Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

The stadium was packed, the murmur of the crowd was like a rumbling, disorganized roar from every direction. It should not surprise anyone that a competition that pitted the world's strongest against each other would attract so much attention. There were a number of samurais guarding the fighter's entryway, apparently a few challengers attempted to start the competition a few hours early or so that was what one of the chattier sentinels claimed. The people of Kurosawa seemed accommodating enough, you were given comfortable living arrangements for the weeks you would spend in Tea Country and meals were delivered to your door promptly at 0600, 1200 and 1800 each day if you ate them or not. The people even seemed excited, even if it was a bit over the top at times. Both of you would have been approached for an autograph several times, hopefully you obliged at least a few. They would scream and carry on that you touched their pen and that they would treasure it forever. Awk-ward...

Perhaps this was what it was like to be e celebrity. The flash of cameras wherever you went and the sudden need for complete strangers to share your personal space. Rest might not have been particularly 'restful' for some, last night a girl would knock on your door, claiming she was sent to 'show you a good time before the big day.' For those that let her in, you would have a good time ...for the rest of the night. You might have an extra spring in your step, but you would be a bit tired. Apparently she knew how to perform clone ninjutsu as well. Oh boy... She would also be gone by the time you awoke, your wallet would also be missing. Damn... She was still worth every penny.

Regardless of how you spent the evening before -- be it asleep or the night of your life, the big day has finally come. It was the day of the tournament and the air was abuzz! Someone was waiting for you when you opened the hotel room door. "Kaminae Hideki" a young man who appeared to be in his early twenties would announce before he stated your full, legal name. He would wait for an affirmation before he would pull himself away from the wall he was resting against and announce that he would guide you to the Hisashī Zenshōsen Arena, there was a separate entrance for the fighters. Beyond that his answers would be one to two word answers or simple directions such as 'this way.' He would guide you through the maze-like streets, they were fairly easy to get turned around in but that was not the problem as you might already know, it was the civilians and their apparent interest in you. A random middle aged guy would yell out your name, declaring his love for you. Maybe someday you would love him back, just not right then. Hideki seemed to be rather proficient in clearing the crowd his his glare, beyond a few distant proclamations of their affections none accosted you with hugs, kisses, 'trinkets of luck' or an attempt at a manly arm wrestling competition.

You would be led around the arena. From the outside the arena was rather imposing, there were four statues with their backs towards you that appeared to be looking down into the arena. The walls were rather high, three hundred feet, perhaps more by your best estimation. The grey stone had something etched into it, into every single brick. If Hideki is asked about the bricks, he would simply shrug his shoulders. He either did not know, did not care or had no intention of sharing. You would be led to an unmarked door that was flanked by a pair of guards, each wore the regalia of a samurai. They would look over at Hideki and then part, allowing entry without a word. Apparently this private hall was well-guarded, another pair of samurais would eye you cautiously as you entered the hall. The hall was long and well lit with overhead, but you would see some rubble about mid way down a five hundred foot corridor. You could also smell smoke. You would notice a hole in the wall with some smoke trailing off as well as the carapaces of well over a hundred ...locusts? "We had a disqualification this morning, the first fighters ran into each other about an hour ago. They apparently knew each other. Something about smelling like elderberries and..." your escort shook their head. "And farting." He would pick up the pace ever so slightly, "which is why we are staggering the rest of you a bit better." His explanation was fairly basic but that was all that you were going to be getting out of him. In fact, his right arm appears to be burnt. His long-sleeved shirt and casual attire made him look more like a messenger than a fighter, but perhaps he was something more.

You would be led to a private locker room, your name on the door. You might recognize a few of the other names as well, fellow compatriots from your village or some famed shinobi from abroad. You would be summoned a few hours later, in the mean time you would be left to your devices -- eat, sleep, watch TV, call your wife on a headset, pray... [Yes, pick whatever amenities you want in the room] The same man would knock on your door, "it is time" he would announce solemnly as if he was taking you to your death. He would lead you to the door, it would be sealed shut. "The door will open at 12:00" he would note as he pointed at a clock, you had a few more minutes left. The sound of the ticking clock was deafening and the time would seem to pass slowly despite it being only a few minutes but the doors would eventually unlock and with a trumpet fanfare as well as confetti you would be queued to make an entrance. Half the show was about the spectacle. The other half... let's call it 'fighting.'

Notes:
 • A Sand shinobi would recognize the language on the bricks to be vaguely Runic Terran but they would not be able to read what it says.
 • A Leaf shinobi would be familiar with samurais from the incident in Fire Country but would be able to recognize their armor as 'different.' Even if these samurais are associated with the Fire Country incident years ago, the regalia has changed drastically and you suspect that the armor might have some sort of augmenting properties.

