Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

Ayumu had been a shinobi for many years before he was named the Raikage. He had started out as they all did: a student in the academy. Naturally, he graduated to become a Genin and actually spent his formative years in the Main Branch until he achieved the rank of Jounin. It was when he was on the cusp of adulthood that he entered the trainee program for ANBU. He joined the elite force for a number of reasons, but none of them involved a bid at leadership. Yet he had been rocketed towards that Sennin position faster than anybody could ever have predicted. Desperate times called for desperate measures. He had been Sennin for a few years before he had been forced to step down for medical reasons, yet duty called him once more soon after to become the Sennin of the Main. Ayumu had the experience of two branches under his belt. He had led them, but he also knew what it was to be among the rank and file of both. Yet there was one path his life had never led him to walk. The medical branch.

Junko had done an excellent job in making sure that Ayumu seldom had to worry about the Medical branch, but there were inevitably decisions he still had to make from time to time as Raikage. Decisions he wondered if he was fully qualified to make as one who had never walked the halls of the Aesculapium as anything but a patient or visitor. His predecessor had thought it wise to try to learn from the medical branch, and Ayumu had come to that same conclusion. For that reason, he found himself outside of Kahako's office that day. He had spoken to her already to get permission, today he was here to learn. They were to assess the new patients coming in. Rather, Kahako would do most of the work while Ayumu shadowed her and assisted where he could.

Taking a breath, Ayumu felt a bit nervous despite knowing he was going to see his fiance. It felt like his first day as a trainee in ANBU all those years ago. Would he actually be able to learn anything here, or was he never cut out to have anything to do with this branch? Only time would tell. He knocked at the door, waiting for Kahako's permission to enter and then stepped inside. Seeing Kahako calmed his nerves slightly. At least he had somebody he was more than comfortable with to learn from. He smiled for a moment and then stood at attention.

"Trainee Ayumu, reporting for duty!" he said sternly, giving a quick salute. "Please take care of me, Sensei," he added with a quick cheeky wink as his arm dropped back to his side. In his mind, he could hear the groan of the new passenger within. Almost always present, the spirit was subject to more of Ayumu's jokes than anybody. Ayumu smirked slightly. He took more joy out of annoying the spirit than he probably should have.

"If you two start playing doctor, I'm out."

“Okay, okay, okay…” She muttered, shifting nervously as she glanced over the night shift reports for what had to be the third time since she arrived. Yes, it was just Ayumu, and yes he was her fiancé, but the reason why he was visiting her today wasn’t because off their personal relationship, it was strictly professional. Actually, a bit of an order. Colored surprised, she never once expected Ayumu to specifically request for her to, as he put it, ‘show him the ropes,’ when it came to what went on with the Medical Branch. If anything, she figured he would ask Junko instead since he was the sennin. But Junko did have the rest of the hospital to run, and—from experience—she knew it wasn’t an easy feat.

Passing by the small mirror in her office on her wall, Kahako tried to comb fingers through her chin-length locks in a desperate attempt to appear professional. ‘Why, today of all days, did it have to rain?’ she mourned at the slight frizz. Was she ready to be able to show the Raikage, lover or no, what he needed to know to properly lead their village efficiently? Raiden, she hoped so. The nervousness swelled, and she fidgeted a little until a knock at the door broke her from her reverie. “Come in!” she called.

"Trainee Ayumu, reporting for duty!" he said sternly, giving a quick salute. "Please take care of me, Sensei," he added with a quick cheeky wink as his arm dropped back to his side

The salute immediately broke her from the tension she held. “I will do my best,” she responded with a chuckle and a smile. Tilting her head to the side, she made a soft noise. “However, even as ‘mednin-in-training’ for a day, you’re going to cause quite the stir if any shinobi pass through.” Tapping a finger to her chin, she then grabbed the cuff of his collar, pulling the hood of his cloak over his dark hair. “Well… it’s not the best disguise, but it will have to do unless you want to maintain a transformation jutsu for the next ten hours. Try to stay quiet, and any questions you may have we can address between patients.”

Letting her hands linger on his chest for a moment longer, she eventually turned and grabbed her medical tablet. “Well, no time like the present!”

