The academy’s obstacle course was lively, filled with students pushing themselves through the rigorous challenges. The sound of feet hitting the dirt, the occasional grunt of exertion, and the sharp clap of kunai striking wooden targets blended into a rhythmic backdrop. Kairen, however, had no real intention of joining them.
He strolled along the edge of the course, hands tucked into his pockets, his gaze flickering over the trainees as they fumbled through the obstacles. Some struggled with the climbing wall, their fingers slipping against the worn wood. Others tripped over the balance beams, their missteps met with laughter or frustration.
"They lack awareness… Putting all their effort into brute force instead of thinking things through." His eyes settled on one student attempting the rope swing, their grip faltering mid-air before they crashed into the dirt below. Kairen tilted his head slightly, watching them groan and push themselves up. "Predictable."
Despite his lack of participation, his presence went mostly unnoticed. That suited him just fine. He wasn’t here to be acknowledged—just to observe. The way bodies moved, the way they responded to strain and pressure, how some students pushed past exhaustion while others crumbled.
A faint breeze stirred the dust, carrying with it the scent of sweat and determination. Kairen exhaled softly, his expression unreadable as he resumed his slow walk past the struggling students.
A group of them huddled near a set of dummy targets, taking turns throwing kunai. One struck the edge, barely sinking in. Another completely missed. Kairen’s gaze lingered for a moment. "Even at this level, there’s such a difference in ability… Some of them won’t make it far."
He turned away, disinterested. There was nothing here for him. Not yet, at least.