Re: Okayama Roku VS Maki [Event - Fight]

Frontline

The trip was uneventful, which was for the best. While he surmised most of the other participants would arrive by ship, From Konoha it was a quick trip over land if you felt like it. True, a ship across the inlet would have worked as well, but he wanted to feel the country more. He missed the free roaming he’d been doing for the years between his mother’s death and his return to Konoha. He’d spent the days leading up to this one honing his skills. Hours alone with his blade and his new guest. Testing the limits of his stolen abilities and of his inherited ones. He had a much better grasp of what he was capable of now, but still far from perfect knowledge of his own abilities.

Last night was interesting, to say the least. Alcohol was not in absence, but also not in abundance. Enough to be social. Enough to enjoy the party happening at the bar in celebration of the tournament. Not enough to be completely blindsided when people recognized him as a combatant. Not enough to forget who the women in his bed when he woke up were, either. These people certainly showed their appreciation for their preferred fighter. Maki left them there and went to the gym to warm up and loosen his muscles up. Upon reaching his room after a shower, he would be accosted by one of the staff of this thing.

He still wanted to know what the hell was being planned here. No one hosted a tournament in the shinobi world and invited all the reigning powers without some hidden agenda. But Leaf was protected, which was all that concerned him. If Tea tried to launch a surprise attack while the best fighters were away, they would find their edge blunted rather quickly.

Hideki introduced himself in a businesslike manner, listing his own name before repeating Maki’s. Maki toweled off his brown hair and tossed the towel into the room, nodding. This man didn’t look like someone who was up for games, and the burning around one sleeve was enough of a clue for Maki that the other had likely already had an unpleasant day. ”Well if you’re showing the way, going to need a moment.” The Konoha native steps into the room and shuts the door. Several whistles sound and a few gaps as he changes, side eyeing the women and wondering when they’d leave. If they’d leave. He had a hunch that if he won today there’d be more in there. He wasn’t particularly randy, but it had been a while.

”Lead on.” Maki was in his fighting gear, now. It began with a black shirt, so tight as to be form fitting on his upper torso and short of sleeve. Over that was a red jacket that went from shoulder to halfway down his torso before ending abruptly where his ribs were. It had several symbols upon it which on closer look were symbols for the village of Konohagakure. Over the longer sleeves were red han kote that provided minor protection of his forearms. Under this were pants that were as black as the shirt, topped by red haidate that would provide similar protection of his thighs. He had black combat boots on, with red suneate that covered his shins. Completing the ensemble were the weapons at his side. Each appeared to be a katana, and one had a parrying ring built into the hilt. Something that was rarely seen.

He was just as sparse of tongue as his guide, but the people pressing in on them made the trek rather loud and annoying. People trying to sell him potions of strength, or good luck charms, or themselves. One guy declared his undying love for Maki, which led the Captain to writing down a headset frequency and instructions on how to contact him by it. The frequency was one that Takeshi used most often, so that should play out well. He ignored the people fighting to get the information as he follows Hideki on.

High walls met him, and bricks with scribing upon them. Each brick was scribed such, but Maki sensed no hostile will from the building itself. They pass some samurai, armed and armored like Maki himself was. The appearance of them would give him pause as his vision swam red. The hatred surged, his hand dropping to the sword at his side before he controls himself. These were not the Daimyo’s men. They had nothing to do with his mother’s death. Maki takes a breath to steady himself before following the guide in. ”Indeed, the old elderberries and a hamster insult. Interesting it’s been altered into a fart. The classic worked on being so asinine that the other person would attack you due to not knowing just how badly they were insulted.” He makes a mental note of the disqualification. Singular. That meant someone was getting a free pass to round 2. If a few more of those happened then the tournament would be much less appealing.

They arrive at his locker room, and once more Maki is left to his own devices. He stretches, making sure his muscles were loose once more. Then he sits and works on control over his partner. Finally, a knock sounds, breaking the meditation. Maki opens the door to once more see Hideki. Wordlessly, he follows the other to yet another room, and waits there as the clock winds up to noon. Finally, the door springs open and confetti and music blast out. Maki figured the people wanted a show. With a few seals, the confetti spirals around him, and he steps into sight of the cheering fans as the confetti whirls around him quickly before flying high into the air and blasting apart as if a bomb had gone off, showering the stands.

He stands at the ready, feet evenly apart and his face dominated by a confident smirk. He was ready.

Re: Okayama Roku VS Maki [Event - Fight]

The young man named Hideki, who'd arrived to escort Yatamaru, must not have been given a full briefing as to who exactly he was dealing with. He must have been waiting for Yatamaru to leave his hotel room for a long time before finally deciding to knock. Not once, not twice, or even three times, but four full attempts were made to ruse the room's inhabitant, and not one produced so much as a response. When he forcibly entered into the room, seeing nothing but wreckage from the days of partying, debauchery, and rampant "fan-servicing", it quickly became clear why: Oda Yatamaru was not in his intended hotel room.

