Winds gently guided Kahako’s hair as she journeyed through the forests throughout the village. “Suiko-chaaaan” Kahako called as loud as she could. The chirping of birds coupled with rustling leaves, however, was the only response. She waited for a few seconds before moving quickly through the forest to call out the child’s name again in a different area. “Pippiri-kuuuun,” she tired this time, remembering the name of the dog that was supposed with the girl when she disappeared.
Suddenly, Kahako picked up a shout in the distance. “PIPPIRI!” Kahako paused only long enough to find the direction it came from and sprinted. The chakra that fueled her legs left behind indentations in the ground, on tree trunks, anywhere she placed her foot to propel her closer to the scream.
The forest thickened the further she moved in. Jumping past a large oak, Kahako came across what looked to be a splatter of blood. She paused in horror. ‘Please, Raiden-sama! I can’t be too late!’ Urgency filled her as she screamed the child’s name again. “Suiko!!”
What responded however made Kahako’s stomach drop in fear. Mid-leap, something collided with the MiT. Disorientation filled her head as she skidded into the ground. The large thing landed on top of her, pinning her arms and banging her head against the tree roots that covered the forest floor. A grunt of pain emitted from her lips as Kahako felt something splash on her face. Kahako’s mind jumped into gear as she opened her eyes…
…and stared right back at Pippiri’s glossed over ones. Deep growling filled the air as the puppy’s body was flung away from her eyesight. In its place, Kahako met the whites of something more ferocious. Holding her down was a giant Inuzuka. But this one was different compared to the ones she saw around the villiage. However, split second reaction was all Kahako had in order to survive, and she used it immediately. Just as the creatures teeth came down for her neck, Kahako forced chakra through her legs and kicked the creature as hard as she could. There was a yelp as the monstrosity jumped, giving Kahako the leverage she needed to throw her weight against her opponent and roll away. In less than a second, Kahako was on her feet and a kunai was in her hand. Now that she had a better position, she got a good look at the dog.
To say its fur was a matted mess was an understatement. This creature was malnourished, and gashes flanked its sides. However, there was something weird about its eyes. Unlike any animal she had seen, this one’s eyes were a pale white. And there were no pupils. The creature circled Kahako slowly. The blood vessels around its eyes could be seen bulging through the fur. “Keiji,” Kahako said in horror as she realized exactly what she was seeing. She was looking at the eyes of a Hyuuga… in an inuzuka dog.
As if it heard her, the creature leapt for Kahako. Diving to the right, the kunoichi made roundhouse kick to the creature’s flank. The animal yipped again as the force of the kick pushed the creature away from the girl. To any normal man, the kick would have broken bone. However, all Kahako felt was solid muscle. It was clear that this creature had been tested on.
Not giving the creature time to rest, Kahako ran and jumped into a leaping kick. With a slight shift of its ears, the animal just barely dodged her foot. A crater was left in her foot’s wake. A small strangled scream came from above Kahako, and she paused to look up, catching the terrified eyes of Suiko clinging to a branch.
This was all the distraction the inuzuka needed. Recovering from its balance, it charged Kahako, grabbing onto her arm and jerking its head as if to try and tear it off. Kahako screamed in pain as she was pulled along with her arm across the ground. She felt her flesh tear dangerously, the pain nearly causing her to pass out.
Desperately, Kahako took the kunai in her hand and made a motion to stab the dog in its throat. Just as quickly as it had grabbed onto her, the creature let go and leapt away. Once again they were at a standstill, the silence of the forest only broken up by its growls. Both of them were injured, but Kahako moreso. ‘I’m in over my head.’ She thought desperately as the wild dog geared up for another attack.
Something in the distance caught the creature’s attention. Ears perked up to a noise that Kahako couldn’t hear, twitching too and for as if receiving a radio signal. With one final growl, the animal slowly backed away from Kahako before making a swift exit.
She stood there for a second, unsure of what exactly just happened. But her wonder would have to wait as she heard the cries of the little girl above her. “Pippiri,” came a heartbroken snivel as the girl clung to the tree. Kahako looked to where she had last seen Pippiri’s body fly. Her heart fell. Even from this distance, Kahako knew that Pippiri didn’t make it out of today’s fight. What hurt more was that he was probably the reason Kahako herself was still alive.
But the sun was setting, and she had a mission to complete and her own wounds to heal. “Suiko-chan. You can come down now. It’s safe. Your parents had me come to find you,” Kahako called to her.
The girl slowly climbed down from her tree, tears streaming down her face. When she reached the bottom, Kahako gave a quick glance over the girl. She sported a few scratch marks and one particularly nasty gash across her face to which Kahako was able to heal quickly. Kahako lead the crying girl out of the forest. This time however, Kahako kept her kunai out until they were back safely in the residential area of Kumo.
As soon as she dropped off the child at her parent’s house, Kahako headed back to the Torre. She had to report her findings. It was odd. That animal had been tested on. And since it attacked her, the village needed to know that there was a possible monster on the loose. After that she would head to the hospital for her own injuries. She needed to find some answers to her questions as well.
