What is ANBU?
ANBU are different from village to village. Some see them as the “best of the best” as far as being a shinobi. Some see them as military police who are above the other branches. Leaf is a bit different. ANBU in Konoha are focused on external threats to the village. This is a branch of spies, diplomats, and assassins. Each member is trained for their specific role within the branch, all focused on keeping Konoha safe from outside threats.
What are the ANBU ranks?
The ranks for the ANBU branch in Konoha are as follows:
- Anbu-in-Training (AiT): AiTs are Genin who showed an interest in the ANBU branch and were recruited into it. Their entire job is to learn what the ANBU do, and learn where they would best fit in the branch to excel at their future job.
- ANBU: ANBU are the meat and potatoes of the branch. Each ANBU is placed into a squad, and their entire job is to perform that role to the best of their ability. It is at this rank that they not only get to pick their codename in the branch, but learn the codenames of others. At this rank you're given your ANBU Robe and Mask. While the choice of robes is Dark Green, Midnight Blue, or Jet black; masks can be custom crafted to suit your desires.
- ANBU Captain: The Captains are the managers of the branch. This rank is not given out lightly, and usually only when needed to fill an empty spot. Captains are second only to the Sennin when it comes to authority over the branch. There is one captain for each squad the branch covers, and they treat the ANBU of that role as a team under their supervision. Captains may trade in their robes for custom colored ones.
- Sennin: The Sennin is the highest authority within the branch itself. While they do not require permission to make any changes to the branch, a wise one works with his captains to keep things running smoothly. ANBU Sennin can only be appointed by the Hokage, or if there is no one to appoint one then the Captains can vote on one of their own to be escalated.
How do promotions work? (Updated:18-04-2023)
Being promoted into or within the branch is pretty simple. Unlike most, Konoha's ANBU system isn't big on exams. We often do field promotions and have few requirements.
- AiT: Be at least Genin rank One roleplay thread with an ANBU Captain or the ANBU Sennin expressing an IC interest in the branch. Fulfill all the normal requirements for a Genin
- ANBU: Completion of one mission and one tutoring/class session with a ANBU member that is not an AiT. Completion of a roleplay thread with an ANBU Captain expressing an IC interest in joining one of the divisions. Pass an ANBU Examination
- ANBU Captain:Appointed by branch Sennin only2. Show constant activity inside of the Branch. Be a member of one of the divisions
- -Notes- Sennin discretion for this appointment, requirements can vary.
- ANBU Sennin: Be at least Jounin rank or equivalent IC. Appointed by the Hokage. Required to be put to a vote before Leaf Council and be approved as this is a role requiring leadership, time and dedication on your part in a OOC aspect as well
What are the ANBU squads?
As mentioned previously, ANBU focuses on three main areas, these are assassination, spying, and diplomacy. Each of these has a squad within the branch. A squad is overseen by an ANBU Captain, and has no hard limit on how many ANBU will be in each one. ANBU are placed based partly on their desire, but mainly on their ability. The squads are listed in detail below.
Diplomats
The diplomats are in Zeta Squad. This squad focuses on improving and maintaining good relations with the foreign powers of the world. Members of this squad must be good at talking to people, and will be trained in the fine art of politics and discourse. This is the squad that will be most involved with other villages, with members often being sent out to build friendly relations with them and pave the way for easier work of the other two squads. Any work happening in another shinobi village absolutely must have permission from this squad to proceed.
Inquisitors
The Inquisition squad, or Omega Squad, is focused entirely on finding information. They are the only squad who does work inside and outside of the village on a regular basis. This squad has a great deal of leeway for finding information that could protect Konoha from threats. Kidnapping, torture, and other crimes are seen as an everyday tool to be used by these people. Malleable morals are a must for the people in the Inquisitiors squad. They require permission from the Diplomats to perform any unlawful acts on foreign soil, however.
Assassination Squad
The Assassination squad, or Alpha Squad, is perhaps the most straightforward squad in the branch. Members of this squad have proven their worth in combat, and are tasked with removing threats found by the Inquisitors. While they cannot act in another shinobi village without Diplomatic approval, they can act anywhere else on foreign soil if needed.
Why codenames?
Codenames are an ANBU tradition going back to the beginning of the branch. In the current branch, they serve the purpose of allowing members to talk without revealing their identities to others. Being a spy isn’t much good if everyone knows you are such, after all. Upon reaching ANBU Rank and being placed in a squad, you get to pick your own codename, and learn the codenames of others. If you’re found giving this information out to anyone not of the branch or any AiTs, you will face penalties up to and including execution for betrayal of the village’s safety.
So who leads what?
The current leadership of the branch is as follows:
- Sennin – Keiji
- Diplomacy Squad Captain – NA
- Inquisition Squad Captain – NA
- Assassination Squad Captain – NA
So I still have questions!
Feel free to PM any of the four mentioned above with any questions you have about the branch. If you wish to take ANBU classes/tutoring, or go on an ANBU mission, all of the above are also qualified to run such.
Questions which have been answered:
- ANBU Missions in the sense of promotion is any mission given ICly by an ANBU Captain or the ANBU Sennin. They don't have to mod it, but it does have to be given by them and approved after the fact by them also.
- Once an ANBU Captain has accepted you into their squad, you are automatically assumed to have a Konoha Passport.