Search as he may, Hideki would not find the Sunan competitor. The "good time" woman promptly left the room, grumbling something about intrusions and a scarcity of unattended wallets, leaving Hideki to disassemble the various pieces laying around the room:

A single spare set of clothes. Seventeen ash trays, each filled completely with half-spent cigarettes. Various empty liquor bottles, arranged curiously into the shape of Konoha's leaf symbol. A notebook, filled with weird sketches of grids, routes, and notes. An open window.

Hideki may search high and low in this hotel building, but Yatamaru would be nowhere in sight. Suddenly, a transmission came through the guide's headset. He groaned, finally having solved the mystery of the missing mischief-maker. To the Arena, he went, to chase down Suna's wayward warrior. He avoided the crowds of people who had gathered below — all of whom would be disappointed to realize they wouldn't get to see their favorite contender this morning — instead taking a shortcut that only inhabitants to this land would know. He heard his quarry well before he saw him.

"Hey, samurai fuckhead, I'm talking to you! Let me in, I'm supposed to be fighting in there! Didn't anyone tell you who I am? Say something you mute, deaf, slimey little..."

Hideki let out a small cough to announce his arrival. Spinning around faster than a kid on a serious sugar high, Yatamaru's look of desperate exasperation and confusion melted into a polite bow. "Oh! Why, hello there!" If Hideki was observant he'd notice the sour smell of alcohol and cigarettes on the contestant's breath. "Do you know how to get in here? I came by a bit early to place my bets, but it seems the management has done a piss poor job of informing these guards who they're supposed to, and not supposed to, be letting in." The venom in his voice was quite apparent, but the guards didn't seem to care. They wouldn't move until Hideki gave them a wordless nod, and even then they seemed to do it begrudgingly — for some reason, Yatamaru's hour long semi-drunken ranting and arguing at them hadn't done much in the way of making a pleasant first impression.

As they walked the halls, Yatamaru let out a long whistle of approval. Reverberations and echos alerted everyone to their presence. Running his hands against the smooth gray stone as they walked, Yatamaru let his fingertips trace the ancient letters. They seemed vaguely familiar. "Quite the interesting stone work you have here," Yatamaru would state, expecting no response in return. His other hand reached for something in his pocket, which he didn't reveal to his guide. His hand seemed to turn in his pocket. "Quite interesting indeed..."

Even more interesting was the remnants of the previous battle. Blasted stone, dead insects, and a disqualification? If only those damned samurai hadn't been so uptight, maybe he could have gained some valuable intel — the feeling passed quickly, however, as Yatamaru noticed his "guide's" singed sleeve. "They, huh?" His voice sounded skeptical. "I'm sure they must be excited to be moving onto the next round. Perhaps I'll get a chance to see just how good they are?" Not even a blink on Hideki's part. That was to be expected, though.

Yatamaru didn't need to look at the names etched into the placards on the doors to the rooms, instead heading straight for his own locker and promptly locking the door, since he already knew who he would be facing for this round of the fight. Using this time for further preparation made no sense to the Sunan puppeteer. Rather, properly relaxing himself before the fight began was paramount; that was why, as his first course of action, he decided to invade the liquor cabinet. Next was to empty his last pack of cigs, and then polish everything off with some more drinks. He'd even had enough time to get his mangy and stained button up white shirt, and brown corduroy slacks washed and pressed for him. He had to look sharp for his fight, after all.

When Hideki returned, Yatamaru's smile was wider than ever before. Of yeah, he was ready. Don't mind the slight stumbling, he was in the exact zone he needed to be in. Through the hallway, out the doors, and through the burst of confetti he went. The crowd, the screams, the attention...Yatamaru could get used to this. Then his eyes found his opponent, and everything else melted away.

"Maki, of Konohagakure?"

Yatamaru pulled something out of his pocket, a small glittering emerald from the looks of it, and began to turn the stone over in his hands. As he did, his eyes glazed slightly. "Height: five foot and ten inches. Weight: one hundred and ninety five pounds — give or take a few beers. Age: twenty five. Eye color: brown; however, accounts of various other shades have been documented. Reasons for conflicting data: unknown. Spent the last few days drinking, training, and preparing. Training indicates short bursts of power, not suited for drawn out combat. Information of note: arrived to Tea Country by foot from Konoha, indicating a tendency for unusual methodologies." Focus returned to his eyes. A thin, mischievous grin, spread across the Sunan's face. He only stumbled a little bit as he got into a fighting position. He must have slipped the emerald back into his pocket at some point, as there seemed to be nothing in his hands.

"You're quite the mystery, in general, my friend. Most don't go to such lengths to hide their history." Chittering and rattling filled the air, unnatural and mechanical sounding. Yatamaru didn't show it, but he was literally shaking with excitement underneath his unconventional wardrobe. "Show me what you're made of, Maki. Hold nothing back. I want to feel the power of Konoha."

