BAM!
BAM..BA-BOOM!
Panting heavily, Yuichi straightened up before placing his hands akimbo on his waist. He wearily glanced at the training dummy that he had been using. It was one which the dojo had claimed was extra durable, but by now, the surface was clearly worn and full of splinters. Eyeing his handiwork, the veins around his eyes popped slightly as he viewed the tool through a different Sight. Almost as quickly as they had popped, the veins around his eyes gradually settled back in. Giving a tired sigh, Yuichi knocked on the dummy gently with the back of his hand. Almost comically, the tool crumpled into a multitude of small pieces with a deafening crack, exploding and spewing sawdust every which way into the air. Coughing, Yuichi waved his hand around to clear the dust away. He then flopped down into a sitting position and propped himself up with his arms behind him, still trying to catch his breath. However, he quickly gave up this feeble attempt at staying upright and simply let his arms give out. His head cracked a bit sharply with the rough ground, but at the moment he couldn’t care less. Exhaling deeply, he stared at the ceiling briefly before closing his eyes.
That….was at least the twentieth one today….the instructor’s definitely going to kill me this time…
Why was he doing all of this at all to begin with? That he could now pulverize iron wood from the inside out with just some basic Soft Striking was testament to the fact that he had grown stronger in these past year. However, it wasn’t enough. It wasn’t nearly enough. He shivered slightly as even this thought alone triggered a flashback of the waves of unidentified chakra crashing down onto the beast they had been hunting for an exam; it all seemed so trivial now. What could only have been explained as a whim of nature had completely wiped out one of the major Villages. Even with all of their abilities combined, no one could do anything about the situation at all. No matter what they tried, no food could grow, no heat could be maintained, sickness could not be curbed, and more importantly, no clue about the chakra that had caused the Frost could be found at all. It simply came, and swallowed everything in its path.
In all honesty, the ones who had managed to run at all had been lucky. The Village of Stone, for whatever reason, had extended a helping hand towards the Village of Mist’s fleeing residents. Disregarding whatever reasons that the Kage of the Village had for mandating such a thing against a competing power, the residents themselves were indiscriminate. They took kindly to the malnourished and tired individuals who had managed to make their way to their Village, congratulating them on surviving the journey. It had seemed a strange sort of way to welcome individuals fleeing from a natural disaster, but after having settled into a small cottage on the border between Maruishi and Iwagakure, Yuichi finally began to understand more of the thoughts and logic behind the actions of the natives of his new home. The concept of teleos was one which struck a particularly resonant chord with him.
He remembered the first time that one of the Iwa elders resting by the Circle of Five approached him about the subject. The old man had started lecturing Yuichi about his flashy gi, saying that it had no practical use on the battlefield, and that wearing something like this was only going to get him killed. At that moment, the only thought in Yuichi’s head was surprise that this old man had even managed to pick his presence out from the crowd that was mulling about; it would have been an unimaginable event if he had still been back in the Village of Mist. As such, Yuichi sat down properly to listen to the ramblings of the old man. While interesting, he couldn’t say that he was particularly convinced of many of the things that those of the Village of Stone believed. The rituals were interesting, but in the end, he had simply lived too long in the Village of Mist to become accustomed to the way that they thought about things. However, eventually, after the elder found out that Yuichi was one of those who had fled from Mist, he began lecturing Yuichi about teleos. As he continued to talk, Yuichi couldn’t help but feel fascinated at what he was talking about.
The old man spoke of challenges and hardships, and of the steps that one must take to overcome them. Each step that one took brought one that much closer to completeness. This completeness was the peak of physical and mental strength, and an absolute sort of power. It was the sort of power that could take control of all the elements, of the passage of time, and even wrangle with and rewrite whatever ill fortune that fate had in store for him and those he cared for.
If he had had this sort of power and strength back then, could the outcome have been different? Could he have saved the two who had saved his life? Could he really go back and prevent the Frost from ever coming? However, seeing the slightly crazed look in his eyes, the elder had simply suddenly stopped talking. He had given Yuichi a bittersweet smile; a look that was sad, yet compassionate that told him all that he needed to know. It was one thing to strive for the ideal, but there was nothing that could bring back those already dead as they were. If there were any such thing, it was an evil that should not have been touched – an unnatural and abhorrent rip in the fabric of existence.
The only thing he could do was strengthen himself, and build up his own strength, so that when the time came that the one he cared for was reborn into this world, he, or his descendants, would have enough power to truly protect not only themselves and their own loved ones, but also these reborn individuals who would be at their weakest at that time. It was this ideal that was currently driving him, and because of the obvious nature of his actions that the instructor of this dojo was even putting up with the wanton destruction that Yuichi was wreaking on his equipment.
Speak of the devil…
Pulling in his legs, Yuichi sat up as straight as he could as the door to the isolated training room burst open. The stocky instructor stomped up to Yuichi as fast as his pudgy feet could take him. Without even stopping to take a look at the wrecked piece of equipment, he roared into Yuichi’s face. Yuichi could vaguely smell the scent of alcohol on his breath.
“YOU IMBECILE! HOW MANY DOES THAT MAKE?!”
“…This one has broken twenty-two this day, sir.”
“TWENTY-TWO? TWENTY-TWO?! T-…twenty-two? *hic* You serious, bro?”
Collapsing down onto the ground as well, the instructor pulled out a bottle and took another loud swig. Swallowing the drink with a loud gulp, the instructor let the hand with the bottle fall down to his side. Sighing, the pudgy man fell onto his back, staring at the ceiling just like Yuichi had been doing earlier. After a short while, he began to speak.
“Say, sonny…you’re plenty strong already. What is it you’re reaching for?”
“…Teleos.”
