Hikari attempted to sooth the Shima princess with words that echoed a man they both had idolized. It seemed to be working, Haruka even thanked her for her trust and defense…but then Shin responded in a way that was sure to ruffle more feathers. She was certain that he had the best of intentions, but right then, what they needed was someone to respond impersonally.
Shin continued in the vein of love, which only served to raise tensions in the room. Hikari cleared her throat. She regretted that the question of love had become the topic for this interview, so she tried to break away, once more, to their true purpose.“Regardless of the human heart’s penchant for fickleness, Hayata sama, I believe we must come back to the true matter at hand, because whether he loves her or not- you have heard my opinion- He is not here because of love, but actions past, which I recognize he regrets. While regret is a noble sentiment, it is not enough.” She looked to Zaku, and then back at Hoshikata, “Regardless of whatever else happens, this fact remains; he has committed violent crimes against Kumogakure. In light of his recent service, some of those crimes may be forgiven, but not all. Victims deserve justice. Especially those victimized by a mind controlling jutsu. I want to believe that Hoshikata has changed for Haruka’s sake, but today we must balance mercy with justice, and that, I recognize- as must we all- is no easy thing.”
Haruka, of course, felt the need to defend herself. "It is perfectly understood, sir. But, I would not have to choose between them. Do-Sama was my comrade and my friend. He loved me, and with love comes understanding. He is not petty. He knows my heart and knows what is best. It is not a choice. Hoshikata is who I love, who I want to be with. Do-Sama is a man I loved and respected, but in the end our love would have never been strong enough to last. The man who sits before you has changed me, in better ways than you might not want to believe. Just as I have changed him. I would give my life for Do-Sama, make no mistake. If he were to ever awake, I assure you none of this foolishness you speak of would come to pass. I would advise you to no longer speak of that which you don't know, sir."
“Shima dono, I advise you to remember to speak respectfully to your Raikage, even when he does not understand you, you do owe him alliegance.” She said to the spymaster as gently and quietly as she could. She followed the comment with, “That said, I will try to advocate on your behalf. Remember you are not alone in your struggles.” Hikari needed Haruka. She was her Spymaster, her advisor, but also her friend. The Sennin had few enough active subordinates, and fewer friends. It was important to her that Haruka knew she could place trust in Hikari, so that Hikari could place trust in her She turned her attention back to the Raikage, speaking at a level more in line with the forum, Hikari continued, “Hayata sama, in spite of the vehemence of her responses, I will say again, Haruka is a trusted member of my branch. There is no reason you should warn her of such a thing.” She said, “Now, back to the true topic at hand. I would like permission to interview or have Ishikawa san interviewed in a separate place, because while here, his former condition might linger in the presence of Hoshikata. He may also simply feel more comfortable outside his kidnapper’s presence.”
Before she could finish, Hoshikata had moved suddenly, his shackles were broken, laying on the table before him. He suddenly reappeared behind Haruka, whispering something soothing to the angry woman. The words seemed to both embolden him, and perhaps, calm Haruka. Whatever he had said, Hikari appreciated the effort he made on Haruka’s behalf. ”I might be speaking out of whatever the bounds of this trial are, but your sennin was right. Our relationship is not up for debate. It is not something for you to peer at and try to understand. It simply is, and nothing you do or say is going to change that. I strongly suggest a new line of thinking on how you're handling this.”
He was speaking outside of the bounds of the trial, but he wasn’t totally wrong. And then he revealed the reason he’d done what he did to Zaku, and Hikari had to fight to remain objective. It was well known that she had a temper and a mouth. She rarely restrained either one, but she did in this case, for the sakes of all involved. “Let me get this straight.” Hikari said, “You kidnapped, mid controlled, and tortured one of Cloud’s Shinobi… for spitesies.” She said, failing to hide her disgust, but succeeding in controlling her temper. He continued explaining his connection to Titan, and offered is assistance in finding them, a gesture which seemed hollow. Hikari wet her lips with her tongue, and looked away, anger making her unable to stand still.
"Now, Ayumu has brought up an excellent point. I believe you should be consider joining the village ranks, in fact I strongly suggest you do so, at least for Haruka's peace of mind. Also, Hoshikata, you still have not given us a reason as to why you did this to Zaku. Who is your brother and these unknown assailants from Cloud who are aiding Titan? I have you know there has been several civilians industries seeking to usurp the village's power by deterring conflicts to us. However, without any solid proof I can only speculate, perhaps you have some ideas."
Hikari was surprised and a bit taken aback by the easy agreement Shin presented, the anger she felt precluded, the idea was honestly very silly. Hikari thought that they had seemed to jump several steps. Join cloud for Haruka’s sake? What about Zaku? What about justice for him? “Ah… is that not a thing that should be decided after punishment, Raikage sama? This man has admitted to crimes against the realm. I’m not saying never, simply that as I’m sure both he and Haruka understand, he should face consequences for his actions before being offered a place among us.” Hikari didn’t even speculate on the Titan issue.
