Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

Armed with dangerous knowledge, Shiori made her way to the gates. While many things have changed, one thing had not: her resolve to find Sousuke. He was no longer within the village, that much she was confident of. It was strange how all of these years she was always dependent on him, previously she was content to play the part of the fool. Pride and necessity have changed her priorities, from now on it would be her that everyone else depended on. Certainly she had her own ends, there was a reason she chose the Takahashi family, but her time with Sousuke has endeared her to the human plight. Despite the lies, the fallacies and the falsehoods, she truly had affections for the Steward line. Something drew her to them, there always was an exceptional specimen among them, much like the Sunahoshi. It was a shame that Primus' line was the Sunahoshi, such potential lost when the last of them disappeared. Little did she know, the Sunahoshi line was still among them. Eventually, perhaps, another paragon of humanity would rise up. That would be an interesting sight.

Being near her since these changes as of late would prove dangerous for the Steward Kazekage. Hate is not the most dangerous of emotions, it is love that truly propels a man or a woman to greater heights. The potential for humanity is truly limitless, sadly she has a glass ceiling but her ceiling is still a rather high bar. She just needed to reach it fast. Her brain was still in a fog, but her determination granted her a level of clarity. She would work through the haze and find him.

...So much time was wasted playing Shinobi Medic.

She had encountered the specter known as Mikaboshi, his link to Sousuke's life-force reinforced her instinct that Sousuke was alive somewhere. His state would be a cause for concern, with the village in turmoil it was likely that the Kazekage was in dire straights. Perhaps the Cabal had captured him. He could be fighting for his life at this very moment. Sousuke was the thing that tethered her to humanity, the one thing that would keep her civilized. If they hurt Sousuke, she would... seek her potential and then demonstrate her bitter pain. Her tiny hand was balled into a fist as her fears manifested in her mind. She would find him.

The lift at the Maw was broken. That would suggest that they were caged in. She stomped her heel on the floor and listened for the echo as it reverberated off the sides of the tunnel of the great annelid. Barynx was a beast of legend and lore for a reason, the echo ceased before she saw an exit. The ancient rings of cartilage and the exoskeleton of the beast still held the walls firmly in place. The lift was not in use and moreover, she could hear the frayed and broken ropes. What she could not see was the letter of intent by the Cabal. Their taunt would have likely enraged her but it would not have altered her designs, rather it would have reinforced her need to vacate the village all the same. She was unaware of the risks the village was incurring with her defiant act, she was still hospitalized the day the lights were turned out and Suna as a whole was warned that there were bombs planted throughout the city. Her choice here was the kazekage or potentially thousands of citizens. If faced with such a decision, her choice would be elementary: Sousuke every time.

Would she attempt to repair the lift? No, she was not a skilled mechanic and from what she could thus far recollect she was a technophobe. Needless pieces of technology only serve to eventually break. Certainly that would be sacrilege to Sousuke, a boy who liked his toys, but really it was a hobby or at least it should have been. With the lift broken and the city needlessly deep in comparison to the surface, she was left with only one other option: to climb. She pulled out a spool of Ninja Wire and frowned, it would not hold her weight. She had several more, she unwound the thin yet tensile spool and thought about it briefly. No, she was not going to stake her life on the strength of a string. She shook her head and stuffed them back into her pocket and stomped on the floor a second time. It was a long ways up, probably half a mile. She thought she heard the terminal point. It was closed. She let out a sigh, the only way out was up.

She wondered where Mikaboshi had gone, they had met earlier in the day whilst she searched the hovels and ruins of the poorest districts in Sunagakure with the latent hope that Sousuke was holed up in one of the vacant spaces. She was disappointed in her chance meeting with the Sennin, he was not her query but he was being held by someone. She never asked the now dead jailer why he was holding Mikaboshi, it was not a concern at the time. She honestly had no idea why the Cabal was even in Sunagakure. They were proving to be troublesome. Mikaboshi had seemingly merged with the shadow and gloom and departed nary a pleasantry not that they were friends or even acquaintances. Not that she relished allying herself with whatever matter of beast Mikaboshi the specter of Sousuke's blade happened to be but she did not want to take this journey alone. A lack of companionship would not deter her, nor would the awesome depth of his life well. She pulled her chakra to her hands and her feet and she took hold of the wall...

If anyone was going to stop her, now was the time.

Exploring was a rare thing that Surutameni did, and it just so happened that today was one of those rare occasions. He had left the Academy early that morning, with plans to visit his parents in the Grand Palais, but the black haired boy had not ended up where he meant to go. His feathered companion circled close above him, looking out for any threats while he slunk through the shadows towards the Maw of Barnyx. He had never been there before, and with the warnings from The Cabal, he was even less interested in going to see what it was about. Though, being so close his curiosity peaked and he decided now was the best time to do so, if he left this moment he be even less inclined to come back to the place. As he approached he could hear some sort of echo now and then, his pace slowed and he tried to dig himself into the darkness of the street the closer he got. Even Unmei came down from his scouting and landed on Surutameni's shoulder, his beak clamped shut, and his wings glued to his body. The bird obviously worried about the situation at hand.

As he rounded the last corner to look at the great lift his amber eyes caught sight of a woman, stomping her feet on the ground, and he realized that she was the one making the noise. Unsure of who's side she was on the boy only peered at her from a distance, not wanting to say or do anything to attract her attention to him. But he noticed that she did not even seem to head the warning that had been posted to ensure the safety of the citizen's of Sunagakure, which made him think that she was part of that crew. As he watched, he saw her grasp the wall of the lift and as she did Unmei darted out away from him and cawed loudly at the woman, buffeting her with the winds from his wings. Trying to get her to stop trying to leave. As the bird provided a second or two of distraction, Surutameni's mind raced with the thoughts and images of the entire city being turned to rubble. He quickly stepped away from the shadows and tried to shoo away Unmei so that he could try to get her attention instead. The bird was angered at her blatant disregard for the lives in the city and he did not care if she was indeed part of The Cabal. Surutameni took his jacket off and slung it around the bird, making it impossible for him to continue to annoy and bombard the poor woman. His companion cawed loudly and tried to bite his fingers, but he ignored it and tucked him under his right arm and with the other gently grasped the woman's hand from the wall, knowing that if he didn't try to stop her... No one would.

"Uhm, excuse me... But that does not seem like it would be the best idea..."

A strange winged beast made its presence known with a fanfare of plumage flapping about and the shrill squawks only such an avian beast would be capable of. Such a wonderful yet terrible sound. She could not recall ever seeing such a feathered creature in her rather stunted memory. She dug her hand into the hardened earth, her chakra breaking through the crusted wall of the tunnel, she pulled herself up a segment. There was a boy not far, she could hear his heart and see his outline in the shadows, Shiori was a blind-woman but her ears more than made up for her deficit. Shadows alone did relatively little to obscure her 'view.' She was not afraid, not that she could sense the power of the interloper but she was more determined and fearful of pain or death. Perhaps he was a member of the Cabal, a freed prisoner, defector or anarchist. She moved up a second segment, her hands ripped into the hard-packed earth and ancient carapace and she ripped new hand holes to stabilize her ascent.

The bird rather than her seemed to be his first concern, he tried to quell the frenzied beast. She could hear its muffled cries through the cloth.</COLOR>
<i></i>"I don't think he likes it,"<i></i>she warned referring to the bird in a makeshift sack.

"Uhm, excuse me... But that does not seem like it would be the best idea..."

