Proving your worth (Hon/potential bmod)

The Sileo is a true underground fortress that rivals any counterparts above. Its utilitarian barracks are capable of housing a company-sized force of operatives for many months on end without need for resupply. Vast natural chambers are outfitted to provide hostile environment and combat training for all situations. And finally, the interrogation chambers boast a 100% information extraction rate from captives of all sorts, even if the techniques used are unsavory.

Proving your worth (Hon/potential bmod)

Fri Aug 17, 2018 7:21 am

There was still a lot he needed to do in order to gain experience as an anbu operative. Ibaraki can’t help him all the time, so Uri needed to gain his own identity. For that, he needed to be more proactive within ANBU itself, and no longer just be a shadow, an extension of Ibaraki. He needed to finally put a reason as to why he wore the red faced oni mask. But it can be difficult to do so. It wasn’t like he was hoping to get as many assassination missions. He was getting bored with gate duties. And he wasn’t really aiming to be a normal recon specialist. He wanted to be the man who stood next to the highest authority in the village– the Raikage’s guard. It would take a while to reach there so he would have to accumulate his credentials and prove his worth.

One such fear, he realized was that it wasn’t just important for him to improve on his own. He needed to make sure that the anbu operatives were also doing well. Being a raikage-guard wasn’t just about being one person, it was also about being able to assess and trust the rest of the anbu corps. While there was the sennin who took charge of the anbu affairs, the guards needed to be able to protect the Raikage as firmly as a shield as well, and for that to work, a guard needed to be as knowledgeable and competent as the sennin in order to properly perform his duties. And for that end, Uri took it upon himself to accept the challenged posed by Ibaraki-san– to check up on the recent additions to the anbu ranks and make sure they were not slacking off.

As such, he sent an invitation to a certain anbu operative whose profile was given to him by Ibaraki. Looking at the file, Uri could tell that he was still a kid, but being able to join the anbu, this kid may have proven his worth in the past. It was now time to make sure that this was proof was sustained, if not, developed even further into an asset. In the invitation, they were to meet in the Sileo’s training grounds, a closed off space, though big enough to contain the academy, he supposed since it was underground and everything had their place. In this enclosed space, it was like a large square space meant for open fighting, or if they were to be more creative in their spar, figure out how to disappear from such an open sight. The place was well lit enough and the walls were fortified with steel structure. It could take a good beating, something Uri was hoping in order to make this training session fruitful.

With his red oni mask on and dressed in a long black coat, he waited for the boy to arrive and join him in this training.

Sileo… so they had taken contact to him. This held Honnou’s toes stiff all night, given that he had never been near that area before. He had gotten an invitation from an ANBU member, a member of the most literal shadows of shinobis. Pure executers of their work. In the mind of the young Hyuuga, the most silent shinobis were bred there… this place sounded suitable for him.

Although, this invitation meant more than that. It was a goodbye to his previous, carefree life as a genin - and now that he had passed the exam, a whole new gate of possibilities opened up for him. This would likely mean a lot to his lifestyle… but nothing held him back from accepting the request. He said nothing to his parents yet - he wanted to surprise his father if possible, given the status as ANBU nin was as prestigious as it was a heavy burden - and besides… this could mean that he would be molded the right way. His ‘thinking ahead’ behavior would perhaps pay off under the mask of the ANBU. Also, if he was put under the right conditions… just like with his battle with Suika… he might have been able to reawaken the blue eyes again. It sounded perfect for him…

About a mask… upon entering the Sileo’s training grounds, his eyes fixated on the one visible person through his wooden mask. The man ahead of him was wearing a red oni mask and was dressed in a long, black coat - it was most likely him who invited Honnou over here, and the boy couldn’t see anyone else around. He, himself, wore a white blouse with long sleeves, sandy pants and his discreet equipment plus the mask. Every ANBU member wore a unique mask in and out of the borders of Kumo on their duties, whether if they knew each other anyway. Their secretion was on point, and what secrets they labored… they were destined to surprise him. Although, perhaps Honnou could’ve worked with his own mask - it was handmade, and compared to a professionally crafted ANBU mask, it was poorly executed. It didn’t even seem to depict anything specific like some animal or monster, but just a face… And that was because Honnou didn’t know yet. He didn’t know himself that much, yet…

And yet, nothing would stop him from moving forward… not even a wall of thunder…

“I’m ready.”

