"Hellooooo, earth to Shiren!"
The boy looked up from staring into the blade of his ninjato, shaking his head as he realized he was daydreaming again. Focus was eluding him...but he was just so busy thinking about the future. And-
"Ah, welcome back knucklehead," said the voice of his eldest brother Yoshi. He was about 18 now...he'd come far since he'd first stepped into the Academy 9 years ago. He'd watched Yoshi train as a Genin all of his life, and every chance he got to practice taijutsu with him, or watch him perform amazing feats of power with his Water Release ninjutsu, was a chance he took heartily. But today, for some reason, he was just so...distracted. "Adjust your grip up on the hilt and bend your arms a bit, you're holding it way too far from your body, like, do you want your arms cut off?"
".....No?" Answered Shiren with far more hesitation than he should have. Truth be told, he had barely even processed the question. "But...I don't wanna get caught in the wire trap."
Yoshi gave him a quizzical look. "Wire trap? I know you see ghosts n' shit but...c'mon, bro, there's no wires anywhere. I promise you this isn't like April Fool's, I'm really helping this time."
Shiren then gave him a smile. "No no, I mean, there's no wires here now but, I've been thinking a bit!"
"Thinking, huh. Didn't know you were capable of such a feat. Sure as heck can't see any thinking on your part right now."
"No really! Like...I've been thinking about, how you've been saying I need to get a lot better to effectively use a sword like this in battle, right, just like you do."
The Chuunin scoffed. "Well thinking about it won't make it happen goof! You gotta practice!"
But the young boy's smile only grew a bit wider. "I know, I know, but what about in between? Before I get really good, I mean. I've gotta be able to fight better somehow. And I was thinking...what if I strapped some wires onto the sword here, and kept swinging at one of my opponents like you're saying. Either I hit my target and all's well and dandy, but if I swing around just right..." he said, pantomiming the motions of surrounding an invisible opponent, swinging at it with as much amateur skill he could muster. "Then, I pull reallll hard..." he said, pulling back on his sword, before then turning around to Yoshi once more, beaming at his idea. "Boom, he's stuck!"
His big brother's eyebrow was raised at that. "Huh. Guess you are paying attention in the Academy after all. Kuro-sensei been talking to you much?"
Shiren nodded. "Yeah. He always tells us that preparedness is how shinobi win. You can have the coolest jutsu in the world...but if you don't know your enemy beforehand, do your homework and get ready the right way, you get wrecked."
"Exactly. Hm...hehe, how's about we work on that a little, take a break from the tai. I'll tell ya how I got past my Chuunin Exam with a little...ahem..."preparedness" on my part..."
