with Steadfast are not easy to detain, able to break out of jutsu and traps that would seem completely foolproof by sheer willpower. They simply cannot be held down when they've got a goal to accomplish, and you’d be a fool to try.
Effect: The Steadfast gains +2 Dodge/Save against binds, and has an additional +5% chance of escaping.

Indomitable Spirit - Passive (3 points)
Through raw training and persistence, the Steadfast ninja has a will stronger than their body. No matter what torturous pain they may be going through, they can overcome and fight on.
Effect: The user ignores one point of debuff from any and all sources (so a Blinding Flash that causes a -3 to Accuracy and Dodge only causes a -2 to the user). In addition, they are not influenced by any fear effects.

Poison Immunity - Modification (2 points)
Restriction- Requires Poison Resistance
A Steadfast ninja who learns to resist poison takes things a step beyond what normal people would do, putting their excellent health to the test and continuing to poison themselves where others would stop. Nearly killing themselves, the Steadfast gain incredible resistance to poisons of all sorts.
Effect: Increases bonuses from Poison Resistance to Immune to Weak Poison, +3 against Strong Poison, +2 against Heavy Poison’

Undying Warrior - Independent Special Move (2 points)
Restriction- B Rank and up
This powerful skill is the penultimate technique that any Steadfast ninja could learn, allowing them to increase their resolve to a level that defies imagination. By focusing all of their attention, energy, and willpower on one target, the Steadfast ninja is able to stave off even death until that enemy is laid to rest. This is best used when they are in desperate straights, as a final act of will.
Effect: When the Steadfast ninja starts their turn unconscious due to having 0 HP or lower (but no lower than -50% of their Max HP), they may choose to revive and act again. They receive +2 to Accuracy on all attacks against the opponent that felled them. If their HP drops below -50% of their Max HP, they fall unconscious again and cannot use this technique unless their HP rises above this value. They lose 1500 CP at the end of every round they act while having less than 0 HP (if they run out of CP, this is taken from their HP), and this technique can be used for a total of three rounds in a battle.

Resilience - Boost (1 point) x3
Restriction- Can be purchased up to three times
Steadfast ninja push the limits of the human body, ignoring pain and pushing on to absorbing more damage than their heartiest allies. This helps them to defend their allies as long as possible by extending the time they can remain fighting.
Effect: +2 HP modifier.

Reciprocate - Jutsu (1 point, 1 point to rank up)
Restriction- A-Rank and up
This deadly jutsu unique to the Steadfast taps into the muscle memory of their body, taking the pain that they've suffered and turning it against an opponent. With a solid hit from their palm, the Steadfast transfers all of their pain and injury into the enemy’s body, sometimes with interest.
Rank 1: Deals all of the damage dealt to the Steadfast in the past two rounds (including damage that was negated), at +1 Accuracy
Rank 2: Deals all of the damage dealt to the Steadfast in the past three rounds (including damage that was negated), at +2 Accuracy

Cost: 3 AP, Costs Cp equal to 50% of the damage Dealt

Notes:
- Usable at any time; does not require to be declared 2-3 rounds beforehand. Max damage is at 6800. This cannot be buffed. Uses melee accuracy.

Jinchuurki App
After several weeks, Ryu managed to get leave; some relaxation time out in the country to unwind and maybe even dig up some crystals or some other material that he could utilize to tinker with during his down time. There was no specific destination in mind, but he didn't even really need to travel out of the country either; still the man had to go through the channels, get his passport, and get told that he had a month to return. Seeing that he had plenty of time to pack his supplies for a trip while his request was..."processed", the man was able to walk out of the village that afternoon and set off into the hills of Iwa and into the around. Since this was mostly just a relaxation trip, he simply wandered and meandered aimlessly in a direction away from the gates of the city and away from people in general, basking in the songs of the various animals. In the first day, he covered several miles; barely exhausted by the time night began to fall and it was time to set a camp he was so far into the wilderness that only a stray hunter or perhaps a forester would find him.

It was pleasant, being able to recline and watch the stars glimmer into life as the night deepened till he managed to drop into a light, wary doze till the sun broke the horizon once more. Nothing but a curious deer disturbed his sleep, and even then it was only a wet, prying nose pressed against his face a couple times before his cheek was pulled at by lips and the creature lost interest. While more disturbed by the fact that a deer just practically kissed his face, the man rubbed the saliva off his face and decided that next time...he'd sleep in a tree. Once dawn broke, Ryu was up and breaking down what little he'd set and began his journey once more, keeping himself aimed away from the village just enough that he could remember the general direction and not get turned around by mistake. He covered quite a bit more ground even before the sun reached midday, finding a small little grove to settle in for a time. Thus far, his leave had been pleasant; no real worries or people to make him feel tense, Ryu started to take his time and explore more than just travel. Hooking a little ways off from the nearly straight path he'd been traveling in from Iwa, the man eventually found a small ravine that cut into the side of a hill as though a massive spike had pierced downward into the earth a just a slight angle. He carefully descended through the brush growth within the ravine, following it down into a chasm that continued at the same angle as the ravine outside.
A curious formation for sure, with how smooth the ravine outside was but the way the rock was deformed and blasted it didn’t look natural. The path he followed narrowed and made it more difficult to keep his pack from catching on the spikes of stone that stuck out as though they were thorns. In a short time, he had to pull out a flashlight to be able to see anything; and upon turning the light on the area around him suddenly burst into nearly blinding sparks as the light refracted off small crystals all around the chasm. It was startling to see so many crystals exposed, even if they were mundane; after the man’s eyes recovered from the shock of the sudden amount of light, he pressed carefully onward down the slope with his curiosity piqued.