He didn’t wait long as the invited operative arrived on the dot. Well, to be precise, he was earlier than expected. Plus ten cookies. Anyway, jokes aside, Uri knew better than to stall the inevitable, so he proceeded to walk closer to the boy. He wasn’t a child anymore but he was still smaller than average. Uri hoped that whatever decision that he made to accept being taken into the ANBU was something he thought long and hard. After all, this wasn’t your simple game of choosing sides. This was a lifetime of commitment and the ANBU was not your average after school club. But it wasn’t all about the shadows and death either. There were many aspects of being an anbu operative than what people normally thought. But that would be reserved for another time. For now, it was simply a matter of making sure the kid knew the physical requirements of being in ANBU.

“I commend you for the prompt arrival. Some overthink things and end up getting here late. Others even refuse. There are many ways one can carve a name for themselves in this branch, but the most important is to make sure you’re always worthy of a place in it,” said Uri as he now stood just an arm’s length from the boy. “I’ve already sent you the details. I’m here to make sure you are worthy of a place in this branch. Treat me as a target you need to execute. Do all that you deem necessary. For I will do the same. Of course, since this is not entirely a culling of the weak, there wouldn’t be a need for death. But if you hesitate at any one point, then I would consider that as your permission to be executed. Remember, this is a moment to assess if you’re worthy. And we have no place for those who do not belong.”

And with that, the rest of the training grounds fell silent as they oni mask stared down at the boy.

Making himself clear to the young boy, Uri would jump back to give the other some space to work with. It would be cheating on his part if he suddenly gutted the boy right then and there when he had just finished giving the instructions. Besides, the point of this exercise was to try and let the boy draw out his full potential. As such, Uri, while he may try to pressure the boy with offensives that dare not to hold back, would have to redefine his strategy. This was no headhunt, after all. And as such, he knew the perfect way to get the ball rolling.

In an instant, he let his chakra surge as his only warning to the boy.

Watching Uri jump back, the young boy caught the signal. It was time to show off a little, you know, make sure that you're capable of performing as a member of the ANBU. And given their reputation... Honnou was to perform efficiently in the eyes of his superiors if he had hopes of joining their ranks. After having heard the instructions, Honnou took a few steps to the side, laying his eyes on Uri from a distance before something bluish shone out through the ocular holes of his mask. Waves of chakra leaked out in response to Uri's, readying for a battle!

As soon as the boy was ready, Uri didn't wait for another second. He immediately let his aura surge out and engulf his body, blue flames appearing to converge about his figure. Along the horns of the oni mask, along the length of his arms and along his back like silhouettes of wings, the blue flames flickered and danced with a charming light.

"I'm picky with my flames. You should do well to remember this. Now, I've got the perfect partner for you." He teased as he gathered energy along his flaming hand and crushed it within his palm. From the core of the energy shot out a black flame that coursed in front of him before it formed a large humanoid washed in shadowy mist. It resembled one equipped with a sword from its outline while it gave a gutteral roar.

The boy attempted to hit Uri but the latter was faster. He could easily anticipate the movement and act accordingly. "Come on, boy. Bare your fangs or you'll be swallowed by my flames." He warned as heat and light began to siphone above the battlefield and without warning, erupt into a murderous searing atmosphere, with the blue flames spreading out like lightwaves. The steel walls would bend and scorch at the touch. Luckily, the boy managed to use his wits and avoid the assault. Uri smiled beneath the mask. So there were talented individuals, after all. Often than not, they were hidden and it was tests like this that discovers them.

"Not bad. Better keep your eyes open though. Don't get distracted by me." Said Uri as the harbinger he summoned would then use this moment to strike the boy.

His eyes shone out through his mask as he quickly sought for another position. If he managed to leave Uri’s field of vision for a moment, then he could work from that point on - and as small of a moment he searched for, given the infrastructure of this place, it was rather difficult to find a hiding spot. Uri quickly spotted him and covered himself in fire like a suit. It would be harsh to touch that directly, so Honnou funneled chakra through his released carpal blade and charged forth. He would have to cut his way through Uri’s flame armor.

