Well that was simple enough, at first. She nodded at his consent, closing the distance between them and lifting her hands to chest height before stopping. It seemed he did not understand his position as well as he thought he did, and this was a problem that needed to be rectified immediately. Her hand dropped back down to her side, and she took an automatic step back. It was best to be cautious and not too close, she wasn’t as confident as she made herself out to be, and by now was quite aware of the mess he caused at the Gates. Yet appearances had to be kept up, and she looked ready for anything.
“You failed to understand. You will be staying at the inn, you will have a curfew, and you will be monitored. It is the best way to ensure both your safety and that of my village. It is no inconvenience as it has already been arranged and the proper seals and jutsu are already in place. However, if you wish, you may always return to your cell with the collar at night, though the curfew will still be in place and you will find it far less comfortable than the inn.” But she couldn’t help it, she genuinely wanted him to follow the rules. His story didn’t make him a villain, it made him a man with few options. Why make life more difficult for himself when she was making it so easy to prove himself? Of course, she couldn’t say that. It would destroy the image of the fearless ANBU, so she would show her kindness as best as she could and hope he was more open to her help than he appeared. “I urge you to take the room. If you accept this bit of hospitality it will only help your case. All that is required of you is to enter the room at midnight and stay until six, I will be alerted if you fail to do so.” Her voice was the same emotionless echo, but Shizuka sincerely hoped he would be more receptive. Either way, she had wasted enough time.
“I am sealing you now.”
Again the ANBU stepped forward, her hands raised and slowly forming seals before picking up speed. First would be tracking, an entirely necessary thing should she want to have any sort of second life for the duration of his stay. Even if she didn’t, it would be impossible to watch him at all times, though the seals she had placed on his room would be sufficient during the nighttime hours. Shizuka would need to know where he was at all times otherwise. Suddenly her hands shot forward, stopping just short of his left shoulder, though the chakra kept going, flowing from her hands to his body, leaving a small violet circle beneath the fabric of his sleeve should he care to look later. “This one allows me to find you. Channel chakra into it if you need me, I’ll be there within minutes.”
Again her hands flew into seals, the air dense with her chakra as she molded it once more. Again her hands shot forward, the placement identical to the first. This time a series of crossed lines would appear over the circle. “This one allows me to sense any abnormal chakra usage. You should know by now any attacks of any sort will not be tolerated.” This would do for now, unless he decided to step out of line, in which case she had ways to pry further into his life.
Once more her hands formed seals, though within seconds her hand was held out face up, a crystal a bit larger than the palm of her tiny hand resting in the middle. “This can disguise your voice should you channel your own chakra into it. I do ask that you keep it on you at all times as a means for me to further check in on you if something were to go wrong. A sort of direct contact as I can channel my own voice through it and listen on your end as well. Please know that I am not trying to invade your privacy, but I need to be able to do my job. Nothing I do will be for the sake of harming you.” Unless of course, he decided to kill someone or do something equally retarded. In which case other plans would be set into motion.
“Sealing complete. In the Square you will find vendors of all sorts, and I am sure you can find a mask maker. This is a shinobi village after all. Once you leave this alley, turn left and walk one hundred feet. It will be on the right. There are numerous signs. Simply give them this,” she took a slip of paper from her pocket and handed it to him, “and they shall give you your key. As I said before, be in your room by midnight and do not leave until six in the morning. The seals will activate if you break one of the rules. If by any chance you cannot be there by midnight, you must summon me or we will assume the worst and be forced to take hostile action. I assure you it’s not something I want to do. These rules will stay in place until Hokage-sama returns and makes further judgment. That is all.”
She turned, ready to melt into the shadows. “Please do not do anything to harm the village. The chance you are getting is something none before you have ever gotten. We value our treaties and the safety of our people. I trust your common sense and that you are not an evil person. Do not prove me wrong.” And then she began to walk, the shadows swallowing her up until nothing was left but her ghostly echo.
“You know how to reach me.”

