Tobikuma is a young boy that stands at average height for his age, around five-foot-three-inches, and has a slim but fit body type ideal for speed over strength. Because of his height and physical stature, he is both lithe and swift in movement, and a lot of his training has focused on that. He has mid-length white hair typically brushed back, crimson eyes, and marks his face across the nose and both cheeks. Tobikuma usually has a neutral expression to his features. Often considered rather casual or aloof, due to controlling his emotions, many could assume he is emotionless. Tobikuma is capable of expressing himself emotionally, of course, but feels that by developing a 'poker face' now he can better learn to confront enemies later without giving anything away.
Potentially unique to Tobikuma is his forest-pattern poncho, which can be draped to cover most of his body and assist in further concealing him from the naked eye while in forest environments. Additionally, he wears a less traditional happuri instead of a forehead protector, which offers some additional protection on the sides of his face.
More typically, Tobikuma wears light garments made of a fine fabric, which are layered in a similar manner to most ninja robes. The robes are dark in color, a mixture of deep purple and gray, and contains a variety of pockets for various items. The robes are kept in place at the waist by a simple belt-wrap, while Tobikuma's pants are tapered at the knees and tucked into his knee-high boots that have knee-guards. On either arm, Tobikuma wears gloves, with fingertips removed for ease of hand movement, and linen straps that are wrapped around both forearms up to each elbow.

Tobikuma is a typically considered casual and aloof. His usual manner is carefree, with a touch of sarcasm, and he tends to smirk a lot. Although he puts on a confident facade, Tobikuma still takes being a ninja very seriously, and has a deep drive to excel and overcome his past, to make something of himself when his parents decided to take away that opportunity. In serious situations, the boy tends to remain quiet, and focuses on the task at hand, but he is far from introverted. Tobikuma will voice his opinions, will speak up, and won't let others with stupid ideas or plans force their same stupidity on him.
For the most part, Tobikuma has no problem speaking to others. Often he has willingly approached people and started conversations, likening to believe that he is somewhat easy to get along with and isn't interested in causing friction. Throughout his ninja academy training, despite his skill Tobikuma remained modest, never being boastful, and preferred to remain set on his path of personal achievement without the need to showboat to others. Even now, he puts an emphasis on being completely efficient; he does what is required and has no interest in being overly dramatic or flashy. And when it comes to others he works with, Tobikuma demands no less of his fellow ninja than he expected of himself. He hopes this will earn him respect from his peers, and set a strong example of his willingness to lead in the future.
And to those that have Tobikuma’s loyalty, as either friends or respected elders, they will find him unflinching in his resolve to aid them in any manner available to him. He has been known to stand by his comrades, no matter the situation; however, thankfully, he has yet to follow a companion to the bitter end, though Tobikuma wouldn’t hesitate to take selfless action for the right reasons.

