Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

Ame seemed to be excited at the prospect of getting some info on her future goals. So much so that she bit off more than she could chew. Plopping in the rest of her sweet, she started coughing and patting on her chest. Megumi would stand up and motioned over to Ame, to save the choking girl. While Yume signaled for some water and one of the servers zipped to the girl with water. Downing the rest of her tea, she croaked out out her thanks to Megumi for offering to teach her.

With the crisis averted and the staffed and rest of the patrons calmed from the brush with death. Turning to Yume, with a cold and monotone expression and speech. Ame would brush her off as if she was a speck of dust on her shoulder. The comment instantly froze the idol’s smile and she tried to play if off with a laugh. Megumi turn back to the girl that treated Yume, so rudely after she could've helped her get in touch with others in the medical field. It was not right, she did nothing to the girl, except show her kindness. Megumi would not let this happen to one of her friends. Megumi stared at the Ame silently for a bit, before she was about to ask what has came over her. Hearing Yume, talk about letting them get back to work. Megumi turned her attention to Yume who gave her a half hearted stare as she commented on her and the managers differences. “ Wait Yume hold on”. Megumi was trying to get her to wait, a beep echoed off her and she panicked as she rushed out the door. Megumi wanted to stop her and sort this whole mess out, but she looked as if she was in a hurry. She would have to apologise about this later, as she did not deserve the treatment she was giving.

Sighing as looked back over to Ame, with a less than impressed expression. Letting her finish her tea and see her displeased look as she finished her drink. “ I know this has not been the best day for you, but there was no need to take it out on my friend who did nothing back treat you with kindness”. Finishing the rest of her tea and getting a another drink she would ask if she would like something else as well before they got started.

She knew she had been mean. She knew there could have been a kinder way to address Yume. There was so much so could have that would have been better. But she hadn’t. At first, she didn’t realize that they she spoke came out so rude. She looked down into the cup of water, gripping the sides, watching her fingers slip against the perspiration.

“We needed to study, right?” she said softly, almost inaudible. “I’m sorry,” she whispered out, hiding behind her bangs. She grabbed at her last mochi, taking small, mouse-like bites. She felt small and embarrassed for the way she had acted. But she quickly pushed back the embarrassment, not wanting it to get out of control. “I don’t…deal well with people,” she said, still not meeting the gaze of the girl in front of her. “What happened at the library had nothing to do with it.”

Looking anywhere but at Megumi, she observed the tiny tea shop. There were people everywhere, smiling, talking with each other, having a good time. All things Ame was jealous of but could never show. She opened and closed her mouth several times, carefully choosing her next words.

“I…I want to make it up to her. If I can,” the words were hard to speak. This was not her character. She was not sympathetic of the things she did or said. She simply did them and walked away. The overwhelming feeling of guilt washed over her and she looked behind her at the front windows. The sun was still shining brightly, no one was looking at the sky at a storm that Ame was sure was supposed to happen. Confused, she clutched at her chest over where he heart lay just below, turning around and finally looking at Megumi.

Megumi words seemed to have affected Ame. As the blue haired girl looked at the beads of precipitation roll down the cup of water. Sliding her fingers against the cup Megumi was getting sick of the silent treatment. Growing more impatient, with the girl to speak out, a mouse like voice creeped to into her mind. Hearing her say that they needed to study, was not an excuse to be rude to someone.

Megumi was about to yell at the girl, when she continued with an apology. Ame was already hiding behind her hair and speaking so low that it was almost impossible to hear her. Yelling at her would just cause her to freeze and shut down. She would nibble at her food, and look everywhere but Megumi. Hearing another excuse and that the library incident had nothing to do with it. Megumi was getting tired of the girl not looking at her.