“HA. Don’t speak like you even know what that means, you foreigner *hic*.”
A small silence fell between the two. This wasn’t the first time that they had had this conversation. They both knew that he didn’t mean what he said. By this time, the instructor had no doubt that even among the Iwa-nin who regularly showed up for lessons, Yuichi had a drive to achieve teleos that only the most devout Believers had. A suddenly serious expression on his reddened face, the instructor turned his eyes onto Yuichi’s obviously tired form.
“So…? Any progress? Feel any stronger yet?”
“…This one…doesn’t think so.”
“…”
Another silence fell between the two. Sitting up suddenly, the instructor turned to look at Yuichi with a stern look. However, the suddenly serious atmosphere was broken by all the drinks that the instructor had imbibed. He grimaced as he held his head in his hands, mumbling something about how the earth was shaking. Yuichi merely waited until this common occurrence passed; this man wasn’t one to do anything without reason, and if he had given him a stern look earlier, it was because he had something important to say. After a couple more minutes of silence, the instructor finally stopped rocking and sat up straight once more. He gave Yuichi a stern look before speaking.
“Genin Yuichi…”
He stopped talking, his stern look suddenly converted into one that pierced through Yuichi. Yuichi could only sit still and stare back, for some reason getting the impression that he was staring up at the top of a steep wall from the bottom of a valley; it was a feeling that made him feel like he had finally gotten a glimpse at the true form of one who had almost reached the Peak. A few silent minutes passed once more before the instructor began talking again.
“Genin Takamura Yuichi…Despite the *ahem* quantity of drinks I have had so far…I have not seen any man more fitting to inherit this technique from me. However…I will not teach it to you.”
Reaching into his robes, the instructor pulled out a shabby-looking scroll, before holding it out towards Yuichi.
“Take it with your own hands. Teach it to mind. Learn it with your own body. It’s not going to be easy, but make this technique yours, and I guarantee that you will at least have taken a step towards the Peak.”
Of course it wasn’t going to be easy. There was no value in taking the easy path to strength. There would be no sustenance to such an empty power. He looked at the scroll, and then once more into those piercing eyes.
There was no need to hesitate.
Yuichi reached out and took the scroll.
It smelled a like the dried squid snacks that the instructor usually had with his beer.
And so began the days of hellish conditioning.
It was an ancient technique known only as Hachimon. It was a simple name for a theoretically simple concept. The body had eight separate Gates that controlled the chakra within any given body. By carefully prying opening said gates, one could cause various types of effects to occur as the chakra flowed through in amounts that normally would not have flowed. However, the reason that the gates have evolved in creatures to behave as such almost universally was that with this extra flow of chakra, the physical body simply could not endure.
Every day, Yuichi ended up training until he vomited up blood. Sometimes, it didn’t even take long for this to happen. One small misstep and his internal chakra balance would go haywire. He was lucky in that he had his Sight to aid him in his training, but he couldn’t even imagine the types of trial and error that those who created this technique would have had to go through to fully develop this technique. The worst part was that even after vomiting up blood, that was only the signal to stop practicing the Internal portion of the skill. There was still an External portion that he had to complete on a daily basis; if he failed to do so, his physical body wouldn’t be able to keep up with what the Internal Arts could unleash.
There were days that he simply felt that he couldn’t continue. There were days where he literally couldn’t move from the backlash of the training techniques themselves. However, despite this, he still pushed on, doing what he could. One step at a time, he was going to become someone who would be able to call himself Complete. He would be able to protect those who have been dear to him, the ones who are dear to him, and those who will become dear to him – he would be able to become someone able to protect them all.
And finally, a year later, he was finally able to open them all.
The power circulated from his core outwards, burning as it passed the first gate. His legs suddenly felt like he could use them to dodge any attack that came his way. As the burning sensation spread and engulfed his legs, his chakra continued to surge through, breaking through the second gate. As the chakra passed through, he suddenly felt a surge of vitality. His entire body felt like it had been rejuvenated, like nothing could break him. The chakra gained momentum, in a sudden surge of urgency breaking through the third and fourth gates all at once. Yuichi grit his teeth as his skin suddenly split in a multitude of places. The blood specks flew outwards, only to be incinerated by the chakra that he was now emitting. The wounds quickly closed up before suddenly opening again. He felt a surge of refreshment, as if he had just woken up on after a good night’s sleep. Despite this, his joints were starting to creak. However, just this wasn’t going to be enough to stop him.
Giving a guttural roar, Yuichi pushed the chakra on his own accord, breaking through the fifth, sixth, and seventh gates all at once. His body screamed in rebellion, the pain through his entire body throbbing in his head. However, even that couldn’t compare to the sudden surge of strength and mental focus and fortitude that he felt. It was almost as if he could see through and break through any falsehoods with just one more push. Finally, he pushed his chakra through the final, eighth gate. In that single moment, Yuichi felt as if he had reached a new understanding of what it felt like being at the peak physical condition a human could hope to achieve.
Of course, it was only for that moment. A moment after, his body finally gave out. His ribs cracked with an audible crunch. Immediately letting the gates close once more, Yuichi collapsed onto the ground, a bloody, sweaty mess. Soon after, the door to the inner sanctum burst open, the instructor standing there with a bewildered look on his face.
“What in the Five’s Names happened? I heard you from two blocks over!”
Apparently, it hadn’t only boosted his physical strength. With a feeble, raspy breath, Yuichi managed a small smile as he spoke.
“This one…Has seen half of the Peak…”
As soon as he finished, he collapsed onto the ground. He could just barely hear what the instructor was saying, but he was honestly just too tired to care. He’d have to start the exercises again tomorrow but…for today…
It’s probably alright to take a short break, right? Ojii-chan…Obaa-chan…