Through hours of careful descent, picking his way among the slope so he didn’t catch his equipment on the jagged walls, the man finally had to halt his descent for a moment as the chasm suddenly opened up into a cavern; of which he could not see the floor but there was a slight reddish-orange light deeper within the hole that he noted, as well as the heat that rose forth from the hole. It was not a place one would normally go into, and as he looked back in the direction that he came with a frown, he hung his pack upon one of the walls and ate a meal before delving into this curiosity. Using his chakra, the man carefully made his way down into the great cavern; forced to crawl along the ceiling until he found a wall, and with the intense heat that filled the area he had begun to sweat nearly immediately despite the very little exertion put forth. The minutes ticked by, but eventually Ryu was able to find a wall that sloped downwards, using the same caution that he took to crawl along the ceiling to make his way down the cavern’s wall.
No floor was in sight, even with his flashlight’s beam being swept about it seemed as though the darkness was a solid wall all around him. All light but the deep reddish-orange deeper within the belly of the earth seemed as though it was swallowed up and locked away; the man had to be all the more cautious as he crept down the wall, hugging it tightly with his chakra so that he would not plummet and test his body’s solidity against the hand of gravity and possibly a very sharp stalagmite. Forever and a day later, in all honesty time felt as though it didn’t exist here, he made it to the floor and was able to look around at the shards of rock frozen as though they had been in the midst of springing upwards and away from some great force.
As the man continued onward, towards the source of the reddish glow; the ground around him forced him into caution. It was as though some great impact or intense flame caused rocks and crystals to become fused in uneven, jagged formations and then they simply turned back to stone as they attempted to fly away. As well, the heat intensified; the man's sweat poured out of him in a steady seep, only to become steam around him as his trek continued on to attempt satiation of his curiosity. The light grew no brighter than it had before, but yet Ryu found himself able to see better with a closer proximity, his flashlight's beam wavered and flickered though with the radiation of heat distorting and altering the shape of the air, it was disorientating to watch but his eyes became focused on another object, instead of watching the light or the floor the violet-blue orbs settled to gaze upon a glorious crystal settled atop a formation of rocks.
It was nearly three feet tall, jagged on some spots, but smooth in yet others; it looked as though intense heat had molded and formed it to have swept up point; and all the heat in the cavern seemed to be radiating off the crystal itself. And the feel of the energy, it was a chakra crystal, it most certainly had to be! The man could only get within five feet of it before the energy began to blister his skin; though they would heal quickly, Ryu did not wish to chance greater degrees of burns so lightly. And so, he walked around the formation, to observe just how it was settled. It reminded him of a lotus flower, with how the spikes of stone rose up; and the bare crystal itself seemed to be sitting on end. It was roughly fifteen inches in diameter, and three feet tall from the thin, pointed tip to the thick base where it stuck into the rock.
He was certain, after examining this great specimen, he wanted to take it home. Rubbing his hands together for a moment, he contemplated on how to get the crystal out of the ground, he would have to go with a lot of force to try to jar it before seeing about knocking it over indirectly from the other side. Setting his flashlight down, the man coiled his muscles up into a tight knot before springing into the air with a great howl, his fist blazing with chakra as it fueled the limb for the crushing blow to the earth before the crystal…But the earth and crystal moved just as his fist struck the ground, taking many of the spires of stone with it for his fist to shatter massive chunks into seething, half-melted stone below.