The two would sit in silence as Megumi waiting for Ame to look at her and tell her what she was going to do about her mistake. Finally, Ame spoke something of worth to her. Thinking about how this was similar to her first meeting with Yume. She could not help, but to let out a small smile. Looking at Ame as she looked around then clutched her chest and bared her heart to her. Looking out the window and was surprised and slightly proud of how the girl control her gift. Moving her chair over to Ame, Megumi would put her hand on top of Ame’s hand that clenched her chest. Showing a kind expression she would look at her friend, “ Don’t worry when we see her again you can apologise”. Megumi would ponder on something before she continued, “ I made the same mistake to when i first met her. I was studying in the library, when she was holding a alem sighing”. her complexion tinted slightly red as she thought back to what happened. “ I yelled at Yume and her fan based and caused a scene that closed the sighing”. Looking slightly embarrassed about her past actions. “ I course apologised for my actions and offered to help in order to make it up to Yume”. Not making eye contact, with Ame as she was embarrassed and she had not told anyone about her secret. “ While i was suppose to just work as a personal assistant to her, something had another plan for me. The model that Yume was suppose to shoot with, got sick and i happened to look very similar to her”. Megumi’s voice would go very low and she would fidget in her seat as she built up the courage to continue. “ So i helped and model for a magazine with Yume”.

The two would go silent again as Megumi was starting to look more red then her sweets. She had never told anyone about her short modelling career, but she felt a kinship to Ame. Maybe it was her maternal instincts kicking in, but she wanted to care for and teach the young girl. Removing her hand and fixing her clothes. “ Now let’s leave the past behind us and get to work, we will cross that bridge with Yume when we come to it. For now are goal was knowledge and sweets. Giving the girl a smile as she tossed their mistakes aside.

Ame listened as Megumi admitted to something that obviously quite embarrassing. She could see Megumi doing well in the modeling career. Her blue eyes stuck out gorgeously against raven black hair. She definitely had the looks for it.

She softly brushed her sea blue hair behind her eye, feeling a bit more comfortable in showing her face and far less embarrassed after hearing Megumi’s experience. She was happy to know that there would be a chance to apologize to Yume. She really did feel bad about the short ordeal.

Seeing Megumi small at her, she couldn’t help but give a small grin back, something that didn’t happen very often. “I’d like that,” she responded, then looked back down at her books again. “I figured we could start with genjutsu if you’re okay with that? You seem to know a bit about it.”

Picking up the genjutsu guide, she flipped through pages until she came across one that seemed fairly understandable for a beginner. The book was filled every type and level of genjutsu, from kekkei genkai, to ones you could learn on your own. It listed legendary, once in a lifetime jutsu, and one that even a starting academy student might be able to learn. It was separated into sections, starting at the most difficult to the easiest to master. So she flipped to the very back of the guide to start there.

Seeing Ame come around made Megumi’s embarrassing tale worth it in the end. “ You should smile more often, you blue enough as it is”. Teasing her friend, As Megumi peered down at the page she was on. It was understable, but understanding how genjutsu worked and the basics of it would make the rest easier to understand.

Opening up one of the medical texts to the nervous system, Megumi would try to explain it in the most basic way she could think of. Genjutsu was the most difficult fractions of a ninja, and it is why it is not used as much as the other to. Looking at Ame, Megumi would ready herself for a long speech.

“ Genjutsu is the ability to control and direct the opponent's senses through manipulating their nervous system with chakra. There are four methods that act as pathways for your genjutsu”. Megumi would point at the eyes, “ Visual genjutsu affects what a targets sees by sending false information, usually through eye contact to alter the information through the retina and is processed by the optic nerve which sends it to the visual cortex in the brain. Though all genjutsu can be sent visually via a dojutsu like the sharingan”. Pauses as she showed Ami the main parts of the nervous system and the part of the brain that one would stimulate when performing a genjutsu normally. As an added bonus she would she how a dojutsu enters through the optic nerve, but then spreads to other parts of the brain to send out and twist one's perception

Megumi would move one, but she worried that this might be a bit too much information at once. To bad they were not in the training field. As Megumi could show her first hand, how and what a genjutsu was and felt like. “Kinetic is touch or pain, it affects all of the body. While it affects more of the body kinetic is the less difficult of the paths for your genjutsu to intercept, as it is more believable to think you been hit or poisoned, then it would be to see or hear things. A basic example would be to inflame the femoral nerves and send it up through the spine and to the sensory cortex. You could make them feel as if the had a cramp or they were hit. Adding a visual genjutsu to show fire or a cut, add to the believability. You're going to see quite often how all of them go hand and hand to create the scene. As a genjutsu user you are creating the reality that you wish for them to see. However genjutsu is not real and the physical damage will appear on your target unless it was self inflicted, but the mental trauma that is caused is much harder to fix than a simple cut. Megumi would once again show Ame the parts on the nervous system and the part of the brain that processed the information. Megumi should of talked about kinetic last as it is the longest one to explain out of the four.