Shizuka wrote:
It was his scream that snapped her out of whatever frame of mind the fight had taken her to. Rolling about on the floor, clawing and ripping at each other, Shizuka had managed to steer them back into the open, away from Kami and back to where she could put some distance between them. Tangled, the hits were messy and tiring, she needed room to move, enough space to think clearly. When it came to speed and strength, the girls were almost evenly matched, Ayumu holding slight advantage in both areas. She was calculating, judging the best time to get away from their messy altercation when she was snapped out. Her heart sank as the form of Gin grew dangerously close, his worry evident in his voice.
Ayumu it seemed had not heard, or if she had, something had come over her to make her forget that little detail. Instead she continued in her vicious assault, using Shizuka’s moment of distraction to pin her down with her fingers around her neck. Panic surged through the smaller girl as the fingers tightened their grip. Gin was still moving and now she was stuck in a position that could very easily end her within a very short amount of time if she didn’t do something fast. And in a second her priorities were set, and her own hands that were scratching at Ayumu’s to get them to loosen their hold now stopped their desperate attempt. Instead, one shaking hand motioned to Gin, summoning her dancers once more and making them shoot forward, wrapping their shadowy arms around him, stopping him in his tracks before dragging him back and holding him in place. He could not get involved, not when Shizuka was still alive. As long as she was breathing there was a chance, though that was quickly diminishing. With every ragged breath she drew the fingers found more room to tighten, and Shizuka’s ears were ringing. Gin was taken care of, now she needed to get out of this mess.
For the second and what she prayed would be the last time in her life, Shizuka let her feelings slip away again and closed her unseeing eyes. Her breathing slowed and the demon was certain she had won now. Her mouth twitched into a twisted grin that was more terrifying than the girl herself. The fight was troublesome to say the least, but as she expected it to be, relatively short. This little girl was no match for the demon, no matter how strongly she had started. But there was still life in the little body that lay beneath her, so she kept pressing against her neck, certain that it wouldn’t be much longer now.
But Shizuka was not done by any means. The low hum began, and the air between the two grew sluggish and thick. It was unnoticeable at first, the demon was too focused on the prize to notice its final act of desperate rebellion. And what an act it was. She was back now, the waves shocking her into existence like a bolt to the chest, filling her lungs with what little air she had left and her heart pumping the blood through her veins with renewed fury.
Ayumu could not remain ignorant any longer, the buzzing cutting through her lust and the once weak heartbeat growing steadily stronger with each passing second. The girl was no longer a limp form beneath her, but an active living thing, the air around her pulsating with waves sharp as razors. Yet each felt like a gentle caress to the Hashigaki, she did not relinquish all control this time. They were hers and the woman on top of her needed to go. Once again the small hands gripped the wrists of the hands about her neck, no longer desperately scratching at them. Instead she focused, concentrating on bursting the delicate vessels and shaking her very bones.
Confused was not an accurate word for the demon, though it played a small part in the multitude of emotions running through her sickened mind. Rather, she was shocked that such a small thing could hold so much pent up fury. There was no anger, not this time. Amusement flickered across her face as she felt the bones in her wrist begin to give. Her grip couldn’t hold up much longer, and she acknowledged the strength that it took to make such a thing possible. So it was to be one of those fights. The typical hero gets her ass kicked until in a fit of rage she snapped, in turn kicking the ass of the one opposing her and in the end winning. Yet for all her searching Ayumu found no hint of anger within Shizuka’s mind, just a determination to rival that of any she had encountered before. This was her refusing to die, and Ayumu accepted the challenge. With a wince her grip loosened and Shizuka acted. The small action was as loud as a siren, the muscle sounding out to her as it weakened. With a yell she threw everything she had into Ayumu’s wrists, lifting them from her neck and rolling out of the way.
There was no time to lay and regain her energy, Ayumu was already on her feet and Shizuka copied the action, ignoring pain each breath brought. Her neck was already turning black with bruises. If the sound waves had a color, they would be the brightest of whites, shimmering like a heavenly glow around Shizuka as they protected her like an armor of invisible needles and razors. And if Ayumu’s demonic presence had a color it would be the deepest of blacks surrounding her, an aura of doom. Shizuka was past that feeling, and Ayumu was past being generous. They flew at each other , a flurry of kicks and punches, everything Shizuka had trained so vigorously for with the addition of a blast of waves each time she even came close to making contact. She was an ANBU, taught by Kami and defending what was left of him, and this creature would not touch him.
