The moonlight illuminated the surface, a sight the young Arawe Zashi was quite familiar with. Before his immigration to Sunagakure, he was a surface-dweller, after all. And for this reason, he was a suitable candidate in regards to homebuilding. The fact that it was a paying job was just icing on the metaphorical cake.
Unfortunately, given his whole being armed to the teeth and wielding electricity and air jutsu, Zashi was assigned to guard duty. Sokuga, an old mercenary turned volunteer, was instead assigned to build while Zashi watched out for pugilist scorpions and dune bugs with Sokuga’s carbine.
”Hey, here’s a question. How come the small boy is watching for giant flesh-eating locusts, and the gunman is building?”
”Vision ain’t what it used to be, kid, and we’re on the outer rim. Keep yer eyes open. Now quit yer yappin’ and get to shootin’ things.”
Zashi rolled his eyes and aimed in front of a pugilist scorpion, shooting the sand in front of it and causing the creature to scuttle away. With a name containing “pugilist” one would think they’d be more aggressive. Sokuga slicked the bricks with another layer of stone-based adhesive, laying down a stone brick and proceeding to lather that one in adhesive.
”Oi, Sokuga-san. Dune bug pack on the horizon, heading here. I’ll take care of it, I kinda want them away.”
It looked like a smaller pack, probably not a huge threat – the creatures were docile anyway. He buttoned up his cloak to avoid the night’s cold and slung the carbine over his shoulder. He began jogging towards them, stopping on front of the herd. He felt at ease since they looked well-fed. He knelt down, petting one of the creatures and reaching into his satchel, feeding it some jerky.
”Y’know, I think you guys are better than a lot of people I know.”
He began walking away, shooing the bugs away. ”I gotta go back, see you later, guys.” He sighed, looking back at the unfinished house. It was going to be a long night.
