Often times Chouko is outspoken. She often spaces out no matter what she's doing. Chouko can be clumsy and trip over air and forget how to speak when something makes her nervous. She is kind and will almost always put someone else's welfare over her own. She is also determined to accomplish her goals no matter what it costs her.

Chouko grew up in a loving household, however her father killed in a mission. Afterwards, Chouko's mother contracted an unknown disease that caused her pain at the lightest touch. Some kids from her village heard about her father's death and began picking on her. They would never lay a hand on her, but instead called her father a weak coward and told her that he deserved his death. Dealing with this everyday grew to be too much for Chouko and she attempted to take her own life. Having chosen hanging as her method, she went about setting up the noose in her room. She climbed onto a chair to place her head in the noose and before she could give it a second thought she jumped. As the noose tightened around her throat she felt pain. After reaching the end of the drop, her neck had not broke. She struggled to breathe and clawed at her throat to try to get rid of the pain. She felt her mind going numb as she passed out into blissful darkness. She later awoke in her village's medical building. When she woke up a nurse ran out of the room and came back in with a doctor. After looking her over thoroughly, the doctor looked at her sternly before sighing deeply and told her that her mother was in critical condition. He continued to tell Chouko how her mother had cut the noose from Chouko's neck and carried her to the hospital despite the immense pain that the contact caused her. When the doctor asked if she would like to see her mom, Chouko responded that she wouldn't be able to take the guilt seeing her mom in so much pain because of her. Chouki realized now that she had to do something to help her mother and decided to become a medical ninja. Everyday at the medical building Chouko would ask her doctor to teach her about medicine. After years of studying under her doctor, the doctor told her that he couldn't teach her any more. He recommended that she enroll as a ninja in the Village of Mist as a medical ninja. Trusting her doctor's judgment, she decided to travel to the village to enroll on her doctor's recommendation.