The voice called to her, they both seemed to have their concerns. In relation to his, she had not gone far only several feet past the second segment of the worm which was thirty feet or so, but the distance would be more significant to someone such as he who has an idea of what is at stake. The adhesive-like property of her chakra allowed her to dangle side-ways in the cavern. "Up is the way out,"</B><i></i><COLOR color="darkred"> Shiori answered simply as she nodded her head to the side which was actually up to any ground-dwelling spectators such as he. "The Kazekage is up there and I need to bring him home," she further explained. She had spent the last two days searching for her cousin, sifting through the debris of the tower and searching among the remains of the dead for the most fearful of outcomes. She was prepared for the bitter moment where she learned of his death, but she had the faintest trace of hope that he was out there somewhere but even her hope was marred with dread. IF he was alive, his absence would indicate that there was a force capable of preventing his return. Was he injured? Captured? Being tortured as they spoke? She needed to find him before there was nothing left to recover. There was desperation in the woman's attempt, to climb a half mile straight up, possibly break through a gate or dig out part of a tunnel, fate whatever threat looms at the entrance and then find the Steward Kazekage before it was too late.

The boy might warn her of the peril she is placing upon their subterranean community. That fiery death would meet the denizens of their home and that it would be her ignorance that would seal their fate. If similar concerns were vocalized by the concerned citizen she would reply simply with,
"then you best be climbing."<i></i>The lives of thousands of innocents was a paltry concern to her, not that she wished their death or discomfort through her actions, she just did not consider then significant. If the boy joined her in her ascension, she would not let him fall, it was within her strength to help at least one person escape. There was a difference between lack of concern and willfully causing if directly or by proxy the harm of another. If the boy tried to physically subjugate or deter her she would respond in kind, perhaps like Sietch Zensunna he would serve as a projectile.

At some point he might query how she could be sure of the Kazekage's location. She was not entirely sure but she was confident. She had looked everywhere within Sunagakure and from two sources she was directed to the outside world. One by a civilian or errant low-ranking shinobi and the other by Sousuke's sword spirit, Mikaboshi. Sousuke's sword spirit was not only separate from his blade but also corporeal and hungry. She has heard that Sousuke was outside of the city but his ultimate fate a mystery, Mikaboshi claimed that he was somehow tuned to Sousuke's life force and that Sousuke was alive but again alive and intact are two very different outcomes. If asked she would respond honestly, she had no reason to lie.
<i></i><B>"A civilian and a sword spirit indicated that he was outside and since he cannot be found inside, they might speak the truth."

OCC: I don't kill new players, you will not be killed by me regardless of your actions. If you attack, she will likely kidnap you though.

More than likely the Cabal will grab us en-route or at the actual entrance to the Maw... Let's get going unless you want me to carry you.

(OOC: I appreciate that very much! And I have no plans of attacking you, though being kidnapped would probably be the least of my concern haha I just hope I am not gonna get killed in general D=)

"The Kazekage is up there and I need to bring him home."

Surutameni's face lit up with hope. He remembered hearing that the Kazekage had gone missing, and since then he really wasn't sure how Sunagakure was still functioning with it's leader missing. As, he stood there for a moment, he looked up the distance of the Maw of Barnyx and shuddered, not knowing how well he would be able to scale the wall with this woman, but he knew that if they hung around too long someone would notice. He released Unmei from his jacket and put it back on after a vigorous few snaps to make sure there wasn't any bird poop within it.
"I.... I don't have much training so I don't know how much use I'll be..." Surutameni's voice was small and lacked confidence at this point, he didn't want to hold the woman back or cause her to get injured because he didn't know exactly what he was doing, "but I will do my best!" And with that last declarative statement the boy channeled his chakra to his feet and hands, emulating the woman above as he dug into the wall of the great lift. He slipped here and there but somehow managed to climb a bit, his feathered companion flying rather close to his body. He turned his amber gaze back to the woman once he reached her side and pondered about who she was for a moment, but that really didn't matter at this point. He would ask her name and that would be that, how she knew where the Kazekage was, now that was a different story altogether.

Surutameni muttered to himself, warring with his curiosity and the fact that he had seemingly agree on this madman's climb. Though now was a little too late to be doing that. He sighed heavily and continued to gaze at the woman next to him.
"If you don't mind me asking I was wondering what your name is?" He knew that they should be focusing on the task at hand, but he was a curious boy and couldn't help himself. "And, you know where the Kazekage is? That is new, I thought no one knew where he was..." He paused and looked down at the floor below. This was a bad idea, but he couldn't change that now, go up and escape, get killed, or be captured, those where his options and he knew that well.

"I.... I don't have much training so I don't know how much use I'll be... but I will do my best!"

Any training was better than no training. A part of her was relieved, she did not recall the sky or a world without ceilings. The last two decades plus the rare fragment was all her memory possessed. She would not be making this climb alone, a youth would accompany her. She was still ignorant of the perils ahead of them and the wrath the city might endure for their reckless act.

Shiori continued her ascent. She grabbed hold of the punctured carapace of the great annelid, her fingers curled into the stagnant earth that laid beyond as she released her non-dominant hand and reached within the confines of her garments. Her hand searched restlessly for her recklessly placed spool of wire. She relinquished the end and tied it to her belt and she released the other end to the space below.
"Tie it to something that can endure your mass," Shiori recommended as the diminutive woman paused as if in thought. It was a long way up, possibly too far for even her to climb. She could not recollect the depth of the lift well and could could not hear a terminal point.

"If you don't mind me asking I was wondering what your name is?"

"Takahashi Shiori," she answered bluntly. Her surname would be the name most would recognize, her given was that of a woman easily forgotten. "Although I have taken a liking to the name Suna," she added thoughtfully. She punched another handhold for herself and allowed her feet to rest in the previous holds. She did not want to exhaust her energies, she had no idea how far they would have to travel. "You are?"

"And, you know where the Kazekage is? That is new, I thought no one knew where he was..."

She was asked. The answer was convoluted but still rather simple. "A civilian and a sword spirit indicated that he was outside and since he cannot be found inside, they might speak the truth," she responded. She could feel beads of sweat forming on her brow, she wiped it away with a soiled forearm leaving a trail of ancient dust and grime across her face. "Rather, I hope they speak the truth," she admitted. She let out a sad sigh, she missed Sousuke and in his absence her entire world had changed over the course of only a few days and it was not for the better. Sure, her strength was growing exponentially but she was happier in her ignorance. It would be a long climb and if the boy had tethered himself to the ancient, he would not fall even if he lost his hold and Shiori would talk... and talk... AND TALK... Perhaps sharing the fate of his fellow Sunans would have been kinder.

"Sousuke is my cousin, and I love him. I really LOVE him and..."</COLOR>

"Sou-Sou and I are not related by blood, I was adopted and..."

"He has this sword, a ghost lives inside. I want to break the sword but now his ghost is a scary people eating man, I like him better as a monster..."

"I dug a lot of holes around the Kazekage Tower, I could not find Sou but I did find a fridge full of bacon..."

"Do you have a favorite color, I don't. What is it like to see colors?"

<COLOR color="darkred">This endless prattle persisted, she was momentarily distracted with the self-made opportunity to talk about Sousuke which in turn became a conversation about random topics. The discussion would likely be one-sided, not because the boy was uninterested although that was a possibility, rather Shiori rarely took a moment to take in air. If the boy did not plummet to his death by manner of suicide they would reach the median point of the tunnel. Shiori was starting to tire, as for the youth, that would be anyone's guess. Her bloodied knuckles broke through the the shell once again and her hand held firm to the wall, her chakra serving as an additional adhesive.

"Would you be able to release your bird? I am not sure how far we must go,"<i></i> Shiori asked. While she could not communicate with the avian creature and it was unlikely that the boy spoke crow, the bird was an additional rebound point for both their and its own sound. While the adventure should be the journey, her only concern was the destination.

