There was a feeling of abject despair that came from every descent into the Tarterian Specus. It was as if every functional design of the Hidden Cloud’s prison were designed to drain the soul of joy and hope. Every surface was either a clinical white with several chipping coats of paint, peeling linoleum in sickening mint green. For every clean surface, there were two more elements of machinery or barricades made of dense iron and greased with filth. Here, the inmates were often restless, sometimes docile, or twisted, but always former shinobi stripped of that title. Indeed, it was considered an act of cruelty to have non-shinobi serve sentences among shinobi who could likely abuse them. Even with the connection to their chakra severed by layers of sealing techniques and technology with patents under lock and key. Typically, criminals were placed by their ranks, which were adjusted according to their crimes and skills at the time of their incarceration. Petty criminals were kept at the top of the facility, which was still surface level within the village. Much of the facility ran deep underground into the mountain, with the absolute worst criminal scum kept at the very bottom.
Not even Anatsu Uchiha had earned a place amongst the very bottom levels of the Tarterian Specus. There remained shinobi so dangerous that layers of seals and trapped passageways kept them away from each other and the guards, for mutual safety. They were effectively known as Double S Rank Criminals; ones who were wiped from records and officially unheard. A place for shinobi who would have been put to death if such a decision were possible.
Even the likes of Kaji Okada was glad that he was not venturing down to the bottom floors just to deal with Anatsu Uchiha. Alas, the spiral downward only brought Kaji to the S-rank floor, which was mostly empty. In actuality, the crimes of Anatsu were hardly A-Rank at best, but his dangerous potential as a gifted Uchiha meant placing him where countermeasures to his dojutsu were plentiful. By the time Kaji had come, he was informed that the inmate was already brought into the chamber. So Kaji traveled down a squealing elevator for what seemed like infinite floors. He was in the company of two masked ANBU who kept eerily silent and wore the white regalia of the containment specialists who brought Anatsu into custody a week ago. “You know, I won’t bite,” Kaji said, breaking the tense silence amongst the masked ones in the elevator, yet they said nothing in response. “They treating you guys alright down here? Like, do you want a raise or something? Cuz man, this is the pits.” He was sure offering a raise would make them budge, but wow were those boys professionals. “Sheesh.”
Once the elevator ride concluded, the Grand Commander was escorted to an entry point of barricaded double doors, which led to two more sets of thick bars, which only raised by cranking a pulley system outside that required both white-clad ANBU to turn them at once. Passing through there, Kaji met with another masked operative who gave him a debrief: “Greetings Lord Okada… The Uchiha has been placed within the barricaded chamber and has been prepped for the deposition. A week without nourishment, per regulation, with some encouragement from the guards…” she paused to swallow a knot in her throat, “to coax him into a compliant state. A review team has gathered in the monitoring chamber, per regulations, and will provide feedback with a verdict once a consensus has been reached. You are free to commence when you are ready, my Sennin.” The petite operative took a few steps back, eager to get away from the doors when Kaji unlocked them and entered. The sound of locks sliding rang behind Kaji as he emerged before the man of the hour.
“Anatsu Uchiha, we meet again” taunted Kaji as he strode into the chamber, heading right up to the window of the round holding cell that kept his prisoner. Kaji stood before the prisoner with his hands folded behind his back, looking the same as he did in their last encounter. “And I’m hoping you recognize me this time… Get up. I want you to come here and face me like a man, and remember who I am. Years ago, I warned you to never set foot in this land again— I showed you mercy and yet here you are, a fool facing the inevitable.” The stinging remarks were enough to inspire retaliation, but if the week in custody had promised anything, it was that the holding cell was neutralizing Anatsu’s ability to mold chakra, much like the chains placed upon him. Even attempting to manifest his Sharingan would come at the cost of incredible pain.
“I could go on but this isn’t a roast it’s a trial… You are here to answer for your deeds: a mile-long list that includes the murder of cloud shinobi and false declarations of war with the Hidden Leaf. I’m sorry they didn’t feed you at all this week… Personally, I prefer to be taken out to dinner at least once before I’m fucked.”
