Appearance:
Gattsu is a tall and muscular boy with a wild and aggressive appearance. He has short disheveled dark hair that is normally unkempt and uncared for. His body is covered from head to toe in scars, with various lacerations and burns across his back and torso. He also has a branded mark on the back right side of his neck that his captor marked him with in an attempt to sacrifice him during a ritual. He appears much older than most people his age and comes off aloof and menacing in his demeanor, exhibiting a cold air about him. Despite this, he also seems to have an insatiable bloodlust that is represented in his wild and animalistic expression. His eyes appear almost predatory, his lack of human interaction making him stare at people for far longer than socially acceptable causing him to appear almost sociopathic in the way he looks at others. Always seems on guard, his every movement calculated though primal, showing an untrained but animalistic nature in his movements, his walk, his every action. His hands are rough and filled with callouses, showing he is no stranger to hard physical labor and self-training. He has a large scar across his chest, as if a large blade slashed across his torso. His teeth are pearly white, however he is more akin to a dog or animal with unusually large and sharp canines, his oddly shaped pointy ears adding to his already wild and primal appearance.
His casual attire usually consists of a sleeveless shirt with bandages wrapped around his torso and various parts of his arms. He opts to wear normally dark clothing in combination with cheap leathers that provide protection against the harsh winters he is accustomed to enduring. He has been known to wear protective gear at times as well as a large hooded cloak that offers concealment of his face as well as protection against his surroundings. Having grown up wielding large blades, he is accustomed to using large foreign blades that greatly tower his own size.
Personality:
"Humans are weak...but we want to live, even if we're wounded...or tortured...we feel the pain."
A gruff and cynical boy holding a bleak outlook on life, he is widely recognized for his air of austerity. He comes off unapproachable and unfriendly, his lack of interactions with normally civilized people make him lack honorifics often and make him appear rude and uncivilized. This is a consequence of having endured waves of sufferings and betrayals in his short life, he has little regard for respect and has lack of understanding in empathy and emotional awareness. He comes of guarded and brooding, extremely unsociable and uncaring as he has complete lack of any kind of social skills. However upon closer inspection, he isn't mean by definition, he simply has been devoid of care and love his entire life and as such the concept is foreign to him. He is indifferent to the suffering of others and detests those he deems weak, becoming a largely self-centered and anti-social individual. Despite this, he is not a sociopath, showing compassion to wild life despite having hunted for survival he has never willfully caused suffering, opting quick and clean deaths of his prey as a means to survive.
Although largely a solitary individual, for the few bonds he does make, he has shown to develop appreciation for the bonds he does makes, being grateful for their company and individual strengths. He is shown to be fiercely loyal to those he has bonded with, showing a certain level of compassion and protective nature towards them. However his reclusive nature and hostility towards those attempting to connect with him, make it difficult for him to form bonds in general. He has also shown to be vindictive and wrathful, having no problems taking life as it is something he has done for as long as he could remember.
Gattsu also seems to have an indomitable will which enables him to persevere in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. His force of will is so savage and great that he has no problems taking risky maneuvers in combats and placing himself in extremely dangerous situations in pursuit of his goals, he has been known to let himself be injured in order to create openings and counter attacks against highly skilled opponents. His style of combat is more akin to a wild beast than an honorable shinobi, it is also known to be extremely violent while also highly effective. He never hesitates, even when failing could result in his death. Gattsu also appears to have an extremely dark personality hidden inside, one that is bloodthirsty and enjoys combat situation that force his limits. There is a part of him that likes the thrill of placing his life on the line, putting it all in a situation where it's a matter of kill or be killed. Despite this twisted persona, Gattsu is not an evil individual, if anything he is the symbol of humanities struggle against good and evil, a boy born of darkness who retains his humanity no matter the depravity of the situations he is placed in. His willpower allows him to retain his humanity in the carnage that is his life, allowing him to effectively keep one foot on the edge of insanity and madness and another in sanity and benevolence.
Above all else, Gattsu is the personification of persistence and resilience. The numerous trials and tribulations he has faced, he has never yielded to fate and struggles against insurmountable odds. His indomitable will allows him to survive situations that would have killed him and he resists his fate at these times, effectively being known as the struggler of causality, refusing to submit to fate and destiny.
Prologue: The Mercenary Children
"In blood we will forge them. In pain we will teach them. In agony we will build them. In death we shall test them."
Gattsu was born to an unknown slave in the mountains of Monumentum Deo after she was hung for stealing the mercenary leader, Ganbin’s bread. His infant body fell from her hung body, her frail body pregnant but hardly showing due to starvation as Ganbin’s men realized an infant fell out. Another slave who had lost a child earlier that year quickly picked up Gattsu, pleading to let her raise him and let him be part of Ganbin’s mercenary children experimentation as they would have left him there to die otherwise. The group of mercenaries were fanatics obsessed with the idea of creating a Kinjutsu that would require live sacrifices of skilled swordsmen, as such they dragged a bunch of illegal slaves into Kirigakure, hoping to create skillful swordsman to be used in a ritualistic Kinjutsu. His foster mother died to the harsh climate of mountains at a tender age of three, at the time his only known care was the maternal love that she provided. The rest of his remaining days living with the slave group where it was survival of the fittest. If they weren’t hunted down and killed by the wildlife or rogue mercenaries and bandits, they would be killed by the constant harsh climates or the countless battles to the death they were forced to partake in amongst each other."In blood we will forge them. In pain we will teach them. In agony we will build them. In death we shall test them."
