Character's Physical Description
Hiroe stands at an unimpressive height that leads most around her to believe that she's younger at first glance. At this point in her life, she wears her once long, snow white hair to her shoulder blades, with a symbol of the line she once openly claimed adorning it as a hair clip. She gazes upon everything with violet colored eyes, whose light seems as though its dimmed as she's matured. As though in an attempt to capture all of the events in the world, they are constantly scanning the surroundings of whatever location she happens to find herself within. Being into a mountainous region and remaining in such an area within her youth, she was grew ever accustom to colder environments, making her current dwelling oft unbearable due to the smoldering heat. Due to the time spent within the mountains, it has since left her skin a pale, lighter shade that was likely aided by her near reclusive nature as well. Due to her many aliments when she was younger, she was unable to develop much in the way of physical strength and stamina. As a result, while in her childhood she would frequently become tired and had to rest for periods of time when she overexerted herself, though in recent years there has been stark improvements.
Character's Mental Description
Often dubbed as wise beyond her years when she was younger. At this stage in her life, Hiroe has become a devout pessimist when it comes to viewing the world around her, while being distant to all those who attempt to come near her. From her upbringing and the lessons that were bestowed upon her throughout her childhood, she believes that the course of the universe is set on a path that must be maintained and that the result of that path has already been determined. This brings her to believe that the continued struggle that many attempt when it comes to altering or otherwise fighting against fate is a meaningless struggle. For these purposes she constantly dwells upon the question of why humans, if unable to alter their course in history, have been allowed their continued existence or why some, such as her line, believe they are able to see what the fates have in store. That question being what she wishes to uncover through her life and is now among what has driven her to continue upon what she has viewed to be her own path.

Character History:
Heir to the Shimazu Family
While happy, much dwelt on the mind of her parents.
Five great merchant families were destined to be joined under one banner, under a single name. That name was to be the
Tarumi. War soon erupted within the families, as they each attempted to move into position to take the name for themselves. And soon decades of conflict followed. It would not be until several years after the war had been settled that the heiress to the Shimazu line, one of the five merchant lines, would be born. The sector she was born into was deemed the wealthiest among the merchants, as it held the responsibility for much needed mining operations to continue trading with other nations. The girl, small and sickly when born, was to be named Hiroe, after a strong leader from an earlier age; a woman who legend foretold was able to stave off a rebellion through her might alone. Her parents wished for the strength to be passed into their daughter, whom seemed to suffer aliments from the moment of birth.
However, the Hiroe from this new age seemed a pale comparison to the one from legend. Serious aliments seemed to follow her, no matter how many treatments or physicians attended her, greatly impeding her growth and development. However, she was still regarded as a miracle child by her parents due to their supposed inability to reproduce prior to her birth. She was to be their only child and the next in line to be rightful heir to the seat of the Tarumi line, presently governed by the Shimazu family. From her birth it was taught to her, that it would be her role for the future to sit upon that throne. It was with that belief that she continued to grow and learn the ways of the world she had been born into.
Education in the Shimazu Line
From the moment a child is able to speak they are instructed in the history of not only their own heritage, but that of the continent. Etiquette and other forms of education are brushed upon for a full knowledge of how to govern the people, should it befall upon any member of the house to do so, but the primary form of education for their line is the history of the continent through the Seers religion. Members of their line believe that being able to see where one has traveled, they are able to come nearer to the end of the journey. From their role it is equally important as they have been dubbed by the other four families as the Keepers of Memory, due to the often incredible powers that many within the Shimazu line have claimed were given to them to keep the threads of the world's memory intact and dismay those who attempt to alter or intertwine them.
In her youth, Hiroe was no exception to this way of learning. Quite the opposite, in that she was able to excel in the teachings that were granted to her, due to a focus upon them as she was unable to perform quite a number of other activities, due to her physical impairments. She was quickly able to quote events that had been said to have transpired in their history without the aid of text and place them into her own prospective as to why events occurred as transcribed - often stating ways in which to counter them in great detail. But as she continued to learn of the world as it once existed and continued to exist, she saw the pattern of destruction that was caused when a civilization reached the height of their power, toppling and allowing others to rise.
Reviewing the events, each time something of greater value seemed to be lost for all time. People, nations; even the research from the Seers religion was unable to pierce some veils of the darkness, in order to see into the distant past of their people. This tragedy was something she had learned from her line; if one did not understand the complexity of the past, they could not hope to move toward the future. From the events that were exploding around them - the future the fates had in store for them seemed to be bleak though that could have been very well to their own inability to learn from the mistakes that brought about the conflicts in their world. In her mind, she questioned if it just another act of the fates. For humans to believe that it was themselves, when in fact it was out of their hands entirely.
Change was said to bring about a great many things in their culture, but even things that seemed as though it was through struggle on their part was already predetermined. She could not help then but to wonder why each of those who struggled chose to do so. The woman whose name she had been bestowed had worked so hard to stop the rebellion against the Seers; the wars that had been fought throughout their history. Each of the motivations seemed as though they were connected more with pride than survival, but even at the end of the path pride could not be achieved by walking into the hands of invisible forces.