You dare challenge me, human?!
The massive creature peeled itself out of the floor, the voice was massive both in volume and magnitude; the pressure of it pushed the man back across the floor away from it so that he had all the better of a view to see the enormous being rise forth from the pit it had apparently been resting in; it dwarfed the man crouched before it by dozens of times, the spires of stone gleamed within the ruddy light of the magma that it stood in; eyes blazed the same colored light focused and bearing down upon Ryu, the intruder that dared to attack. The crystal was lodged at the end of the massive saurian's snout, as though it were a horn to offset the rows of razor sharp, obsidian teeth within the maw; matching the talons of the creature's fore claws that gripped the lip of the pit and likely even those of the creature's feet through they still remained within the lava. Solid, thick, stone was its hide, only broken here and there by veins of molten material that didn't seep out but seemed to throb in time with the flickers the crystal gave off.
Power radiated off this creature, a crushing presence even as it rose up to show the cavern’s depth as the massive saurian’s head didn’t even begin to touch the ceiling even as it was illuminated by the furious red. “Was hardly the intent, but if that’s how it needs to be.” The man pushed off the oppressive aura, though the heat was starting to rise to an unbearable level as the reptile climbed forth out of the angry, seething stone beneath the thick crust of earth that divided the chambers.
All flesh and blood, weak and pathetic! I shall wipe you away as though slag!
Ryu was nearly driven back to his knees by the furious bellow the creature emitted in challenge, the man sneered right back, howling his own fury as he lunged forward to punch the creature’s lower jaw even as it lunged to devour the man. Their blows met with a thunderous crack, Ryu flung backward by the beast’s strength and sent tumbling along the fragmented earth of the cavern; even as the saurian reeled to the side from the power behind the man’s fist. Neither of them were even close to done; just as Ryu sprung to his feet, his clothing shredded apart from the edges around him and small wounds sealing themselves shut from his abnormal cellular regeneration the creature stomped a foot that sent not only cracks into the earth around them but lances of magma jetting out at Ryu from between them.
Put on the defensive for a moment, the man was forced to take shelter behind a taller spire of earth and wait out the rain of liquid earth before jetting out to run along the wall being chased by yet more globs of the intensely hot stone. After a couple feet, he launched himself upon the creature’s face, scorched by the crystal as he passed by it, his clothing being singed and heat blisters rising up from just the temporary proximity, his fist bore the saurian’s head downward with a blow that put a small divot in the stone of the beast’s snout. “Urrrryiaaaaah!” His downward assault continued as he slammed his heel into the beast’s cumbersome skull, driving it to the earth completely with a tumultuous crash and grind of earth on earth.
It was nothing but bothersome to the beast, however. Temporary shock, if that, by being batted around by a frail little human! A massive tail came spinning around as the creature shifted its body and swatted Ryu out of the air and across the cavern to crush him against the wall; filling the air with muted, wet cracks of broken and fractured bones.
The pain was intense, but the man bore it, forcing himself upwards. He would not die here! Not even against a mighty foe such as this, even if he had to drag himself crippled out of this hole. Clenching his fists, the air around them blazed to light with the fury of his own chakra and he rushed forward again; rolling between the beats’ massive feet even as it swiped at him with its jaws. The crunch of devoured stone sounded as Ryu spun quickly and assaulted the foot nearest to him, battering the limb with all his fury! His wounds sealed shut even then, and in his fury his energy rose higher with the onslaught. The beast’s flesh cracked with one more blow even as it attempted to move out of the way and quash this tiresome ape, sending magma spewing out uncontrolled from the beast’s body and forcing Ryu to escape before he was devoured by the seething earth that seemed to be the creature’s blood.
BOTHERSOME MAN! Once again the lava rose up from the floor and slithered about chasing Ryu around the cavern once again, spitting and snarling as it slowly devoured more and more rock, leaving trails and growing thicker and brighter with more of the earth devoured. “You shall fall, beast!” The sounds of their battle was deafening, mostly for Ryu himself who couldn’t hear his own breathing over the thundering hammers of the beast’s feet and the snarl of magma all around him still trying to capture and turn him to cinders. As Ryu rushed in once more, assaulting the beast’s broadside before having to continue moving to avoid the semi-liquid stone that now looked as though it were a great serpent chasing him, fangs dripping as its maw snapped shut on the saurain, only to burrow through the creature and blast out the other side as though passing through the air itself. The beast took no notice of the passage and turned to pursue the man as well, thundering forward with massive bounding steps that cracked and crushed the earth below it.
Hitting and dashing, strike and escape, the two played this game until the serpent was so large that it was coiled around the entirety of the room without much space for Ryu to dash about upon the walls or even the ceiling. The heat was maddening, and even as steam rose off the man who now stood his ground before the great beast his body even fought the environment, healing burns even as they formed.
No more running about, you insect. Time to meet your end! It slammed a foot down attempting to crush Ryu who slid slightly out of the way to slip unharmed between the massive toes, climbing upon the creature’s foot and running up to its underside hammering the beast with the entirety of his strength as he went and clung to the saurian’s stomach while it thrashed and slammed about attempting to dislodge him. “Hah! Seems you can’t even squash this insect!” The man jibed the creature even as he watched the magma serpent lung between the beast’s legs and direct upwards like a geyser. It was a moment that Ryu had waited for, dashing further up the beast at the last second as the serpent continued upwards through the beast vertically; Ryu came to rest upon the beast’s head.
DIE!
Tossing its head upwards, even as the serpent redirected to bear down upon the man while he was on the beast’s head; Ryu launched upwards given more momentum to avoid the serpent. “You first!” He spun in the air, slamming his heels down against the ceiling, making a massive crater that broke the foundation of the earth above them, massive stones beginning to fall all around Ryu and bash into both the serpent and the creature it was impaling. Bursting forward with all his strength, blasting a hole in the rock above him, the man rocketed downward and slammed home a fist into the creatures snout…right at the base of the crystal. The intensity of the heat that close blackened his left hand as it connected with the stone; shattering and crushing the saurain’s snout and flesh sending it flying away along with shards of the crystal and uncontrolled magma. This time the beast roared in pain as the crystal tumbled away from its body and slammed into the earth with a piercing clang; leaving a hole in the beast’s body that issued forth a continuous gout of magma. As the beast thrashed about, Ryu held his crippled left arm close to his body, unable to even open his fist any longer and his entire left arm looked like warped, misshapen wax all the way up to his shoulder leaving a stinging throb that sent pain soaring through his body with each beat of his heart.
Trying to keep his head through the agony, Ryu sought to escape the cavern as it fell inward the beast’s thrashing and the serpent it had created had turned into nothing more than inert lava, giving the man time enough to attempt his way up to the entrance to the cavern he’d entered through in the first place. It was made difficult by the slow crumbling of the earth above and near inability to focus his chakra finely enough to keep progressing up the wall without slipping or falling back slightly as well as avoid the now dripping and running liquid earth left by the serpent. With the creature’s screams and panic pushed into the back of his mind, Ryu focused fully upon escape, getting out of this place and getting back to the village; this trip had been great but his curiosity had seemed to cause more problems than anything else.
Just as he managed to get to the rim of the entrance…
He slipped.
Gripping hard with his right hand, he dangled on just his fingers for a moment before he curled his body upwards to grip at the stone with his foot at an angle to try to lever himself upwards. At this angle, he could see the chaos below: The creature that was thrashing about seemed to have shed most of the stone covering it and was oozing magma from everywhere, all of it running towards and pooling around the crystal. For a moment he continued to watch in fascination, but that gave the creature enough time to thunder across and step on the crystal, shattering it by mistake with its great weight. There was a massive explosion that knocked Ryu off the ceiling and sent him tumbling down; a moment expanded into eternity once again as he tried to grasp the rock with his fingers, his heartbeat seemed like the only thing unaffected by the slower time and he knew right then that he was going to die.
He should at least face it with dignity, right? His eyes turned slowly away from his near escape down to the roiling inferno below. The entirety of the cavern could be seen now; the beautiful crystal of the walls dazzled him with the angry light reflecting, making them look like stars winking in and out. At least he would find his death somewhere beautiful, even if he did wind up burning to death; everything balanced out. What he didn’t count on was the rampaging creature swatting him out of the air with the remains of its tail, slamming him against a bare patch of wall creating another crater; the man star stars and his head swam, but he dropped the rest of the way to bare stone above the layer of magma that had filled the area.
For a while, his vision faded and all he could really tell was that his skin was starting to burn, boils and welts coming faster than his body could keep up with; his clothing was nothing more than melted or torched fragments, his hair was all but gone all over his body and long gone on his head. He could smell the flesh, his flesh, cooking and it nauseated him; this wasn’t really how he wanted to die, beautiful location or not. His sight slowly crept back into focus, his eyes burning with determination while the rest of him burned in agony until his nerves begged for release; release that would be easy but he wouldn’t just lay down and take.
Pushing himself upward, it felt as though a rock were on his back with how tired and beaten down he was, but still he rose upwards. Gaining his feet was a monumental victory and even turning to face the wall was an astonishing act; he needed out of here and the only way to go was up. Even as he lifted his right arm and started to ascend the wall, something grabbed hold of his left arm and yanked him back down upon the rise of stone.
No, human. I do not believe you will be going anywhere.
All that was left of the creature now, was part of its head, and left forelimb, laying in a thick puddle of magma around where the crystal had been shattered. The eye was still burning though, still hateful and focused on the man who had invaded its chamber.
You, who disturbed my rest. You, who in your ignorance destroyed the connection to my vessel. Oh no, there will be no escaping from me now.
The voice, it was no longer quite so big, but it still seethed with anger just as thick as it had before; the claw tightening down upon Ryu’s left arm with every word until the talons too began to crumble and magma ooze out across his dead limb, scorching and ruining it beyond recognition.
I do not feel like dying today, human. And quite frankly, though your presence irritates me to NO end. It presents me with an opportunity.
The sneer in the words could be heard even though the creature’s face was long gone and turned to molten slag.
Now. Drink deep of my power. Feel it flow into you; your body shall now become my vessel, and some day…I shall claim it for my…self!
Ryu couldn’t help it, his mind worked on its own imagining the creature’s power and form flowing through his left arm into him. And it happened.
A sound like a massive eruption was the beast’s victory cry, the magma that had once been held together by the stone all around it suddenly spun together and conglomerated around his left arm where the remains of the talons still stuck into his skin. Though he couldn’t feel the skin, his chakra network felt as though the molten earth was tunneling and burrowing into him like an invasive parasite; worming its way through his body on the fastest course to his core. He couldn’t help it anymore, he screamed in agony, fear, and hate while the creature invaded his body tore itself into him and made itself at home.
The roiling magma continued to spin around his limb, but the amount got less and less, noticeably by the moment. It felt as though his body would come apart but a talon whipped out of the spiral and splattered tiny droplets of the molten earth onto his flesh, searing him and biting into his exposed stomach. With the sound of maniacal laughter, the last bit of magma violently imploded being sucked into his body with a massive pull that made his back arch before he flopped about on the stone in a seizure.

