Kamaru sighed as he showed up. He got a few worried expectant looks from others on the scene and the circle of people avoiding the boy sitting against the wall let him know where the boy was.
”That him?” Kamaru asked get a few affirmations quietly.
”What time we figure they died and how long as he been here.” Kamaru asked.
Getting an answer he let out a low whistle, call came in this morning and it was already past midday.
”Well if I got to question him I figure I can’t have him sleepy and hungry and expect to get anything out of him.” Kamaru said not leaving time to comment.
Standing in front of the boy squatting his back to the wall he saw the boy look up at him.
”You’re with me. Come on.” Kamaru simply stated, the boy like in a trance just followed.
Kamaru sat down on the chair the boy looking at him before sitting in the chair next to him once motioned to sit as well. The eatery seemed okay, a little busy, not too cheap not to fancy. A home like aspect although no one was close by crowding them or bothering.
”You hungry?” Kamaru asked looking over the menu. Fortunately he was looking at the boy to see him shake his head no. Kamaru shrugged and ordered and didn’t say much, once his food arrived he dug in since he actually was hungry. He kept glancing at Kamaru occasionally while the man ate. The sound of a small grumpling belly let Kamaru know the boy was hungry.
”You sure?” Kamaru asked between bites as he took a drink.
The boy requested something and Kamaru thought about it for a second. Calling over the waitress he placed the order. It was something the restaurant didn’t serve since they didn’t have the ingredients. Kamaru slide money across the table to the waitress explaining he’d pay in advance, the boy was having a bad day since he had become an orphan now for less than twelve hours. Kamaru explained he’d appreciate the gesture even if it wasn’t that good.
The blunt explanation had the boy looking down his eyes and fist shut tight. The waitress not really knowing how to react apologized and took the money and said she’d see what she could do.
”Didn’t like hearing that huh?” Kamaru commented, it was blatant but Kamaru kind of figured he knew what the boy might be thinking, that it was all a bad dream or some sick joke and his parents would be coming in saying they fooled him any second. The quicker reality actually sunk in the quicker the boy could move on, being haunted and/or hurt by what he saw was something entirely different to deal with.
Kamaru regarded the boy having finished eating with angry in his eyes and a clenched jaw. ”Well at least it got you out of your trance.” Kamaru stated keeping the boy’s angry gaze. ”I’m not going to sugar coat it, you had a horrific experience in your loss. Plus you saw things first hand making it worse. I don’t know what you might feel like nor am I going to sit here and tell you I can understand. It’s your pain and grief, I don’t really have a place in telling you how to feel.” he added.
”Why cause your parents are still alive?” the boy spat out finally in an irritated tone.
”I have no idea, I think they’re dead but I never knew them, granted they probably don’t know if I’m alive or not either so I guess I’m on equal footing with them. I’m not dwelling on my past nor have I since I have a future to think about. What about you?” Kamaru countered. The waitress coming up put a bowl of soup in front of the boy had the two pause the conversation. The boy looked out of sorts seeing the food and seemed hesitate to eat it. Kamaru putting a finger on the rim and pulling it away slowly had the boy suddenly latching on with both hands.
”HEY! I THOUGHT YOU GO THIS FOR ME!” the boy yelped.
Kamaru smirked slightly still pulling the bowl away, ”I figured you still weren’t hungry. Can’t waste food.”
The waitress offered up she thought even if teasing he was being a bit mean to the boy.
Kamaru immediately shot back not taking his eyes off the boy, ”I know he’s out of sorts, his parents just died, he’s in mourning or grieving, whatever you want to call it. He might be for some time, this bowl of soup right now isn’t going to help with that. This is for him telling me about the killer he supposedly saw. Since we don’t have that much on the guy he might be getting ready to leave town.” Kamaru explained. The boy realized what Kamaru was getting on and his expression changed.
”Fine, I’ll tell you what I know… But I get to eat while I talk.” the boy counter offered.
”As long as you don’t spit food out in the process. Anything else? LIke would you like him to come back in ten years or so since he thought you were pretty.” Kamaru said excepting the offer before turning to the waitress.
Both her and the boy turned beet red, ”I never said… she was p-p-p…” the boy began slowly going from stuttering to being silent totally avoiding eye contact with the girl. She excused herself and the boy angrily went back to the bowl and started eating. As he did he eventually started explaining what he saw. Kamaru was surprised he could eat and talk about such things at the same time.
Kamaru wrote down notes of what the boy had said and speculations off of what was mentioned. Kamaru looked up at the waitress who was staring at him and the boy. The boy having mentioned being sleepy had opted to just fall asleep in the booth using Kamaru’s lap as a pillow. Kamaru knew the boy had fallen asleep, still felt his hand clutching onto the material of his pant leg. Although his eyes were shut his face was still wet from silent tears admitting to himself things he probably didn’t want to think about right now. Kamaru blinked at the waitress and motioned her over and asked for someone to run the report to the police station since he was currently predisposed. Kamaru could sit for a bit. Right now the boy seemed to need someone to sit with him.
