"I would like to state my appraisal of this decision for the record."
Mikaboshi's disapproval slithered through Katsuo's body like a shiver running down his spin. The young man didn't need the ancient creature which was boarding inside his head to say anything else about the decision he was making -- they both knew it was a bad idea. But still, Mikaboshi was going to whether Katsuo decided to let him or not.
"Go ahead." Katsuo told Mikaboshi, stating his message out-loud instead of using the internal connection they had to "send" it directly to Mikaboshi. Katsuo only used that mental connection when he had to as it was much easier for him to simply speak with his voice. Mikaboshi saw and heard anything he did or said anyway so it might as well been directly solely at the ancient given that there wasn't likely another soul within miles from where they'd journeyed.
Once more standing upon the huge cairn of rocks which he, Sousuke and two mercenary ninja named Shiruko Makoto and Mizushima Nanami had brought low the Diamond Maelstrom by battling and defeating the resurrected corpse of Katsuo's uncle Daisuke, Katsuo thumbed over the onyx-colored ring that Mikaboshi had confiscated from Kaito over in his hand.
"This is not a good decision."
"Noted." He responded, examining the ring further. It was a simple piece but made of a strange black metal and set with a single bright yellow gemstone called a citrine that... well. It didn't glow necessarily but it certainly thrummed with power.
According to Mikaboshi -- and Kaito -- the stone set within the ring contained a restrained entity that was a member of one of the legendary Spirit Contracts. Kaito described the ring as a conduit which siphoned power away from that entity and granted it to the wearer of the ring and Mikaboshi had intended to leverage that quality of the ring for his own use but Katsuo wasn't about that sort of power. Power obtained by enslaving another creature -- even a spirit creature -- was not something that he desired. Instead, he intended to release the creature and see if he could convince it to fight alongside him in return for it's release. If he could not then at least he would have the clear conscience of having released a tortured spirit.
Wrapping the ring within a closed fist, Katsuo focused his willpower on the ring causing spiders of electric power to run down his arm and leap from his hand in arcing bolts. After a few moments of gathering strength, Katsuo tightened his grip suddenly and crushed the ring in his fist, bending the iron of the band and shattering the gem set into it. Opening his hand, Katsuo was... underwhelmed. Perhaps destroying the ring had destroyed the entity contained within or sent it home entirely. Letting the obliterated remains of the ring and gem fall from his hand to the stone behind him, Katsuo scowled and shook his head in disappointment.
"At last, room to stretch!" Remarked a light-sounding voice from behind Katsuo causing him to whirl on the spot and bring his hands up in preparation to defend himself.
As he turned around, Katsuo beheld the strange entity that had apparently apparated into space behind him. She was... perhaps about five feet tall at the most, at least a full foot shorter than Katsuo causing him to have to look down at her, and she was absolutely gorgeous. With short, pale blonde hair and porcelain skin, the young woman stretched her arms into the air and pushed her bosom outwards -- which Katsuo could not help but take notice of given the neckline of the indigo and black dress she wore -- before apparently just now becoming aware of Katsuo, her right eye open as she regarded him.
"Well do not stand there gaping at Us, fool. Name yourself."
"Uh, Katsuo. Sunahoshi Katsuo." Katsuo stammered. This was not what he had been expecting. He could feel in the back of his mind Mikaboshi scratching for Katsuo to let his presence in so that he could communicate something but Katsuo pushed back against him for the moment. He wanted a moment to meet this creature without Mikaboshi telling him to push her to the ground and lay claim to her.
"Sunahoshi." She repeated out loud in fragmented syllables as if sampling each piece of his name and weighing the taste of it for a moment before moving on to the next one. "We are pleased to be released from the confines of Our prison however it would not do for a king to be in the debt of another and certainly not a human. We would grant you a single boon, human. Name it and it shall be so if within Our power to grant."
"I'm sorry, king?" Katsuo blinked, still surprised that what had come out of the ring was a pretty young woman who looked about as fearsome as a teddy bear. But as he questioned her kingship, the indignant look that the young woman snapped at him caused Katsuo to instinctively take a step backwards out of a primal sense of self-preservation. Suddenly every fight or flight instinct in his body was screaming at him to run away and finally the clawing presence of Mikaboshi in the back of his mind managed to fight it's way through.
"Beware you idiot this is a being far beyond either of us right now!"
The look of outrage suddenly vanished from the young woman's features, replaced by a curious raised eyebrow as she stepped forward... and was suddenly standing directly in front of Katsuo with her fingers lightly grasping his chin with an otherworldly strength that was completely unexpected from a woman of her slight frame. She pulled his face down to her level and she turned it back and forth for a moment before releasing him and smiling broadly as though she'd just heard a very funny joke.
"Is that you in there, Old Shadow? Did you get bound to a human body? How amusing." She announced, laughing out loud. There was no good-heartedness in the way she laughed. It was not a kind and jovial laughter but the laugh of one who found amusement at the expense of another. She clearly did not think much of Mikaboshi for her to mock him so and that made Katsuo suddenly feel very uncomfortable about the situation he was in. "The Great Black Wolf in a monkey's body. You always did have a soft spot for them but We never thought you would grow so deviant as to bond with one."