The man woke, though his eyes opened and saw nothing but darkness, and the pain he was still in suddenly overwhelmed him once more in his aware state. Crying out, he forced it aside; forced it all away and locked it beneath a mountain of willpower. He didn’t have time to lay around in pain, couldn’t dally here. He had to get out, had to get to the surface…had to get back home.
It took a couple tries, but he managed to climb up the wall and grope about to find the exit, nearly tripping when he ran into his pack that somehow managed to remain hung upon a spike of rock and not fall into the cavern below in the tumult. Simply dragging it behind him, Ryu groped his way blindly out of the cave, following the scent of fresh air and the seductive feeling of cool air against his aching flesh. He could feel the rocks around him cutting him and digging into his flesh, opening more wounds that wouldn’t knit shut quickly. Just a little longer in the darkness before he stumbled out into the ravine, night time seemed so much brighter; the stars and moon nearly blinded him as they bathed him in silver light.
Holding his left hand up as though out of reflex to shield his eyes, a grisly appendage blocked his view: Talons extended from overly long, misshapen fingers as though the knuckles of the digits had swelled up and forced them to bend into a half-fist; small spikes covered his flesh from his wrist to the shoulder between risen plates of what looked like scale-like stone. He stared at the limb that was no longer wholly his own; but instead it was shared with a nightmare, a nightmare he now harbored.
With a bitter frown, he clenched the hand into a fist to test the strength; but he couldn’t feel in that arm anymore, only knew it existed and could function. This was to be his mark, a symbol of the creature he now bore within him, as well as the cruel seal upon his stomach that had left pocked, scarred flesh that looked like obsidian shards embedded into his skin. The naked man stood for a moment, looking at the hand still before dropping it to his side and staring up at the sky; did he live just for this?
Pain once again threatened to overwhelm him, so instead of contemplating the moment, he dressed in the spare clothing he had packed and wrapped the arm up in several rolls of bandages before putting it in a sling. The arm felt heavy while at rest, but it was a weight he would have to learn to bear while he headed for Iwa. His travel was slower this time, Ryu wondered if it was better that he not return to the village now with this creature inside him waiting for a chance to take control; but he couldn’t simply abandon his people just for this. He was strong enough to survive, he would have to be strong enough to carry their suspicions and distrust as well; after all…that’s what wide shoulders are for.

Legends say that long ago, back in the early days of the shinobi world, their existed powerful Demons possessing the power to wreak havoc across the land. As a counter measure to fight these monsters, village's sealed these beasts into the bodies of Human Hosts. Whether these stories hold true or not, this forbidden practice, although frowned upon, is still practiced on a much lesser scale. There exist people who have had the energies of weaker demons and spirits sealed within their body, their body and mind becoming a vessel for the entity's power. The hosts have been known to take on certain characteristics of their inner demons, both mental and physical changes and traits which vary widely. Although one cannot deny the power the host gains from having a demon reside within them, able to draw upon it's power and gain unique affinity to the demon's affinity, their comes a price with all power. From the moment the demon is sealed within the Host, it becomes a battle for control, the demon seeking to grasp as much control as it can over the user...

