“We thank you for your interest in joining Konoha, the Village Hidden in the Leaf!”
Step One: The Rules
Get acquainted with the rules of NC. You don't need to know them by heart, but knowing where to find them is key! The non-battle rules are located in [THIS FORUM]. Please give them a read, let them sink in, and then proceed to Step Two: Character Creation.
Step Two: Character Creation
It's easy enough to make a character. To illustrate this, we have created a little guide for you to follow. It's located here in [THIS THREAD]. Once you've made your character, proceed to Step Three: Posting the character in the correct forum.
Leaf Character Creation Requirements
Name: Must be of Japanese origin.
Age: Inside Leaf Village, we accept the following ages for certain starting ranks:
- 9 is the minimum age, and 13 is the maximum age for an Academy Student.
- If you don’t feel comfortable playing with a small child, we accept up to 15 years for Genin Ranks.
Physical Description: There is a minimum word count of 100 for this.
Mental Description: There is a minimum word count of 100 for this.
History: There is a minimum word count of 100 for this.
Bloodline/Core Ability: This has a minimum word count of 200.
Simple copy code to use! This is overall the basic use for a character, too.

Tips and or tricks:
- Unsure about a name? Use that for last to fill in, sometimes a name will come to you once you design your character.
- If you are using a Genin, give an example of how they became one.
- Choosing a bloodline or core ability, how does your character use it? What we often say, use the first two of the bloodline already in an application. You didn't unlock it for real, but don't sweat it!
Once the application has been written, you must post it up in the Character Creation board for the Village that you want to join.
Leaf: [THIS FORUM]
Step Four: Begin RP'ing!
Once the application has been accepted, you can begin RPing! A good move would be to go to your village's discussion board, introduce yourself, and then post up your profile, open a training topic, and a dojo topic. In addition, we recommend joining the Discord service. The places to find all the various things would be right here:
Leaf: [THIS FORUM]
Step Five: Start your profile, training, and dojo!
Now that you are properly started up, you can get stronger! Need help with that? Follow this easy guide. Link: Click me
Profile
For Profile: You may design them however you wish, but there are a few key things that must be present at all times. For later, when you have a battle moderator, your profile must always be up to date.
- Vitals. The Vitals are your character's name, age, height, weight- all of the information people would need to properly RP with them and describe them physically. This also includes distinguishing features, background, and a mental description.
- Your whole dojo needs to be in here, along with the stats of your training.
- All your jutsu and their ranks. May these be base, regulars, or kinjutsu.
- Your owned contracts need to be listed.
- Any CRPJ you own and its effects.
Tips and or tricks:
Have 3 posts in your profile. One for the profile you made to create your character, one for your training and dojo, and then one for the contracts. This way, you can easily update them!

Notes, tips, and tricks.
I. What are OOC and IC?
OOC/ooc means “out of character.” When you’re speaking OOC, it means that you’re not making a post for your roleplay; you’re speaking directly to your partner(s). OOC is usually represented in several ways:
((I’m out of character.))
[[I’m out of character.]]
OOC: I’m out of character.
These aren’t the only ways to represent it. Sometimes, people will only use one set of double parentheses at the beginning or end of the sentence. There isn’t a single set way to convey it. As long as the others know that it isn’t a post, anything can work.
Now, IC/ic means “in character,” which is the opposite of OOC. In-character posts are represented by regular paragraphs and should be easy to distinguish from casual OOC chatting.
Always keep in mind that OOC =/= IC. We keep everything separate.
II. No Pressure and OOC obligations.
The reason a Good RPer will not hound you for a reply (a poke every 3-7 days is reasonable, depending on whether you do rapid-fire or weekly replies, not hourly). Nor will they try to pressure you to write a scene or topic (ERP) you are not comfortable with.
And a controversial one…
RP is a hobby that comes secondary to issues that arise in real life (job/family/health). As long as you give notice that you’ll be busy or need a hiatus for whatever reason, a good RP partner should/be understanding and supportive of you being away.
However, this does not mean they are obligated to wait for your return to continue the story. Being a Good RPer also means understanding that your partner is free to pick up another story/partner instead if you are unable to meet their story needs due to time constraints.
III. Fair Reply Post Order: First to reply, first to get a response.
Fairness. “Replying with the muse” will only leave your other partners (who go without a timely reply) feeling left out or as if your story doesn’t matter as much to them.
The last thing I’d want any of my partners to feel is that they need to compete for my attention. Each storyline I write with my partners is equally amazing and irreplaceable, and they should never question that.
IV. Including a "Hook" to Respond To:
To keep the roleplay flowing and give your partner something to react to. In other words, I tend to have a loose "structure" to my posts, which roughly follows this pattern: a bit of dialogue or some sort of reaction at the outset, to whatever my partner's character(s) did or said, then maybe a bit of backtracking, reacting to stuff in their post, or just some of my character's internal thoughts/observations, descriptions of the surroundings, etc. Then, at the end, I always include some action or dialogue/question that will spark a response.
I sometimes think of it as a tennis analogy of "bouncing the ball back," so that my partner has something to react to/respond to immediately and therefore keep the roleplay moving along. It doesn't always follow that structure- if the scene is action-oriented or dialogue-heavy, my posts will be shorter, but I still like to have some sort of good "hook" at the end and not just serve the proverbial "ball" out of the court or into the net.