Round Note(s):
-Exact rolls for this round are available upon request by the participants and any auditors.
-
How it's written, I'm saying that the 2% from Onmyou Warding is a blend of both types used in the Magatama Barrier. Meaning that that 2% is just a second barrier that if activated off of Magatama Barrier, will work like the following . . .
Maga blocks Nin and Tai, tai portion is broken through and breaks through the second layer as well. Once the first layer of Nin is broken, then there is no second layer to block it, because the second layer was used up already. This is based off of the wording of a singular usage of barrier and a person would in effect be receiving barrier(s), plural, if they got 2% separately for both types of damage blocked.

Dev is free to review this at any point.
-Concerning the next round, please, please, please, please, please . . . list your maintains and their respective cost. The first rounds stuff wasn't sent wrong in the least but , but this is just a reminder for when you send in round 2 stuff.
-As always, I’m not perfect, if you see something, please let me know.

When his foe finally showed their face, Maki’s smirk gets a bit more planted. The guy was so rank of booze that he could smell him from here. If his opponent was too drunk to act, he would easily win. And he would be a bit angry that Sand sent someone so incompetent as to drink their way to a loss. But then the other looks at him, and the focus Maki sees there makes that thought vanish quickly. This Yatamaru seemed to know a bit about him. Including his actions of recent. Apparently he had a stalker. As the signal to start goes off, Maki had to get in one last, quick jab.

”Really? You’re going to go that way? That’s got to be the creepiest fucking way I’ve seen to start our first date.”

As Yatamaru slips into a fighting stance, figures out what to do. No one except Yuki and Takeshi knew of what he could do. Sadly, it seemed that was going to go to the wayside if he wanted to win this. There would be no holding back. And that meant not only would members of Sand know what to look from him in the future, the entire world would. Worse, members of Leaf would. But he didn’t hesitate to respond to the alarm with panache. A whistle splits the air, loud enough to be heard over the roar of the fans. Maki let the sound ride the winds, a melody forming around his opponent’s connection to the ethereal realm. A sense in his mind let him know it took effect, and he began to smile.

The smile vanishes as Yatamaru cancels out the genjutsu. Apparently he wasn’t as drunk as Maki thought. The air around his opponent seemed to shimmer, and indeed Maki’s next whistle has no effect as a barrier of some sort blocks it off. While Yatamaru preps a puppet for attack, Maki considers his options. He didn’t like puppet users, they were often too weak without those toys. That barrier had to go, however. Maki grins and whistles yet a third time. This time the whistle not only lingers, but a choral chant seems to be just out of range of hearing as the winds rip around him. An aqueous ball forms in hand and he launches it at his foe. He watches as it hits the barrier and simply shatters past, slamming into his opponent with most of its momentum left.

The sense of victory was short lived. The barrier apparently did a good job of concentrating Yatamaru’s alcohol fumes, because they came pouring out and assaulted Maki’s senses, leaving him coughing and unable to do much as that damned puppet rushes in to attack him. He finally bats it away and steps back a few paces to get some fresh air. It was here that he would notice he was bleeding, a fact that brought a frown to his face.

”I have to say, you’re not acting half as drunk as you smell. And boy do you reek.”

With a deep breath, he prepares to continue the assault.

There's an adage, as old as time itself, that warns against judging books by their covers. Despite its common usage, few people seemed to take the lesson to heart.

Yatamaru recognized that smug smile anywhere. That's the face his enemies made when they saw him fight for the first time; a mix of disbelief, embarrassment on their opponent's behalf, and the satisfaction of knowing that their victory was practically assured against such a hopeless drunk. Hell, he'd even had opponents refuse to fight him, because they thought it wouldn't be honorable or some stupid bullshit like that — Yatamaru didn't work that way, and had never understood people that did. There was victory, and there was defeat. The means were flexible; the result was not.

Yatamaru's method was simply different than others'. If it happened to lower his opponents' guard in the process, then so be it.

"I'm offended! I could have made this date way creepier, and you decide to get all weirded out from some basic info? Shit, man, haven't you ever had a background check done on you? I haven't even begun to go into your blood type, your most embarrassing childhood events, or even your preferred sexual positions! You've gotta give me something to work with here, these are just my icebreakers!"

Yatamaru didn't have half that information, but Maki didn't need to know that. All Maki needed to do was get weirded out by it. Weirded out leads to distracted. Distracted leads to mistakes. Mistakes lead to Yatamaru's victory. Quips and one-liners; all of it was meant to redirect attention away from the real game being played. Yatamaru liked to play these sorts of odd games with his opponents — his favorite part was when they realized how drastically they had underestimated him. That "oh fuck" moment was always so priceless. He practically lived for that shit.

Yatamaru stumbled back and forth like the drunk he was, his puppet body beginning to crackle with electrical energy, as he prepared for his coming assault. He wasn't the only one preparing, though. His opponent let out a low whistle, which Yatamaru thought was kind of cute. Were the two of them going to do a song and dance number now? It wasn't until he felt his muscles begin to spasm that he realized something was wrong; naturally, because he didn't have any muscles! This was a Genjutsu, one that he himself knew as well, designed by someone who didn't know of Yatamaru's particular body chemistry. Resisting such a meager illusion was child's play to the veteran ANBU.