When exactly it happened Ayumu wasn’t sure. One moment she was feeling the stinging, ripping sensation of her insides being torn apart even as she fought, and the next there was something far more real. Shizuka had stopped, Ayumu guessed she had as well, she wasn’t moving as far as she could tell. Confused, she opened her mouth, shocked to taste the bitter metallic tang of her own blood, and in looking down she discovered why. A dagger of crystal, replacing the one that had been knocked away ages ago was sticking out from her chest.
Each covered in shared blood, they stared at each other. The crystal cracked, and a sonic blast ripped through Ayumu from the inside out, her chest now sporting a gaping hole as she collapsed in a puddle of her own blood and bone. Shizuka went down as well, sinking to her knees with her head bowed as exhaustion overwhelmed her. The vibrations around her ceased, no longer needed now that the enemy was down. She had done it, she marveled, she killed someone.
But blind as she was, and as tired as she was, she did not notice the body before her slowly stitching itself together, the skin going from a ghostly white to an unnatural grey, the open eyes flooding with an inky blackness. Shadows shot to her, feeding the mending form until it was near perfection. The eyes blinked, Shizuka’s head shot up in confusion.
Too late.
A clawed hand gripped her bruised neck once more, throwing her into a wall before she even had time to blink. With a crack and a scream of pain she slammed into the wall. But Ayumu was there before she hit the floor, grabbing her by the hair and kicking her the rest of the way down. Still Shizuka moved, coughing blood as she tried to crawl away, but it was not to be this time. Back with a vengeance, the demon crouched by her feeble prey, tongue running over fangs.
“It was a good try.”
Her hands delicately gripped Shizuka’s head, her smile triumphant. The dark energy flooded from her hands to the mind of the girl, and as her consciousness slipped away she screamed only one word, “Run!” Now completely limp, Ayumu let her drop back to the floor, smiling at the thud of her head against the concrete as she rose to standing. When the last of her screams faded, so did the shadows holding Kami, no longer bound to her will. But for now Ayumu didn’t care about him. Instead she walked away from them both, stopped only to pick something up from the floor before returning to the girl. It was her knife, and once again Ayumu knelt by her prey, still alive but not for much longer. She turned her head, flashing Kami a grin before pressing the dagger to Shizuka’s chest.
Hopefully he would stop this nonsensical innocence. It was growing old.

Shizuka wrote:
Eyes far too accustomed to the wickedly fast movement for one that used to be much more human, Ayumu could clearly see each rotation of the cutter as it flew towards her. Transfixed and amused by the idea of such a thing causing her more than a scratch upon her, she did not bother to move, her hand still pressing the knife to Shizuka’s chest, pressing the razor sharp tip into the flesh and drawing a bead of blood before Kami had appeared. What could he do to her now that she could not withstand? She was more god-like and more demonic than Kami could ever hope to be, such was her unfailing confidence. She would not be beaten, for she did not fear that which was after her blood. Instead she grinned wider as his beautifully terrible form appeared before her, the mask phasing too fast for even her eyes. Kami was back for the soul that she had given up for the chance to end his reign. The thought sent delighted shivers down her spine.
The grin did not fade as the blade ripped through her flesh, crimson running from the wounds before turning a stagnant black. She would not be left in a puddle of her own blood this time, not like the last time she had the misfortune of crossing him. In a sick imitation of what he had done that day, her body wove itself together, the only mark being a thin line of crimson where each slice had opened her. Ayumu was not to be taken so lightly, and barely conscious of the song playing in both of their minds she stood, licking what little of Shizuka’s blood the knife had gathered from it.
“I missed you Kami. Truly I did. Did you miss me?”
The grin had never faded, and she reached out a grey hand to stroke the side of the mask before quickly bringing it down to gouge his shoulder just like she had to Shizuka, her fingers like claws. He would not get away this time, there was nothing to hold her back from the moment she had been dreaming of since waking up on that blood soaked floor, unable to move and screaming in agony until she was able to call for one of her sisters with the headset she had to drag herself across the floor to, only worsening the damage he had caused.
