The dirt was soft and squishy under her hands and knees, moss and leaves pushing up against her palms and fingertips. Okibi got down close to the ground, sniffing at it carefully, going over every inch, and then backtracking just to be safe. "You guys find anything yet?" She called out.
The sounds of snuffling and snorting nearby stopped momentarily. She got three responses. "Nope.", "No." and "Not yet!". Okibi sat up and sighed heavily. They'd been at it for nearly an hour already, and still there were no traces of the scent of those silly mushrooms. The proprietor of the high class restaurant that made the request had given her a sample to smell. The scent was musky, like most funghi, but it was also pungent and unmistakable. A true king of mushrooms. She'd been told that they tended to grow in the ground around only a certain type of tree. She was pretty sure she was looking in the right areas, but why wasnt she finding any?
"Oh! I think I got something!" Peaches suddenly exclaimed giddily, her tail wagging like a windmill in the air. Okibi jumped to her feet and ran over, skidding to her knees when she got there. She lowered her nose to the ground, sniffing the same area as Peaches. The other dogs came over too and started smelling as well. Everyone branched out in different directions, following the very slight musky scent in the ground.
Then, all at once, everyone exclaimed. "Found one!" "Got it!" "Yay!". Okibi ignored the others for the moment, and just started digging. The deeper she went the harder the earth became, but when she got to just about half a foot into the ground, she hit pay dirt. "Aha!" She chirped as she pulled free the malformed, lumpy piece of black funghi that was so highly prized. She pulled open the bag on her hip and dropped it in. When she turned around to check on the pups, she found each of them sitting behind her, each with an identical dark lump in their dirty mouths. She laughed and opened the bag for them, letting each of them drop the shrooms in on their own. "Good job guys! Let's keep looking."