It took them only a few minutes to get onto the elevator that lead to the triage section of the hospital, and in that time, Kahako began filling Ayumu in with its innerworkings. “I’m not sure if you are aware of the hierarchy inside the Aesculapium, but we differ significantly from that of the other two branches. At the highest level, there are two categories for medical operations: The field divisions and the hospital divisions.” Pressing a button onto the lobby floor, Kahako sunk a hip and started fiddling with her tablet. “Within the two, mednins are broken up further into six divisions: the Youritsu, the Harvesters, and the Sentou Henkan are the field divisions. The Research, Surgery, and General Practice Divisions make up the Hospital Divisions. Each division is managed by a Medical Chief specialized in the field, and the six are further broken down into smaller divisions based on specialized need in their generic field. No one but the Sennin is above the leaders of these six divisions, so debates on what goes on in the hospital when Junko isn't here can get a little… fierce.”

With the slight chime letting them know they reached their floor, both Kahako and Ayumu would be greeted to an area busy with people. Some were nurses, others mednin. Patients occasionally graced the halls as they were directed to areas cordoned off by blue curtains. “Today, I’ll be showing you what can happen in the General Practice divison. All mednin, from MiT to Sennin are a part of this hospital division along with the field division, the Youritsu. We start our training here, trying to find our… passions, so to speak, before advancing into another branch of our choice.” Walking up to one of the nurse’s desks, Kahako paused in her explanation to tap her tablet against a scanner, effectively clocking her in. With a ping, Ayumu would see the thing start to fill with what appeared to be patient files. GP was in full swing this afternoon. Clicking on the first of the long list, Kahako looked at Ayumu and waved the tablet at him with a grin. “Any questions before we begin? I might also suggest that after this you take some vitamins to boost your immune system for a few weeks. We deal with a lot of sick people here, and I’d hate to have you catch something.”

'If it turns out that way, I'll let you know so you can hide away somewhere in my mind or soul or however this works,' Ayumu reassured his passenger before turning his focus back to his fiancee. She smiled at first, but her look turned to one of contemplation as she considered the issue of the distraction he would cause. If everyone acted different because he was around it would be difficult to learn the normal operations of the hospital. Ayumu blinked as Kahako stepped close, grabbing his collar. 'Actually, you might want to-' he began to caution the spirit, but as the hood was pulled over his head he realized what was actually occurring.

"Ah. Good call," he said, reaching under the hood to smooth out his hair a little bit in hopes that it wouldn't be too matted down when he took down the hood later. 'Hahaha... you thought you were getting some,'<i></i> the spirit chuckled, amused at his host's misunderstanding. 'Shut it,' Ayumu replied. He was still getting used to this whole conversation in his head thing. It tended to be very distracting when he was interacting with other people. It didn't help matters that Kahako had no idea the spirit even existed. In truth, Ayumu was too afraid to tell her what he had taken on willingly. Given her current state sharing her body with two other souls, one of which was unabashedly evil, she would likely not be happy that he had taken on a demon even if the being within preferred not to be called by that term. In truth, Ayumu wasn't really certain what he had gotten himself into, but his conscience had told him that he couldn't destroy this thing that had done him, nor any innocents that Ayumu knew of, any harm just because of what it was. 'Quiet now, I need to concentrate so I can learn,' Ayumu insisted, devoting his full attention to Kahako.

Poor disguise established, Ayumu followed Kahako to the elevator and down to triage. He listened as she explained the various divisions of the branch. He had heard of the divisions, certainly, but was far from familiar with the intricate details. He knew what the harvesters were and naturally he knew the Sentou Henkan who worked with his former branch. The hospital divisions were much less familiar. Certainly he knew what the words that made up the division names meant, but he did not know really what they did. He also knew Kahako led the Sentou Henkan, but not that each division was headed by a different Med-nin chief, nor did he know who any of the other division heads were. After all, he mainly interacted with Kahako and Junko for any leadership matters. If the branch leaders had no one above them besides Junko, it made sense that the branch struggled a bit without him in the village.

"I see..." Ayumu uttered before the chime marked their arrival at their destination. Ayumu was greeted with a sight he had seen before. In fact, this was where Kahako and he had first met when he returned from a mission injured. She had patched him... the first of numerous times she had done so after his recklessness. Ayumu followed Kahako as she spoke, watching the screen of her device as it fileld with patient data. She asked if he had any question. His first would be, 'what the hell is that device in your hands' but at the moment it didn't seem too important.