Placement of Guardians
When children reach the age of six within the Shimazu house the current head of the line selects the first guardian for the child. This guardian acts in the capacity of a shield for the child; ensuring that no harm will fall upon them. It's a tradition that dated back throughout the known history of their line; directly after the Seer religion was founded. None from their line has been able to discern the connection between the two, although the Guardian role has been proven useful when dealing with the others in the region, which has caused the tradition to continue. Beyond the first selected, each member of the house is allowed to select any person they choose to be granted the title of Guardian for their personal use. From the beginning it has been uncommon for more than two parties to be selected for an individual.
As each day passed toward her own coming of age, Hiroe could feel the sparse spark of life within her fade ever more. It was not until she was shown the one that would eventually become closer to her than a sister, that she found the drive to continue her life. That was to be
Nagase Seki. She who was the first to be declared her Guardian. At their first meeting Hiroe was not yet six years of age, while Seki was almost fully grown. Even so, she quickly attached to the young woman as though the woman was a motherly figure. The two quickly became inseparable, as wherever Seki wished to go, even upon duties that Hiroe was not meant to attend due to them being thought of as sacred rituals for the first Guardian of the new generation. No matter how spoiled the child acted within her desires, Seki was slow to be discouraged from her outbursts.
Placement of the Second Guardian
It was when Hiroe was eight years of age that she first met who would become her second Guardian. The circumstances that worked to achieve it were something that she would always carry with her. She was traveling across the rocky terrain that encompassed what would have become her territory; surveying the landscape that many claimed was her destiny to govern in the future. It wasn't her first trip from beyond the borders that her family remained on to govern, but before seemed to be isolated in a greater sense. She was surprised to discover that the act of slavery seemed to be acceptable in the neighboring lands many regions allowed for the selling and purchasing of other humans, so long as they were not deemed of noble birth.
It was nearly time for the sun to begin setting when her carriage began to return home. Leaving for the region nearest to their family's, they passed what appeared to be a caravan. Against the wishes of the accompanying Seki, Hiroe continued to watch as the caravan passed. Each of the chained or caged members, had the same eyes that she had just two years prior to that: the look of a human that wished to have their lives stripped from their body. There was only one that appeared to have remained unbroken, with the fire in her topaz eyes that showed the will to live. Upon seeing that fire, the carriage was ordered to come to a halt before negotiations were underway. All the while that Seki bartered for the woman, Hiroe and the slave never took their eyes away from one another.
When the caravan left them, the woman was still in her cage; the only one to be caged, bound and gagged by the traders. The two stared at one another for what appeared to be ages, as though both were attempting to read the others mind. It was Hiroe who broke the silence when she told her charges to release the bound and gagged woman. Only Seki remained unaffected from the command, while the others who accompanied the young merchant heiress voiced both their outrage and concern over the release of the unknown element. Nothing was said by either the keeper or her guardian until the remaining members of their party cooled their heads; followed by the command being uttered once again; this time by Seki. The others complied, though worried in their own ways as they undid the gag before the bindings.
An invitation was given for the captive woman to ride inside the carriage, where food, drink and a change of clothing would be granted to her. Looking into the eyes of the young Hiroe, she felt captivated enough to lower her guard, though much of it remained. Throughout the trip those who traveled outside the cabin could hear the endless chatter from within, though much of it belonged to their young charge. When the trip was finished the question was presented to the previously enslaved woman; her freedom or her aid in protecting the one to free her. Upon a night's rest within the seemingly large castle that was allotted them, she accepted the offer.
That was to be their first meeting: Shimazu Hiroe and
Godo Yui.
Resurgence of the Merchant War
It all began with a messenger shortly after Hiroe turned nine years of age, informing her father of the betrayal of one of the remaining families. Through their wealth they had amassed a mercenary force which could no longer be contained by those who held seated power. Requesting aid from the other families simply caused them to withdraw, for they wished to have no part in the struggles, content in feeding off the scrapes from the top tier, so long as it meant stability. Sensing the oncoming struggle within their region, her father had no choice but to send his daughter and her guardians away, believing in the safety it would bring. Despite pleading with him, her mother relented, knowing full well that there was a high likelihood whoever remained in their dwellings would not see the upcoming conflict through to the end. Together, they sent for Nagase; entrusting only her with the path needed to escape from the mountains.
It was within the dead of the night that she and Godo removed Hiroe from the encampment they had begun to dwell within. Quickly, quietly, they began to creep through the mountain passes, traveling in areas that from appearance had not seen other travelers for decades. It was in what was supposed to be secret passages only known to the Tarumi trusted that the ambush was enacted. Hoping to use the heir-apparent as a bartering tool, the leaders of the rebellion were attempting to capture her. The three quickly attempted to flee captivity, only to be caught. Each suffered injury, and while none of their wounds were fatal, Yui easily suffered the most as she struggled against once again being bound by chains.