Uri's time spent in the village since the occupation had been one of subterfuge and futility. While he would never claim to be the best ninja in the Sunagakure, he had discovered, that despite his best efforts, there was always some other problem to face when he turned a corner. The village was a bundle of big issues and no one big force to answer them. Unfortunately, the scare tactics had done well at gripping at the throats of many and forcing their hands into inactivity. Several Sunan shinobi had taken up arms and fought, blitzing the streets and attacking any who harmed civilians. Uri, Harupia, and even the vaunted "Kasha", the masked vigilante who was making public displays of defiance. There was hope, but at what risk?

The chuunin fiddled with the shawl covering his face, a fingertip scratching at the outside of the material. It itched, especially since he had been wearing it for so long. When wasn't his face covered by a mask these days? Even if he dressed plainly, Uri had battle many a mental skirmish with demons he had only unearthed in this darkened hallow of a broken home. Figuring that the fabric disguising his features would remain a nuisance, he took a moment to adjust the reflective goggles concealing his eyes and he dropped down from the high stacked series of apartments. What more could he do other than be there, be present, show that the villagers hadn't been forgotten.

One area of particular trepidation had been the gates. The ominous warnings that had bellowed unto the people combined with the destruction of the functional lift had done well in warding off any curious people. It didn't stop the Cabal from monitoring it and it didn't stop Uri from checking up on it either. On swift feet and weary energy, he arrived in short order, having not run into anything else of interest or concern. Most times, he would give a quick scan and move on, but this time he observed two people, scaling the gates and making a decent effort. That meant only one thing: they wanted out. If only he could have been gnawing on a hard candy right then; the sugar would take some of the edge off.

A quick change in position and he put them just below the pair. The climb was a familiar one. Uri made a point of using the lift sparingly and often just descended or ascend by his own means. It allowed for a great overview of the village. Runic seals glowing on the bare palms of his hands, he pressed them into the ground. A gentle rumbling began and a small mound of earth formed underneath Uri. He would need to catch up to the pair and there was one way that was both efficient and fast. A few seconds passed and there was a popping noise, like someone putting their finger in the mouth and yanking it out, but only twenty times louder. The sudden explosion shot the chuunin up into the air at an accelerated pace, like a bold from a crossbow, the edges of his worn-in boots showing signs of slight burns. The two figures grew larger as his improvised ascent brought him near...

And then he passed by them. Arms flailing and legs kicking, he reached out from the wall of the lift and looked for purchase. It took a few moments, but he slowed enough to dig a fist into the wall and hold himself in place. Catching a brief breath, he peered to the duo now below him and called out through the covering on his mouth, "Hey, I don't know if y'all missed the memo, but the lift is closed for renovations. I've heard on the grapevine they're adding in a snack cart."<i></i>

As they slowly and methodically continued their ascension up the Maw of Barnyx, Surutameni watched as the older woman dug around in her clothing, grabbed a spool of wire, tied it around her belt, and rapidly tossed the opposing end down to him. He was not expecting any help, but was pleased to know that at the very least he wouldn't plummet to his demise. The young child quickly plunged his now bloodied fist through the outer crust of the lift, to secure himself and held out his other to catch the spool.

"Tie it to something that can endure your mass,"

Nodding, Surutameni searched for a place to fasten the slim wire to his person. Upon finding no other place save his belt loops, he decided that it would be the best option and tied the wire to himself. He hoped that his strength would not fail and that he would not be the cause of the both of them to go plummeting back into the ground. He wiped his face of sweat, leaving behind sweat now caked with dirt, and continued to punch holes into the wall to keep up with the woman above him.

As they climbed she took the time to answer his questions, even if she did continue on with a trail of never ending speech before and after she did.

"Takahashi Shiori, although I have taken a liking to the name Suna, You are?"

Surutameni glanced to her as Shiori told him her name. He mildly recognized her surname, but as he was from the slums and was a sheltered due to personal choice, he did not quite understand the significance.

"Takeshi, Surutameni...." He paused and took a deep breath, trying to steady his shaking limbs. "Suru if you find my name a bit of a mouthful." He let a smirk creep across his features as he responded. He was glad when she answered the question about how she knew about the Kazekage, but was also rather perplexed at the same moment. "A civilian and a sword spirit? What kind of knowledge was that?" His thoughts bounced back and forth as she continued speaking, his attention now completely gone. "She is completely crazy... Why did I even THINK this was a good idea.... Oh wait, I didn't think." As each of his minds thoughts ricocheted through his head his features contorted with each emotion warring between each other.

"Do you have a favorite color, I don't. What is it like to see colors?"
Confused by her haphazard way of speaking and his thoughts, Surutameni almost missed the question that had been squeezed within the broken sentences about the Kazekage and her search for him.
"Black is my favorite color, though it's almost like seeing nothing..."He stopped realizing that she had actually asked him what is was like to see colors, he thought she could see. "Why would a blind woman climb the walls of a lift?" He pondered the idea a small amount.
"You can't see? Is there a reason for that?"
Through her rambling Surutameni managed to pick up that Sousuke was indeed the name of the Kazekage, and that Shiori called him Sou-Sou, which seemed like a rather cutesy and endearing term, which made Surutameni snicker a little with amusement.

His hands hurt and he wasn't sure how far they had climbed, afraid to even bother looking below him. He wasn't afraid of heights, but he didn't want to think about the chance of falling anymore than it had already crossed his small and unexperienced mind. He stopped more and more to let his limbs rest, they were getting incredibly tired, but he knew that if he stopped he would be pulled up by his shorts, which didn't exactly seem like a pleasant idea.

"Would you be able to release your bird? I am not sure how far we must go,"

"I can. He usually prefers to stay close, but he'll go look if I tell him to."

He waved an arm to his companion who drifted closer and held it out for him to land on. Once the crow had gotten comfortable on his friend's arm, Surutameni leaned in close and whispered some commands to the bird. As he drew his head back his tossed the feathered animal back into the air and pointed up.

"Go scout, Unmei!" He took off without even a look back, squawking and cawing as his flew upwards, trying to find the terminal that the duo had been hoping to find some time soon. Within a few seconds after the the bird had flown north towards the exit, there was an unbelieveably loud sound that came from below the pair. As Surutameni glanced down, he saw a shape rapidly approaching their position. Fearful that it would be The Cabal, the boy plastered his body to the wall of the lift, hoping to all of the Gods that he would not be ripped from his position and thrown below to be splattered on the ground.

"Hey, I don't know if y'all missed the memo, but the lift is closed for renovations. I've heard on the grapevine they're adding in a snack cart."

A new voice met his ears as he kept himself glued in place, his limbs now shaking uncontrollably. Making it completely impossible for him to continue. As he looked above once more he could make out the shape of yet another shinobi, and his heart skipped, hoping still that it was not someone who was going to make this mission even more difficult than it already was.

"Takeshi, Surutameni.... Suru if you find my name a bit of a mouthful."

The boy responded.

"Black is my favorite color, though it's almost like seeing nothing..."

Over the course of the next several minutes she learned that his favorite color was the same as hers, the only one she could see: black.

"You can't see? Is there a reason for that?"

"Tried to resurrect my family, lost my eyes."</B><i></i> Shiori answered matter of factly. Failure always had a price and for her it was her vision was among the many consequences she suffered for the taboo she committed. She had no reign over the Maelstrom and she had the fortitude of a neophyte. She learned from her folly and she would not make the same mistake twice - she would make new mistakes instead.

"I can. He usually prefers to stay close, but he'll go look if I tell him to. Go scout, Unmei!"