It was when her skin made contact with his that she noticed the sound. The tune was one that had haunted her dreams for weeks, until sleep was no longer necessary to sustain her energy. It was the song she found herself humming in her darkest moments before she remembered where it had come from, and what it represented. In her current state of psychotic poise she had almost convinced herself she was imagining the song, it was a sign of some sort that her mind had conjured for her to make the moment all the sweeter.
And then it hit her like that first breath of oxygen after being pulled from the waves second before your lungs gave out, searing your throat and making your chest ache with the very force of it. Such was her unfamiliarity with the sensation it could not creep upon her, but rather at its first true sign she became very much aware. Though just what it was she was too unfamiliar with it to know exactly, only that it was there, and for a split second her body froze. And try as she might, Ayumu couldn’t shake the song from her mind. But it couldn’t be Kami broadcasting his signature tune, she was too powerful for that nonsense now. She was too powerful for him. So why oh why was it so hard to keep her grip on the feeling of absolute control she had held over her mind. She couldn’t let it slip away, and in her confusion lashed out physically, clawing fiercely at him, not focused on hurting him but on getting to that place where she was a god. The feeling was not coming back, no matter how hard she fought, no matter how much she willed the bloodlust to return and the mindless fury to take control.
She wasn’t in control. The walls crashed down around her and again she froze, trying to comprehend just what was happening to her. And in a flash of understanding Ayumu knew, her black eyes widening as they looked at Kami in horror for what felt like the first time. He was doing this to her. He was that song in her head that was slowly driving her crazy.
“You bastard,” she hissed, backing away, unwilling to face him with this new mindset. Behind her, Shizuka stirred, moaning in pain. And like an animal, trapped and afraid, she did what she had to do. Once more she was at Shizuka’s side, lifting her and dragging her back with her own knife to her bruised throat. Ayumu was desperate now, he was something she couldn’t handle, something that she could never hope to touch and he had to stay away. “Stay back,” she growled, as beast-like as the animalistic reactions the demon portrayed.

Shizuka wrote:
And Shizuka thought she was a social retard. Her look of wide eyed confusion turned into one of, well, more confusion. He wasn’t exactly a pleasant individual from the few seconds they had shared thus far. Being ignored was one of those things that could get the girl from happy to downright depressed in a matter of seconds. She had gone out of her way to say hello, interact with another human outside of her small circle, and he had ignored her completely. Was she that unpleasant? Could he tell after only two words what sort of person she was, and from that judge her to be unworthy of his attention? Her face fell. Already the pleasant atmosphere had been soured and it was very easily her own fault that such a thing had happened. She bit her lip, the nervous habit clearly displaying her discomfort. And just as she was about to turn and run as fast as she could the way she had came, he decided to acknowledge her presence in a very blunt and forthright manner.
Once again her face shifted into a look of confusion, trying to make sense of what he had just said. But a quick scan of the area told her what she needed to know. He was making ramen, apparently. Though why he chose to make it was a mystery. Still, her original reason for even approaching him returned. Shizuka had wanted to help, and here was her chance. “Herbs, spices, ramen.” Her voice was soft and held a musical lilt to it, and she couldn’t help but smile at him and her own ability to answer. Though it did seem rather common sense.
“My roommate is a chef at an inn. Not the ramen one though.” Did it really matter? Not in the least. But that’s how it goes when there is awkward silence. “Why are you making your own out here?” Not that making your own was weird, but the valley wasn’t exactly an elite kitchen. And yes, the thought had occurred to her that she might be unwelcome. However, she had decided to see just how far she could push the small talk before her told her to leave. Not to be annoying of course, but because people were interesting, and this one was one of the odder specimens. A very tall one, at that, she noted as he stood. Though her nose wrinkled as the smoke drifted over. Damn cancer sticks.

She knew it tasted off, but Shizuka had just blamed it on the lack of meat. Then again, she had never had a bowl of ramen that had no type of meat in it, so she really had no way of knowing if there was a foreign substance or if he had just failed horribly at cooking the most basic of dishes. Though for all his scariness she hadn’t expected the man to actually poison her. Immediately instinct took hold and she threw the bowl to the ground, spitting out whatever was in her mouth while tears welled up in her eyes. She really was going to die now, it seemed. Already he had tried her emotions, pushing them to the brink and then even farther. He was a mean person, someone Shizuka could not understand. And now he had taken advantage of her trust.