V. "Yes, And" Mentality:
To allow the flow of ideas and creativity. To me, roleplay is a mix of writing and improv, and one of the key rules of improv is that "yes, and" mentality of going with whatever your partner pitches, then building on it. So this can apply to both the actual writing and the OOC brainstorming process. A lot of the best ideas I've had with my partner just come from us riffing off each other while we chat. Sometimes (lots of times), we'll make jokes about our characters or stuff they could get up to, and often, it'll work its way into the roleplay down the line. The best partners I've had were really good about building off anything I pitched them (and vice versa), and if the idea maybe wasn't quite what they had in mind, they'd at least offer an alternative. A "no" with no suggestions or alternatives offered just tends to grind things to a screeching halt.
VI. Positive Reinforcement:
Reason - Keep the OOC dialogue going, general encouragement. This one is more of a bonus, really, but it was a trend I developed with one particular partner (my current and ongoing one), and something I've grown to appreciate. We're in different time zones, like 6 hours apart, so often when one of us posts, it's while the other's asleep. But she got into a habit of reacting OOC to whatever I'd written, citing her favorite parts and generally just offering positive feedback. So I started doing the same, and it's fun to read that bit of encouragement right off the bat. We'd both generally offer to tweak/edit anything that's not working, but we've rarely ever had to. Mostly it's just a little bit of instant gratification, and I suppose that can be very encouraging after you labor over a post for however long, to know you're not churning out crap! Like having a little pep squad of one to cheer you along!
VII. Respect each other’s characters.
Someone’s original character is very important to them. They have created their person, animal, etc., that they relate to in some way. Chances are, they feel very protective of that character as well. It may have some of their personality traits or physical characteristics, or relate to them in some other manner. There are instances in which your character might not get along with theirs, and that’s okay - you should both understand that it’s not a personal attack; it’s just how they would realistically interact.
But wait, what if there’s something about their character that rubs you the wrong way? Is their character annoying? Overpowered? Rude to the point of offensive?
If it’s a small detail that only makes you frown when you see it (such as their appearance or parts of dialogue), you should probably leave it be. Those are the types of “flaws” we see in real people every day and we put up with them. Not every character is going to be absolutely to your liking. The creator made them that way for a reason. As for one you find annoying, the same idea applies: if it doesn’t make you irrationally angry, you can tolerate it… or perhaps use your character to help balance out their personality (in a healthy way - try not to be too forceful). You may find that your partner’s overzealous OC can become very good friends with your calm OC. They may even help each other develop and mature.
An overpowered character is more difficult to deal with. There is nothing wrong with granting them special abilities, even something like telepathy, as long as both roleplayers are aware of these abilities and discuss how much and how often they can be used. But when that goes out of control (or turns into godmodding), it’s okay to speak up. Do not insult them, but kindly tell them that you aren’t comfortable with the way they’re using their abilities. If they persist, then it may be time to take a break… and if it just gets worse, then it may be time to find a new roleplay partner.
Always remain in conversation with your roleplay partner.
Playing a villain:
Text roleplaying is two or more people creating entirely fictional situations for entertainment. Villainous characters are fun even if we don’t agree with what they’re doing, and would never do those things in real life. Anyone looking to interact with a villain needs to understand that they’re going to see sensitive/problematic content and that content does not represent the villain’s mun in any way.
Definitions:
Type of topics: said:Open threads are free for any roleplayer to join.
Private threads are intended for specific roleplayers who were invited to that thread.
Mission threads are moderated threads that are usually composed of a few players, as well as a mission moderator. Depending on the mission and your village's rules, some missions are invitation-only only while others simply require you to meet certain prerequisites to join.
Class threads are moderated threads run by a teacher, and usually these classes are open to Students.
Event threads are threads where something special is happening. There are a lot of different rules regarding events, often event rules will be stated in the event thread or there will be an announcement concerning the event in your community.
definitions said:Bunnying
A synonym for powerplay, arising from Tumblr RPGs.
Cheesing
Forcing the plotted or expected outcome of roleplay by invoking an unmentioned fact. An example of this is having a planning thread where a player agrees to roleplay a fight with you and agrees to lose. At the end of the fight, you decide to poison, steal something, or maim their character, but you failed to mention this when you worked out the thread, and the other player agreed to take the loss.
Cheesy
Used to describe a particular action or set of actions.
Godmode
Generally not used in forum roleplay, though characters may be referred to as “in god mode” in rare instances.
Godmoder
A roleplayer or roleplay character engaging in metagaming, powerplaying, or godmodding.
Godmoding
The act of godmodding.
Metagamer
One who has metagamed or metagames.
Metagaming
The use of out-of-character knowledge in character.
Mun
It refers to the player or individual behind a character. The term “mun” contrasts the player in real life with the often fantastical or extraordinary characters they control.
Munchkin
Derogatory. A roleplayer who plays a non-competitive game in an aggressively competitive manner. In our setting, an example of this would be a player who builds a character just for fighting, nothing else.
Muse
A muse is the character the mun is portraying in their roleplays. Muses can be fictional characters, original characters, or interpretations of historical/mythological figures (which may sometimes count as “original” characters). Muses can be pretty much anything
Powerplay
Godmodding by controlling another roleplayer’s character without permission.
Powerplayer
A roleplayer who exerts powerplay.
Powerplaying
The act of controlling another character in active roleplay.
Retcon
The rescinding of a plot or in-character occurrence; roleplayers acting as if a plot never occurred.
Retconning
The act of rescinding a plot, or otherwise acting as if it did not exist.