“ Let’s talk a break, as unloading to much information will just overpower what you just learned”. Megumi would take a sip of her tea and finish off the rest of her sweets. Looking around and seeing that the sun was starting to wane, they would have to continue before time caught up with them.

“ Audio is obviously based on sound and is used to trick your opponent into perceiving a sound that was not made. This of course is don by using chakra to simulated the ear and trick the mind into thinking that they heard something. This can be used to trick them into moving out away from your position if you are hiding or throw off their balance. Of course you can mix it with the others to turn your silent play into a full motion picture from hell. Also those such as myself can transmit their genjutsu entirely through sound. There is also a clan that uses their voice as a catalyst for the illusions”. Megumi would show how chakra or sound would enter the ear and passes through the outer middle and inner ear to affect the temporal lobe.

Moving onto the last but certainly not least, was will. Looking to Ame as to make sure she was understanding everything they were talking about. Megumi would be sure to have a review after they finished their lesson. “ Will is a bit different than the other three as it does not affect the senses and only targets the brain. As an example let’s say you were going to affect the memory. You would want to focus on the hippocampus and the amygdala, orbital frontal cortex, mid and anterior insula cortex and lateral prefrontal cortex”. Megumi would do her best to show her the parts of the brain that one would twist when trying to interfere with memory. “ While the hippocampus holds the memories, they are often tied to emotions as well hence you are targeting the parts of the brain that regulate emotion. Though their are other factors as their mental state, brain structure can change how they react”. Will was difficult to explain as the human brain had not been fully mapped and is still something we do not fully understand.

Megumi did he best to explain it in the most basic way and showed Ame, what was involved, but genjutsu was a very complex jutsu. However their talk would at least point her in the right direction. As she wanted to go into the medical field, even if she did not want to pursue genjutsu she would of at least learned a little more about the human body. Sitting back and looking at Ame, Megumi was mentally exhausted from trying to sum up such a difficult subject. Giving her a joking smile, “ Any questions”?

After a quick compliment to Ame’s smile, Megumi dove right into her lesson. She spoke quickly and efficiently but it was easy for Ame to pick up what she was saying. Not wanting to lose any of this precious information, she swiftly dug out her notebook. It was leather bound and worn, pieces of the cover flaking off from continual usage. Some of the pages were stuck together but they all had been flipped through so much that the book required a tie for it to all stay together.

Pulling out a pencil along with the notebook, she found one of the few blank pages left and began taking note of everything Megumi said.

From what she could tell so far, mastering genjutsu might also help her in anatomical studies. It had much to do with the brain and many other different body parts. It would take time, but Ame believed that with Megumi’s help, she could do it in a heartbeat.

Occasionally, she would pick up her water and take a sip, her throat still a bit sore from choking earlier. And of course she hadn’t forgotten about the mochi. She still nibbled away, savoring the little bit that was left, unknowing if she would get more any time soon.

Ame almost missed when Megumi asked if she had any questions, too wrapped in writing down everything she could. She shook looked up and shook her head, stuffing the last bit of sweet in her mouth as she did.

After chewing and swallowing, she opened her mouth to speak. “I really do appreciate this. You’ve helped me a lot in such a short amount of time,” she said, amazed at the younger girls knowledge of such and art. And it really was an art, genjutsu. Not everyone could do it. But Ame was determined to be one of the ones that could.

Looking at Ame, go as she kept up with everything that Megumi was throwing at her. Looking at the well used leather notebook that was on it’s last leg, Ame would need another one soon. Thinking back on the conversation they had about her family, she wondered if the girl would be okay. Ame was also savoring the treats as if it was her last, Megumi wanted to offer her more, but to much sweets would be unhealthy.

