Tama blearily opened her eyes as the alarm went off in her tent. She got up and grabbed a fresh set of clothes before heading to the public baths to wash up. As she headed for the building she recalled how she used to train with her uncle Tomoyo at this time. That had been years ago, and Tama remembered how hard he had been on her when it came to being punctual.
Ever since her return from limbo, Tomoyo hadn’t mentioned trianing once though. And Tama had taken the opporutnity to pursue other interests. In fact, Tama supposed that all that remained from Tomoyo’s lessons was an inability to sleep past five in the morning, no matter how tired she felt. “Of all the things I’d become unable to forget from that hellish triaining,” she grumbled irritably to herself.
The young woman sighed as she entered the building, placing her pajamas into one of the lockers and setting her clean clothes on top of them. At least one perk of being up and about this early was that Tama had the entirety of the baths to herself. And that fact allowed Tama to practice her current hobby, singing without interruption.
One might ask the reason for Tama’s interest in singing, considering that she could already do it well enough for performances. The answer to that would lie in the Mochizuki’s elder sister. Mochizuki Kimiki was not only famed for her short stature, young appearance, and relative inept dating skills, but also for her ability to craft mesmerizing melodies with her voice, further amplified by her chakra. Tama had expressed an interest in learning from her, which was responded to with the following:
[legend="Earlier"]‘Kimiki broke out into a fit of laughter, “Hahahaha! Me? Teach you? As if! The day a brute force monkey like you learns the fine chakra control it takes to manipulate your vocal chords without permanently damaging them is the day I listen to Sonoko and start teaching at the academy. The less I have to deal with precocious brats that have yet to grow up, the better. So get out already you damn person with a successful love life and career! I’m getting pissed just looking at you.”’[/legend]
This, naturally, prompted Tama to go to any lengths to prove her wrong. Sonoko had helped to explain the theory behind it to Tama (she was very interested in getting Kimiki to teach at the academy after all), but Tama was having issues putting it into practice. Fine chakra control was, as Kimiki had so delicately put it, not her forte. Still, the younger Mochizuki was determined to replicate Kimiki’s feats. Her morning bath sessions were the result. Here for a few hours every day she would practice using chakra to alter her vocal chords.
However, after a few weeks of suffering from self-inflicted sore throats, Sonoko’s pitying gaze, and Kimiki’s teasing laughter, even Tama was beginning to realize that there were some things she couldn’t do. So instead she focused on a different aspect of singing, one she knew she was good at, manipulating the air. Technically, it wasn’t how the same as Kimiki’s method, but no one would be able to tell the difference unless they could see the chakra. However there was a noticeable decline in her skill with Tomoyo's teachings. Which made sense as her morning routine of running through the martial forms he had taught her had been replaced with playing in the bath. As she mastered her makeshift vocal techniques, she lost the advanced suppression and cancellation abilities that required regular training to maintain at their top form.
Tama breathed in slowly, she focused on mixing her chakra with the air she held in her lungs. Then she began to sing. Whenever she felt off-pitch, a little vibration from the chakra-enhanced air she was exhaling would get her back in tune. It wasn’t perfect, but it was passable after months of trial and error. In addition to the benefits of being able to instantly correct her mistakes, Tama had also noticed that this technique allowed her to use certain ninjutsu more efficiently and effectively, due to the fact that she was preparing chakra in her body beforehand. The chuunin wondered if it would help her cast genjutsu like Kimiki as well, she hadn’t had an opportunity to test that theory out yet. Eventually Tama would show her perfected craft to Kimiki though, and she couldn’t wait to see the look on her face when she did, but for now more practice was required.