Information
Prerequisites: Kinjutsu Application, 3 Ability Slots, B Rank

Effects:
- When gaining this kinjutsu, the user may choose any base or advanced element of Ninjutsu to be the affinity of their inner demon. All Ninjutsu of this Element do not require Handseals as the demon bestows unnatural abilities to the user.
- They are treated as having a 'minor' affinity to this element in their base form, and a 'major' affinity in it when in either Demon Cloak form.
- If an Advanced Element is chosen, this element will not count towards their 'Advanced Element' slots.
- While in the Demon Cloak, the user has a chance to not be able to detect friend or foe due to the power of their inner demon. Every attack has a certain percentage chance to cause the Jinchuuriki to attack a random target on the field. This only applies to the effected action, not the rest of the fight.
- Jinchuuriki skills do not require handseals.
- All Jinchuuriki techniques receive Damage/Cp reduction buffs to the user's chosen Element.
- All melee attacks made by the Jinchuuriki use their chosen element's Ninjutsu Accuracy, receiving the chosen element's Damage and Cp buffs and replacing the Melee accuracy/damage buffs.

Note:
- Because of their Inner Demon's Chakra, when any Demon Cloak is activated, any Bloodline and CA Transformation-type technique becomes negated as the user now becomes somewhat possessed by their demon's energies. This does not apply to 'Activated' passives such as Doujutsu or other Core Ability Activated Passives. In addition, No curse seal's may be active during this time as the demon's strength is too powerful to be overridden. Accuracy/Dodge buffs from Jinchuuriki and their Bloodline/CA do not stack beyond +10.
- Unlike the series, this Kinjutsu refers to demons and spirits in general, not Bijuu. While this demon can be made freely, this demon cannot be tailed beast in any way or form. Expect an Auto-denial if you mention any form of Bijuu with this.[/fontsize]

All Jinchuuriki possess great strength, though one would be mistaken if they assumed that their incredible power came without a cost. Though they may be excellent shinobi in their own right, the full potential of their skill is not their own, but a fusion of both themselves and their inner Demon. Through training, a shinobi can learn to draw power from the demon deep within, using it to fuel themselves and granting them energy. At first this can be a very risky move, for simply acknowledging the demon within grants it more power over the user. However, with concentration, the user can learn to draw forth a small amount of the demon's energy without losing themselves. Because this energy is small compared to the demon's full potential, the host retains nearly all control of themselves, and does not seem to display any physical change aside from a visible, glowing aura of chakra.

Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of a host drawing forth power from their Inner Demon is that their chakra becomes a visible aura of energy around them; growing in both speed and size as the user's draws forth more and more strength from their inner Demon. However, one would be a fool to attempt to judge this as a simple aura of energy, for this chakra is so powerful and explosive, that simply coming into contact with it is enough to seriously harm opponents. As if that weren't enough, the Jinchuuriki seems to be able to manipulate this Aura at will to lash out and strike at their targets in a hemispherical explosion often compared to a bomb.

JNSF.jpg

The final form of a Jinchuuriki's power, drawing forth a dark and seemingly endless supply of chakra from their inner demon. In this stage, the user hardly resembles a human, instead appearing as their inner demon, though still human-size. The host has been lost deep within the energies of their demon, gaining almost incomparable strength, but possessing nearly no form of their own rationality. They see no difference between friend or foe, hardly remembering why they fight in the first place, and only desire the destruction of all those around them. In this phase, the host's body rapidly begins to disintegrate from the stress of the natural energy, visibly breaking apart and being replaced by a neon glow of corrosive chakra. They are an avatar of destruction, both to themselves and all others around them.

Story for Seal
Ryu stepped out of the shower room, towel hung about his waist preserving no real modesty since he lived alone; his quite foot falls gently slapped against the hard wood of his home’s floors barely breaking the heavy silence that lived within the walls like an ever lurking roommate. The day’s effort had been washed off, his hair hung behind him only slightly damp now and drying quickly, water was evaporating off the planes and from the valleys of his musculature even quicker with every step he took. Gaining his room while he dragged the fingers of his right hand through his partially tousled hair to smooth the dark, glossy locks out at least a little before he took a comb to them, he set about dressing comfortably for the night in. Hakama cloaked his legs and a vest to match was draped over his shoulders and left to hang open while he eyed the file he used to grind down the points of the spines and talons on his left arm.

It had been a couple days since he spoke with Tayu Kiyoshi when the man had swayed the decision for Ryu to start mastering the beast and showing his arm with pride. It was no easy feat after two years of habitual motions, he always found himself picking up the file just before trying to get some rest and staring at it for moments before putting it back down. In those few days, he’d gone through two bed rolls and three blankets, finding the shredded cloth and fluffy material stuck to the spines and talons here and there. Irritation made him wrap the damn limb up before going to bed but he left it uncovered during the days at least.

Just before he settled down, he picked up a small watering pail that he filled every morning and kept by his door, and stepped through the halls in his home to a small back room that contained a large bay window; the only furniture in it was an aged rocking chair that was settled next to a thistle plant with a scarlet red bulb that was in full bloom despite the season.

Careful not to touch the thorns of the plant, the towering man gently poured water over the stem for a moment, letting the soil soak in the moisture before adding a little bit more. The flower shifted slightly as though being bowed towards him by a slight breeze even though no air stirred the room; he bowed his head in response, setting the watering pail down and easing into the chair beside the flower.