Wanting on the questions. Ame surprised her when she did not ask any, but instead thanked her for teaching her and stated how much she learned in a short time. Trying not to let the pride she felt get to her, Megumi kept her cool and stated the facts. “ Knowing the theory, behind it helps to produce the results. However actually producing results and doing so in a fight is another story”. Thinking about talking about an example, she folded her hands over each other and looked to Ame. “ Let’s say you're in a fight and you want to turn the tables with your genjutsu. While you could attack and if you attack misses make it appear as it did. You would use kinect to make them feel the pain, followed by a visual and audio to show the wound and create the sound of the tearing of their clothes. Toss in some will and other visual to make it appear as if it is bleeding heavily to cause panic and make them go on the defensive to heal. They will mostly try to stop the bleeding with a blood pill, turn it into poison or have think that they lost their pouch”. Megumi would tap her head with a smile, “ It’s all about thinking of how they would react and being a step ahead of the to sink them deeper and deeper into you hands”. Putting her hand back down, “ But that’s just the basic genjutsus. The more advanced stuff is more about crushing the will to escape and making them think that they have already lost, but let’s leave the more advanced stuff for later”.

Finishing up with the genjutsu lesson, she wanted to going into clans as well. Looking outside the sun was starting to wane, she would roughly guess that it was around three pm. “ Let’s move onto clans. The main clans should be a good start”. Waiting for her to bring out the book, Megumi would flip through the clans that were noted in the book. They went from Nara to Hyuuga, however Megumi would save the Santaru for the last for obvious reasons. Flipping to the Santaru’s page the part about how their emotions could cause them to lose control of their powers would resonate with Ame. Also stating about how it is one of the oldest and most projects clans of the cloud village, also might hint at her past and family. Megumi would sigh as she knew that this would not be a happy conversation, and while the book did not cover her clan or many others she doubted that the lesson would continue after this. Looking to Ami, Megumi would try to keep a positive expression as she tried to help her friend through this revelation.

The way Megumi described genjutsu uses and techniques was practically professional. If Ame didn’t know any better, she’d think the younger girl was a teacher.

She watched as Megumi looked down at her notebook for a split second, at what little remained of her mochi for even less time, and then back up at her face. She wondered for a moment what might be going on in her head. But the raven speaking once more shook her out of it before she had any more time to think

Picking up the book on clans, Megumi suggested they switch topics. As her study partner flipped through the pages, she turned to another spot in her notebook that was blank. They read over the book together, each clan taking a new page of notes in her journal. Nara, Hyuuga, Akimichi, the infamous Uchiha, Yamanaka, all of the well known class of the leaf were up first. Ame loved how each family had their own specific ability, passed down from generation to generation. They read on how the Nara and Yamanaka abilities went together perfectly, and how the kekkei genkai of the Hyuuga and Uchiha clans were closely related. There was even five solid pages all about the different forms of the sharingan and the most famous users of each one. There was an entire chapter on the sects of Hyuuga, the family being separated into two classes. Ame wondered if they still did that now.

As they got towards the back of the book, Ame’s note’s filled to the brim with valuable information, Megumi seemed to hesitate. Turning the page, the next clan listed was Santaru. A family that derived from the village hidden in the clouds. They had an extraordinary power over weather, storms in particular. The book read that the Santaru was one of the oldest clans in all of history and they were feared in the cloud for their tremendous power. It described how most had relatively good control their abilities but some not so much. Woman in labor had a tendency to call raging thunderstorms, a child in upset could call lightening to wherever they stood.

Ame’s blood ran cold. “This is…” she spot softly, as if not realizing she was even speaking out loud. “That’s odd,” she scoffed out. There was no way she was from this clan. She remembered. When her mother carried her to the gates, she was too young to understand what was going on, but old enough to realize it wasn’t that far of a walk. So there was no possible way she was from cloud. Shaking it off as just a coincidence, she decided to move on.

Watching Ame as she spoke out as if she was trying to understand what it all meant. However it seemed that she was denying her heritage, Megumi just wondered what had happened to cause such a person to live in the leaf? It would be highly unlikely for the clan to abandon one of their own, perhaps she was born out of an affair like Yama and then deposed of to hide the damning act. The Santaru might not even know of her existence as she might be the produce of a fling while traveling or on a mission. Ame did not seem as she wanted to acknowledge or even talk about the truth, but she can’t deny it forever. Her heritage will catch up with her eventually, and is perhaps the cause as to why she is bullied and harassed.