The regal-looking woman was overcome with rolling laughter which left Katsuo feeling very much like he was missing some very important information. It seemed like Mikaboshi recognized the young woman and she definitely recognized him as she called him by two of the old names by which he had once been known during the era of time known as the Old World before the rise of humanity in the Wind Country. Indeed she seemed comfortable with laughing at the expense of an ancient lord and even though Mikaboshi had by no means been the greatest of their number an ancient lord was no minor creature to be trifled with. If she were willing to laugh so heartily at the expense of Mikaboshi, she clearly had no fear of the potential consequences of such an act... which could only hold dire implications.
"What's the story here Bats, how does she know you?" He sent to Mikaboshi quickly as the young woman continued to laugh, making joke after joke at Mikaboshi's expense. Katsuo expected that under normal circumstances Mikaboshi would be furiously pushing him to defend his pride and attack her but he could sense nothing from the ancient lord but an overwhelming desire to withdraw.
"That is Sesshosuna-Oh, Son of Primus. She is--"
It only took Mikaboshi saying the name for Katsuo to recognize who she was. It was an old name, one that had long since passed into myth and legend much like the great ancient lords had, but Katsuo had once studied many of the hunting manuals left over from the Old World by generations of Rangers and knew many of those old names which most of had been consumed by antiquity. Sesshosuna-Oh was a beast of legend among beasts of legend. A Daiyoukai with the form of a sandworm of terrible size and power, she was notable for being a rival to the terrifying Barnyx for dominion of the desert dunes. Many of her legends spoke of a strange magic about her being which allowed her to perform feats such as shapeshifting and casting of dangerous curses. It was once said that she had been destroyed by the blade of an ancient hero but it seemed as if those legends had somehow exaggerated her demise. Swallowing hard and taking another step backwards, Katsuo considered for a moment how far he could make it from where he was standing before Sesshosuna-Oh might react to his flight but she'd already proven that she was extremely fast and extremely strong. To attempt to flee this situation was a gamble -- if he ran, Sesshosuna-Oh might be encouraged to chase him by the nature of the predator in her. Wiping tears from her eyes, Sesshosuna-Oh's laughing fit came to a slow end as she turned to regard Katsuo with a demanding presence sneaking back into her eyes and countenance.
"Very well, that is enough mirth for this day. Speak your boon, liberator so that We may go." Demanded Sesshosuna-Oh, her voice carrying with it the demand of a divine being. Katsuo and Mikaboshi were kings but this creature stood a step above that even if she identified herself as one. "We are eager to return to Our kingdom and survey what has changed."
Still, despite the peril he found himself in Katsuo also found that he could not convince himself to simply flee this situation. He had broken the binding ring for a purpose and unleashed a creature that legend said was catastrophe personified. It was too late to regret his choice but he might as well attempt what he'd come here for in the first place given that she was offering him a boon.
"Great Sesshosuna-Oh, I request the contract of your service." Katsuo announced after a moment of feigning consideration. The legends said that Sesshosuna-Oh was a Daiyoukai -- a Youkai spirit of noble birth -- which meant that she was a creature of extraordinary power. The idea of calling a living catastrophe to his side as an ally was not one that Katsuo particularly enjoyed but he would need every possible advantage to topple the Wind Daimyo's regime.
"You ask much. It is within Our power to grant but We would know if you are competent enough to contract with Us. We do not tolerate weak disciples." The intensity in Sesshosuna-Oh's eyes was stunning. Her height combined with her body type and beauty were almost enough to distract from the creature that he knew her to be but her eyes were something else entirely. There could be no mistaking her eyes for those of a human being. "Is this still your desire?"
Katsuo didn't respond but he nodded his head in agreement to which Sesshosuna-Oh grinned a wicked smile before flickering from sight. She'd backed all the way to the edge far from Katsuo where she stood at the very lip of the cairn for a moment before giving Katsuo a look that said "Get ready" and falling backwards off of the cliffside. Surprised that she would simply jump from the cliff, Katsuo began to make his way to the edge but stopped dead as a cacophonous roar split the wind which whipped around him. The cairn shook and trembled as Sesshosuna-Oh's true form emerged from the sand below, coiled around the large stone formation like a tremendous serpent and looming over the cairn. Her size alone cast a deep black shadow over the peak of the stone formation that Katsuo stood upon, blocking which would have been intimidating on it's own but Sesshosuna-Oh's physical appearance was just as much so if not more. A series of writhing appendages twisted around the perimeter of her head and her "face" for lack of a better term was a gaping maw of ash-filled breath and gnashing teeth. Once more Sesshosuna-Oh opened her mouth and bellowed a tremendous roar at Katsuo in what he assumed was a challenge. Though Mikaboshi said nothing to him, Katsuo could once more feel another wave of disapproval wash over him from the ancient lord who clearly disagreed with Katsuo's decision to accept the sandworm-youkai's challenge.