When the smile dropped from Maki's face, Yatamaru nearly squealed in pleasure. "AHH! There it is! That's the face I wanted to see!" Unable to control himself, he let out a drunken, garbled, laugh. Full throated and obscene, you'd think he'd gone fully insane; that is, if you weren't convinced already. "Didn't expect that shit, did ya buddy? Thought you could pull a fast one on me, huh?" Yatamaru would soon be speeding past Maki, straight into the next round.

The intense fumes produced by his alcoholic tendencies seemed to be doing their job. Mixing with his chakra, they formed a powerful barrier that would protect the drunkard from many different kinds of attacks. With that in place, Yatamaru could move onto the main event: his automated puppet assault. With his right hand he clicked a spot on his left forearm, revealing a small hollowed out compartment. If Maki didn't realize he was less than human by now, this would surely tip him off. Within his forearm was a wound up scroll, which the puppeteer deftly unfurled, to reveal many different seals within its pearly white pages. A bit of chakra, and a puff of smoke later, and the man had brought forth the first of his newest line of puppets: model "X-zero-L-zero-TL," codenamed "the slayer." And for good reason, too.

"Fine, if you won't show me the strength of Konoha, allow me to show you the strength of Sunagakure." The puppet began to move, but not a single chakra thread was connected to it. This was a puppet that didn't need a puppeteer, fueled by the same electrical energy that flowed through Yatamaru's body, and programmed to carry out its master's specific orders. "Don't blink, you might miss it."

More whistling, and finally his opponent managed to break through the barrier of booze he'd erected. Took him long enough. He was in for a nasty shock, however, as the pungent fumes assaulted the man's olfactory nerves, practically burning away all the nose hairs left in his nostrils. In the split second that Maki lowered his guard, X0L0TL struck him with an electrified barrage that seemed to draw a fair amount of blood. "I told you not to blink, man! Here, let me help clean the wax out of your ears..." Just to add insult to injury, the drunk stumbled to the side and kicked off with his twisting momentum — the result was a kick flying straight for his opponent's head. It wasn't very forceful; it was more about disrespecting him, than anything. Falling flat on his face, Yatamaru may have done more to harm his own image than anything. Totally worth it, though.

"Trust me," he mumbled as he slowly tried to pull himself back off the ground, "I'm way drunker-er than I smell." He laughed at his own joke, now in a hunched over crouching position. "Still not going to keep me from whooping your ass, though, Leafie-punk." He began to summon another puppet as he stood up, ready for what might come next. If he had blood, it'd be boiling right about now. How long had it been since he'd enjoyed a fight like this? With an ecstatic grin plastered all over his face, the puppeteer kept going. He'd keep going until either his opponent lay unconscious, or he did.

And not from the booze, either. That wouldn't count.

Maki stepped back quickly as his asshole opponent kicked him in the face, and began speaking once more. Turning his head to the side, he spits a glob of blood to the ground and gives a soft growl. He was not a fan of that one, nor of the guy’s sudden desire to make things rather personal. Professional shit talk was one thing, but moving on to the village level insults drew a line.

”Alright. Let’s see how you like it when the gloves come off.”

With another whistle, Maki could feel his technique take hold on the other, grinning as the man suddenly seems unable to truly see where he is. His use of seals shows he tried something, but the fact that nothing changed just left the Captain smirking a bit more. As clones of his opponent appears, Maki is once more attacked by one of the puppets, the first one. Several blows land on him and he backs away from it, curious how it was able to attack him without problem. Another whistle and the puppets are revealed once more, but he could tell he’d wasted a useful technique there.

”Well, I’m going to guess right now you’re experiencing a lot of bad thoughts about me. Let me help you out. I’m not going to let any of them come true. But a quick question since you seem to be a puppet yourself. Why wouldn't you change out that fucked up face for something better looking?”

Then Yatamaru forms a mirror in the sky. Shards rain down upon the field, but thankfully he still isn’t sure who is who and ends up hurting himself in his confusion. ”Well, that sucked. Want to try again?” His distraction of glee brings in another swift pain as that one puppet hits him again, and Maki raises a brow in curiosity at this. Something was going on there. With a shrug, he begins to whistle. Once more the wind whips around his form as an ominous chant seems to rise through the sound of his whistling.

This one looked quite different. The wind formed into it and when it slammed into the barrier, breaking through it and once more unleashing that wave of fumes. This time he was ready and it didn’t seem as rank. But he was sure his opponent didn’t like that wake up call of being slapped in the face with a wind shuriken either.

”Man, you’re not doing too hot. What’s the deal with this one puppet? I don’t think it likes me. Guess I’ll fix that now.”

