Koba’s alarm went off for the second time ever. He had opened the box last night and set the time, then the alarm. Unsure if it would work, he reset the alarm for a minute past the current time. For 60 seconds he sat there watching the red glare for the slightest movement. When the furthest right number moved up in sequence, the alarm stayed quiet though. Koba was stumped and almost through the clock against the wall while cursing its manufacturer for selling a defective product. After a few seconds though, he realized that he had forgot to set the alarm for PM. He ticked through the motions to set it once again for a minute ahead and waited the longest minute once again. Just as designed, the alarm went off as planned.
At the end of his bed were his clothes. He had his entire day planned out. He would first pee, then get dressed all taking 8 minutes. After a hardy breakfast for 10 minutes, he would brush his teeth and kiss him mother goodbye. 6 minutes. After a 18 minute to his first day at the academy, he would spend the next 12 minutes making new friends and figure out who his lifelong nemesis will be. That is when the bell will ring and he will officially be a ninja.
As he made his way out the door, the sun peeked inside his ball cap. It hurt his eyes at first but he knew his eyes would adjust. He yelled back to his mother once again to say goodbye. Since he was already 24 seconds ahead of schedule, he allowed himself that luxury. As he hesitated at the door, he was thankful for that spare time. Slowly he walked north, the sun seemed to be getting brighter and the air was thicker. He felt out of sorts and wondered if this was just nerves.
He looked at his clock and realized his timing was getting thrown off quickly. From having a surplus 19 second, he now was behind 3 minutes and some change. He didn’t understand how this was happening. When he tried to move faster, his legs became heavier and the sun was more blinding than he had ever seen before. No matter what he did, he was trapped by his own mind and body. In the far distance, the academy bell rang and he knew that he had failed before he ever began as he fell to the floor.
Later that day, his doctors would tell him a long word he had never heard before. Agoraphobia.