Wasting no time as he did not wish to keep the notoriously temperamental sandworm-youkai waiting on him, Katsuo squared his stance and focused his chakra causing the air around him to begin to heat up. Lightning sprang from his shoulders and ran down his limbs and body into the rock beneath him as he hummed a low note to focus his mind on the awakening of his energy. Extending his right arm, Katsuo created the image of his sword in his mind's eye and the lightning obliged him -- gathering into the slim, curved form of Tatsumasa in the grip of his fingers with it's blade glowing a bright gold and gilded lightning leaping from it into the air around him. Raising the sword above his head, Katsuo stepped forward as the aura surrounding his body magnified -- first doubling, then tripling in magnitude -- and swung the blade forward unleashing a howling blitz of voltaic power towards the looming form of Sesshosuna-Oh who made no attempt or move to dodge the attack. The blast of lightning slammed into the waiting jaws of the creature, causing it to wince slightly as it weathered through the storm of Katsuo's fury, then subsided and was gone leaving behind Sesshosuna-Oh's smoking onyx carapace which crackled with galvanic aftershocks from the attack. Releasing a heavy breath that sent a hard gust of wind across the surface of the plateau, Sesshosuna-Oh stayed still for a moment before lowering her head back to the edge of the cliff... and then transforming back into the young blonde-haired girl. The obsidian chitin of her plated body paled as the color faded away and crumbled into sand behind her as her humanoid form strode forth from the disintegrating remains of her "body" left behind her. Unsure of what to make of this, Katsuo did not relax his guard as Sesshosuna-Oh drew closer to him but she seemed unintimidated by his guarded stance. Raising her finger, Sesshosuna-Oh touched the tip of her index finger against the crackling flat of Tatsumasa's blade and pushed the sword away from her with a look on her face that very clearly said "Bitch, please".
"Relax yourself human, had We wished to take your life We would not have deigned to once more take this form." She admonished, fully pushing Tatsumasa away from her as she drew closer to him. "You are powerful for your kind. Not the most powerful We have seen but We are suitably impressed by the strength of your bite."
By now Katsuo had released his grip on Tatsumasa, allowing the blade to disappear into the air around him and relaxed his aura causing the heat in the immediate air around him to subside even though it did not seem to bother Sesshosuna-Oh in the slightest. In fact, it she had not even seemed to notice the difference in temperature. Reaching up once more to Katsuo with both hands, Sesshosuna-Oh grasped his head with each of her hands and pulled her down to his level once more before placing her lips against his. In that moment, Katsuo felt every inch of his body go rigid as a tiny amount of Sesshosuna-Oh's power flowed into him and she took from him a tiny amount of his power. Pressing her lips into his, Katsuo dared not attempt to pull away for risk of angering the creature that stood before him but each passing moment that they remained in contact the sensation of her power flowing into him grew in intensity before it felt like his body might literally split apart and she finally released him by withdrawing from the kiss. Releasing the side of his head away from her grasp Sesshosuna-Oh placed her right hand upon Katsuo's chest and pushed him away from her with casual indifference as her lips crackled slightly with a remaining vestige of the electrical power that had been flowing through Katsuo's body only moments before as reached up. Looking away from Katsuo, Sesshosuna-Oh reached up and touched an index finger to the side of her lower lip immediately silencing the lightning on the surface of her lips before turning away from him entirely and beginning to walk back towards the far edge of the plateau.
"The contract is sealed. If you call Us, We will answer. Take care not to call Us without cause, Master Sunahoshi. We will be most displeased with you if you waste Our time." She cautioned as she walked away from him, her voice just as loud as it had been when she stood directly in front of him despite the distance between them and the howl of the wind over the top of the plateau. Finally she reached the edge of the cliffside and then with another hop -- she was gone.
Realizing that he'd been holding his breath ever since Sesshosuna-Oh had broken the kiss with him, Katsuo sputtered and gulped down frantic breaths as the enormity of what had just happened hit him. Not only had he released a very ancient and very dangerous desert spirit from captivity, he had impressed her enough for her to grant him membership into the Beast Contract that she represented. From the radio silence he was experiencing from Mikaboshi, Katsuo assumed that the ancient lord was enjoying his own stunned silence while he absorbed the events that had just transpired. Blowing a deep sigh, Katsuo waggled his fingers and stretched his limbs to shake the bizarre shocking feeling that had run through his nervous system when she'd kissed him. It was strange being on the receiving end of that sensation; was that how it felt when other people touched his electrically charged skin? It wasn't a particularly comfortable feeling... but then again it hadn't been all together unpleasant. The kiss had certainly been nice. Allowing himself a confident grin, Katsuo decided to grant himself a "glass half-full" perspective as he began to make his way towards the outcropping that he'd used to climb up to the top of the plateau to make his way down from the cliff before a thought hit him.
"Hey, weren't we supposed to sign a thing or something?" He sent silently to Mikaboshi. All of the stories about Beast Contracts said something about a contract. Like a big scroll or something.
An exasperated sigh bouncing around within Katsuo's head was Mikaboshi's only answer.