- A year after becoming a Jinchuuriki –

On the far outskirts of Earth Country, Ryu had been sent to a village that had become covered in briars within the span of two days. By all reports, there was no movement in the village and no one had contacted Iwa for assistance; but the incident needed to be investigated regardless. It was a two day run in a caravan train, but sending a single person ahead of time would allow for a perimeter to be cordoned off and the initial investigation started; why they had sent Ryu for that detail, the man wouldn’t ever know. He was hardly the fastest they could have picked but he got there a full day ahead of the rest of the crew.

The reports had said that the village was covered in briars, but it hardly captured the full spectrum of havoc that had been wrought on this place. Vines as thick as his leg had torn through buildings with wickedly pointed thorns longer than his arm impaling furniture and debris; but while that was a sight to behold, he saw no bodies or remains of the people who’d lived here. Pulling out the public survey of this place and flipping through, he noted that the last known population had been nearing 100; no one had come forward as a refugee and any other detail regarding this place had been unknown beyond the fact that a man from a neighboring village had reported the sight on his way by. ”Hrng.”

He wanted to scowl, but that would be unprofessional, he settled for a mask of dour neutrality instead and got to work, setting up posts and unrolling the cordon tape around the entire village. He was no chakra sensor, but his eyes were pretty damn good when it came to marking down the details. As he stood examining the site once the village had been cordoned, he noted that the directionality was going away from the center of the village as though the vines had exploded from a point there. Whole houses were ripped asunder in some spots where more than one of the massive spine bearing vegetation had slammed through; which meant he was going to have to work his way to the center of the village.

Ryu really didn’t know much about the vines, but he took a scraping from one of the nearest tips and dropped it into a solution to try to find any of the common poisons that some of the fauna around the country bore but turned up nothing; he was no medic or botanist so turning up nothing on a general test was good enough for him. Having stalled long enough, the towering man picked his way carefully through the massive briars making small markings in the thorns as he passed with a kunai; the journey would have been somewhat easier if the left arm he’d received from the creature a year back would stop with the burning tingle sensation where it met his shoulder but Ryu did his best to ignore the uncomfortable sensation and pressed onward.

As he waded further into the press of vegetation, the wall of thorns got thicker woven tighter together with thorns closer together than on the outskirts; he found himself hacking through one or two of the things to make a path when no other way showed to be a path of least resistance. After maybe two hours, he broke through a particularly dense weave of the briars where thorns were interlocked and only a finger’s breadth apart from one another and stood in a ring no more than ten feet in diameter where an old man dressed as a shaman sat next to a thistle flower with a blood red bulb in full bloom and dripping with a translucent red nectar dripping from the petals.

“Greetings, young man.” The shaman smiled wearily at him, the voice carrying not only age but a heavy sorrow. Ryu had just stumbled onto a witness and possible victim of the events here. No, he wasn’t a possible victim, Ryu saw a weave of smaller briars wrapped around the man’s crossed legs and reaching up his waist. “Forgive me if I do not rise to greet you, I’ve been snared by this evil while trying to contain the spread.” He coughed and winced at the motion, fresh blood welling up where thorns bit into withered flesh and the flower seemed to throb as the briars reached further upwards until they were cloaking his chest and the man held still once more.

Ryu stepped carefully and started reaching for the thorns. “No! Don’t touch them! You’ll share my fate if you do!” The panic in the shaman’s eyes made Ryu halt in his tracks and his violet-blue eyes narrowed as he followed the criss-cross of vines back to the ground; they were sprouting up nearly a foot from the flower in a ring of what could possibly be stones of piles of dirt. ”How did this come to pass, shaman?” Asking what happened would have been a stupid question, and very obviously answered. The flower caused this, but HOW was the greatest question and once that was solved the why was to follow next.

The trapped man took a careful breath and looked at the flower. “It is an evil thing. A red thistle, or a Blood Rose, is sign of ill fate to come. This fell plant sprouted from the soil there a week ago now; tradition says that the one who is able to pluck the flower from the soil will gain a great strength, but to do so one must suffer the pain of the stem as the thorns on it are the fangs of evil. It always draws the blood of those it touches.” The man shivered slightly as he suppressed a cough that would have the briars crawling higher. “I was to bear witness as our blacksmith, the strongest man in the village, pulled the flower from the earth. But as he pulled, his face became one wracked with pain and terror before these cursed thorns took them.” His eyes went to the bulges beneath the vines as tears welled up from his eyes.

Ryu took a breath and blew it out. Those weren’t rocks or dirt. He looked around the small clearing and saw many lumps large and small, some towering up to six feet, and others at an angle. By the Five, they were all dead. ”I’m sorry for your loss, Shaman.” He knelt and looked at the flower, eyes taking in the detail of the leafy petals and the bulb that had splayed open, the silky petals red layered together and did look quite like a rose, but the thorns covering the surface beneath that gorgeous plant flesh was indeed coated in needle looking thorns half the length of his pinky all the way down to the earth. “Young man, do not attempt to pull the flower. The demon will take you the moment you show pain and you’ll join them in the deathly cage of her embrace. Please.” The shaman was pale, looing blood and he wouldn’t last until the investigation squad got here.

Chewing on the inside of his lip, the flower was the root of this, and if he could manage to help the shaman they would have a witness to explain that this was something out of control of the people here. There would be closure for the dead. He said nothing but wrapped his large hand around the stem and pulled, there was a loud snapping noise as though a line were being drawn suddenly tight and vines as thick as his fingers were suddenly lashed around his arm up to his shoulder and the thorns dug deep into his flesh. He ignored them and kept pulling, his muscles cording and his jaw set in stubborn determination.

So another fool comes to try to end my life. A woman’s voice came from in front of him, as he blinked, he was no longer holding the stem of a flower but a woman’s hand that was dainty in his massive grip, the texture of her skin was supple silk, but he felt the bite of her fingernails in the palm of his hand deep enough to draw blood. His gaze followed the arm up to a woman who stood across from him, her face set in defiance and determination just as much as his own features. Her eyes were a russet red-orange, the same color as her hair and wore a lush green dress that covered healthy, feminine curves. Her skin was unbroken and lent her a healthy glow but for the straining muscles of her arm and legs as she tried pulling away from him. You’ll give in to pain, just as the first oaf did. And all the others when they attempted to remove him from my grip. I will not be plucked by the likes of you, mortal!