She listened hard for Suru's crow. Instead of hearing the gentle flap of a wing or the distant caw of the gentle avian she heard a startlingly loud *pop* that sounded more like a clap of thunder going off inches from her ear. Her acute auditory instruments pounded with pain as the reverberations from the stranger's dynamic entry assaulted her senses. The ruckus bounded off the walls and back down to the floor and her vision with it at the speed of sound, it was a blast of perfect sight. Better than the soft cry of Unmei. The vision was seared into her brain but only for a moment and she could not get a good look; it was like a flash that illuminated a space so bright that you were left in the dark for some time after. Why did it have to be so loud? It hurt... The shock caused her to loosen her grip, her fingers gave way from the disruption and she swung inward, away from the wall in the wake of the interloper's passage and she almost descended to the floor. Shiori let out a scream that also ((echoed)) resonating not only in the cylindrical space but also in her mind compounding her sightless affliction. She wheeled about and wildly grabbed at the wall, she could not see where her hands were placed nor could she make a new one in this desperate state. She clawed at the aged and cracked sandworm innards and ripped away at a superficial layer that broke off. Her other hand caught hold of her previous hand-hole and she grabbed tight for her very life. It was a long way back down and she did not want to take the fastest route back to earth. She was breathing heavy, her heart was pounding in her breast but she was probably safe.

Whatever it was, it shot past her in a blur. She could hear the crack and the crunch through the ringing in her ears as whatever or whoever it was made a perch just past them.
"What was that?"<i></i> Shiori asked herself or possibly the youth out loud. It looked like a person had shot past them. "You alright?" She called down to her climbing partner, assuming the boy had not lost his grip and fell to his death already.

She could not see beyond the obstructive layers of cloth and the mask of the man, beast or specter that flew past them. Was it the Specter? She had only seen Mikaboshi's image for a brief moment, his hawk-like features and the terrible expression painted on his visage when he killed those men and when that blade pierced this chest. She tried to remove it but is words and his tone, all of his manner suggested he would have went in for the kill if she interacted with the runic blade. With all things considered, the mask was an improvement.
"Specter?" Shiori called to the figure ahead of her, unsure if this would be a moment to rejoice or a moment to climb back into the hole.

"Hey, I don't know if y'all missed the memo, but the lift is closed for renovations. I've heard on the grapevine they're adding in a snack cart."</COLOR><i></i>

Darn or thank the gods... Neither seemed right. That was not Mikaboshi, she knew his voice as well as that of many others but she did not know the owner of that sound. If words could be color, his would be 'dark goldenrod.' <COLOR color="red">"Yeah, that's why we are climbing!" Shiori shouted, her voice unnecessarily loud as she tried to vocally overpower the high-pitched monotone whine in her ears. <B>"The Kazekage is up there, we are going to get him!" <i></i> She declared and pointed with her dominant hand upward, nearly slipping off the wall. She quickly regained her balance with her left, her palm stuck to the surface like glue as her right hand walked to their previous holding hole.

This pair seemed an unusual sort. Their position already made it unusual due to climbing the wreckage of the lift system in hopes to leave the village which could potentially leave it in ruins. That was odd. The fact he was called a specter at first was perhaps the more normal anomaly out of the situation. Spirits and ethereal beings were as common in Wind Country was waster was to Mist Country or trees to Fire Country. Some answers were needed, and sitting attached to the wall by flimsy string and unreliable footholds a comfortable conversation did not make. He gazed at his curled fist that was lodged into the wall of the chasm and it would reveal that it had not brute forced a hole into the rock, but morphed into it and would not let him go even if he wanted to.

"Okay, don't freak out or do anything nutso. Just hold tight for a quick second."<i></i> The runic symbols on his free hand glowed dimly and he shoved that hand into the wall and focused. Like this he could feel the uneven surface of the wall they were attached to like it was his own skin; rough, worn, and in need of some serious moisturizing. Soft grumbles sounded out of the rockface as it sounded like something crawled around just beneath the surface. In a few seconds time, lips of earth would form underneath the dangling pair and give them a place to stand, alleviating the stress of the situation that he had apparently placed them in, "There you go, just settle down a bit."<i></i>

This was an important pit stop to take for two reasons; Uri needed to figure out why they were heading to the surface and how they were planning on getting out; it would also provide them a chance to peek over the edge to see what awaited them and not be exhausted from their ascent. The masked chuunin created his own miniature shelf and plopped down onto it, letting his legs dangle and swing like a child would on a swing. A single hand reach up and withdrew the shawl from his face and dropped the coverings from his head to reveal the white hair and brown eyes of the candy-loving architect.

"I don't feel like snacks are worth putting everyone in the village at risk, don't you?"<i></i> He led in with the joke; there was such rare opportunities as of late for them. Then he got serious, "And even if Sousuke is outside, which many signs point to 'Yes', what does reaching him accomplish except maybe killing off the entire village he's responsible for? I'm not the Steward, but I don't think he'd approve."<i></i> A few nods followed to affirm his statement.

And then he raised a finger, an quzzical expression taking over his serious face, "And by Mother Suna's tit, why would you use the front door to try and get out? I know some of us have gotten lazy on the whole shinobi front, but lemme tell ya, it's the obvious route and its well-defended."<i></i>

"Yeah, that's why we are climbing! The Kazekage is up there, we are going to get him!"

As his partner in crime responded to their newest arrival, Surutameni sighed heavily. He knew she sounded a bit out of her own mind, but he was tied to her so complaining would probably only get him tossed to the ground. Even though he was more than shocked at the fact that he hadn't fallen already. He looked up at the stranger and held onto a shread of hope that they would save him from her.

"Okay, don't freak out or do anything nutso. Just hold tight for a quick second."

Surutameni was rather confused as the man told them just to hold tight until his grip started to fail as the walls groaned and began to push out below his very feet. He scrabbled to hold himself there upon his jelly like limbs. Luckily the earthen shelf finished its creation just as the boy fell from his purchase on the wall and landed heavily on his back. His head and arms dangled over the edge as he gasped for air, his heart beating rapidly he lay there, unmoving on his little piece of safety.

"There you go, just settle down a bit."

He turned his gaze upwards once more, giving a great sigh of relief as this newcomer had just saved his life. The young boy started laughing as he rolled himself over and stared off the edge, shock getting the better of him. Surutameni turned his amber hued eyes down to marvel at how far he and Shiori had actually managed to climb without tumbling sooner.

"I don't feel like snacks are worth putting everyone in the village at risk, don't you?"

His attention snapped back to the man sitting above them, he was now swinging his legs off the edge of the lip he had created for himself.

"I sure don't," He paused briefly to gather his thoughts, "but, this lady is crazy. And I didn't think she would take no for an answer...."

As he spoke he waved his hand in Shiori's general direction and sat himself close against the wall, wrapped his arms around his knees, still trying to gain control over his heart rate and breathing.

"And by Mother Suna's tit, why would you use the front door to try and get out? I know some of us have gotten lazy on the whole shinobi front, but lemme tell ya, it's the obvious route and its well-defended."

Surutameni's companion cawed over head and landed on the platform with the new arrival, he hopped closer and eyeballed the man before pecking and pulling at the lower portion of his top. The boy remained silent though, highly unsure of why he actually opted to go with this woman on this insane expedition. He had managed to convince himself that it was his only choice but, now he was second guessing his decision. Especially after hearing about the fact that the gate was well defended. He hadn't even really thought about that.

"Unmei!" The boy called to his avian friend who squawked at the white haired man and jumped into the air to glide down and perch on Surutameni's platform.

"Okay, don't freak out or do anything nutso. Just hold tight for a quick second."</B><i></i>

OHGODTHEWALLISMOVING!

