The Deal
The drips and drops of rain littered the front of the house of the disgraced family tree of Nanjirou Sunuke and his ancestors. It was surprising that a house made of wood could survive weather like this and not smell like one hundred year old damp but the house remained in good shape. Though as Sunuke would grow to understand how important this house was to the family and its history.
He had been trying to sell it off for many years now, as with only three living in the house and more bedrooms than he could count fingers on his hands. He just didn’t feel that it was a good idea to have that many rooms and no one else to fill them up with. It was a legacy for sure, but a legacy that he wanted to get out of the future family. Nanjirou were meant to be a clan of honour and fighting dirty and assassinating people was not meant to be how they were. So why did his ancestors go down that path?
He had been in the family library during the afternoon, comprised of a small room full of scrolls and books filled with information as old as the house itself. If he were going to be the patriarch of a whole clan, then he’d eventually have to know more about the history than anyone else. That’s what was suggested by his spirit guide, Nanjirou Musashi.
Musashi was old in form, looked a little frail at the time of death, but still had some kind of aura of command in him. His eyes piercing, and a complexion very similar to Sunuke’s. It seemed the genetics had not changed much since his time, only the way people thought.
”So how did you really die?” Sunuke asked as he turned to the spirit who was following the ninja. ”Surely if you lived a long time you died from old age, but you’re telling me you denied yourself the chance to do that so you could end up miserable and permanently stuck in our world instead of being free? It just seems a little odd that someone would do that in case they had an overall plan for the family.”
”Well you know, someone in the family has to look out for the rest of them. Do you even know where your siblings are? I was once like you, trying to break away from our traditions and our history. The world was changing and we were stuck in archaic and old ways. We had to move out of it eventually, or we would crumble against new families.” The ghost would shrug as the Jounin would glare at him suspiciously, before turning to the scrolls.
”Musashi you died hundreds of years ago, and yet there’s no recorded gravestone, no memorial in the family history and a load of scribbles and blots where you should be in the history. So why hang around the house all day like you’re trying to prove something?”
The ghost looked away, looked towards the collection of Nanjirou swords that were displayed in a case. He motioned Sunuke over, and pointed to a number of swords that were there. It would take the Jounin a little while to notice that there weren’t many swords actually in the case, although it was locked tight, and there hadn’t been any damage to the structure.
” You’re a Nanjirou, and it’s your job now to make the family strong again. With your parents gone from the village you have to lead whatever is left of the clan to glory. But remember, there are more than likely other Nanjirou clan houses in the village. We broke away from them because of a common ancestor and the way we believe that power should be gained. I’m here to bring the family a continued success, as well as to lead the patriarch to power.” He pointed down to a sword that was broken within the cabinet. ”It’s my blessing and my curse, for I was one Nanjirou who broke the code and thus had to stay on earth forever as a ghost. I’m unable to battle, unable to change the world myself, but only to guide those on the right path towards ushering a new era of Nanjirou traditions and techniques. You are who I believe will be the next one to add your sword to this cabinet, and there aren’t many who are able to last that long to be able to give up your sword for the legacy.” An inspiring speech by one that had used it over and over again for a number of decades and had rehearsed it for longer than the house had been here.
What Sunuke didn’t know, was that Musashi was the clan member who broke away from the main Nanjirou household due to his dislike on their approach on honour and power. If the bloodline was meant to continue, then the people would have to change and become stronger. But he would have to slowly manipulate the Jounin to get his overall plan underway.
”Well fine then… I’ll listen to you for now. If you’re going to guide me, how are you going to follow me constantly and make sure that I’m doing right? You’re not a very fast ghost, and you’d lose me so quickly in the streets.” He would frown at the old ghost, who would in turn just smile and nod.
”Correct. What we do is make a pact through your weapon that would store me inside it like you’d seal a jutsu inside a scroll, or how you could make a contract with a summon. It’ll keep me close, and will allow me to share my wealth of knowledge and skills with you. All you have to do is follow into the dojo, put your sword down and smear a bit of your blood along the hilt of the sword. Since I’m nearby it’ll react to the nearest Nanjirou spirit and seal a bit of both of us inside. This will-“
”Wait a second, you mean to say that I’ll lose a part of my soul to my weapon Don’t you think that’s a bad idea? Since you know… spirits are the most important part of our clan history. Don’t you think it’s bad to just throw our own away all nilly willy?” He would close up the scrolls he had with him in his hands still and move them back to the shelf before leaving the library to the dojo.
”Hey I did this with my spirit guide back then and it was all ok, don’t worry about it!” He ushered the Jounin into the dojo and circled around him like a vulture to its dinner. Sunuke sighed and followed in, putting his sword to the floor and looking around.