"How do you know which patient to help first?" he asked, looking at the vast number of people in the ward. The illnesses and injurious seemed incredibly varied. Med-nin and staff were walking around everywhere and naturally there were more patients than there were of them. There had to be some organization to this seeming chaos.

At Ayumu’s question, Kahako would step closer to him so he could get a better view of the screen. About three or four names glowed on her tab along with a summary of health information the nurses gathered when they were admitted and a color at the end of the rows. “This color here indicates the level of severity in which a patient is injured. Green indicates that they will most likely live no matter what level of care they receive, yellow indicates they will likely not live no matter the level of care they receive, and red indicates a positive outlook of survival if they receive immediate medical attention.” Pointing to her list, Ayumu would see that all the current patients were green. “During certain states of emergency for the village, colors can be changed or added. It’s all to ensure that medical resources are being allocated efficiently enough so as the highest number of lives are saved. Looks like today will turn out to be a mostly slow one, Raiden willing.”

Clicking on the first name on the list, the row would expand with information about the one patient filling the entire screen. Age, date of birth, a picture of the girl, why she was here, along with notes and numbers that Ayumu would probably only understand if he had taken several medical courses. “Looks like our first patient injured herself while at the academy.” She said glancing over the paperwork before making her way down the hall.

Arriving at the curtain, Kahako knocked on the wooden beam holding the makeshift rooms up. “Hello,” she said pleasantly, waiting a second before pulling the curtain back. A blonde seven-year-old laid on the bed with a hospital gown on, and her foot elevated on a pillow. Her father, a Jounin based on the insignia on his vest, sat beside her. “My name is Dr. Shinrya Kahako, this is my assistant, Ayumu. He's here to learn today, if that's okay with both of you?” Kahako said, careful not to say his full name. With a nod, one of nonchalance from the father, and a sheepish one from the girl, Kahako would sit on the stool at the end of the bed and scoot closer. “So I heard you had a bit of a terrible spill today at school?”

Ayumu observed the digital screen, noting the names of the various patients, none of whom he recognized. He wondered how often it happened that a medical shinobi would stare at this screen and find a name that they did recognize. The thought of experiencing that was uncomfortable. He focused instead of Kahako's explanation. The system they had made sense and it was logical, though unavoidably it sounded a bit cold and calculating. Yet, Ayumu had no trouble understanding the need for such a system when resources were limited. Fortunately, it seemed nobody was currently in any real danger presently. Once a patient was selected, the information gathered by the intake specialists was displayed on the screen including a photo taken of the patient. It seemed she had fallen while at the academy. Their patient chosen, Ayumu followed behind Kahako until they reached a room where the young girl awaited with a man who was presumably her father.

Kahako introduced herself as well as, to his chagrin, Ayumu though she had not used his last name. Still, he was slightly concerned that the use of even his first name might allow him to be recognized fairly easily. For that reason, he kept his head down to try to avoid his face being seen as best possible. For the time being, nobody said anything. Ayumu nodded quietly as he realized that even his voice might contribute to the possibility of his recognition if he wasn't careful.

"You didn't think this all the way through, did you?" the spirit observed accurately. Ayumu ignored him as he tried to ascertain what injury the girl had obtained. Given the foot she had elevated, it didn't take a medic to determine that was probably the injured part, but what, exactly, was wrong? Now it was the time to watch Kahako work.

The blonde girl looked between her doctor for the day and the man who stood behind her. She shifted nervously when the man lowered his head, trying to hide his face more and more from the two, but started to explain what happened regardless. “We… we were practicing our chakra control in class. It was a simple exercise, to walk up a wooden pole.” She shifted in her bed a little. “I got pretty high, but then I lost control, and fell. When I landed, it felt funny, and I felt a sharp pain in my ankle. Then it got really big.”

Nodding her head to show she was listening, Kahako rolled herself to the girl’s leg. “Do you mind if I press on it a little bit?” She asked calmly. Not really willing to feel pain, the girl looked to her father for assistance. He nodded silently, which reassured her a little.

“…okay…” With the girl’s permission, Kahako carefully raised her leg, starting at the base of her knee and very gently pressing while she moved down her leg.

