Shizuko couldn't really believe her luck. A cat had gone missing! Well, perhaps luck wasn't the best way to think of it she figured as she thought more about it. After all, the lady who owned that cat was devestated, and the cat itself wasn't used to being lost and without constant care. But still, a missing cat meant that Shizuko could make some pocket money which she sorely needed to by more of her favorite food: ramen. Ramen in all its forms was what she lived off of. Understandable too. She was nine years old and even heating water for a cup of instant ramen would be considered dangerous for a girl her age in a normal household. So since she was actually able to make the dinner herself, it quickly became her favorite dish! But despite the kindness of the older ladies in her area, she still had to get some money by doing simple tasks for some people in the neighbourhood that didn't want to go the village and pay a bigger fee than they had to pay Shizuko.
She was thinking about what flavors of ramen she'd get later that day as she was patrolling the area keeping an eye out for the almost pure white cat. It had a lot of fur and it was silky soft, which always made Shizuko purr alongside the cat everytime she petted it. Whiskerson was its name. A cute name thought Shizuko as she suddenly heard the faint sound of a bell. The sound was very similar to the sound of the bell around Whiskerson's neck, tied neatly on the cute pink ribbon. As Shizuko's mind wandered again she almost forgot about catching the cat as the sound of the bell once more brought her back into reality. She looked in the direction of the bell. A fence. A wooden fence. She tiled her head slightly and sighed exasperated. She'd have to climb that fence again. Just a week earlier had she been forced to do so during another request from one of the ladies in the area, and it had cost her one of her few good skirts. After all, before that she only owned 3, and now she were down to 2. One she refused to use until she was in the academy. She wanted to look good on her first day after all. She shook her train of thought away as she reached the fence and peeked into a small hole in the fence, seeing the cat on the other side, inside the storage area for one of the local stores. Without a doubt had the kitty walked on the fence and fell down, now unable to get back up. With another sigh Shizuko began climbing, doing her best to avoid tearing any part of her outfit up while also trying to avoid getting any splinters.
It took her while, but eventually she made it up on the fence. She looked around to make sure no one saw her so she didn't get in trouble. After all, not everyone in the area liked or trusted her. Once she was certain she wasn't being watched by someone looking to rat her out, she carefully jumped down from the fence and quietly motioned for the kitty to calm down. Since she had a good relationship with the cat before, it quickly warmed up to her and calmed down, letting Shizuko pick him up. It was easier to climb up from the inside of the fence, before there were planks placed diagonally to keep it steady, which meant she could use that for support. It was a big life saver since one of her arms were effectively tied up holding the cat. She placed one foot on the diagonal plank, heaved herself up and grabbed the top of the fence with her free arm. Then she simply walked up the diagonal plank carefully until she could sit on the top of the face and carefully drop down on the other side.
Now all she had to do was return the cat. Luckily it wasn't very far, although it took her a while to get there because she was playing with the cat the entire way. Once she came back, the lady was so relieved. She smiled and cheered and hugged Shizuko really tight for finding Whiskerson for her. The redheaded girl smiled herself, loving to be appreciated since it was such a rare occasion for her. The lady disappeared into her house then came back with some money. She handed Shizuko a handful of money. Originally she was meant to be given around a thousand yen, but the lady had been so happy to see her kitty again, that she gave Shizuko fifty percent more. Now Shizuko were happy and hurried off to the store to buy herself some delicious ramen and perhaps a treat since she had more money than she had planned for.
Mission clear!
