Jirou had never been one who liked to stay indoors, especially when the sun was shining like it was today. He sat in class his elbow propping his head up while he stared out the window. Kashikoi was napping inside his coat, the soft rhythm of his breathing both comforting and relaxing. The majority of whatever the instructor was saying, with the exception of a word or two, was pretty much floating out the window along with his gaze. The two words he caught were Hidden Power. This is what made him think back.
Jirou thought back to how they had come to arrive in the Hidden Leaf Village. Running from the village, jumping into the rapidly flowing water with Kashikoi inside his coat, struggling to catch air and keep both of their heads above the water. This was followed by washing up on a shore that he did not recognize and making a voyage of several days to reach the road leading to the leaf village. He had not even a clue about his direction or if he was going the right way. Both of them should have died somewhere along the way. And yet… just how had they managed to survive. He had just turned six when the bandits had attacked their village. He could see the images clearly in his mind, perhaps a bit too clearly, as he watched from outside of himself at everything that had transpired. He remembered a warming sensation as boy and dog were carried along the rushing currents of the river. He felt a surge of power that went through his limbs. This allowed him to push both himself and Kashikoi upwards to stay above the water. He remembered feeling an increase in strength and stamina that stayed with him until they had reached the Hidden Leaf Village. He remembered feeling determined and wanted to protect the only family that he had left. It was like a rush of energy rushed through him to help him. Was this the Hidden Power that the Instructor was talking about? He would ponder this further as the bell rang and the class was dismissed for the day.