He warned her to not freak out, but whenever somebody tells you that it is because you verily should freak out. The walls began to shift and Shiori grabbed onto whatever she could in a strangle-like grasp.
"Crap...!Fucking...Crap!" She yelled in addition to other expletives that the NC-14 rating system would disallow in such rapid succession. She expected to plummet nearly a kilometer to her death, her best estimation of how far they had climbed before this stranger was encountered. Her trepidation was for naught as a platform soon formed beneath her feet. It was with hesitation and a perturbed sightless glare at the freshly made platform that she loosened her grasp but she did not sit nor stand on it, rather she prodded at it with a toe. For all she knew it was going to break away her new found foothold as soon as she relaxed. She thought about resting on it but thought better of it and maintained her hold.

"There you go, just settle down a bit."

She frowned at the likely perilous platform. "I don't trust it," she announced stubbornly. It was an honest statement, the modification of existing structure and the manipulation of earth was not a common skill. Who was this guy? "You a Sunahoshi or something?"<i></i> She asked, her hand still in the pockmark and refusing to let go. The respite would have been appreciated if she was absolutely sure that it would not be the cause of her death. Her back and legs ached, she was not a manual worker in the least. She was an anomaly among shinobis for a plethora of reasons not limited to her painted nails, absence of callouses and a lack of recent scars. The fact is, she had never made a trip to the surface in at least 20 years, being that those are her earliest memories. She wondered if he was a guard or a Cabal member, she had thankfully had minimal contact with their kind but the few brushes she had with them started and ended bloody.

"I don't feel like snacks are worth putting everyone in the village at risk, don't you?"

What are you talking about? Shiori shot back. She was not putting anyone at risk except maybe the unfortunate boy who tethered himself to her. "A kid in tow is hardly a village," Shiori countered.

"I sure don't, but, this lady is crazy. And I didn't think she would take no for an answer...."

What? Why are they agreeing? Up is the most important place to go. Up is out and up is where Sousuke is. "I am not crazy!"<i></i> She snapped, her jugular veins were noticeable. "A sword that is not a sword anymore told me that Sousuke was up there. I am going to bring him home before the sword tells me he is dead or he eats someone else,"<i></i> she repeated with cut and dry logic. Yep, that was the story, hell it was the truth.

"And even if Sousuke is outside, which many signs point to 'Yes', what does reaching him accomplish except maybe killing off the entire village he's responsible for? I'm not the Steward, but I don't think he'd approve."<i></i>

"Not reaching him will kill the village," Shiori argued. "Finding him can only help us with those lunatics running a-muck," she complained.

"And by Mother Suna's tit, why would you use the front door to try and get out? I know some of us have gotten lazy on the whole shinobi front, but lemme tell ya, it's the obvious route and its well-defended."<i></i>

Her face became flushed.
"Leave my tits out of this!" She released her grip on the wall for a moment and fell two inches onto the platform, her heart leap to her throat expecting the worse. The worst was fragile ground. This was the second worst, that her worries was for naught. The second worst thing happened. "Why would I care if the lift is defended?"<i></i> Shiori added, oblivious still to the peril. How her quest to recover the errant Kazekage would decimate the village made no sense to her. Was Sousuke exiled or a criminal, some way response for the chaos? If so, his absence made no change for the better. <B>"You're not doing a good job defending the cave, look how far I got," she was proud of her achievement, she had not so much as climbed a rope since shinobi 101: gravity is not your friend. She did poorly in that class, gravity was not her friend nor was her tailbone.

They seemed to be at odds with one another, and since Surutameni thought someone more sane had arrived, he quickly appealed to Uri for rescue. Casual was Uri in a nutshell and as he sat there, watching for a moment he realized that no one there had the full picture. Ironically, this was the story of Sunagakure since the siege had started. Everyone knew some key pieces of information, but no one had all of them. It just showed more and more that they needed to come together to better understand the problem and so they could fix it.

"Oh, you have to be talking about Mikaboshi. Only person I know who actively eats people in this village."<i></i> Rumors surrounded the shadowed figure almost as well as the darkness of the cave. Everyone knew the name, but just considered him the boogie man and didn't actually think he existed. Any shinobi worth their salt knew better. Scary things that go bump in the night were often real enough to be a threat. Fumbling through the folds of his outfit, inevitably reaching the brown armatunk hide jacket and retrieving a brightly colored lollipop. Candy firmly held between his lips, he spoke out of the corner of his mouth; his speech was only slightly altered due to the frequency of the habit. "Lets recap real quickly then, since I don't want to hold you up: The village came under attack about three days ago by a group of militant figures. They have threatened to blow up the entire village if they find anyone entering or exiting. They have released all the prisoners from the Obsidian Palace AND all the loonies from the psyche ward. I think that about covers it."<i></i>

Uri popped the sucker out from his lips and peered down at the kid, "And everyone has a choice. It's those decisions that matter. I suspect numerous people have made poor ones and that's why we're at where we're at. Hold tight again."<i></i> Free hand glowing dimly, he faced his open palm toward the ceiling and slowly raised it. The two platforms Shiori and Suru were on lifted until they leveled out with Uri's.

"And it's hard work defending this cave. Lots of bad guys and only one me. I can only be in so many places at once, y'know?"<i></i> Now that they were closer, they could see the wear on the chuunin's face. Uri always appeared much younger than his age let on, but this time the creases in his face had become deeper and his voice worn out. Sucker back in place, he took a deep breath and eyed Shiori, purposefully excluding Surutameni since he didn't seem interested in following the crazed blind woman any farther. "Telling you what I know, are you still set on getting outside?"<i></i>

"And everyone has a choice. It's those decisions that matter. I suspect numerous people have made poor ones and that's why we're at where we're at. Hold tight again."
Uri stared down at Surutameni while holding his candy and gave the boy, what seemed to be a rather judging gaze.

As he mentioned the last bit, Surutameni felt the platform that he was perched delicately upon lurch and move upwards towards the man above him.
"I was just bored." He pouted and stared at the ground rather ashamed of himself for having hinted that he didn't actually want to be here. It was quite the opposite, as scared as he was the boy was more than happy to go along on this crazed journey. It gave him a sense of adventure that he rarely achieved, and made him think more about the positives that could come out of finding the Kazekage, even though there were far more negatives at this stage.

As the two adults chattered about the fact that the cave was a pain to defend, Suru's mind began to wander once again to all of the things that he had never seen, including actual daylight.
"What's it like outside?" He spat out the question before he could get a handle on how ridiculous the question sounded. Immediately after the sentence left the child's mouth, his face turned a bright red, and he buried his face in his hands.

OC: Was getting worried, just glad you are back man.

IC:

"Oh, you have to be talking about Mikaboshi. Only person I know who actively eats people in this village."

So he KNEW that there was a people-eating monster living in Sunagakure? How the hell could he be so casual about it? That is like saying that you KNOW that the hunks of meat in the Ramen are made of cat but continue to eat it anyway. Does he eat people too? Probably not, apparently Mikaboshi was the only one according to his statement. How long had Mikaboshi been out of Sousuke's sword then? Months... Weeks... Months? She also wondered how many shared the fate of his keeper. She did not mourn the deaths of those slain only hours earlier, she had come to understand her limited regard for the life of others. Concern was only an image fostered by social influences she had grown accustomed to as a 'human.' It seemed shameful or perhaps selfish to disregard life in such a way, lives were supposed to be things of intangible value and it seemed cruel that her morality has shifted so over such a short time. Perhaps even then it was a falsehood, the greatest lies are the ones you tell yourself until you believe them as fact. If that was true, then why did she feel so conflicted? So guilty? Perhaps she wanted to feel regret, that is what society tells one that they should feel when their emotions are contrary to the set standard.

