The Youkou Doro
Aptly named, the Youkou Doro (Crimson Mud) is a large, multi-floored bath house painted a bright, almost garish red. Trimmed with gold and banners of many colors, its exterior is both awe inspiring and an eyesore. Its lavish and over the top appearance isn’t too surprising, when one considers its owner. Madame Youkou is a plump woman who appreciates opulence and luxury, and this reflects in her establishment. The interior of the bath house isn’t as intense as its outer shell, but is still quite a bit to take in. Once one enters, you're greeted by a slew of bubbly young women, all dressed in flowing and barely-there outfits who kindly offer to take your footwear and escort you anywhere in the onsen that you wish to go. If you’re a bit hungry the dining area offers a variety of dishes and drinks to suit any pallet, and the friendly young females are more than willing to put on a show to go with your meal. The indoor/outdoor baths take up the entire first floor and are truly a site to behold, all made of smooth dark stone. Perhaps one of the many rooms in the upper floors would interest you more, if you are tired or seeking… other forms of entertainment.
However, the main attraction - and that for which the onsen was named – is the specialty red mud bath located at the center of the outdoor baths. The nutrients and minerals found in this specialty work wonders on your skin, although first timers might find the slimy texture odd. The muddy substance is a rich, deep red color, and is rather thick. It’s suggested that anyone desiring to take a dip in this particular pool do so without any kind of clothing, as you might permanently ruin them.
Regardless of what you choose to do, you are sure to enjoy yourself should you spend your time here.