“Let me know the moment you feel pain, and I will stop, ok?” she reassured. Slowly as she moved her and towards her ankle, Kahako addressed Ayumu without looking away from what she was doing. “Right now, I’m checking for noticeable abnormalities in her leg. Even though her ankle is swollen, there could have been a break in either her tibia or fibula that you could notice without an x-ray. We’re still going to have to do one, as there are a bunch of little bones in her ankle that we would be unable to find by just touch.”

While Kahako continued her process, the little girl eyed Ayumu. The fact that he wasn’t responding to Kahako made the girl a little more uncomfortable. If he was learning, why wasn’t he asking and questions? She turned her head to try to get a better look. “Mister Ayumu… you wouldn’t by any chance be the Raikage Ayumu, would you?”

Ayumu continued to observe quietly, but he could feel the girl's inquisitive eyes on him, watching him suspiciously as Kahako worked. He may not have been outed as the Raikage, but the presence if a hooded man looming behind the doctor was just as distracting if not more so.

"You're creeping the poor girl out," the spirit commented, stating the obvious. This wasn't going to work. After this patient, Ayumu would need to figure something else out. For now, he just tried to focus on what Kahako was doing as she explained it. He watched as she gently felt for anything unusual in the girl's leg and nodded quietly in understanding. Yet, the girl was not content to simply allow Ayumu to silently observe. Ayumu froze as she addressed him and in a way only a child could do, guessed with complete accuracy who he truly was under the hood.

"Busted!"

Ayumu could feel another set of eyes upon him now as well. The father was looking now too. He needed to act quickly as now it would be far too suspicious if he said nothing. Hiding one hand under his cloak, Ayumu formed a quick seal with one hand, a useful trick he had been perfecting lately. Underneath his hood, his appearance rapidly changed until he no longer looked a bit like himself. Once the change was complete, he lifted his face up and reached up to pull back his hood, letting it fall behind his head. Smiling, he shook his head.

"Nope... just a coincidence. I'm not famous, just a trainee on his first day! You wouldn't believe how many times I've been asked that since he became Raikage, though. Some people say we even look alike!" he said happily in a voice that was not his own before sporting a large friendly grin. In fact, he had borrowed the voice and appearance of his friend Shuusei Touma. The man was an ANBU Captain that wore a face mask even when he didn't don the ANBU mask. There were very few in the village that actually knew what his face looked like, which made it a fantastic disguise in a pinch. He really didn't look a thing like Ayumu.

"Kahako-sensei, why can't we just use a medical jutsu to heal it straight away?" he asked, partially to upkeep the appearance of a medical trainee but also because it was a legitimate question he had.

“Mister Ayumu… you wouldn’t by any chance be the Raikage Ayumu, would you?”

Immediately, Kahako’s back straightened at the question. She knew the hood wasn’t going to be enough to hide Ayumu’s identity, but she didn’t think it would be a child to oust her fiancé. She turned just in time to see Ayumu lower his hood.

But it wasn’t her husband she saw. Instead in his place, wearing his clothes, was a man she’d never seen before. A Transformation Jutsu? And he did it without anyone in the room noticing. After the very nice save, he asked her a question that she always heard. “While medical jutsu is capable of a great many things, there are still flaws to always using it.” She let go of the girl’s leg, going back to her tablet, and once again submitting a request for the girl to be placed in a que for an x-ray scan.

“For one, while we have the capability to heal a bone, it cannot reset it.” With the ping of a message being sent, Kahako offered up a smile to her young patient. “For another, when you use medical jutsu, you force the cells in the human body to reproduce in a way that is not natural for the cells. If you over use healing jutsu, it can end up harming your patient instead of helping them. It’s all about balance, like you learned in your chakra control class, ne?” </COLOR><i></i>she said with a wink.

The girl, now embarrassed, as she believed she guess incorrectly, simple nodded. “So… will I have to wait until my leg heals naturally? It still hurts, kinda” she asked. Kahako hummed.

<COLOR color="#004000">“Well, I didn’t feel anything wrong in your leg, so we’ll have wait until you get your x-ray and the results come back. But Ayumu-kun can do something for the pain in the meantime.” Motioning him over, she showed him a few quick handseals for Anesthetic Infusion. “It’s a simple jutsu that can be used to lessen pain for a short while. Something this weak will not cause any concequence.”