I think that about covers it."</B><i></i>

"Wait... WHAT?" Shiori's brow furrowed with the off-handed comment regarding the village exploding. It was like mentioning to a patient: by the way, you have cancer of the everything... So how about them cacti? Killing the village would be the collateral damage of completing the task she had dedicated herself to. She really did not care. That was not right, she CARED. Yes, she cared very much about it. Why did she feel a sickness in the pit of her stomach, was it concern or was it guilt for her lack of concern. It was the later rather than the former. She should feel something for their lives, it was something that she was supposed to do as a human. She was no peer of humanity, in fact it was their betrayal that left her in such a lonesome state. They became her compeer because there was nobody else, because she needed them. Yet the conflict suggested something more convoluted than simply the fickle mind of an ancient. She had lived as a human among the humans for too long and over time she forgot her cause and her concern, there was a time when she loved humanity and she loved her own people and she was torn. "How do you know that the village is going to blow up?" Shiori debated, her hand reaching for a firm hold on the wall. She was illiterate, the warning scrawled on the walls meant nothing to her as she passed them by. "It makes no sense for THEM to blow up the village... THEY would be buried alive with the rest of us." She concluded, if it was a suicide mission that the Cabal was after they would have already blown the village to pieces, rather they are toying with the remaining population. The actions taken thus far to Shiori's understanding were the actions of men and women who enjoyed anarchy, sadism and power... their actions may be that of one with a death wish, but they would want control over even their demise.

"And everyone has a choice. It's those decisions that matter. I suspect numerous people have made poor ones and that's why we're at where we're at. Hold tight again."

That was all the warning she had before their platforms were elevated again.
Crap-Crap-Crap-Crap. Shiori clawed at the wall trying to prevent her ascent, the rocks stronger than simple flesh and bone she felta snap and her hand relinquished its grasp. Her middle finger was displaced and slightly deformed she balled her adjacent into a fist and cracked the unruly joint back into place. She grimaced as the searing burst of pain ran up her afferent nerves like a blast from a furnace before running cold. "Will you stop doing that!"<i></i> Shiori scolded as she wiggled her finger to make sure that it still worked. "I only have ten of these," she complained after she verified that her finger did in fact work.

"And it's hard work defending this cave. Lots of bad guys and only one me. I can only be in so many places at once, y'know?"

She was now level with this 'gate guardian,' or whatever he might actually be. She contemplated holding onto the wall of security again, but she was tired of being ripped away from her safe place on a whim. She did not want to venture far from the wall, the wall was her life-line. She did not know this Uri from any other Sunan or Cabal member. He was not attacking, yet but he could still be an opponent. Her tension, was mounting during this tête-à-tête but the boy was oblivious of the potential danger.

"Telling you what I know, are you still set on getting outside?"

"What's it like outside?"

He interrupted what would have been a brief moment of tense silence for Shiori. Her brain screamed at the boy, but perhaps his indifference would be his saving grace. "Can't remember," Shiori admitted, trying to be polite. "You'll see soon enough," she muttered gravely. She had to think and she had to think quick. This platform manipulating, candy-eating, alleged gate guard could be either a Sunan shinobi or a member of the Cabal. He did not fit the profile of the later, but his actual vocation made no difference at this time. No matter which he was, he would not let her pass. IF he was a member of the Cabal, it was likely that the boy's life would be forfeit, he would plummet to his death. There was a chance that she might escape, but it would not be unscathed. The vertical battlefield left her at a disadvantage. IF he was a Sunan shinobi, he would not allow his people to become collateral damage and he would fight to stop her. The kid would probably get killed in the cross-fire or because he was an alleged accomplice.

She would have to bluff her way past him. She had no intention of fighting him or anyone else. It was a long way down and the platform that supported her weight in such a precarious manner would lead to an unfortunate landing if it gave way beneath her.
"You have no intention of letting me pass, you asked me twice for the sake of your conscious. That means I have to either return to the caverns and do nothing OR face you..." She was not threatening him, her voice was calm but she was unsure of her next move and she was buying time so that she could think of a plan. If she fought him, there was a good chance that someone would plummet to their death, probably the boy if he maligned himself against the candy munching shinobi. "I am not going to place Sunagakure at risk... I had no idea that bombs were armed to go off... Those bastards," she sighed. "I am sorry for putting the village in additional peril,"<i></i> she lied. She had a plan.

"It is a long way down," she mused out-loud as she relinquished her spot against the wall of Barynx and approached Uri, her hand gesturing the boy to stay at her side. "Let's have a drink before we climb down, I am exhausted."</COLOR><i></i> She admitted as she reached deep into her bag and pulled out a pair of drinks and handed one to the candy-muncher and the other to the crow-boy. <COLOR color="red">"Sorry about them being diet," she appologized as she rested her head against the wall. Lying takes a lot of work, that is why the truth always prevails, liars could never remember their claim. She started to hum a gentle tune that resembled a lullaby. She was already tired, but the summit was not far, she was sure of it. She was trying to knock the duo out, she would not kill them, she would simply relocate them outside of the maw. It was for their own good, like it or not, she was going to get out of the village. IF the warning held true, there would be a lot of death but at least she would spare two.

<B>Drinks provided: Energy Drink x2. UNPOISONED

Song Jutsu: Temple of Nirvana A Rank Will Genjutsu sung using Hashigaki Activated passive Enthralling Voice to effect BOTH Uri and Surutameni.

If successful:
Shiori would attempt to bind them with her remaining ninja wire and then kidnap them -- goal would be to ascend to the top of the maw and -try- to break out. o_O;;

If failed:
She pretends that she simply likes to sing and continues to try until they finish their energy drinks whilst she devises a back-up plan.

Uri was more than happy to allow Shiori to go about her risk assessment. Either she was completely clueless or she was recklessly ignorant. Despite her intentions, she was right, the chuunin had no intention of allowing her to leave the village through the gates. It was suicide for not only her and the kid she insisted on dragging along, but for everyone they were leaving behind. While she seemed to relent, his instincts told him that she was attempting to ruse him in the worst kind of way. She had already stated her intent well before her sudden change of heart.

'You'll see soon enough.'

That was determination and confidence in danger amounts. Few, if any ever just flipped the table and decided against it without having ulterior motives lurk somewhere beneath the surface. A gentle wave of his hand dismissed the proffered energy drink and he gestured to his sucker, "No thanks, it's either copious amounts of sugar or nothin'."<i></i> And in that moment he couldn't trust her. In her defense, Uri had trusted few since this whole ordeal had happened. If his life were to be forfeit, it would be by his own decisions, not by those of others. Adrenaline and a steadfast resolve did do wonders on occasion and Uri was fortunate enough that the genjutsu weaved into the simple singing hadn't taken hold of his mind. A nagging sense of danger in the back of his head hadn't allowed him to sleep properly for awhile, and so the suggestion simply rolled off of him like it had before.

Popping the fruit-flavored treat from between his lips, he looked between the two and sighed. Uri was tired and it was troublesome to always be on one's guard, "Outside is bright and brilliant and endless with chances to explore a vastness that makes this cave seem like a cramped room."<i></i> The thought had idly left his lips, not even paying attention to the fact if the student had remained awake or not.

Raking a hand through his pale-colored hair gave Shiori a hard look.

"You are right on one part. I have no intention of letting you pass and get to the gates, and I am certainly not asking you to do nothing. Sousuke is as much family to me as my mother is, but I cannot let you risk the lives of everyone here."<i></i> Among those lives were a select few people Uri cared about and would destroy worlds to see them safe. Carefully getting to his feet, he would rap his bare knuckles against the wall of Barnyx. "But if I can provide another way out for you, one that won't get everyone in the village blown to smithereens, and isn't directed squarely through a wall of enemy combatants, would you trust me enough to take you there?"<i></i>

Even though their was a supreme dislike of the village on Uri's part, he had spent so much time working in the darkened hallow that he knew it as well, if not better than most people who had helped build it. In fact, his family had been partly responsible for it, whether any knew that or not. The Cabal had made some brazen claims and even more bold threats, but a team as well-planned as this simply did not come in without an exit strategy. Uri's ability to track and find things in the environment others couldn't see had led him to a discovery, one he was certain was safe to use.