With all of the resources tapped from the book, Megumi closed it and put a pin on that subject for later. “ While the book does talk about the main and more known clans, there are still many more clans that are not as well known. I know of a few including my own, but many of these clans are very secretive and not much is truly known”. Finishing off her tea, she would not have another as the study session, or to Ame it might feel more like a class or lecture was reaching it’s end.

“ The Gusiken are known for their stalwart and massive frames. They are very similar to the kyoujouran and tend to only care about strength. Saving the talking or thinking to the Nara or other smaller clansmen as they like to refer to us. I have the displeasure of sitting next to their leader at the clan meetings, can’t tell you how many times i’ve had to put up with his comments”. Megumi would look tired just thinking about the meeting where she had to constantly deal with the other villages bull. However a smile crept across her face, “ If you would want to know more i could ask Yama, he’s part of the clan, but the complete opposite. I am glad to have him as a friend”. Thinking about her friend made her wish she was with that fool as he was one of the only friends she had that did not run from her predicament, but instead stood beside her and helped her neutralize it.

Bringing herself back to reality she must of looked like a fool to Ame. Clearing her throat she would continue. “ The Kuro is a rather small clan that is focused on the medical field, if you wanted information and tips i would seek them out. The Shira were known for their natural affinity in the ways of the shinobi and were usually at the top of their classes, i think they have an ancestry in the cloud but that might just be a rumor due to their skin pigmentation. The Isaki clan founded the terrifying village of the mist, and are known for their natural beauty and wealth. Our now based in the Moon when the mist fell. The Fuma clan of the sound village that is under the sands control, is know for their skill with bows”. Megumi would continue to talk about other clans and what village owns what and how the Leaf and the Stone are one in the same now.

Taking a break, if Ame was listening she would not of heard anything about Megumi’s clan. The young puppeteer eyes would shine bright with pride as she readied herself to talk about her clan and craft. “ The Tanigawa are known for are special kind of puppetry that is much more detailed and free flowing than most puppeteers. Our craft is one of a kind and highly sought after, a handcrafted Tanigawa is worth thousands to hundreds of thousands, my work makes collectors drool at the sight of them. My piece was the main attraction at the fund raiser for the revival of the Leaf. My grandfather and i worked at the forefront of the construction of the New Leaf. However we are not just simply builders”. Megumi would create a chakra string and pluck it and cause a angelic tune to ring out from it. “ We also are skilled musicians, i would say that we are masters of the art”. Her eyes would change to a more sorrowful expression as she went into her family's present position. Putting her prosthetic elbow on the table and rest her head on her hand. “ Though we have always been a small and secretive clan, there were fifteen of us before the war with the samurai. When they drove us out and destroyed the leaf, my parents were killed in the battle as well as my grandmother. We went to the stone and worked for them as tradesmen to survive, while our work brought us fame and fortune. When the Stone offered us the opportunity to go and rebuild the Leaf, only myself and my grandfather went”. They betrayed the family and they betrayed the Leaf, we had to deal with them before, returning to our home”. Megumi’s eye would look slightly wet as she thought back to the past.

Leaving the past in the past, she was a Leaf Kunoichi and Leaf Shinobi don’t show tears. Looking at Ame with a friendly smile, “ This must be a lot to take in, how about we call it a day. Eating sweets and drink tea all day is not healthy”. Megumi would look outside and to the sun kissing the earth and an orange glow covered the land. Thinking about the girl and her history, she had no one and Megumi was alone most of the time save for the rare times her grandfather was feeling well enough to get out of bed. Looking back to Ame with a concerned look. “ Ame, i don’t mean to pry, but we are all family in the leaf and i don’t want to see family suffer. If you would like and if the village allows it. I would be more than happy to offer you my my home and hospitality”. While the offer was not completely out of the goodness of her heart, Ami could be a danger to the village. However if trained and felt that the Leaf was her home, she could be a great asset to the village and her clan would gain favor from her accomplishment or the opposite if it failed. It was risky, but with great risk comes great reward. Megumi had to rebuild what was lost.