He take a kunai, and cut his thumb lightly, wincing slightly at the sudden pain and bleeding. He then returned the kunai to the holster and pinched his thumb to draw the blood. It was a bit of a worrying experience, and something about it terrified him slightly. He just hoped his brother and sister were not around to see what he was doing to keep the clan from going into arrested development after their inheritance.
The blood started burning along the sword as he smeared it along the hilt, making a horrible smell and creating a weird smoke. He could feel a part of his heart growing cold as the blood reached the bottom of the hilt. He would look out the corner of his eye to see Musashi growing… older? Was that what this did to spirits when you made a contract via blood?
As the contract ended and Sunuke looked at the sword, he noticed that it now glowed a purple hue around the edge of the sword, and Musashi was nowhere to be seen.
”There, now that I am embued into the sword, we now have a connection as weapon and master. I will help guide the blade into the enemy, and I will seek them out as when needed. But because we are now one then I give you my knowledge on techniques. I will guide your training and development from now on.” The Nanjirou was shaking, but if it was for helping the clan, then It would be all worth it.
” Well… lets begin now then shall we?”
The practice
It had been about an hour since Sunuke mad made the deal with his spirit guide Musashi, who in turn became a part of his weapon. It had joined the two souls together over the weapon. This would empower the Jounin, and now it would lead the clan to a new era.
”Ok the Musashi, what can we do now that you’ve now become my weapon. I mean… I feel a little stronger, but at the same time something feels off.” He would hold onto the sword and swiped with it a few times, feeling it was lighter than before. ” If you’re going to be my partner than you’re going to have to know how I fight, and what we can do to make it better.”
He heard Musashi from his sword, almost like a thought more than anything. He was invasive for sure, becoming more and more like his own.
”Your sword is full of life and energy, though it’s one that seems to drain away life of others… It’s dark and it’s powerful and yet… needs fine-tuning. You need to be able to take hits, and you need to be able to stay with me. If you keep a link with your sword, then you’ll be able to defeat anything.”
Sounds like you know way too much about this, Sunuke thought about it to Musashi, to avoid looking like he was talking to himself. He would try some of his Nanjirou techniques, but nothing seemed new about it.
”Nope that’s not what you can do now. What I’m able to give you as a spirit inside your sword is to improve your finesse, and to guide you through battle. Overall we are now one, and with me inside I link you and the weapon together. It’s a sort of spirit link that cannot be removed in battle. How about just you know… understanding the bond between you and your weapon now?”
It made sense in a way. By being able to talk with the spirit now inside his sword, he could definitely have an eternal bond with the weapon. And by practising with this bond would allow him to develop something that hardly anyone else in history could actually do.
He stood there and focused his efforts on his bloodline moves again. As he sensed the bond between him and his weapon growing, and could feel the spiritual link that he and Murashi now had, he knew there was something else now. He took a slash at the air, breaking the air particles with chakra, and following it up, after. This second one he delayed for a further ten seconds.
As he looked at his sword and saw that he hadn’t been able to really combine a jutsu with itself, Sunuke was sure that the contract he had made with Musashi had left him stronger than before. At least physically- as something inside his heart confused him a little. Something was cold and dark, just like the clouds outside.
He had forgotten about his suspicions about Musashi, and instead was enjoying work on combining jutsu together. From chaining attacks, to combining ninjutsu with his affinity to water jutsu. The fluidity of the moves together allowed him to create a fast and yet powerful move through his weapon. He didn’t need to use ninjutsu, but if he could make it work with his taijutsu then maybe it was time to invest in some more.
But his final technique that he was able to understand from this session was his most interesting one. The Nanjirou sword was starting to change shape from its usual samurai sword look. Instead the weapon was growing its own persona and transforming into its own shape.
The sword grew larger and darker, with the shape turning into sort of like a tsunami wave, though with some tiny razor thorns along the blade. It unnerved him a little as he saw what the blade was becoming, but it was how it had become now. He was in a binding contract with this spirit Musashi, and his blood and soul was linked.
”That’s enough for today Musashi, I… I wish to retire to my room and meditate on today. What I’ve done for the family is a lot, but you must know now that I’ve done this and we’re now bonded, you’re my weapon. I am leading the future of our clan, and I’m bringing it to a new era. We’re getting out of the shame, and we’re bringing honour to the village ok?” The spirit was silent, so the Jounin took that as a sign of it being ok, and headed back to his room.
His mind was racing, but he knew that it was the upmost importance that he would continue onto his journey of constant work with his weapon to work hard for Stone village. For he knew that inside this was the right way to go. Musashi however knew that this would lead him to manipulate Sunuke into carrying out the clans goals and objectives.