Incensed, Yui would struggle wildly against the chains each waking moment of the day following their capture. Even the soft pleas of Hiroe did nothing to quell the rage that rested in her heart. It was as though she had transformed into a wild beast. And in that form, a decision was made by their captors to put the beast down. They performed the act slowly, piercing her flesh while listening to her wails as a stark contrast to her prior rage, all but ignoring the high pitched cries, begging, and pleading of mercy of the frightened young girl who was their only true goal. Helplessly, she watched the death of the formally strong woman who served as one of her two guardians. Watching in silence as the blood seeped from Yui's wounds, Seki did all she could to quiet the sobs of her young charge, fearing what may come of her cries.
It would take days while in captivity for a chance to present itself for their escape. By that time, it seemed as though the very life within Hiroe had begun to drain. Seki feared that even if they were able to escape, Hiroe would not be able to withstand the arduous journey that surely awaited them. It would bring even her to the brink of death to escape, despite the depth of training she endured for the sake of her young, physically weak charge. It haunted her thoughts on what might have happened should she fall, but nonetheless; they had to escape to ensure the future of the young heiress' life.
And so they began the attempt only for the journey to be wrought with despair and sadness.
Arrival to Sunagakure
Battered and beaten, her clothes tattered and appearing to be on the verge of death; one could not tell that the small child was the heiress to a wealth merchant line by the time she arrived. Malnutrition and dehydration had set in by the time she approached the gates to the village; her vision had begun to blur. For child of her age, wroth with the ailments that had all but crippled her over the years, she had traveled far and seen too much by the time the sentry approached her. Collapsing at his feet, he could do nothing but alert a medical team as she seemed to be unresponsive to everything he attempted, as he awaited orders for her entrance into the Hidden Village. From then it would take weeks for her to open her eyes once again as her small body once again performed its familiar struggle against death's embrace.
When asked her name upon awakening, a frightened Hiroe hesitated to answer; not knowing if her family's name was safe to utter within the confines of the village she found herself in, instead uttering:
Nagase Seki. At hearing the name of the woman who was seemingly family to her, tears began to well in her eyes as despair would swell to fill her heart. From that point the village allowed her to become a ward, but she would be put to work within the village she had stumbled within. It would take several more weeks for her to learn of where she ended up. And it would take a further year for her to broach the thought of entering into the Academy located within Sunagakure. By that point she knew its purpose; one to train soldiers, future combatants to the country of Wind.
Life within the Academy
The phrase "knowledge is power" was gifted to the world. However, it held no truth for Hiroe while she attended the confines of the Hidden Village's academy. To excel within the structure, one needed what was easily her greatest weakness: physical aptitude. Each day that passed ended the same; with her teetering on the verge of unconsciousness. And with each passing day, anger began to swell up within herself at her own weakness. To her there was no longer any use in knowing history, being knowledgeable or believing the fates that governed the world. She missed her family, her Guardians, and her life. Her memories of happiness, warmth, and even her own smiling began to fade from memory. Quietly, loudly, often, no matter who was around her; she cursed her weakened body that had been ravaged by ailments since her birth, wishing for strength enough to allow her to stand tall.
It was with that resolve that she passed the rigors of the Academy in her twelfth year, vowing to serve Sunagakure with her very life.
Life as a Genin
While her mind did little to aid her in her graduation; it did wonders for her once she joined the ranks of the soldiers for her new home. Tactics came naturally to her, as she eased into them as memories of her escape and actions of the woman who became her namesake came flashing into her mind over and over. The details of their attempted escape would flood into her mind, keeping her awake during long missions where she had to rely on such tactics and causing her teammates to grow ever concerned. But she endured, often refusing to allow others to grow close to her, for fear of repeating the tragedies she had already suffered through.
The fall of
Nagase Seki from the cliffs. The death screams of
Godo Yui as she was mutilated before her. Her own escape that led to her being alone in the world. It all still weighed heavy upon her mind and pressed firmly into her subconscious daily; driving her to become more than she was and ever thought she could be.
The Quest of an ANBU in Training
It had been two years since she graduated from the academy when she was called into the headquarters of the ANBU; where she was interrogated by its superiors. They had learned of her true name, heritage, and the conflicts that plagued the lands she hailed from. She would no longer be able to hide behind the name of her fallen Guardian, for they would not allow it. At first hope to the outcome of their revelation appeared bleak, as she resolved herself to death. However, as they continued to discuss matters it appeared as though there was further use to be had from her. It seemed the heiress was needed by them, but not for her title or birthright, but talent in the arts she was born into.
She would be their tool. And they would aid in hiding her identity, for so long as she served them.
Becoming an ANBU
A year removed from what she believed to be certain death. It's been mere weeks since her appointment to the ranks of the ANBU, but she has already been cited for her aura to those her: that of a void, empty of all things but the desire to accomplish the tasks set before her.
