Ayumu had been a shinobi for many years before he was named the Raikage. He had started out as they all did: a student in the academy. Naturally, he graduated to become a Genin and actually spent his formative years in the Main Branch until he achieved the rank of Jounin. It was when he was on the cusp of adulthood that he entered the trainee program for ANBU. He joined the elite force for a number of reasons, but none of them involved a bid at leadership. Yet he had been rocketed towards that Sennin position faster than anybody could ever have predicted. Desperate times called for desperate measures. He had been Sennin for a few years before he had been forced to step down for medical reasons, yet duty called him once more soon after to become the Sennin of the Main. Ayumu had the experience of two branches under his belt. He had led them, but he also knew what it was to be among the rank and file of both. Yet there was one path his life had never led him to walk. The medical branch.
Junko had done an excellent job in making sure that Ayumu seldom had to worry about the Medical branch, but there were inevitably decisions he still had to make from time to time as Raikage. Decisions he wondered if he was fully qualified to make as one who had never walked the halls of the Aesculapium as anything but a patient or visitor. His predecessor had thought it wise to try to learn from the medical branch, and Ayumu had come to that same conclusion. For that reason, he found himself outside of Kahako's office that day. He had spoken to her already to get permission, today he was here to learn. They were to assess the new patients coming in. Rather, Kahako would do most of the work while Ayumu shadowed her and assisted where he could.
Taking a breath, Ayumu felt a bit nervous despite knowing he was going to see his fiance. It felt like his first day as a trainee in ANBU all those years ago. Would he actually be able to learn anything here, or was he never cut out to have anything to do with this branch? Only time would tell. He knocked at the door, waiting for Kahako's permission to enter and then stepped inside. Seeing Kahako calmed his nerves slightly. At least he had somebody he was more than comfortable with to learn from. He smiled for a moment and then stood at attention.
"Trainee Ayumu, reporting for duty!" he said sternly, giving a quick salute. "Please take care of me, Sensei," he added with a quick cheeky wink as his arm dropped back to his side. In his mind, he could hear the groan of the new passenger within. Almost always present, the spirit was subject to more of Ayumu's jokes than anybody. Ayumu smirked slightly. He took more joy out of annoying the spirit than he probably should have.
"If you two start playing doctor, I'm out."