As soon as he speaks, Maki is startled to see his foe try to punch himself in the face. Somehow he dodged. Then he pulled a behind sneak attack on the back of his own head and the resounding hit made a sound that even Maki could hear from this distance. It sounded like something broke. The Konoha Captain begins to laugh. "Hey, are you okay over there?"

Another adage comes to mind: be careful what you wish for. For Yatamaru, it seemed that lesson was going to be taught in spades.

Yatamaru had prepared a brilliant plan of attack. He was expecting his opponent to be left reeling, unable to find out where Yatamaru had disappeared to, as his attacks helplessly floundered and struck at targets that weren't there. It would all be thanks to the abilities of another of his puppets: model "N-U-one-T," code-named "the empty," for the rather odd abilities its body possessed. In life, this puppet had been the vessel for a criminal well versed in the art of nothingness — a means of fighting which promoted the cancellation of an opponent's abilities, rather than an accentuation of one's own skills. Yatamaru had seen great promise in such an ability and had taken the man's life for himself. He'd planned to negate his opponent's field of play, by obfuscating the true identity, and location, of Yatamaru's body. Puppet Clones, Mirror Element techniques, and poisonous clouds of gas were all but assured to send Maki's brain reeling from confusion.

Then the lights went out. "What the fuck?" was all Yatamaru managed to say when the Genjutsu took hold. He knew it was a Genjutsu, too, because his opponent had done a poor job of concealing its use. 'No problem,' the puppeteer thought to himself, 'I'll just disrupt his chakra flow and be done with it. It's just a Genjutsu, after all.'

Then he hit his own automaton. His chakra wasn't obeying him and the growing darkness in his field of vision was only getting worse. His eyes grew wide with disbelief as he struggled to grasp the reality of the situation.

"What the fuck did you do to me, you Leafie-punk?" Yatamaru's voice was filled with malice, frustration, anger, and above all surprise. Never, not once in his life, had he met a man so proficient in the illusory arts. It was screwing up everything: his plans, his pride, and above all his reputation. He was being mocked, in front of the whole world, with Sunagakure's honor on the line. This was a grievous offence. This dishonor demanded blood. But, what was Yatamaru going to do about it?

He laughed. Not just laughed; he cackled in utter delight!

"YOU! I like you! What a thrill! What a fight! What a fucking rush!" Surely, the Sunan Puppet had gone insane. "I haven't had a fight like this in a long time. You surprised me, and totally flipped it all back on me. Good shit, man, good shit!"

The anger in his eyes had been replaced by manic glee. Like a junkie who'd just gotten his fix, Yatamaru's spirits seemed to have been revitalized — in fact, they seemed to have been bolstered far past what Maki had seen previously. Yatamaru's flip had been switched, strained, and finally had broken.

"What, you don't like this lovable face?" He giggled, his grin wider and more twisted than could reasonably be expected. "I think it looks good on me. Certainly better than you're going to look once I've paid you back for this wonderful little show~"

He was acting on pure instinct, even though the Genjutsu still had him in its clutches. The call to war was so strong he didn't even reach for more of the booze he'd brought with him. Normally the little flask in his pocket should have been far more drained than it was — if anything, it was a testament to his opponent's strength. "I was wrong about you, Maki of Konohagakure. You fight well, and with vigor. I acknowledge you." Another chuckle escaped his lips. "What I wouldn't give to make you into the finest of my puppets! Won't you let me give you that honor?!"

Well, he certainly seemed to be unhappy with things. Maki simply grins as his opponent continues trying to rid himself of the affliction, managing to, at one point, try to help Maki himself out with a refreshing feeling that caused the Konoha shinobi to laugh heartily. ”Well, what this Leafie-punk did to you is make you unable to process information properly. I must say, it’s rather entertaining on my end, but enough of that. Wanna see something cool? Assuming you could see, which I don’t think you can right now.” The man clad in samurai armor seemed quite happy with how things were turning out here.

Then Yatamaru was laughing, a sound that made Maki pause. This guy was entirely too into this fight, treating it like a session in bed, almost. He was taking some sort of sick pleasure and Maki wasn’t very pleased with that one. His lips draw into a thin line. He was here to fight, not make friends. ”You want to do what to me?” His arm comes out to his side in a signal-salute motion. As if on cue, the air beside him begins to twist and roil, almost boiling under the power of what was coming.

What comes next was the patch of air seeming to finally bend inward, before shattering into a form. It was far too large to be human. Standing at twelve feet in height, the figure wore solid black plate armor from head to toe. The helmet was a similar void in color, but the eye visor was simply a twisted red color, as if blood was poured into it. Smoke flowed from every seam in the armor as if the thing inside were on fire. Thick and black, it smelled sickeningly sweet.

”Make this a puppet.”

His own shadow. His link to the ethereal realm, brought to form. It had protected him once before, and now he was well enough versed in it to…not control it no, but guide it. And then it whistles. A whistle like none ever heard before. From within the helmet comes a gurgling roar of sound that is less a jaunty tune and more a rabid beast in bloodlust. And even as it stops, that sound echoes around the stadium, creating its own tune of horrid melodies.