"You'll see soon enough."

Shiori didn't really seem to have the greatest response for Surutameni's blurted question but, it would have to do in the long run as she continued talking to Uri about the fact that she had a change of heart. This confused the boy, seeing as not many people have a change of plans in that little amount of time. It bummed him out a little, seeing as his curiousity was peaking about a number of things.

As the adults chattered away, Unmei squawked wantonly and rubbed his avian head under Surutameni's hand. He scratched his head absentmindedly as the bird cooed and purred (if birds indeed actually purred). Shifting the gaze of his amber eyes to the animal in front of him, he smiled. "Unmei, you should go find Ten. I'm sure she'd have a rather fun time with this." Surutameni whispered to the bird, trying to take precautions so that the two others didn't overhear him. Unmei bounced off away from the platform and dove straight down, his wings making an audible snap that echoed up the cavern walls as he pulled them open to glide through the entryway to the Maw. He headed for the Grand Palais and Tenrousei and Xei, their two friends from the slums.

"Let's have a drink before we climb down, I am exhausted."

Surutameni's attention once more returned to the woman and man before him, Shiori was handing them both drinks. Uri, refused and stated he'd rather chomp on a rather large amount of sugar, or just having nothing all together. He on the other hand, could use the hydration and energy, so he accepted her offer and cracked open the can rather hurridly, and took a sip. As he did, for some reason Shiori started singing, the boy began to grow oddly tired, and struggled to keep his attention focused upon what was happening in front of him.

"Outside is bright and brilliant and endless with chances to explore a vastness that makes this cave seem like a cramped room."

He blinked his eyes rapidly as another response to his earlier question was haphazardly thrown to him, it didn't exactly come out clear as the world faded to black and the boy truely fell asleep. Unaware to him that Shiori had plans and would do anything to see them through.

OC: Thank God, OC I had no idea what I would do with 2 sleeping players. This would have been the most boring thread ever but IC she is not the most confrontational. *wipes away sweat from her brow*

IC:

</I></COLOR>
She was a terrible liar...

"No thanks, it's either copious amounts of sugar or nothin'."

He was right to not trust her, the drink was untainted but her song was not. She had ill intent, but not for their ultimate harm but rather their removal as a barrier to her progression. Perhaps she should not have said "diet," she regretted it when she did not hear the can crack and she had started her song. She had no idea how durable he was, in fact how durable either of them were. A careless illusion could inadvertently kill most civilians, that was the intent of the drink, to keep them alive because unlike some... her illusions actually hurt.

</I>
He was unaffected...

The candy-muncher had to be at least Jounin Rank in power, perhaps more. He did not even yawn. It would have been so much easier if he had fallen asleep. She did not want to hurt anyone. She was far from a gentle soul from what little she knew of her origins, all of those old tales of a matronly figure were simply that... tales, but in a way she had forgotten how to be cruel. Sunagakure, for all that it had lacked had been good to her for these past two decades and this short time as a human had changed her. Still, her heart was never in those caves, while she was utterly incapable of raising a hand against another, she also was not compelled to act in a way that ensured anyone in particular's safety.

The boy whispered to his bird to find someone Shiori had never heard of. She was not going to stop him, for all she knew this other person might be a favorable asset. Hopefully the kid was not calling for his student girlfriend, assuming he had one.

"You are right on one part. I have no intention of letting you pass and get to the gates, and I am certainly not asking you to do nothing. Sousuke is as much family to me as my mother is, but I cannot let you risk the lives of everyone here."</B><i></i>

She could not see the hard look but she could hear his tone. In a lot of ways, Shiori was a child regrowing at a stunted pace. Her selfish ambition to find Sousuke was all that compelled her but to be fair, there was nothing else of value in her life. Certainly she had a name that she had stolen and a 'family' that was nothing more than a group of actors playing their part in a play. Sousuke was the only real link to reality she had and she was unwilling to compromise what little she had left even at the most grave of cost. The candy-muncher of course had things he cared about just as she did, probably more since her world was woefully small in comparison to most. "I have never met you," she responded warily. Sousuke was like family to him. Even with her rose-colored shades she knew that Sousuke was not a friendly man, he was a social retard but he was not a bad man. Perhaps he had some friends, but she would have thought that she would have known the people close to him. Of course she knew less than she thought she did regarding the errant Kazekage: she knew nothing of his lover, less than this stranger of the monster Mikaboshi, and when she woke in the midst of anarchy she was utterly alone. There was a revelation that came with these thoughts, an understanding that her sentiments had no mirror in Sousuke. It hurt...

How troublesome...

<COLOR color="darkgoldenrod">"But if I can provide another way out for you, one that won't get everyone in the village blown to smithereens, and isn't directed squarely through a wall of enemy combatants, would you trust me enough to take you there?"

She wanted to trust him, he was making her an offer that was the best of both worlds. <I>A way out without killing everyone in Sunagakure. There was just one problem with his statement: if such things were possible, why had he not done so already? Her mind was screaming at her that Uri was likely going to betray her one way or another. Uri did not that have the face or the manners of a killer but he could be a better liar than she. What were her choices? She could continue her ascent, an impossible plan considering his ability to make the walls deviate in ways beyond her present skill level. She could fight him, that would be a situation that was also not be to her favor: a vertical battlefield where handholds and footholds can be manipulated by a single combatant only. She would not last thirty seconds. She could consent and follow this candy-munching shinobi with mysterious powers over the terrain and the fortitude to resist her illusions. He had no reason to help her, it was likely he realized that she had tried to utilize a genjutsu on him as she child was knocked unconscious and remained unmoving still despite the song ceasing after it failed to take effect on her primary target. [Note: the reason for the energy drink was because Surutameni's max HP was less than the damage I would do with that Genjutsu alone, did not want to kill him.]

"I do not trust you at all," Shiori admitted with utmost honesty as she reached for the unconscious child and her hand began to glow green. <B>"But I consent all the same,"<i></i> she announced, perhaps it was foolishness or hubris. It was in fact neither, she would not be able to get past him without engaging him in combat over unfavorable terrain and she knew it. "I do not know who or what you are... not really. You could say you are whoever you want to be and I would not know any different, <I>but but I almost killed this kid with an illusion," she pointed to Surutameni "...and it did nothing to you at all." There was no reason to lie, no reason to make up a cover, she was not giving him any information that he did not know already but her momentary outburst was calculated as was her attempt to heal Surutameni. Surely she did not want to kill the boy, but moreover she wanted to demonstrate that the kid was not with her because she had included him in an attack that nearly took his life. The kid was safer half-dead, at least it would minimize his association with her if this stranger was a true Sunan shinobi. She let out a sigh of relief when the boy's heart found a stable rhythm and Surutameni regained a conscious state.

"If you could produce or find a path out, there would be no need to patrol these tunnels any longer except to herd the masses out... Even if you are working with the Cabal or an escaped convict, the possibility of reaching topside without killing anyone is enough for me to accept the risk."

That was what logic looked like when dealing with Shinobi and Genjutsu. Obvious facts lumped together would eventually spell out something that didn't make sense, like an illusion. Uri was not a master illusionist, not in the typical shinobi sense, but he was hyper-adept in chakra manipulation. The ethereal fingers attempting to take hold of his waking mind had been shrugged off due to his mind utterly denying the sensation it was attempting to force upon him. Genjutsu could be fickle like that, a reason why he preferred to deal in Ninjutsu and Elemental arts that could take on physical forms.