"Heh, good save..." the spirit congratulated Ayumu. The disguised Raikage breathed a subtle sigh of relief as it appeared everyone had bought his transformation and hadn't notice it occur. He was extremely glad that he had devoted some time to learning how to perform some simple jutsu with one hand almost immediately after the spirit had told him it was possible. It'd be a pain, but in the future he would probably have to maintain transformation whenever visiting patients. For now, it seemed he had saved himself just barely as the attention refocused to answering his question. The young girl seemed interested to hear the answer as well, given that she was learning to be a shinobi herself. Ayumu nodded as Kahako answered him, explaining the limitations of medical jutsu. Overall, medical jutsu were miraculous and useful, but like anything too much could be harmful. Ayumu made a mental note of that as it sounded like something extremely important to remember.

The girl asked a question about when she might be able to walk on her leg again. Kahako wasn't able to give a definitive answer without an x-ray, but she tasked Ayumu with applying a pain numbing jutsu. He approached as she motioned for him and observed her handseals, committing them to memory. It wasn't extremely complicated, being one of the lower ranked medical ninjutsu, so even he could probably manage it. Nodding, Ayumu mimicked the handseals and held his hand up to his face for a moment as he channeled chakra to it. It had a feeling not entirely dissimilar to the only medical jutsu he was familiar with. Just to be entirely certain that he hadn't gotten something horribly wrong, he briefly touched his hand to his arm where a bruise was still aching slightly. In the brief moment of contact, the ache dulled signifying that the jutsu seemed to be working. Feeling slightly more confident, Ayumu prepared to use it on the girl's ankle.

"Okay, I'm going to apply the jutsu now. Let me know when the pain starts to go away, alright?" he said, giving the girl a smile before hovering his hand over her ankle. When it had taken effect, Ayumu would cease the chakra flow to the jutsu to stop it short of using too much.

"How's that?" he asked, hopeful that he had done it correctly.

After the green light of Ayumu’s healing jutsu dimished, the little girl’s face brightened. “Thank you, Ayumu-kun!” She said with a wide smile while trying to stand. Her father moved quickly to stop her getting up. “Careful, Chi-chan. It might not hurt anymore, but it could still be broken. You’ll make it worse.”

With a smile and bow, Kahako and Ayumu quickly departed. When they were out of earshot, Kahako turned, a wide smile on her face. “Okay, mister,” she hounded, poking him in the chest. “Spill it, how did you transform without both myself and and jounin noticing?”

Honestly, she was very proud of Ayumu. One of the hardest things to accomplish as a doctor wasn’t only the aspect of healing, it was one’s bedside manner. While some tried to take to humor, as she thought he would, he remained surprisingly professional. While humor was good in many situations, there was always that thin line between ‘funny’ and ‘insulting.’

Ayumu breathed a sigh of relief as the jutsu seemed to have worked. Of course, Kahako's caution to the girl to be careful regardless of the numbed pain was important. Ayumu felt as though he should have thought to caution her himself, but that was after all why he was learning. They parted ways with the patient and once they had gotten far enough away, Kahako wheeled around and confronted him on the spot. He had not thought about how his actions would cause her to question him. Of course, he had never been able to perform one-handed seals before, so something like that would draw suspicion.

Ayumu rubbed the back of his neck and chuckled sheepishly. The jig was up, essentially. Holding up one hand, he formed the seal for the simple transformation jutsu and before her eyes he would quickly transform into the Jounin from before. A moment later he would shift back to his true form. "It's a... new trick I've picked up," he said before allowing his shoulders to droop as he heaved a sigh. "Actually, it's a bit more complicated than that," he admitted. He needed to tell her. He knew he needed to. Even the spirit had told him repeatedly he needed to tell her. This was not the place nor the time, however.

"I'll explain later, okay? Let's keep going for now," he insisted. The explanation would have to wait until they were in the privacy of their home. This was not something to look forward to for either of them.

What was intended to be just a simple playful prod, actually turned out to be a little more serious than she originally imagined. “Oh… okay…” she said, now unsure what to expect as an explanation for how he was suddenly able to do one handed seals.

Turning to her tablet, Ayumu would notice that some of the names originally on there were gone. Some of the other doctors on their shift having taken care of them. It would continue as so for the rest of the day.