He had offered to change places with the girl but she scrunched up her face wondering if Kamaru was part demon when it came to teasing people.
The description of the man was somewhat vague, middle aged with long hair and glasses, slightly malnurished or sickly in appearance, carrying a large instrument case with puppets in it. From what the boy explained the man had lured his parents to open the door and assist someone injured and in need of help, once close the figure changed anchoring the two down as another figure revealed itself, both were puppets one second of which attacking first the mother than the father biting into their flesh. From what Kamaru learned after the boy was sent to stay with someone for protection reasons that it seemed to fit someone with the other victims, they all had bite mark injuries of something not animal in nature.. Their bodies altering later probably but why and how were still unknown.
A man fitting the description was brought in and questioning was done. The boy was brought in as well who seemed just as nervous as the killer.
”Can he see and hear me?” the boy asked in a quiet voice.
Kamaru shook his head stated if they change the lighting they would but for now he could.
As the man went through the questions the boy stared at the man, he seemed forth right about questioning and from what he was saying he seemed to no understand the questions leading towards putting him in the area and the actions that lead to the murders. For the most part he had only admitted to being in the area looking for something. He wasn’t sure why he was being asked the ‘odd questions’ though. Looking at the boy he finally looked up at Kamaru.
”That’s the guy who killed my folks.” he finally stated, Kamaru studied him for a second.
On one hand it seemed like a burden was lifted from his shoulders, on the other though a new one was put in it’s place. That he was alone now. Kamaru nodded and tapped the window. The questioning stopped. The interviewed thanked the man and explained the answers they were looking for had been given. The man’s demeanor and expression changed and his roared out yelling threats.
”You think they can stop me! You think they can protect you! I’ll find you! I’ll kill you just like the rest! You can’t hide from me!” he started yelling having the interviewer move to restrain him as he hopped around in the chair he was attached to.
The boy hide behind Kamaru he watched the man now, realizing his feint of innocence was pointless now. Kamaru looked how he looked towards the mirror. Mostly the level his eyes was focused on. Kamaru squatted next to the boy and looked at him before looking back at the man.
”He has no idea who you are? He never saw you?” Kamaru asked the boy.
The boy explained he hide when he first heard a scream, he thought his mom or dad has said something but they had changed and were starting to look funny so he couldn’t understand them and got into a closet and hide till everything was quiet.
Kamaru patted the boys head and asked him to wait outside. He’d make sure the man thought someone else was pointing him out.
Outside the boy didn’t hear Kamaru request the pictures of the dead couple and what they had looked like. He instructed the police detective in the room with him to look away since it wouldn’t be pretty. The murder looked at the mirror knowing it was two sided, he was being restrained but he knew someone was on the other side, had they seen what he could do? Were they scared now? Would they still try and get him arrested for the murder.
The lights altered in the side room and the mirror became a window of sorts, to a horror he hadn’t thought to see. See it he wasn’t sure what it had been, man or woman, the disfugred body. The mishappened hand partial with a pincher claw rested on the glass, the blob of flesh may have been human once but by the looks of it had lost it’s humanity and visage. A mouth dropped open in an unhuman like manner and the impression of a creature howling filled the man’s mind. Eyes, still human looked at him with recognition, with anger, with hate. With a lust to kill. The man tried to kill out of his chair and move farther from the window.
”Oh God! Keep it away! Keep it away! No! Nooo! Nooooo!” the man babbled out starting to hyperventilate. He vomitted on himself while trying to curl into a ball, his mind trying to wrap around the idea of one of his victims having survived. The forced transformation turned them into something, he had no idea how or what they had become, everyone had just died he thought in the painful process. He had felt power over the simpletons he never had to stare at one of his creations or think about feeling their wrath.
As the lights dimmed and the mirror changed back to a mirror the detective inside the room with Kamaru wiped his mouth putting down the trash can he had suddenly needed after Kamaru’s transformation.
”That looked a lot scarier than the dead bodies… did you just imagine that up? Or was that something you’ve actually ‘seen’” the man asked after his cought had subsided.
”Some things I wish were just nightmares, but it was a cross between the dead bodies you’ve found and something I’ve seen, no idea if it was truely living… Somethings are best to just think of as nightmares, because ‘being’ something like that and having to living is much scarier I think.” Kamaru commented with a hardened tone.
Once with his scenses back the man started to confess several things about what he had come in contact with and how he had discovered what he had on his puppet.
”That him?” Kamaru asked get a few affirmations quietly.
”What time we figure they died and how long as he been here.” Kamaru asked.
Getting an answer he let out a low whistle, call came in this morning and it was already past midday.