Uri remained on his perch, legs swinging away casually as he listened to Shiori admit to her attempt and go about tending to the poor kid who had just gotten pulled into a dangerous campaign.

"I'm too wired on sugar to want to fall asleep. Even if the suggestion had taken, I would have noticed."<i></i> He stated matter-of-factly. While Uri was a sub-par shinobi, he wasn't stupid and he often did things that allowed him to check his well-being. Countermeasures came in all shapes and forms, especially if one was clever enough. "And you can call me Uri, if you'd like."<i></i> Uri observed Surutameni for a moment and considered the student. What a terrible state of affairs. First the village is swallowed up by this ruckus and surviving amongst it all is inevitably taken out by one of the village's own. Shiori's identity was as much as mystery to Uri as he was to her, but he could at least prevent her from killing thousands of people due to misinformation or ignorance.

Getting up to his feet, he'd brush off his dusty palms and eye Shiori quizzically, "Yeah, because ushering out a few thousand people isn't obvious. I'd even consider replacing some with clones and moving some out, but there would reach a point when it would become too risky. Hell, someone could end up saying something to the wrong person and it sinks us all the same. Steady yourself and do. Not. Freak. Out."<i></i> He said, remembering Shiori's earlier reaction to his manipulations. A pressed palm against the wall of the shaft slowly moved the whole platform downwards. This time it was a snail's pace, to be a little less jarring. "And it does the village no good if its only few defenders just up and leave. Sousuke is a big boy and has friends with him, powerful ones at that."<i></i> That was a tidbit of information that wasn't commonly known. "Besides, the tunnel in question I believe to be the Cabal escape route in case they decide to blow the whole shebang. It could also work to bring people inside. It's way less noticeable sneaking one or two people in than it is getting the village's population out."<i></i>

Uri clearly wasn't a fool and had thought a lot about his actions and their potential repercussions. It also spoke to how well-informed he was of the situation. Maybe he did know too much and it would seem to Shiori that he was a Cabal agent luring her into a trap. The chuunin huffed and fumbled for a second lollipop inside the folds of his outfit, retrieving one that was swirled in bright blues and pinks. A few seconds passed and he was sucking away again.

"What exactly is your plan once you get out? Can you traverse the maelstrom even?"<i></i>

"...killing anyone is enough for me to accept the risk."

The young boy's eyes snapped open as he gasped for breath upon regaining consciousness. His heart beat rapidly as he struggled to completely comprehend what had happened. Surutameni rested his gaze upon Shiori as she attempted to heal him. He was confused, had she actually just tried to kill him? His mind raced with panic about the unknown possibilities. He didn't want to die here. No, he REFUSED to die here in this hole, never having stepped foot into the light, or having grown up. He slapped her hand away and scuttled back against the wall. Unsure of who he should trust the boy's amber eyes snapped back and forth between the woman in front of him and the man swinging his legs off their precarious platform. He wrapped his arms tightly around his knees that he had pulled up against his chest once more. It was an impulsive action that made him feel safer for some reason. His heart rate slowed as he closed his eyes and took a deep breath to steady himself. He glanced at the energy drink that was still within his hands, and quickly took a sip. It took the edge off of his anxiety, but the nagging questions still floated aimlessly through his mind. Is this really a good idea? Where is Ten and Xei? Has Unmei found them? How long was I out? The seemingly endless array made his head spin and the world started to lose it's sharpness as his vision blurred once more from the panic attack that threatened to rage through him.

"What exactly is your plan once you get out? Can you traverse the maelstrom even?"

Surutameni continued to cast his gaze between the two adults, cautious and anxious about the events that were about to unfold before him.

His mother named him after a MELON. Must be some delicious melon or somehow food came to mind when it was time to name him. "My name is supposed to be Takahashi Shiori," she answered immediately unsure if she had already mentioned her name and stolen lineage. She let out a sigh, she was almost at the top, she was sure of it and now she was descending back down the shaft and into the pit. What he said made sense in a way, but regardless of how large or small the group was-- if they were not at all of the exits and taking an inventory of the population, taking notes and counting heads they would have no time to complete whatever they task was. Were they simply meant to be their keepers? Sure, the exodus of hundreds, even thousands would be noticed as would the backlog from the funnel of citizens attempting to squeeze through whatever narrow passage led to freedom. There had to be a reason for the entrapment and the threat. If they intended to kill them, then what was with the game? If this was the work of a lone sociopath, the fear and the process leading to the ultimate demise would be a part of the ritual but that was not the case here. "The fact that the place was rigged to go never made much sense, even if they had a way out... the fact that they threatened us with it rather than -going boom- tells me that this is a stall tactic or..." she cut herself off just then, she was thinking but her mouth was quicker than her brain. "A lie." But who was the liar? Wouldn't it be funny if the Cabal was giving truths that they thought were lies? Then it would make more sense.

She shook her head, why was she trying to rationalize this? She did not care. She never did, even when she thought she was human. She only cared about finding Sousuke, if their reunion would be a happy one or one painted in red would be a tale told another day.
"Never mind," Shiori muttered as she brought a hand to her brow and shook her head side to side. "Should not question the legitimacy of something that could kill everyone," she added.

He sure liked his candy...

Sneaking Sousuke in would be no problem, assuming he was safe, something Uri seemed more sure of than she.
"How did you find this way out?" she queried, not entirely expecting an answer beyond the generic 'while I was doing my ninja stuff' answers. She just needed to fill otherwise the sounds of grinding earth would make her mind go mad. The kid was getting better, her hand was burning slightly, as if her medical technique was spilling over. "Did not mean to kill you," she mumbled apologetically, thankful that the boy took a drink from the energy drink she gave him. Without that, he would have possibly stayed dead. She could have brought him back in multiple ways, some taboo and some more socially accepted but she was thankful that she did not have to explore either of those options.</COLOR>

The child recoiled into a ball. She felt bad, and she disliked that feeling. Why was she feeling bad? How could she make that feeling stop? She needed to get him out of the ball pose he had chosen. Reassurance? That helps, right? She had seen it before, once or twice in the community, obviously never at home. There was a ritual to be had here. A chant:
"You're fine... Uh-- there? There?"<i></i> That was comforting right? She was comforting the human. There was patting involved, but patting seemed useless without healing. Was that an optional step?

<COLOR color="darkgoldenrod">"What exactly is your plan once you get out? Can you traverse the maelstrom even?"

"Yes"
she answered immediately with confidence in her voice. "...it is just Wind." Shiori added. The ground did not shudder and shake, if it had they would never be able to exist in their dusty subterranean bubble. "It is not a force of Earth and sand that creates the maelstrom nor was that the force that the Sunahoshi used to subdue the storm. The Sunahoshi already had the Sunaku blood in their veins... They took the wind, not the earth to quell the storm." She let out the rest of the air in her lungs with a short sigh, that was so long ago. The ancients were defeated utterly, and those who chose to remain as spectators still met the ire and the wrath of a people long subjugated by her race. A debt was to be paid, even by those who did not reap the benefits of their enslavement. Sunahaoshi Primus was a paragon example of the potential of man, his children no different than he. It was rumored that the Sunahoshi had Sunaku blood in their veins, their ability to use the diamond sands made for quite the public display but it was never elemental manipulation that Primus used in combat. It was that blade and his inhuman skill that felled the old lords. Humanity was always meant to brave the storm head on, even with the passage of time when the era of the ancients had gone and it was the time of man. Humanity was never meant to wield the power of an ancient, they had awesome power of their own that she would never truly understand or possess. Their ability to adapt and evolve, to change grow and be resilient is brilliant, beautiful and terrible.

"I am sure I can hold back a breeze..."