Ryu thought that the old man was being figurative when he said demon, apparently there really was something to that claim now. The woman gave a husky laugh of disbelief. That meat sack that calls himself a shaman would call me a demon. You mortals couldn’t tell a spirit from a demon even with the help of the Gods themselves.

Oh by all the Five, she was reading his mind. Her mouth curved into a mocking smirk and tried to surge backwards and caused Ryu to plant his own feet, grinding into the ground and causing it to splinter as his entire body snapped taught. Yes, oaf, I can see your mind. Any spirit can when you commune with them, we need no words to express ourselves your diminutive life would be shattered any other way though.
Pretty cocky for a little girl, he’d been through worse. At the mere flicker of a thought, the battle with the molten creature in the cavern came roaring back in full; every scent, sight, and feeling as though he were reliving it all over again. The memory stunned them both for a moment as the demonic left arm began to burn and tingle at the shoulder once more he snapped into focus and pulled the woman’s hand towards him, there was a tearing noise and she shrieked at him, though her mouth never moved beyond a ferocious snarl. You know pain well! But you will not take me! Her body went taught and her nails dug deeper into his flesh. So you know a little pain! Do you know the hardship it takes to grow?! To flourish and find yourself going to be torn from life by someone else’s whim? NO!

This pain was nothing. He could bear it. He’d lived through what should have killed him several times over, he could pull a plant that wanted to tear his arm off. The spirit’s face became a blank mask, but the tension of her body still pulled just as strongly against him. I see. You’re a man that holds an ocean of determination. But what is it for? You’re just a selfish child in a man’s body. You and every other mortal. You attempt to defy something right up until the moment it defeats you and then you beg, cry, and soil yourself wanting mercy and forgiveness. Oh, did it look like he was about to start crying? Maybe there was a fleck of dust in his eye. After this maybe he’d wash up and take a nice nap too.

The fury in her face returned and her efforts redoubled. You dare to MOCK me! Ryu felt her nails, the thorns, grind through his flesh and all the way to the bone; sending an agonizing sensation all the way up his arm and right to his spine. He set his feet and twisted away from her with all his might, jaw set tight and his violet-blue eyes blazing with determination. He would do this, he’d committed to the effort and he wouldn’t fail! He’d never fail again!

NEVER AGAIN! His memories slammed forward, a day of sorrow that he could do nothing to save an entire class from falling to their death, the failure of being unable to help his father from passing so early; those were times when he could truly do nothing, when he was helpless and powers beyond his control were at work. This? Pulling a simple. Fucking. Plant. He could do this and he’d bear the pain to do it if it meant he could give peace and rest to the villagers. The spirit was forced to watch the memories carved into his spirit, into his indomitable soul. He’d never give up, he would bear this pain and more for the people he was sworn to protect even if he didn’t know them; he’d do even more for those he did care for. Ryu’s calm, stoic mask broke and he snarled right back at the spirit in defiance! The spirit reeled as though she’d been slapped across the face, tears the same color as the nectar of the flower welling up in her eyes. Please. No, I don’t want to die.

Whoa. She wasn’t faking to get him to slip up. He could feel it through their connection, he would be snuffing the life of a spirit bound to this flower if he pulled it up. A bit slow, yes? You didn’t think I’d be willing to fight so hard just for the fun of it do you. Grinding his teeth in frustration, Ryu tried to think furiously while not letting up the tension, but he stopped pulling her closer to him. It made sense, just as he had invaded the molten creature’s home and destroyed it, he was doing the same now. He really was just a lumbering oaf. But he had committed to this, by his own code of honor and everything he was he would follow through and finish what he started. There had to be a way that he wouldn’t destroy her.

Studying him, the nectar flowing down the round cheeks to her delicate chin, she looked at him dubiously. Surely you jest. You knowingly try to rip my life away while mocking me with thoughts of saving me? You’re the most cruel mortal I’ve ever met. Nah, he was just some bumbling oaf. All mortals were like this, remember? She barked a short laugh and shook her head, the russet waves bouncing behind her. What could you possibly do to sustain me? Put me in a pot?

Hey, actually, good idea. The wisdom of a spirit really knew no bounds. What?! No! No, don’t you dare! I’d r- Shut up. He ignored her, closed his eyes and cut her off, he was sick of talking, sick of just standing there. He had one hand wrapped around the flower stem, he knew he did, he could feel the vines in his arm and they had spread along his back and chest. If he could just get his left arm to move!

It jerked and twitched then burst into action, flinging wide from his body and incinerating the bandages and sleeve he’d hidden it in revealing the solid, flat grey of the scales and gleaming obsidian of the spines and talons. As the flames died down he opened his eyes again and stared at the flower, there was no spirit now, just the small dainty flower dribbling nectar down into the wounds on his hands. ”Forgive me.” He felt as though he hadn’t spoken for ages with how dry his throat was, his voice normally smooth and sturdy cracked faintly. With effort, he made the demonic left arm plunge into the soil beneath the flower, talons biting deep into the dry earth as though it were wet clay, and scooping out a massive pile of dirt and all of the flower’s roots.