His opponent was aware of Honnou’s movements, and he couldn’t utilize the element of surprise now. His channeled Lightning Blade hit flat air where Uri used to stand, and mentioned even warned him against the upcoming hellfire. After being hit back by what appeared like a second opponent - a black figure made of black fire and wielding a sword-like object - An eruption of blue fires soared out from above the field, and despite having focused on Uri’s position and being pushed back by his opponent’s summon, Honnou saw them coming from a mile away. He efficiently dodged the blue flames almost inhumanly, but the summon was waiting for him when he caught his foothold again. Just barely did Honnou avoid another clean hit, but his side still tasted the black figure’s wrath. Feeling troubled, he would have to change his way of fighting a little to catch up again - remember, he was to consider Uri a target, an enemy for this battle, in which he swiftly adjusted his right gauntlet a little…

It was a miracle that his mask hadn’t burned off yet, since it was pure wood…

There was no doubt that the boy had something special. It wasn’t just foolhardy guts, it was a strange determination that made Uri sympathize with the boy at the very least. It was almost as if he was out to prove himself. Well, that was the point of this exercise - to test if the kid who caught the eyes of the examiner during the previous chuunin exam truly had what it takes to be part of the ANBU. It was fascinating to see the boy make use of his strategies to try and dodge his assaults, but there was only so much that the boy could do. The pressure of the silhouette harbinger didn’t help alleviate the boy’s predicament either, proving to be quite the challenge in breaking the boy’s rhythm and pace of battle.

“Careful not to get distracted, boy,” said Uri as he noticed how the boy was forgetting to keep his guard up against the harbinger. “In a real mission, you aren’t simply going to be fighting one person. In most cases, you’ll be all alone against many. You’ll have to keep in mind that there is no one to help you but yourself. However, you must also be wary of others involved. And in doing so, you need to keep calm and collected, even when you’re being beaten to the a pulp. Only then can you keep your guard up and leave no opening.”

He pauses as he watches the boy’s last attempt to strike him, but he so easily avoids it. And in return, Uri lets the boy experience a shower of darkness. Black mist forms from overhead before it rains down to trample on any living being, crushing them from the force. Well, in this case, he simply wanted the boy to experience being overwhelmed and wanted to know how he would react.

But he was careful not to overdo it. At the moment he saw the boy run out of strength, Uri would cancel all his jutsus, the harbinger disappearing in an instant before it let loose its massive assault, and Uri appearing by the boy’s side to catch him before he fell to the ground unconscious. “Not bad, kid. Perhaps we can work more of a few things, but not bad.”

Just then, Uri would feel a presence approach the Sileo’s training grounds and he glanced at the lone entrance. Whoever it was, Uri didn’t have to worry since he had his mask on. Even when he was no longer in isolation, he could still remember Shuuten’s words to best be anonymous even within the ANBU’s organizational structure.

Vigilant eyes kept an endless watch on the many corridors of the Sileo Tempestas, and of course, the training cells were of no exception. Stowed away above the support beams lining the ceiling were several small cameras, all providing a live feed in shades of gray to ANBU Central Command. It was a nifty innovation, mostly meant for security through the feed had its occasional other uses. As Uri and Honnou’s exercise was conducted, it was on display across a wall of over a dozen large screens, along with a rotation of over one hundred additional of camera feeds. The Command Center was not a theater— typically the large office was a whirlwind of activity acting as the nervous system of the hidden cloud, however, the lights were low in favor of a movie-night atmosphere. Several shinobi were gathered here, mostly elite rank operatives making use of the high access to coral in the place for a special showing. The aroma of popcorn with fatty butter and salt was rich and intoxicating. There was a chorus of laughter as a new trainee was being shown the ropes in the old fashioned way and harsh critiques from elders who had something to say about everything the fighters did. To these onlookers the brutality was normalcy; the barbaric examination held some quarter as a reasonable way to teach a student. To them, it was funny to watch a poorly trained inductee nearly die at the hands of a loose cannon. These six or seven shinobi were all seated on or around the room’s center counsel, and all seemed entranced as someone slipped into the room from a rarely used back entrance.

The group paid the image of a masculine figure who walked slowly up to the furthest platform which overlooked the entire Command Center. Several months had passed since someone had manned that station— for all the shinobi knew it was a janitor. But no, it was none other than the rightful holder of that place, who made himself known as he slid a finger across personal controls over the room’s lighting. Bright, golden light washed over the room as movie night was abruptly canceled, and Vice Commander Kaji Okada was revealed shooting a hard glare through eyes with pupils like emeraldine orbs.
“Enough” bade Kaji, who took in the full attention of the attendees. “Movie night in Central Command is over… as a matter of fact, shame on you for making a spectacle of your peers.”
Of course, this caused a slew of disgruntled sighs from the several spectators. A few of them looked upon Kaji Okada as if they had seen a ghost, but when one also spoke up in protest another quickly corrected him and the group started collecting their things.