His opponent forms seals, to seemingly no effect, and the thing gives another beastial screech that causes the air infront of Yatamaru to shape into a palm of pressure and slam into him. And then everything went to shit. Yatamaru apparently needed that hit to reorient himself, because suddenly he aimed something at Maki that had his stomach trying to come out of his mouth. Even his focused mind couldn’t handle that as he falls to his knees to turn out the food he’d eaten the night before, he could feel his hold on his opponent’s mind slip away.

Another scream from his ally causes another burst of air to slam into Yatamaru, but the other man didn’t seem to mind. Indeed, the attacks were nothing. They were the setup. As Maki feels his opponent place a horrid seal upon him, he reaches out for his ankle to grip. ”Not….done….yet.” Even as Yatamaru merges with a puppet, Maki was planning his triumphant smirk.

Once more the thing screeches. This screech seemed to merge with the echoing screams of the abyss that had been spiraling around them since it came forth. And with each surround sound of screaming it renewed its vigor, the noise a deafening assault upon his foe. He lets his grin turn feral as the jutsu his foe had placed upon him is negated, and the sound even forces the merging with his puppet to be undone. Maki rises, wincing as even he is caused internal damage to his psyche from the horrible attack.

Then it’s at his side, a glowing hand placed on his gut and stemming the flow of blood from that area. And Maki’s brown eyes, now gold, are focused entirely on the man before him.

”You went and undid all the setup work I did. That wasn’t very nice of you. Now I have to do it all over again. Come out of that little….shield of yours and let’s try this again.” Beside him, the armored figure gives a rumbling sound like the growl of a large beast.

Yatamaru could do nothing more than continue to struggle against the horrid Genjutsu that had been thrust upon him. For some reason, his efforts to dispel it with conventional methods were proving ineffective — no doubt, this was part of the man's strategy. He wasn't dealing with any normal shinobi.

While Yatamaru struggled, blindly, to remove his affliction, the man seemed to take his victory in stride. Monologuing a tad, Yatamaru couldn't help but feel a twinge of annoyance at the man's perceived superiority. It was true that he'd gotten the better of the puppeteer, but a cheap tactic was nothing to get so enamored with. Yatamaru was no saint when it came to combat, but stratagems like this were a bit too distasteful. Even to him, there were limits.

"I'd love to see something 'cool,' right after I get rid of this annoying affliction." But Maki wasn't going to wait. A series of whistles signaled the start of his opponent's counterattack, their melodious tunes underscored by an unearthly chorus of wailing; if Yatamaru wanted to have a chance, he'd have to get lucky.

Sure enough, the drunk still had some luck left in him.

A burst of magnetic chakra had landed on his opponent. He could feel the foreign chakra in his body disperse, and with it the return of his eyesight. The Sunan Puppet was treated to a most curious sight: an ethereal knight. made of what seemed to be smoke and pure energy. "And I thought my abilities were weird," he quipped, hiding his inner curiosity and hesitation at the odd sight. He hadn't encountered such a power before — for a man whose job is was to be well informed, this unsettled him greatly. Still, it wouldn't be enough to dissuade his confidence. Rather, the uncertainty only made this fight more fun. He could review the data later, when he was basking in his victory.

The construct whistled, its unearthly call the apparent source of the attacks he was enduring. The wind, his native element, seemed to be betraying him at this moment. He braced himself and scoffed in frustration as he felt its force stripping away his concentration. All around him, his efforts were being overturned. He gritted his teeth, cursing the Konoha shinobi's tactics.

"You took the words right out of my mouth. You're supposed to be dripping red right now!" All around him, another barrier of alcoholic fumes began to form. There was still much of this fight left, and the puppeteer could spare no chances for his opponent to get inside his head again. "That's okay, though. I'll get to enjoy ripping you apart again..."

The games were over. Of that, Maki felt both he and this Yatamaru finally agreed. They had had their fun, but now it was time to get serious. And as his opponent was soon to find, Maki’s serious was a very lethal issue to have to deal with.

His opponent tries to do something, but seemed to still be disoriented from the chimes that had gone off all around them. That suited him quite well. He nods, and the armored giant begins to once more give that otherworldly screech of pain and despair. It rips at the air as it does so, and seems to rend the very fabric of reality itself. A tear in the world opens, revealing a glimpse of the cosmos that can be seen through it. But the stars were not any of this world. And through this tear, several of those stars seems to fly out at his foe. As the rip in the world fades, those orbs of energy slam into the barrier.

Seven of them hit that damned barrier, but it was no match and soon crumbles under the otherworldly assault. The three which make it untouched are too fast for even a trained shinobi to deal with properly, and as they hit his foe, the persona screams in ecstatic agony. Through this, Maki did not lose sight of the threats around him, and once the puppet attacks, he was ready. It’s hits slamming into the log he’d prepared beforehand for such an occasion.