As soon as the topic of the Tanigawa clan came up, Ame, stopped taking notes. She focused all of her attention entirely on Megumi. Just looking at as she talked about her family, she looked proud yet so sad at the same time. If Ame was more sure of herself, she rush over to the other side of the table and give the girl a hug. But she didn’t. Besides, Megumi didn’t really look like the touchy-feely type.

Megumi talking about her clan’s puppeteering skills, how envied they were across the board. Just the thought of it made Ame want to see her work, see her make those puppets and train with them. She set the thought aside, promising herself to bring up a joint training session sometime in the future.
Ame agreed with her that it was a lot to take in, mentally siding on the fact that just sitting around eating sweets was not good. Especially for a shinobi in training. Ame was ready to get out of the tea shop, to be honest. It was starting to get crowded and it was too small a building for the girl to feel comfortable.

As she started gathering her things, placing her books back into her bag, scarfing down the last of her mochi but careful not to choke, she heard Megumi proposition something interesting.

“Ame, I don’t mean to pry, but we are all family in the leaf and I don’t want to see family suffer,” she started. Ame was almost afraid of where this was going. “If you would like and if the village allows it. I would be more than happy to offer you my home and hospitality.”

Ame couldn’t believe her ears, her eyes widening and heart racing. Someone she had just met, yet already knew quite a bit about, was offering up her home. She thought back on her shabby, run down apartment. She could see the water stains by the fridge, the creaky old bed, and mismatched chairs at the kitchen table that was never used. She pictured the cloth she was found wrapped in as a toddler and how it was hanging above her bed, the oversized bookshelf so packed with things to read that scripts were had also gathered all around the house. There wasn’t a whole lot she liked about her home, if you could even call it that.

Looking up at Megumi, she wasn’t sure how to respond. Her mouth open and closed like a dying fish out of water, gasping for filtered air. “I…I don’t know what to say,” she took deep breaths, the only coping skill she knew to keep her emotions from going out of whack.

She had been alone all her life, for as long as she could remember clearly. How would she survive with another person around? Not to mention this person was from a very prestigious clan. She couldn’t. Not yet.

“Let me think about,” she responded strongly, proud of her decision. “Thank you for your offer, though.” With nothing left to talk about, Ame gathered her bag, throwing it around her shoulder. “Thank you, again, for the mochi. I’ll see you again, soon I hope?”

And with that, she left the tea shop, her mind riddled with a variety of different thoughts. There was a lot she had to think about and soon…

Megumi would wait for Ame to calm down as the offer would surprise anyone. It’s not often the head of a household offers their home to a stranger, even if they are a fellow Leaf. However in this case the girl’s loyalty to the leaf was questionable. Right now she is a random element and a risk to the leaf. Keeping tabs on her and improving her opinion of the Leaf, would be a boon to them. Perhaps her blood was shared with someone of high status in the cloud. Having connections with powerful people in the cloud would be good for her clan.

Megumi would keep her calm and kind smile at the girl as she waited for her response. Megumi eyes narrowed as she tried to hold in a giggle over how flustered she was. Ame would give the usual response one would give when they have nothing to say or cannot make a decision, Megumi hated indecisiveness, their must be something keeping her from accepting a once in a lifetime opportunity but what? Was it out of pride or was her livelihood not so bad, thinking back to her actions over tea it was highly unlikely that her second hypothesis was correct.

Hearing her refusal and the look of confidence on her face, gave her petty reason of pride away. She may of looked and sounded proud, but her lack of a definitive answer negated her confidence. She was not confident if she was she would of refused the offer. This girl would not last in a position of power as she lack confidence and the ability to make a decision. Ame would thank her for the offer and the food as she packed up and prepared to leave. The answer was not conclusive and by her words hoping that they would meet again soon, hinted a slight regret out of her decision. Megumi would bet on her cracking in their next meeting. Ame would no doubt accept her offer. “ It was nice having someone to share knowledge with, as most of our age group tends to be disinterested in knowledge besides big impressive ninjutsus or punching things”. Megumi would wave to Ame as she left, and Megumi would pay the bill as she thought about her next move and how to improve her clan.

She had spent so much time teaching Ame, she had forgotten about her own research into poisons. Sighing as she used up all of the free time she had. Megumi would leave her table and set off back home, no doubt her grandfather would wonder where she has been and she needs to check up and prepare tonight's dinner.
