"What am I Becoming?"
It had been about three days since the door to her private lab had closed behind her, concealing the secrets of her work from the masses whilst she trudged through the mind fuck that was the human genome. Having come to the conclusion long ago that such a task was akin to attempting complete a jigsaw puzzle with half the pieces missing; from this she had come to realize that the human body was built in such a way that it could and should be able to accept the DNA of other living creatures on the planet, working under the assumption that we are all pieces to the same puzzle yet simply evolved in a way that made it seem impossible.
Some would likely call her mad if they’d gotten a hold of her research from the past eight or so years but the woman was convinced that she was on the right path to becoming an “Enlightened” as she called it, a completed human so far advanced from the unfinished apes they had become. She had tasted her first bit of success a few years ago after having managed to grow from stem cells and various tissues from many snake species, she had managed to grow a pair of human sized reptilian eyes which with a lot of care she’d managed to transplant into herself; the medical field would surely be cursing themselves if they knew what a talent had managed to sneak into the ANBU ranks. Filled with confidence she continued her research into the snakes as those seemed to be oddly compatible when it came to splicing, of course there were many failed experiments and injuries sustained along the path but slowly she had acquired more and more insight and knowledge, coming fo far as to alter her bone structure to allow retractable fangs to sit in front of her mouth as well as venom sacs that the syringe like teeth could inject at will.
Of course it hadn’t escaped her attention that snakes would only get her so far and she would need to move on to other subjects as the years went by, she wasn’t getting any younger quite yet. It was at the beginning of these three days that it hit her however. Plants, possibly the oldest of living organisms on this world but why was that? Simple, evolution had been granted in boon to the flora of the world, allowing rapid changed among all species in order to survive. For the first two of these days she gathered information on some of the more common plants around the village, tearing them down to their base molecules and examining them till she’d come up with a vial of fairly volatile green liquid. The nature of the liquid was a shock to her as everything used in the concoction was perfectly digestible, after all these were normal flora found around the world and animals ate them in abundance. None the less she sat herself down and drank the liquid, not believing in experimenting on lab rats, prisoners or animals, but rather liked to use herself to gather the most accurate of results.
Things had started out normal, a strangely warm yet tight feeling in her stomach, then nothing but darkness as she blacked out onto the floor of her lab and it is where she would remain for a solid nine hours. It was upon waking up that she would discover the changes the brew had bestowed upon her; Her once pale skin was now a paled green colour and her hands and forearms were covered in thin vine like embossments that seemed to follow her veins. Rushing to a mirror she quickly discovered that the same vine like extrusions were on her face, neck, chest and on her feet and lower legs, she was horrified for a moment as she stared herself up and down but it then hit her. “Success….” She said stunned, the plants had done in so little time what her work on snakes took years to accomplish and though she would not stop just yet, this breakthrough meant so much to her future and what she was to become, she began to chuckle softly then burst into laughter as she looked at herself in the mirror so much more beautiful in her mind.