The fight was still in progress between Uri and Honnou as Kaji approached the wall where it was on display. Kaji was motioning to pick up an empty beer bottle one of the miscreants left behind when he noticed folders opened with both fighter’s profiles and records paired side by side. A closer look revealed them as photocopies, in black and white with red marks on them— scores being tallied freehand like on a fight card. Under a heavy sigh, Kaji scooped the records into his hands and took a stern look at the fight in progress before hurrying out of the room.
-------------------------------------
By the time Kaji had arrived it appeared that the fighting had reached its conclusion— after all, the duo was not much of a fair match up according to the scorecards. The doors of the training room opened to reveal Kaji Okada, who did not bother walking through the Sileo Tempestas in a masked form, however, he was in his appropriate anbu uniform. Eelspine was hanging across his back with its pommel seemingly reflecting the room’s light with a brilliant sheen. The photocopies were ditched along the way. His uniform was fitted to his physique— it told the story of a honed shinobi form with prowess in hand to hand combat, and his posture added a promise of discipline. His raven head of hair was bound back in a loose knot with strands flying free, and a face rich with patchy stubble suggested that he had been either working hard or cutting loose as of late, certainly the former. His most notable feature though was the hardness of his stare, those emeraldine orbs that stared into the soul. Clearly, he seemed to be in disapproval of what he walked in upon. And as he entered, he caught the tail end of Uri’s final statement, one that insisted that there were good intentions beneath the colluding that caused this sparring match.
“That’s right, you put up a good fight son” spoke the Vice Commander in a tone that commended Honnou’s effort without sounding all too enthused. “Perhaps next time the spar will be led by a lecture on how to hold your ground against an opponent who’s above your weight class.”
Kaji continued his approach, ignoring formalities as he moved until he was in range to see to the pupil’s safety if needed. As he drew closer, the perceptive Kaji began to notice a certain familiarity to the senior of the two sparring shinobi, something a mere face covering could not hide. Kaji had seen his record but now he remembered the acquaintance he made with Uri only days before— a chance passing on a fateful, cataclysmic night. He couldn’t say the same for the lad Honnou though, who was still all but a mystery.

“You can get on with the meaning of all this whenever you’re ready.”

The harbinger had been a pain in the ass since it appeared. Surprisingly, Hon had trouble dividing his focus on multiple targets - he was doing fairly better against Uri only. Very well, if the ANBU member wanted to test him that severely, then that probably meant that he saw something in Honnou that justified his actions - perhaps he was surprising in Uri’s eyes. Yet, Honnou’s thoughts faded away from the optimistic thinking and more into how difficult it was to catch up to him now.

The two against one strategy confused Hon several times, his Chidori couldn’t target two as efficient as just one. And despite seeing the Harbinger’s moves, its speed outdid his own - that too led him forget about the several burns on his body. There were rings of burns on his previously white blouse signaling the ring of fires that kept him bound for a moment, and his consciousness was beginning to fade. As a last resort, he switched to long-range and attempted to bind Uri in order to catch a breath and - hopefully - to try and target the annoying Harbinger, but his vision turned into a blur by Uri’s last fire jutsus which knocked Honnou down.

Sounds of cracking bones could be heard when the Hyuuga boy slid across the arena floor until he braked, down for good and with rings of burn marks on his chest and legs. Apparently, something had stopped him from completely touching the ground despite the sliding - he felt arms holding him before he fainted.

His wounds were still releasing smoke even after he closed his eyes, and bluish light vapored from his eyes releasing the Hakumei Byakugan from his control until he would wake up again…

Re: Proving your worth (Hon/potential bmod)

Wed Aug 22, 2018 2:48 pm

Much to his surprise, the face that greeted him was none other than that man, Takaji Osada. He was still for a moment, trying to remember the instance that they first met. Surely, there was a kind of arrogance that the man displayed in front of them that was gathered, and the confidence to even be in good communication and regard with the Raikage. This only confirms it. This man was definitely someone beyond his rank. And to think that he was walking around the Sileo without the mask, though clearly he wore a uniform that very much resembled that of an anbu’s. He kept his guard up, even as the other greeted them with a half-hearted commendation of Honnou’s performance. He knew there was something wrong with the situation, especially when the man’s eyes were far from being cheery and the plain sight of his weapon.

“I’ll do so after we get him treated,” said Uri. A medical team should have been stationed outside the training room, waiting for the result. It was likely the Sentou Henkan from the Medical Branch who was called for this purpose. And as if on cue, due to Kaji’s own entrance, leaving the door open, a masked doctor did enter the vicinity and hastily went over to Honnou’s side to inspect him. Uri would let the boy down on the ground to let the Sentou Henkan perform a first aide treatment to his injuries, the warm glow of chakra instantly filling the space with vibrant green light, much akin to Kaji’s eyes.