His birthday was listed as January 1 by the local village orphanage, who had taken the child in when he was a newborn, as Tobikuma had been told that he had been left on the doorstep for the carers to find in an urn. For his entire life, Tobikuma's parents remained unknown to him, and the abandoned child was given his name by the orphanage due to having no legal parentage. From a young age, Tobikuma proved capable with displays of physical prowess; he was quick, agile, and had excellent balance, which made him a nightmare for the orphanage carers. Often Tobikuma would use his speed and quick hands for personal gain, stealing from local food merchants or taking toys from shopfronts to share between the other orphans.
One such instance actually propelled Tobikuma on a whole different path, when he tried to steal a bag of freshly cooked dumplings from an unassuming man in a coat. Unknown to the child at the time, he had attempted to take the food from Urame, a Jōnin rank ninja, and was stopped effortlessly. Still, something about the boy had caused the Jōnin to reconsider punishment; there had been skill, some underlying capacity for ninja arts, and it had been impressive for an orphan with no clan training or upbringing. Not to mention the strong physical resemblance to one of the more famous Senju clan members. So, instead, Urame told the boy he wouldn't report his actions, so long as Tobikuma promised to cease thieving and walk the right path - and if he did, he would be rewarded. Being a boy that lived by his word, Tobikuma agreed, and did exactly that.
Later that year, Tobikuma was contacted to attend the village Ninja Academy, his fees paid for by a mysterious benefactor. It wouldn't be until sometime later that the boy discovered that Urame, the ninja he had stolen from, had paid for Tobikuma's attendance. Whether to see what the boy could do, or to give an orphan a chance, it was never revealed. But, following his application to the Ninja Academy, Tobikuma was granted access to pass the initial testing to prove himself capable. The test was fairly simple, to which he was successful, and he took his place as a student.
Surrounded by his peers, each at different ages and at different points in their training, Tobikuma found himself withdrawn and solitary. While he learned to read, write and had his standard education fulfilled in classes dedicated to such lessons, he often longed for the ninja arts training to start. Tobikuma's mind and body had been honed by harsh lessons, a streak of independence and learning from his mistakes. This focus, maturity at such a young age, and drive to make something of himself helped Tobikuma receive top marks. It also served to prove Urame's suspicions correct, by showing the validity of the boy's innate aptitude for the ninja arts while in the academy.
Putting in all his effort, Tobikuma's ninja art lessons were completed to the highest standard, while the classes he felt were less important were generally considered average. Yet, his instructors were required to grade his skills, with them stating that Tobikuma was highly skilled in Ninjutsu, showed high potential in Genjutsu and was average with Taijutsu. It was also revealed that Tobikuma had connections to an ancient bloodline, the Senju clan, with the display of wood release Kekkei Genkai. Much to Urame's surprise, Tobikuma proved very skilled in the use of the application of wood abilities, and adopted the Senju name as his own. Despite his abilities with a range of studies, Tobikuma was made to complete the entire academy process by his benefactor, aimed at forcing the boy to improve his discipline and attention focusing skills; for while Tobikuma was highly skilled, and believed he knew what he needed to, he was still a child and others knew better.

And with the new year, and his twelfth birthday, Tobikuma awaited his placement into a Genin team under a Jōnin-sensei where he could prove he was worthy of the Senju clan name and bloodline...

Tobikuma first released the potential of his bloodline while trying to protect an elderly couple from a small group of thugs. Well into his ninja academy training, and feeling confident in his abilities so far, the young ninja-in-training was walking to the local dumpling store for a late meal. On the way, he passed an alleyway where he saw three teenaged thugs holding up two old women, at knife point. Knowing it was his responsibility to protect members of Konoha Village, the boy immediately jumped to their rescue. However, being a student and outnumbered, Tobikuma was beaten down by the older boys, much to his embarrassment. Wanting to teach the upstart ninja-wannabe a lesson, the thugs decided they were going to cut the boy up with their knives, leave some scars to remember them by...
Though, it was around this moment, with the threat of sharp blades that Tobikuma reacted. He didn't think, he didn't plan, he simply wanted to defend himself and instinctively lashed out. At that exact moment, the elderly women began screaming, as did the thugs, and Tobikuma effectively passed out. Having heard the calls of panic, some other ninja appeared on the scene, and were surprised to see the thugs in a state of binding – though not with rope or chains, but with thick vines that had seemingly emerged from the very ground!
Needless to say the occurrence was a revelation for both Tobikuma and his trainers in the academy, revealing the boy’s link to the ancient Senju bloodline and the Kekkei Gendai of Mokuton [Wood] release. For the academy, they gained a strong claimant for the Senju bloodline; for Tobikuma, it was a chance to finally feel as though he belonged, as the orphan discovered he was actually part of a well-established and respected clan of the Village!
Plus, the elderly women were shaken but otherwise unhurt, and thanked their young hero with sweets and some dumplings after the thugs were dealt with by the older ninja.
It had turned out to be a very eventful day for Tobikuma.
