Poison is what is known as an "Advanced Element". Jutsu in the Poison family utilize a combination of primarily Wind and secondarily Fire chakra to produce effects that imitate those of physical poisons, slowly killing the victim from within.

It is only through proper combination of the two that one may access and eventually master the Poison element.