He has been largely devoid of a true purpose in life, killing as a child mercenary as a means to survive and live after being tossed into countless battles by his unknown captor. After developing a friend with another child mercenary, his first and only true friendship at the time, he showed his nature as a fiercely loyal and protective individual, appreciating the bond he made towards his friend, Roukan. They were all trained harshly by Ganbin, the fanatic swordsman attempting to create skilled swordsmen to be used for the sacrifices. Despite the ill treatment and horrible living conditions, for many of the child mercenaries, this was the closest resemblance of a father that any of them had. Ganbin himself was a missing-nin from Kumogakure and held considerable skills especially in swordsmanship, skills he would pass on to his band of mercenaries in order to create the best swordsman across the nations. However he was also mentally disturbed, paranoid, and abusive towards the children believing it was the best way to create the best Shinobi.
The boys were taught live combat, hunting skills, survival, stealth, and various other shinobi skills. They were also taught conventional warfare tactics, psychological manipulation, deception, and various other skills that Ganbin believed was necessary to create the ultimate killers. It did not matter if most did not possess the ability to mold chakra, for they were to wield blades not Ninjutsu. During this times, many boys such as Gattsu had nightmares from the trauma they experienced and had difficulty sleeping. Sometimes, boys such as Gattsu would sleep with their blades as a safety item to ease their worries, many only owning their clothes and the blades they wielded. This continued until his ninth birthday where Ganbin began to hold an elimination exhibitions to weed out the week. It involved fights to the deaths among the children while the adult mercenaries drank and betted on the winners. During this year, Gattsu fought, won, and killed dozens of his fellow mercenary child, dwindling down the numbers to the champions who survived the combat tournament, the future “sacrifices” Gattsu, Roukan, and others were the last survivors of the children mercenaries.
During a raid of a traveling merchant, it was unknown at the time that the merchant had hired fellow Shinobi from Kumogakure to protect his wares. The failed ambush resulted in the death of many of the adult mercenaries with one of the sacrificial children being killed in the process. Ganbin was gravely injured, losing a leg and suffering grave injuries across his body. On one particular night, Roukan was in charge of fetching drinking water, however Gattsu offered to take over the task as Roukan was still suffering injuries from the failed raid that took place just a few nights ago. While in one of the streams in the freezing winter, he began daydreaming, watching his breath mystify in the air as he then heard screams back in the camp. Running back with his bare feet cold with the winter snow, he returned to find bloodied corpses all across the camp. Mortified he saw all the adults and children withered and broken on the ground. He ran back into the tent with Ganbin, as his eyes grew wide in horror. On the floor next to him laid Roukan’s lifeless corpse, Ganbin having sacrificed the entire caravan to make up for the lost child as well as the rest of the children. Had Gattsu not taking over Roukan’s task, he would have been the one to be laying on the ground lifeless this moment. Ganbin turned around and Gattsu in a rage picked up a sword and attempted to strike him down, only to be knocked down without much trouble. Ganbin branded Gattsu with the Kinjutsu in order to make him the next sacrifice, as he swung his blade down to take his life, Gattsu raised his blade frantically and pierced Ganbin’s neck through sheer luck. His foster father, mentor, and trainer ended by his own hand. Afterwards, Gattsu in tears grabbed some gear and ran off into the mountains.
The freezing temperatures made it difficult to survive alone in the mountains. He had experience hunting, however the creatures were far more powerful for him alone, as Ganbin and dozens of other children mercenaries along with adults usually aided in the hunts. For the next couple of years, he endured the harsh cold, learned to hide and survive and find what little vegetation was available and avoided the countless predators, avoiding fights as it would mean certain deaths and the unavoidable fights normally leaving him on the verge of death after narrow escapes. Days before his thirteenth birthday, a Shinobi from Kumogakure appeared and stumbled upon Gattsu in an icy cavern. He was sent long ago to search for Ganbin as news of his illegal slavery of Kumogakure citizens and his illegal jutsu experimentation spread across the lands. After attempting to rescue the boy, Gattsu not knowing who he was attacked the Shinobi only to be defeated, however the Shinobi was impressed with Gattsu’s skill and strength and upon realizing Gattsu had the innate yet unrefined ability to mold Chakra, offered Gattsu his birth right to return to Kumogakure and attend the Academy in order to grow stronger and refine his abilities and skills. Gattsu hesitantly accepted, after being asked his name he introduced himself as Gattsu. Asking if he had a surname, he remained quiet realizing he was never given one…after remembering his long dead friend he finally responded…”Roukan. Roukan Gattsu”
The brand of sacrifice will forever remind you of the bloodstained past you carry...