At that, Uri turned his attention back to the man with authority. The light from the glowing chakra that gleamed against Kaji’s eyes only made them far more serious and deadly, sending a brief moment’s chill down Uri’s spine, but he didn’t move. “I did not think you were someone from ANBU. My apologies,” Uri began as he slowly took off the red oni mask to reveal his face. It was considered rude to hide behind anonymity when someone, especially of higher rank– something he was assuming at this point– was addressing you. And so, he let the other catch a glimpse of his own red hair and red eyes, almost as red as the mask he wore, and just to put their encounter into context once more as they had recently met by the village gate.

“Under normal circumstances, I would not tell you the details, but seeing as you’re someone close to the Raikage, I suspect you’re someone who can simply pull authority over me anyway,” he began, not so much in hopes of spiting the latter with his rank, but more so as if he was talking to himself. “Today was an evaluation. This boy was apparently recommended to part-take in the training of an ANBU operative. But because he’s from a different branch, they… the other anbu officials decided to make sure if the boy has what it takes to even qualify so they gave me the task of meeting him here and test it out.”

And that’s when Uri realized it himself. The boy was obviously far below his rank. There was reason for concern to his safety as well as the man’s seemingly building up rage. This was a mismatch and though the boy was enthusiastically trying to prove himself, it was almost seemingly decided from the start. But for what reason? Only words of caution from Shuuten would resound in his head at that point. He was always different. He was a special case, so to speak, having learned and taught far from the anbu’s prying eyes, isolated and then suddenly introduced into the force when he was allowed to. But it was by the Raikage’s decision that he was even allowed to live, to be trained and to be included in the anbu in the first place, thus it was normal if there were any jealousy among others. Jealousy was a mild word. Spite should be the right one. Shuuten always warned him of his risk as a jinchuuriki, but he also reminded him that not everyone in anbu would be so kind to him for how he suddenly appeared in their ranks, especially beyond missions. That would prove why he was assigned to the gates for cold nights and why he got tonight’s mission as well.

Maybe they thought that if the boy had talent, they could belittle Uri’s own potential and have him demoted, perhaps even reassessed and cast out. Or in the chance the boy would die, they would have a reason for Uri to be tried and equally be cast aside. Maybe he even knew their aims from the start. And yet, Uri didn’t refuse. To refuse the task given to him that night was to show his deficiency, and it would have shown badly on Shuuten or the Raikage. And all the more when the boy appeared, all cheery and high-spirited to perform. It would be a disrespect to the boy if he toyed around with him in the fight.

“It’s essential to let the boy know what he’s getting himself into. He needs to know that there are possibilities of death even during training, because these things happen in real missions. To be an ANBU means you won’t flinch even at the gutting of a knife to your stomach. You need to retain a clear head amidst the pressure, and you have to face the mission with all you’ve got. He was brave and stubborn, but he also has a gift and the potential. To someone who had such a soul that wanted to go against destiny itself, I may have been the one that lost. I let go of my neutrality. I let his enthusiasm get the best of me and I ended up making it more difficult than necessary. But I think it wasn’t wrong. It’d be a disrespect to his efforts to be toyed around with.”

Then again, perhaps he was talking too much. Perhaps he was trying to justify his actions as he had experienced the same thing. He knew he was taken in under not so normal circumstances and that most of the time, it was real when those words - to prove yourself or die trying - were uttered on a daily basis like a chant. If it wasn’t them, it was him. Because his only purpose was to live as an asset, not as a burden. It was a long road for him, through those years isolated and heavily trained, constantly reminded, and even now, still threatened by death as he was a risk due to the demon inside. Even if it wasn’t a demon in actuality, it was and has always been treated as one, and by extension, so was he. He glances at the oni mask he held before he tucked it inside his coat.

“Oh well. I guess I’ll do what it takes to give back to the Raikage and be his guard. Even if it means doing this all the time, or baby-sitting new kids, or watching the gates. Until those men are satisfied, I’ll do my part… or am I mistaken?” Or so he would say, but he simply shuts his mouth and stares even towards Kaji, waiting for the other’s response, leaving everything else unspoken. And yet, the smell of burnt cloth and skin wafted through the air, the gleam of the healing chakra still shone, but at least he could feel a bit of life in the young chakra pulse to their side where the boy was taken cared of by the masked Sentou Henkan.