As he reappears in a puff of smoke, once more that unearthly howl sounds out. The air crackles with energy as it begins to swirl before Yatamaru, blades of wind ripping out and slashing into his not-quite-human form. It wasn’t with much surprise that he saw Yatamaru rush through the attack and come in swinging. Maki wasn’t able to dodge too well, and ended up with a lot of blood coming out of him again.

He fares a little better on the puppet’s response, but was blindsided as Yatamaru repeats himself. Stumbling back, he motions once more and the armored beast roars. A dragon shimmers into existence in the air, flying a circle around the arena before slamming into Yatamaru and taking his breath away. Maki didn’t question why a puppet needed to breathe, and takes the moment to instead get beat on by that damnable puppet again.

Still, as he steps to the side and knocks his opponent’s last futile strike away, he could tell he’d come out ahead there. His armor was doing its job. And the armored figure he’d pulled into this world was not something trivial to be dismissed.

"For what it's worth, you're a hard person to put down. But its time to end this."

-A target can only be affected by one barrier at a time.
-Due to receiving actions and in a bit of a bind for time to mod, I modded the final round without waiting for Yatamaru's RP.

For the briefest of moments, everything was going according to plan.

Blood drenched the field. His opponent was bleeding out, fast, and all the machine-disguised-as-a-man had to do was to avoid his opponent's attacks. He was not, however, expecting such a brutal onslaught of power, followed closely by such unorthodox tactics. He'd seen things today that he'd never encountered before. Abilities which, before now, were unheard of to the man. All of which, he had recorded for his future scrutiny. He wouldn't allow himself to fall victim to any others like this Leafie punk.

No, not a punk. Maki of Konohagakure. He would remember the name well.

"Ah shit...just as I was starting to have some fun..."

He hadn't been pushed this far in a long time. His only regret was that he would not be able to bring Sunagakure the glory that it deserved. As his puppets clattered to ground around him, lifeless and immobile, he knew the battle was over. His opponent had won, beaten him, and still looked like he could keep on going. Yatamaru smiled, knowing full well that he'd given this fight everything that he had in him. As such, he couldn't be mad. Quite the opposite.

Yatamaru struggled to keep himself up. If his body was natural, he'd be sprawled out on the ground by now. But gears don't stop working. Metal doesn't bleed. Sure, some of his systems might be jammed — and sure, he'd probably overused the chakra core that helped regulate his non-bodily functions and would need to replace that very soon — but he would be able to exit from this stage without assistance. Glory, maybe not. But pride and dignity, certainly.

That didn't mean he didn't need a goddamn breather, though. He didn't want to start belching smoke in front of a crowd, now did he?

"Maki of Konohagakure, you are a fighter I will not soon forget." He reached for a cigarette, lighting the death stick up and taking in a deep drag, before offering to his opponent. A sign of goodwill, as it were. "When you're not busy preparing for your next fight, it would be my honor to buy you a round. Maybe then you can explain to me to workings of your ghostly companion."

After his last words, Maki steps back and his persona acts. Fire encircles the captain, forming a large wall of flames between him and Yatamaru. And that damnable puppet. Maki takes a moment to get in a breather as outside, his opponent and his weapon try to figure out how to handle the inferno between them and their target. Through the flames, he sees his foe try a new barrier tactic, and lets out a chuckle. ”Time to end this.”

The armored hellbeast screams its agonies to the sky as the rent in the air once more opens before it and shoots those stars of power at his foe. Five pass through the new barrier, hitting true to the mechanical man before him. Maki begins prepping his own technique, and presses a suddenly glowing hand to himself, the wounds in his form beginning to clot up as he knew this would end soon. Indeed, even though Yatamaru forms clones, it made little difference.

His persona gives the most beastial howl yet, and a massive rend in the world appears to encircle the entire arena. Thousands of arms reach through this new rend, grasping and groping. The clones, the puppets, and even Yatamaru. The barrier proved ineffective here, the rend passing through it as if it didn’t exist. Ripping, slashing claws grope and grab, trying to hold his foe in place for another assault.

Instead, the puppets around the field collapse lifelessly. Maki whistles sharply, and the jutsu ends, but the flames around him rise higher, blocking all view of him. He quickly finishes his jutsu to stop the bleeding and uses a wind blast to remove the blood from his form. His persona walks to the flame and steps through them, vanishing into the inferno. And Maki comes walking out in its place before the wall of flame peters out to reveal nothing inside of it anymore.

”Nor I you. I’ll let you know, but the trick I can’t go revealing just yet.” He reaches into his jacket pocket and pulls out a small flask. ”Here! And by the way, its cowgirl.” He chucks the drink at his opponent, waves to the crowd, and heads back into the waiting room to catch his breath.

Though he made an effort to look like he’d come out unscathed, he knew just how close that had been. He would need to get better to win this. He didn’t want to go home without the championship. Not for Konoha, but for himself.
