Songbirds couldn’t be hard over the incessant pounding of Kenbu’s hammer on his father’s latest project. A smile on the boy’s face couldn’t was getting a bit infectious as his father started smiling more than he usually does. With each strike, the boy tries to look at his father, trying to see if his father approves, if what he did was right. The older just nods at his son, his expression urging the boy to keep on going. This was what they did every day. Waking up at four thirty to set everything up at the forge, then waking up his son as Hinano sets their breakfast. They, excluding Kohaku, eat together in peace, enjoying the peace before the morning sun. They were not like most families who have to talk and be a bit noisy to enjoy their time together. And Kenbu likes it that way. Quiet but happy. They have short conversations, mostly about mundane things. And then the father and son duo start their smithing whilst Hinano washes the dishes and proceeds to go to the market. She kisses both of them goodbye and this is it.
It was at about seven thirty in the morning that Hinano came back with an excited expression on her face, and a mission scroll in hand. Kenbu recognized said scroll as it was included in the academy introductory assembly. Kenbu looked at his father for permission and he got a nod. Excitedly, Kenbu gave the hammer to his father, wiped his hands on his shorts and ran to get the scroll. His father told him to read it out loud as he also wanted to know what his son’s first mission would be. He explained that it was probably gonna be an easy E-ranked mission. When asked what that entails, he explained probably everyday chores and that nothing dangerous were assigned to genin and below. His aunt came back outside with his cousin Kohaku. All sat on the bench as Kenbu began reading the scroll.
“Tetsumaki Masashi, 50 years of age, is especially requesting Harutakenawa Kenbu to deliver two boxes of Tin cans to Nishida Megumi. Details will be given upon arrival of said student.”
His asked his father who Tetsumaki-san was. He was told that he had delivered a kunai set to the man before. He was also told Nishida Megumi lived ten blocks away from Tetsumaki-san. Hinano went back inside to get something that will probably help him get there safely. Kohaku then took the time to pull him aside and ask him all kinds of missions. He let the seven year old take a look at his scroll before explaining to the child what it meant. He also told Kohaku all his dreams of becoming a good older brother to him, a great ninja to Stone Village, and a great blacksmith. Kohaku then told him he would help in any way he could and that he would support his ninii all the way. It at this time that his Aunt gave him a shell comb and told him to go to a certain Nanami and ask about a small wagon he could borrow. He nodded, kissed Kohaku, Aunt Hinano, his father and then Kohaku again – he insisted to be kissed again – before going out.
The boy started his journey towards Nanami-san. He turned left at the first alley and walked to the general good store he was pointed to by a certain stranger he asked along the way. He showed her the shell comb and he was given a small wagon. He was asked why and he told her about his first mission and he was given a small pink horn and said to show it to Akagi before he went home after delivering his goods. He thanked her and started his journey, whistling along the way. Being famous among some shinobi as the son of the blacksmith, by the time he reached Tetsumaki-san’s place, he already had his pockets full of candy and chocolate. With a mouthful of chocolate, he asked for the boxes he was to deliver. After a few minutes of hearing about the man’s life story, he was finally given two tin boxes. He placed them on his wagon and thanked the man for the mission and proceeded to go Nishida-san’s place. Pulling his wagon with one hand, he started his journey, stopping every now and then to eat chocolate and candy. The journey would’ve lasted only 45 minutes he didn’t stop every now and then to eat but he did so it took him almost two hours. Aside from eating chocolates and candies, he also stopped to buy water, window shop and stare at street entertainers along the way.
At long last, when he arrived at the destination, he knocked on the door and he greeted by a motherly woman who kissed and pinched his cheeks before taking his load off him and was told to wait a while. He was given a letter to be given to Tetsumaki-san and a bag of pastries to eat along the way. After a tight hug, kiss on the cheek and a hard pinch on his nose, he scrunched his face and walked away with a smile on his face. He came back two minutes later to ask about a Akagi-san. He was pointed a few meters east and there he went. He showed a pink horn and he was then told to wait. He did and later said man told him to follow him somewhere. They ended up riding a small open carriage with his wagon and chocolates intact. The man told him a lot of stories and they shared his goodies as the man told good stories. Once they were at Tetsumaki-san’s place, he gave the tinsmith the piece of paper Nishida-san gave him. It was then that he as thanked and told payment would be delivered to him by courier. He asked about the training and was told that a letter would come regarding their training schedule and he thanked the man wholeheartedly. He returned to Akagi-san’s carriage they went straight home to his father who thanked Akagi-san. The carriage-owner waved him goodbye and he stated he wanted them to go out together again sometime. Akagi nodded and went off. After greeting his father and Aunt, he went straight to Kohaku’s room and told him about his day.