Just as quickly as they came, the digging into his arm vanished but the injuries left behind were real. The massive briars covering the village vanished as well, dropping debris with a thunderous clatter, revealing the withered corpses of the dead, and freeing the shaman who sat on the ground and sagged to the side in exhaustion. You really meant it. He could hear the voice again, but he saw no apparition of the spirit as he had before. He thought he’d severed the connection between them and stopped the communion though, his brows knit together in confusion as he held the plant closer to his body. You silenced me by closing your mind, and turned your eyes away from me. But we are still connected, my blood flowing into yours. You feed me yet with your life being drawn into my roots. Gruesome, but that would work. His eyes swept around but couldn’t find a pot to put her in, he adjusted his grip and set the clod of dirt on his raised knee while he tore his belt pouch off with his left hand and emptied it out onto the ground before shoving as much of the clod into it as he could and left the flower sticking up from it. So demeaning…this is an embarrassment that I shall never forget. Yeah, well, better than being dead right? To this thought, the spirit had nothing to reply with.

After he set the pouch on a pile of rubble and making sure that it wouldn’t fall or be able to reach the ground below, he started to take his hand from the stem of the flower. Wait! His hand jerked and pulled tighter around the stem, but not of his own choice. ”Let. Go.” He growled out loud at the flower and his hand, narrowing his eyes. In due time. I see that you could have taken the easier path. You could have simply burned the flower, or cut it to shreds. Instead, you used your flesh instead of your spirit, subjected yourself to the bite of my thorns that no other mortal I’ve encountered was willing to bear. Why? Wasn’t it obvious? She could read his thoughts and see all of his pathetically short life. Shouldn’t a spirit be wise and all knowing? He got the sense that the spirit was sneering at him Humor me.

Ryu squinted at the flower for a moment, the trickle of nectar had stopped, but there was still a copious amount still around his hand. ”I guess…I did it for the one who wished the strength to be a man better at his craft. Didn’t think about it much.” He sighed and looked away from the flower at the corpse that had been nearest to the flower, a man who wasn’t quite as tall as Ryu was wilted and mummified from the sapping briars. In life he’d have been of average build but nothing spectacular. I see. You did pull me from the ground, in your own way. You’ll have my gift, mortal. What is your name?

He would like to get to work on arranging the dead to be buried and help the shaman who was sitting up and rubbing a salve over the injuries gained from the briars. ”I’m giving my name. To a flower.” Really? No mere flower, my name is Shinku. I would know the name of the mortal to curse and bless as he grows old. Man this flower was chatty. The thought as he rolled his eyes gave him the sense that the spirit was smirking at him. ”Kazehi Ryu of Iwagakure.”

There was a sort of crackling tension crawling up his arm. As a flower grows and endures with the blessed light of the sun, so too shall you. Life granted to me as a spirit of toil and hardship, the sun giving my vessel the strength to rise and support my strength. May you too know this strength, this curse of pain and hardship; bear it well mortal just as you now do my vessel. Ryu’s back arched and a spike of agony much worse than he’d felt before lanced him between his shoulder blades, digging at his skin as though all the thorns he’d felt before were focusing on one spot and trying to drive entirely through his body. He grunted in surprise and snarled, getting ready to smash the flower with his left hand but as quickly as it had come, the pain dulled to a throb, leaving him panting and shuddering. He couldn’t sense the spirit any more, and all the nectar that had been on his hand was gone the flesh of his hand and arm whole beneath the punctured silk of his kimono. Strange, he could contemplate it later.
Ryu actually felt invigorated, felt the beaming sun on his skin and it put him in a good mood despite the death he was standing in and organizing. He didn’t move the bodies, but he put notes down beside the bodies as he used the survey and shaman to help him identify the dead. Ninety-nine people dead. It was a mess no matter the conclusion. At the end of the day, he sat in his small camp outside the cordon, the shaman not far away sleeping, but fitfully twitching, likely having nightmares about the harrowing ordeal; Ryu contemplated the flower stuffed into his belt pouch. No one was going to believe him, or the shaman for that matter. He sighed, poured some water into the soil around the flower, careful not to touch the thorns again while doing so. Once the earth was damp around the plant, healthily saturated, it seemed to bow to him though there wasn’t a breeze stirring any air.

The reports he was going to have to write, he felt like he should just go write some fiction; maybe that would be better received…

- - -

Ryu took his eyes from the plant with a sigh. It was a memory that made the space between his shoulder blades itch; he had reported that a gas deposit had exploded, killing the villagers and leveling their homes. It was received with suspicious leers and questions about these reported briars which Ryu refuted with the claims that mirages happen in moments of intense heat and the difference in the air with the debris and wreckage should easily have been seen as massive briars. It was acceptable, a more explainable resolution than “a possessed flower did it”. They were shinobi, but really? He wanted to keep his job, not be examined for drugs or mental instability. Even the shaman went along with the story, claiming to have been gathering herbs outside the village and had only just returned the day Ryu had shown up.

He didn’t like it, but the folk of the village got a good burial at least. He’d taken the flower with him when he’d returned home despite the strange looks his fellows gave him, but the Blood Rose was still in full bloom so they couldn’t blame him for taking such a rare beauty home to treasure and lighten the dark work they had come to do. It was ritual for him, water the plant nightly and every so often he would sit and remember the spirit, trying to puzzle out the meaning and her “cursed gift” that she had supposedly granted him. As he stood, the plant shifted, leaves swaying and the bulb rocking back and forth slightly before a dribble of the clear, orange-red nectar seeped out the top of the bulb. ”Yeah. That day was pretty sad, but it turned out alright in the end I guess.” maybe he was cracked, there was a creature sharing his body and he was standing here talking to a flower. He shook his head and laughed at himself. ”Good night.” He picked up the watering pail and quietly exited the room, pausing a moment at the door to look back at the flower before closing it behind him.

Though he couldn’t see her, where the flower sat, the dangerously beautiful spirit was leaning comfortably against the sill, comfortable in her spot while she watched the man leave. She smiled at him and once he was gone looked up at the sky on the other side of the glass. Sleep well…Kazehi Ryu. The stars were simply beautiful tonight.
