Name: Maki Sōma
Age: 9
Gender: Male
Sex: Male
Rank: Academy Student
General Description:
Standing slightly shorter than most other kids his age, Sōma has a narrow frame that is just beginning to show the results of his early academy fitness and conditioning. His dark mid-length hair naturally rests in a relaxed style and his wide eyes glow with a Tawny hue against his mildly pale skin. His normal choice of clothing is casual but practical, usually consisting of short cargo pants and a hooded jacket.
While Sōma may appear smaller than some of his peers, the magnitude of his work ethic and drive makes up for his lack of physical size. Never one to back away from any challenge, his desire to push himself can sometimes come across as arrogance and has got him into trouble on more than one occasion. However, his goal is not to be the center of attention or show off in front of others. The encouragement of his parents has instilled within him a desire to be the best he can be and so he pushes himself hard, sometimes to a fault.
Overall, Sōma is a kind person who looks out for others and is not afraid to step in if he thinks someone needs help. He can sometimes become extremely fixated on a goal, to the point of becoming distant to others, but it soon passes.
History:
If you were to ask him, Sōma would say his childhood was going great. He has loving parents who are kind and supportive, he gets on well with his twin sister and their older brother, and generally he is happy. What he couldn't tell you is that his start in life was much less straightforward than he knew. As a young child, both Sōma and his sister were rejected as infants by their birth family. Their current family, who already had a son of their own, rescued them before moving to Kumogakure where they opened a small shop and hoped to give the pair a better chance in life.
As he was growing up, Sōma and his family lived a comfortable life in a small area above their shop. They weren't wealthy by any stretch but all of their needs were met. Once he had reached the required age, Sōma's brother joined the academy and began training as a Shinobi. Sōma looked up to his brother and took great interest in everything he was doing, he couldn't wait until he was also old enough to join, and so it came as no surprise when he asked to be signed up as soon as he was eligible.
It was around this time when something slightly strange started to happen, on multiple occasions Sōma found himself on the losing end of incidents involving birds. Minor things such as a bird swooping down and stealing food from his hand, or following and squawking at him relentlessly. Things like that happen to most people from time to time, but it seemed to be a much more regular occurrence for him. The frequency of these incidents freaked him out and fostered a dislike towards birds, to the point where seeing them perched on a nearby tree would make him uneasy, even a little frightened. He never did anything to provoke them, yet it just seemed like birds as a collective had some irrational problem with him.
His avian assailants aside, Sōma was steadily moving forward on his path to graduating from the academy, growing stronger and smarter each day. He looked forward to earning the right to join his brother in the ranks of the Shinobi, providing safety for his own family as well as all the others that called Kumogakure home.