With a sniffle the tears began to fall, her hands covering her face as she started to cry in earnest. “Please don’t let me die! Please! I don’t know anything, I swear. Just what you told me! You fish and your name is Nakata Daichi! Please just don’t let me die.” Were she not already stressed and her emotions on the complete edge, she might have acted out in violence or even tried to reason with him. But her ankle hurt, she had already thought she was going to die once before, she was facing a known danger, and he had apparently slipped poison into her ramen that she had trusted him enough to eat. The only course of action was to cry and pray he would take pity on her. The truth was not an option, a fact that only made her cry harder. If she could, Shizuka would have told him everything he wanted to know. But Kami meant more to her than this person did, and she would not betray his confidence in her, the branch she served, or anyone else for that matter. That was the point of being a shinobi, no? And it would kill her to ever disappoint Kami, even if she was convinced that she had killed him. So she continued to cry hysterically, waiting for the effects of whatever he had put in her ramen to take effect and kill her, unless the man had a heart after all. In which case she prayed he would be swift in his kindness.

Shizuka wrote:
It hurt. There was pain everywhere, worse than when she had unknowingly set herself on the course for suicide. Far worse than dragging herself and the body of Kami back to their house, only to pretend as though nothing was wrong, and Kami had never truly been there. That sort of pain was on the inside, and even now it hurt just as badly there as her body did. She felt broken, the taste of blood was bitter on her tongue. But all she knew, all she could think about, was keeping him safe. Giving everything she had to repay him for just a fraction of all that the former host had given her. She owed him a life, a thousand lives. And all the Hashigaki had to offer was her own, a price she would willingly pay, she mused, as her head slammed into the concrete of the floor with another sickening crunch. Once again she had failed him, but this time, just maybe, she had bought him enough time to escape. The demon would be preoccupied with her, and Gin could run away and never look back. It would be a fitting death. One that she would not be too ashamed of, aside from the failure of it all.
And suddenly she missed him, missed his laugh that couldn’t be fake, missed holding his hand, missed playing with his hair. There was nothing she did not miss, and Shizuka had to wonder if wherever she was going, if she would see him there. She had to, she decided. Be it to reward her for a well lived life, so she could spend eternity with him, or punish her with glimpses and the knowledge that he would never be with her again. Either one would be fine. So long as it was him, and not Gin, and she could get just one more chance to say how sorry she was for what she did to him, for what she had forced upon him and for what she had driven him to do. If he could just hear it one more time, Shizuka could accept whatever was coming. So she let herself drift away, content in knowing that she could see Kami, and though she had ultimately failed at defending Gin, she had done all she could for him, and it was out of her hands.
And then there was a pain like fire, burning her out of her delusions and bringing her back in a deluge of searing agony. Her head was on fire, surely it was going to burst. It was all she could do to scream one last request to Gin, she wanted him to run if he hadn’t already, to use her pain as a means of escape. And then the fire stopped, and the shadows creeped in. A swirling miasma of doubt and fear took over where the fire had left off. There was no discernable cause, nothing concrete that she could trace these thoughts to. All Shizuka knew was that she was very much afraid, and thoughts off all else vanished completely.
But like everything else, that too came to an end. Everything did, and she was thrown back into a thoughtless night, where there was nothing but peace. Somewhere in the back of her mind she wondered if she was dead or dying, but that somewhere was too far away to make much of a difference. She was gone now, and the pain was over. It was time to sleep.
It was his voice Shizuka woke to, and she knew she had to be dead. He was thanking her for doing her best, for giving everything she had in defense of what was left of him. He was thanking her for defending his memory. “I’d do it a thousand times over. I missed you, you know. I cried every night. I hate myself for what I did to you, Kami. I tried to treat Gin like his own person, but all it did was make me think of you. I kept expecting you to come back. But now I’ve come to you. Odd how things work, isn’t it?” Her voice was little more than a whisper, the words slurred slightly by her fatigue. “Where are we?” Heaven? Hell? A great in-between where the heartless and the broken-hearted could come together at last?
