Kei pulled the white wrappings tight over his arm-guards, satisfied that they were concealed. He'd been chosen for an important mission. Someone was dealing a new type of drug patch in inner Maruishi. He glanced at the dossier on his cot, supposedly the patches temporarily granted the user powers similar to forbidden curse seals. "Some side effects exhibited are erratic behavior, delusions, violent outbursts, physical and chakra coil damage, and addiction... I'll have to be careful." The job was simple enough, gain the trust of a small inner Maruishian street gang and identify their dealer. He hoped this mission wouldn't have any unnecessary complications.
Not long after, he was out on the streets of inner Maruishi dressed as a common thug, deep hood concealing most of his face. He knew where a few of the gang members usually hung out. Most of the gang members were a few years older than him, but that wouldn't be a problem. Part of the reason Kei was selected for this mission was because he was a relatively young native-Maruishian. He was pretty sure he'd be able to gain their trust ut there was always the chance things would go wrong. He'd have to stick to his cover and improvise the rest. He couldn't afford to make mistakes. If he got out as a snitch it was pretty much over.
Kei turned down an alleyway and spied his targets. Two teenagers were spray-painting the wall of the alleyway. He glanced at their work, they didn't completely suck. "Your technique's a bit sloppy" he said bemusedly. One of them cursed as the other got up and slammed Kei's back against the alley and pulled a knife. The smirk never left Kei's face as he held his hands up in a gesture of being unarmed. "Who the hell are you" Agressive-san demanded. Kei eyed the knife, trying to act more nervous than he actually was. I guess the art of conversation really is dead. The other guy got up eyeing him as he was pressed against the wall by Agressive-san. "You cool?" He asked suspiciously. Would I be talking to you if I wasn't? Kei was slammed against the wall again with a warning: "Don't play around." Thank you Agressive-san. "Let him go." Kei nodded in appreciation as he was released before straightening his jacket.
"What's your name?" Kei finished straightening his hood. "Jin" He answered, giving his alias. "Well Jin, you think you could do better?" Kei grinned and held out his hand for the can of spray-paint. He was handed it with a shrug. He took a chance to examine the graffiti again. Anti-shinobi sentiment, he'd really have to watch his back around this crowd. The previous artist had been holding the can too close, causing the paint to run, looked like his hands were also unsteady. Kei's technique was a marked improvment as he put some finishing touches on the graffiti. He'd make sure one of his superiors knew where it was so that it could be cleaned off at a time when it wouldn't blow Kei's cover. Not bad Jin... So what can we do for you?
"More like what I can do for you." "You want in? What makes you think we need guys?" "He doesn't got what it takes anyway Hiro." Kei put on an offended face. Oh so you know me now? Hiro made a "calm down" gesture at the two of them. We'll let Koharu decide if he's got what it takes. Meet us here after dark. We'll figure it out then. Hiro scrawled something on a scrap of paper before handing it to Kei. He took it with a nod and discreetly exited the alley.
A few hours later, Kei made his way to location specified. It looked deserted, he really hoped he hadn't screwed up already. Yo, it's Jin. Were they not there yet, he couldn't really tell with the dim lighting? He heard a sound from behind him and managed to ducked under a punch aimed at the back of his head. He swept the legs from under his attacker before jumping back only to collide with someone else from behind. He launched a quick elbow before breaking contact. Kei was surrounded by at least eight guys. He was getting jumped! One of them rushed him, Kei ducked his blow before landing a blow on his ribcage. He spun around blocking another blow and throwing the attacker to the ground. His eyes darted around until they fell on someone Kei thought he recognized. Was that Aggressive-san? Was this some kind of initiation? Crap, either way he couldn't outright win this fight with his cover intact, he definitely couldn't use any ninjutsu. He continued to fight his attackers, purposefully letting a few more blows than normal through. Still he was outnumbered at least eight to one and these guys hit hard. If they didn't let up soon he'd have to do something.
Enough, that's enough. A voice called, breaking up the brawl. Kei shoved the last guy off him, exaggerating his breathing for effect and wiping some blood off his split lip. You fight like a cornered animal, I like it. The name's Koharu. The taller teen held out a hand. Kei grasped it in a brief handshake. So Jin, I hear you want to join our little family. Well I think you've got what it takes.
...
Kei managed to get himself accepted within the gang, doing small tasks to earn their trust. It had been tough but so far Kei had been able to rapidly gain favor within the gang. A few weeks after his initiation he was sitting with a couple of the gang members when Koharu spoke up. "Jin, you know what this is?" Koharu was holding up a plastic wrapper that contained a slip of paper with three concentric lines on it. Everyone in the room's eyes were instantly drawn to it, their gazes seemed almost hungry. This might be Kei's chance. "Uhm... A fake tattoo?" Koharu laughed, "Not quite, it's our secret weapon. It makes you one-hundred times stronger. Stronger than even a shinobi. We've got some business to settle with some upstarts steppin' on our territory. You're one of the best fighters we've got and I want you there when we teach them a lesson. Can I trust you."
Kei nodded a bit nervously. "You know you can." Kei promised. Good, you're gonna go with Hiro to pick out your first patch. They come in all sorts of flavors. You'll love 'em."
They approached the dealer casually, striking up a normal conversation to remain inconspicuous. "Jin" introduced himself and after a few seconds they were in business. Kei chose one of the patches and handed over some yen. Simple, except not at all. They walked away with a casual "later, we'll keep in touch." His mission was complete, but he had a feeling this was not over.
